Kate Beck [00:00:27]:
Let's get started with today's episode. Welcome to Timeless Vitality. My name is Kate Beck, and I'm your host today. Joining me is Amber Stitt for co-host.
Amber Stitt [00:00:38]:
So happy to be here.
Kate Beck [00:00:39]:
And today we have the pleasure of Alice Tang, speaker, podcaster. Alice, welcome.
Alice Tang [00:00:46]:
Hi, everyone. Hi, Amber and Kate. Happy to be here.
Kate Beck [00:00:49]:
We're happy to have you. So, Alice, please share a little bit about yourself and what inspired Women's Million Dollar Conversations.
Alice Tang [00:00:58]:
Okay, so I'll start with when I was born in 1960's. Well, it takes three years to finish this story. No. I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I was in an all girls high school and in the school, I'm not supposed to be in the school, but I was. Everybody is better, faster in running, and doing a lot of good projects. They're better in English than me. So why I was there is because my mom had a relationship with the principal and said, "This is all girl school. You should be in there, because then your path in the future is paced really, really, really well."
Alice Tang [00:01:36]:
So being always in the bottom one third of the class, I feel like I'm wallflower. I'm not as outspoken as today. I don't have even one 10th or 100th of my confidence today. Being a wallflower, I know wallflower needs to be loved. So that's why I always want to help women who's standing in a room, who feel they are lost at a networking event, at a company event, at just a client visit, somebody who's standing at the wall, not knowing what to do. I love to help them. So what's my purpose is to empowering women to be more confident about themselves by loving themselves first.
Amber Stitt [00:02:13]:
It's beautiful.
Kate Beck [00:02:14]:
It's true. And I have been working and volunteering with Alice for over a decade, and she walks her walk. That's why she's here today, to empower us and to empower our listeners. So, Alice, what inspired Women's Million Dollar Conversations?
Alice Tang [00:02:31]:
If I tell you I get bored very easily, would you believe?
Kate Beck [00:02:35]:
Yes.
Amber Stitt [00:02:35]:
I don't know you. Me, too!
Alice Tang [00:02:39]:
Yeah. So in the pandemic, we all work from home. I got bored really easily because, gosh, I don't need to drive. Everything can be finished so soon because you don't need to drive, see client, nobody want to see me. So I happened to Google. I said, "What am I going to Google and learn about today?" And I google: "million dollar household in United States".
Alice Tang [00:03:00]:
Now I'm an immigrant. America is a rich country, probably the top one wealthiest country in the world when I immigrated 30 years ago. So I'm expecting a number like 30%, 50%. Of course, I'm not Pollyanna, right? Everybody is million dollar. No, no, that's not true. Guess what I found. 10%, including your home equity. My heart goes to the single woman who might not, may or may not, be a single mom, the newly divorced woman, the widowed woman.
Alice Tang [00:03:30]:
Jeez. We are in the financial services industry. 10% is humiliating to me for the wealthiest country in the world. So I thought, I need to change this. Between one thing and the other, I was talking to my marketing company for my professional speaking. And Kate, you know, Tiffany. Tiffany says, "Put something together. Don't just complain."
Alice Tang [00:03:52]:
I said, "Well, I'm not complaining. I'm going to do something about it." And she said, "Why not have a project of women's million dollar conversation? You're interviewing women who made a million dollars, earned a million dollars, or have saved a million dollars." Everyone have a different trajectory and number of years that they get to that first goal. And we all know that in the financial industry and banking, getting to your first is the most difficult one. It might take you five years, 15 years. Hopefully it's not 50 years, but from 1 million to 2 million, it's not even half the work. Because your mind is stronger, you know you can do it.
Alice Tang [00:04:30]:
So that's to that extent, to answer a long answer to a short question.
Kate Beck [00:04:35]:
I love it. And it brings awareness, too. Awareness to that. It's actually. It is possible. And if it feels like it's impossible, finding professionals and surrounding yourself with people to say, "Hey, how do I make the next best choice?"
