And our God is really concerned about what his people are communicating about him. 00:01:57.599 --> 00:02:05.200 Israel wasn't just breaking the rules, they were misrepresenting the God whose name We're picking up the story right there, same scene, same exact channel. 00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:11.199 Chapter 2, verse 3 is where I'll start, just to pick up a few details. 00:05:11.360 --> 00:05:20.959 It says, And he, meaning God, said to me, Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, two nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:25.360 They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. 00:05:26.079 --> 00:05:33.759 Just a quick little note the title Son of Man is the most common title used for Ezekiel in this particular book. 00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:39.040 The significance of that title is that it connotates humility. 00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:43.040 Ezekiel does not see himself as a cut above the rest of the people. 00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:46.800 He sees himself as a son of man, or son of Adam, you could translate it. 00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:49.600 He's not in the upper class looking down at the lower class. 00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:56.399 That's what son of man means. 00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:03.360 Drop down with me to verse eight, as God continues by saying this, but you, son of man, hear what I say to there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe. 00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:39.680 So there's this vision, there's this hand, and then there's this book, this scroll, and there's stuff written on it, and the question is is it a happy, joyful message written on here, or is it a sad and bitter message written on here? 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:42.000 It's the sad and bitter message, 00:07:08.240 So I opened my mouth and he gave me this scroll to eat. 00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:14.000 And he said to me, Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll I give you and fill your stomach with the idea of God's word and eating and then speaking what you've eaten. 00:07:40.240 --> 00:07:41.040 What does that mean? 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:42.560 One commentator was helpful to me. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:48.079 He said, quote, the whole experience indicated that he was to absorb the word of God totally. 00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:54.560 He did not just taste it, but it was to fill his stomach so that he had thoroughly digested it. 00:07:54.639 --> 00:07:58.879 It was to become part of him, nourishing, energizing, and empowering him. 00:07:59.600 --> 00:08:03.360 Friends, this is what the word of God is designed to do. 00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:06.319 The word of God is designed for you to eat this book. 00:08:06.480 --> 00:08:10.639 May I ask you, do you spend time eating this book? wants us to eat this book. 00:08:27.360 --> 00:08:29.360 So that's what Ezekiel does. 00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:32.559 God says, eat it, though you might not like the taste of it. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:35.120 Kind of like when I was a parent and the kids were a lot smaller. 00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:37.840 We say, kids, I want you to eat this and keep it down. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:39.519 Okay, that's what God is saying. 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:40.799 That's what he does. 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:43.919 And when he does that, look what happens. 00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:49.200 Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey. 00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:54.480 It's sweet as honey, even though this scroll contains a message of judgment. 00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:59.440 Because the sweetness isn't necessarily in the content of the message. 00:08:59.600 --> 00:09:02.879 The sweetness is because God has spoken. 00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:09.120 And the word of God can be sweet, even if what God has to say sometimes is hard. 00:09:09.759 --> 00:09:13.759 But secondly, I want you to know that this thing right here is like a little riddle. 00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:20.879 Somehow, what God has purposed to do in judgment to his covenant people because of their faithlessness is so bad it's like a funeral. 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:22.159 It's so sad it's like a funeral. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:22.720 It's bitter. 00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:29.279 Somehow, for anyone willing to take it in and eat it, there's a honey promise at the end. 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:32.799 And this is a picture, a riddle, really, of the whole book of Ezekiel. 00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:42.639 That there's this there's this bitter judgment at the beginning of the scroll of Ezekiel, but by the time you get to the end, from chapter 34 on, there's like honey at the end of this book. 00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:53.440 So Ezekiel is given this scroll, he eats it, it's sweet, and then he's given this as a message to give to the people, and I wonder what kind of response the people are going to have. 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:54.960 We'll take a look at verse 7. 