Demystifying the Role of School Counsellors: Talking with Stewart McAllen

Dr. Suzanne Simpson Episode 30

This episode is for parents who are trying to get mental health support for their children at school. Stewart McAllen, a seasoned B.C. school counsellor, describes the reality of his work. While many parents assume counsellors can provide talk therapy at school, the truth is there are significant limitations simply due to our system. Stew describes his task list of course planning and code entries, helping with university applications, and the ratio of counsellor to students. The goal of this episode is to give a realistic understanding of what school counsellors can and cannot do so that parents have a better understanding of what is accessible.