Alice Tang [00:04:51]:
That's right. I'd like to add to what Kate said. First, change your mind, change your vision, change your lens. So what you see is different. So a lot of the work that Amber, Kate, and Alice do is to help people to see what's possible once they believe it's like a switch. "I can. I really can!" So that's why the Million Dollar Conversation provides a lot of role models.
Alice Tang [00:05:16]:
So, for example, Kate, if you're on our show, or podcast, somebody can relate to you really well, but they can't relate to me. Then we have Amber coming on board. Somebody can relate to Amber can never relate to Kate, can never relate to Alice, can never relate to Nina, or Laura. So if we have enough role models that people can see, "Hmm, I look like her. If she can do it, immigrant, broken English, she can still do it. Why not me?" That's the message.
Kate Beck [00:05:43]:
I love it. Why not me? Why not all of us? And bring a friend, right?
Alice Tang [00:05:48]:
Yes, exactly.
Kate Beck [00:05:49]:
Why not me? And bring three friends. Okay, three new members to the million dollar club.
Amber Stitt [00:05:56]:
So Kate, this sounds a lot like how we just form our tribes and we try to figure out grouping together, who's going to live with us, having financial freedom and living long lives together. So Alice, do you think that there's an age that this can happen? Or is it any age that we can make this happen for ourselves?
Alice Tang [00:06:12]:
I like to say that it takes a lot of hard work. Unless you're born with a million dollars, like a silver spoon, or diamond spoon in your mouth, right? It takes some time. That's why one of the questions I ask is how long does it take for you to get to your million? So I have people who said 3 years. I have people who said 30 years. So when I have enough data called the large data, right? I know that the average is 12.3 years up to now. So I may be interviewing good people, but I will keep interviewing so we can have some real average because the pool need to be big enough so that the average is meaningful. So, it can be done.
Amber Stitt [00:06:51]:
We got to get the mind right so we have a plus ten, plus twelve years. Got to start now.
Alice Tang [00:06:55]:
And grow out with people who are bigger than you. Always. So when you look at somebody, "Well, they are too shiny. I cannot approach them." Guess what? Approach them because they are successful. Women specifically, and men too. They really want to give. They want to give, but you need to give them a reason to give. If you approach them and say, "I need 3 hours every month from you, coach me."
Alice Tang [00:07:19]:
Time out. None of us here have the time. The tip is, "Can I have 15 minutes and get some advice?" That's micro mentoring. Everybody has 15 minutes. I scroll my phone for 15 minutes, commit the same, right? Why not help another man, or woman, or whoever to be successful using my phone scrolling time. So easy. Yes. Just ask.
Alice Tang [00:07:45]:
Approach and ask and be reasonable. Make it easy for them to say, "Yes." Sales 101.
Kate Beck [00:07:52]:
And show up. And in addition to asking, do what they say. If they give you the 15 minutes, then find a way to incorporate that into your life because that's where the good stuff grows. So I'm curious, Alice, was there a challenge that you didn't anticipate that you overcame either in the creation of Million Dollar Conversations, or during it. Is there something that you didn't anticipate that bubbled up for you, or for the community?
Alice Tang [00:08:18]:
Professional speaking is really the challenge for me. I remember going into grad school here, just wanted to migrate into our community because I knew nobody. And that master program required all of us to speak in front of the room, every class. I was not equipped with that speaking ability, so I had really busy PowerPoint, as you both do PowerPoints. I'm reading off my PowerPoint...
Amber Stitt [00:08:45]:
We've all done it.
Alice Tang [00:08:49]:
My heart was pounding like it's jumping out of my body and want to find a place to land. So that's no fun. So I made the decision to just master it, said, "I'm not going to be afraid of it. Bring it on." So I still speak with an accent, and these days I will start a professional presentation as a paid speaker. Say, you know, I got my passport. USA asked me to be a citizen, but they didn't give me the accent in the envelope of the passport. So what you need to do is, "If you don't understand, no, that is not your problem, it's mine.