00:09:55.360 --> 00:10:02.559 God says, But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me. 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:08.080 Because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. 00:10:08.320 --> 00:10:15.679 Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads, like emory, harder than flint have I made your forehead. 00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:20.559 Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. 00:10:20.799 --> 00:10:21.679 Pause there for a second. 00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:24.799 So as a recap, Ezekiel is given God's word. 00:10:25.039 --> 00:10:28.879 Ezekiel is supposed to eat it and to receive it and then give it out to the people. 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:31.519 And Ezekiel here is God's representative. 00:10:31.679 --> 00:10:34.799 His first responsibility is not to make the message more palatable. 00:10:34.960 --> 00:10:38.879 Rather, his responsibility is to faithfully deliver what he has been given. 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:45.679 In verse 9, when it says, fear them not, what that means there is that they're going to be intimidating when you give them this message. 00:10:45.840 --> 00:10:50.559 When he says, Don't be dismayed at their looks, it doesn't mean that they look weird or look funny. 00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:53.279 It means don't be dismayed at the way they look back 00:13:59.679 --> 00:14:03.120 Just like you and me, Ezekiel is now given everything he needs to have a ministry. 00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:06.879 He's given the Spirit of God, he's given the word of God, and the scripture is with him. 00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:08.480 Now look at verse 16. 00:14:08.960 --> 00:14:12.639 It says, And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me. 00:14:12.879 --> 00:14:16.559 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. 00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:22.159 Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:27.279 So God says, Ezekiel, I want you to play a role, and the role I want you to play is the role of a watchman. 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:29.840 Now, a watchman had a very important job. 00:14:29.919 --> 00:14:34.000 It was their job to warn the people of the city of impending war or danger. 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:36.159 Everything depended on the watchman. 00:14:36.320 --> 00:14:40.000 If that person messed up, your city would be attacked and sieged without warning. 00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:43.519 Big consequences would come if you don't do your job as the watchman. 00:14:43.679 --> 00:14:45.120 This is like a matter of life and death. 00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:48.240 You had to be all alert as the watchman. 00:14:48.399 --> 00:14:53.440 This was like an early warning system, and you doing your job could save lives. 00:14:53.679 --> 00:14:56.399 That's what our main graphic is actually communicating. 00:14:56.480 --> 00:15:02.960 Uh, if you've seen this graphic, Ezekiel is there as a watchman, ready to give the warning that God is telling him to give. 00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:07.279 The role of a watchman will be a crucial image throughout the entire series. 00:15:07.360 --> 00:15:08.639 It's a dominant theme. 00:15:08.879 --> 00:15:15.840 So Ezekiel is gonna be a watchman, and then God here gives him a few scenarios about how this is gonna play itself out. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.679 Like, here, if you're a watchman, it's gonna happen like this, not this. 00:15:19.840 --> 00:15:21.600 Let's take a look at verse 18. 00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:36.879 God says, If I say to the wicked, you shall surely die, and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I'll require at your hand. 00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:39.840 You catch that? 00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:42.799 So God says, You're the watchman. 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:46.320 If somebody dies on your watch, guess whose fault it is? 00:15:46.799 --> 00:15:48.480 It's your fault, Ezekiel. 00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:55.679 Now they still die for their own wickedness, but God says, I will hold you at fault for failing to warn them. 00:15:56.320 --> 00:15:57.919 And the flip side of that is also true. 00:15:58.080 --> 00:15:59.360 So look at verse 19. 00:15:59.679 --> 00:16:08.799 But if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have delivered your own soul. 00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:14.159 So here's the reverse if somebody dies, but you warn them, that's not your fault. 00:16:14.399 --> 00:16:17.600 You will not be held responsible, even though they didn't listen to you. 00:16:36.559 He simply holds Ezekiel responsible for delivering God's message to the people. 00:16:36.720 --> 00:16:40.720 Ezekiel's responsibility is like your responsibility, it's faithfulness. that the people of God had to repent of their sin. 00:16:59.360 --> 00:17:03.440 Those who reject the message must suffer the consequences of that sin, death, and judgment. 00:17:03.600 --> 00:17:05.920 And we have a very similar message. 00:17:06.079 --> 00:17:13.519 Only in our generation, because of our place in redemptive history, we also share the good news of the gospel after the warning. 00:17:13.759 --> 00:17:23.039 We share that there's also a way of escape that's possible through the work of Christ and forgiveness that you can enjoy if you come to Him by faith and faith