Alice Tang [00:09:24]:
All you need to do is raise your hand and ask me to restate or say it from a different way so that you can understand it. Because sometimes the words I cannot pronounce perfectly, and you need to help me."
Kate Beck [00:09:34]:
So, Alice, tell us, professional speaking and podcasting, that's what you do in your spare time. How do you generate your income?
Alice Tang [00:09:41]:
Oh, very good question. In the financial service industry, of course, we do have clients. And if you're in a fee based money management advisor situation, of course we do more than that. Over the years, you have accumulated great clients who have committed and being loyal to you and you being loyal to them. So having a team of nine helps, because then my love is really to ring make. I love to engage people. I love people. That's why I teach, "Your network is your net worth," as a professional speaking topic.
Alice Tang [00:10:12]:
But the rest, the admin, actually, I'm not good. My front desk the other day, I was just looking over her desk and she said, "Alice, you want to take over the front desk?" I said, "No, I'll be fired the next day because I can't do what you do. I don't want to be fired." So my long answer to money making is in my financial services. And because we built a system and a model for the firm that released Alice and our lead partners, to be able to go into the community and make contact and do the high level work. Everybody can do.
Amber Stitt [00:10:50]:
Alice, do you find that these million dollar folks, these guests, is there a common denominator of them having this team and scaling to make it happen that stood out to you at all?
Alice Tang [00:11:00]:
Yes, many of them do actually. Either they are very high level executives at the company, or they own the company. So locally we have, for example, Sadie Lincoln, who owns barre3, who has over 170 franchises all over the world. Very good friend of mine. And she definitely knows how to scale it. Yes. So, it's fun to get to people that I have no idea that I would get to because all I needed to do is to ask for who else do you know who wants to help another woman? Not necessarily who else is another millionaire prospect that I have.
Alice Tang [00:11:35]:
So, the friendship is built and some of them become clients. So I mean, that's surprising. By the way, my goal is to help women to get to the million dollar net worth.
Amber Stitt [00:11:46]:
It's communication.
Alice Tang [00:11:47]:
That's right.
Amber Stitt [00:11:48]:
Yeah.
Alice Tang [00:11:48]:
That's right. I thought there is one question that you guys planned to ask. So I'm going to ask myself, "What makes someone timeless?" To me, it's really always believe in yourself. Feeling that you are enough because none of the financial confidence or anything, they are the second layer. The first layer is if you don't have self love and you don't feel enough, it doesn't matter. Look at the stock market. It's dropped since the first of the month, so we have less money, all of us here. Does it make us feel less value? No.
Alice Tang [00:12:18]:
What if my husband pack and go, does it make me feel less value? Maybe for a little bit, for a little while. But I know I have value. It's just the wrong match. But he's staying. Celebrating 33 years. Sorry.
Amber Stitt [00:12:36]:
Congratulations.
Kate Beck [00:12:39]:
I love it. Well, thank you. Thank you so much, Alice, for sharing your timeless journey with us and for empowering women to know that they too can join and have a seat at the million dollar table. And it may not be today with data that we can see but in twelve years it is possible. Starting today, start asking questions and have the courage in yourself and the courage to ask for that 15 minute meeting with someone who inspires you to shine bright. Thank you, Alice.
Alice Tang [00:13:09]:
That's right. Everybody knows that the top is flat. You don't need to kick somebody off the ladder to get there. There's a lot of space. So for those of us who have arrived, or somewhat arrived, let's send back the elevator.
Amber Stitt [00:13:22]:
Love that. So all these little pearls of wisdom. Pearls. She's got the pearls, Alice.
Kate Beck [00:13:28]:
I know. I love it.
Amber Stitt [00:13:30]:
How do people find you to get to know you and get to know your amazing network?
Alice Tang [00:13:34]:
