Which Upcoming Movies and TV Shows Are We Most Excited For?

From Avengers: Doomsday and Clayface to Ted Lasso Season 4, Lanterns, and Jumanji: Open World, Aaron and Brash react to some of the biggest trailers of the year and put them through the ultimate test:

Did the trailers actually make us more excited to watch them?

Before watching a single trailer, the hosts rank each project based purely on anticipation. Then, after every reaction and discussion, they reshuffle their lists to see which trailers succeeded—and which may have hurt their hype instead.

In This Episode

  •  Why Avengers: Doomsday has both hosts excited—and worried.
  •  Has Marvel become too reliant on ensemble films?
  •  Why Robert Pattinson's Batman may be the definitive live-action Dark Knight.
  •  How James Gunn's DC Universe is rebuilding excitement around DC films.
  •  The promise of Clayface as a genuine horror movie.
  •  Why Lanterns could finally redeem Green Lantern in live action.
  •  Whether Ted Lasso Season 4 should exist after such a satisfying ending.
  •  The challenge of introducing Richmond's new women's team while keeping the heart of the original series intact.
  •  Why women's sport is creating the perfect backdrop for Ted Lasso's return.
  •  Can Jumanji evolve enough to justify another sequel?
  •  The biggest surprises after watching every trailer.
  •  Final hype rankings after all five reactions.

Key Takeaways

  •  Great trailers don't just reveal footage—they increase anticipation.
  •  Franchise fatigue is real, but strong creative vision can overcome it.
  •  DC's willingness to explore different genres may become its biggest strength.
  •  Ted Lasso's success will depend less on Ted himself and more on making audiences care about an entirely new team.
  •  Sometimes the most anticipated project isn't the one with the biggest budget—it's the one with the clearest creative direction.

Final Rankings

By the end of the episode, Aaron and Brash revisit every trailer and reveal how their opinions changed after watching them. Some projects climb the rankings, while others fall once the footage is on screen.

Cold Open Doom Vs X-Men

SPEAKER_03

Yep, James Marston's alive. It's good to see him blasting his optic blast in his blue and yellow uniform, as a lot of fans have wanted him to be in. Yeah. I have a strong feeling that the X-Men are purely in this movie to act as a way for us as an audience to see how powerful Doom is. Or they will be destroyed very early in the movie for us to get a sense of stakes. Because it's a cheap way for them to do it. We already have connection with these characters. We already have a nostalgia with these characters. So if we see them get destroyed so easily, especially after Cyclops uses his amazing blast, and we know how powerful Patrick Stewart's Xavier and Magneto are, if we see them get destroyed straight up, then obviously it's going to put a little bit of fear into the audience members to say how these Avengers characters are going to beat our beloved X-Men.

Welcome And Trailer Line-Up

SPEAKER_03

Welcome everybody to the Phantom Portals podcast. My name is Aaron, a teacher and a film fan, and today we're reacting to trailers and I'm doing it with Brash. How are you going, Brash? Hello. I am good. I am very good. Today we are going to look at five of the latest trailers for movies that are releasing later this year or early next year. Some of them are for TV series as well, and we are going to rate them. Are you ready? Well, I am ready.

Avengers Doomsday Trailer Deep Dive

SPEAKER_03

So a little bit of information about the Avengers Doomsday trailer. This is going to release on the 18th of December. It is very highly anticipated, obviously, by lots of people, directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. It is starring Robert Downey Jr., Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth. We could do a whole episode on the cast of this movie. Lots of people. Yeah. Trailer was released at San Diego Comic Con, and already through social media, people have started to see the amount of returning cast members, especially from the X-Men universe. Alright, so let's get this started. Yeah, already we're seeing Xavier's school of gifted youngsters. Something's good.

SPEAKER_02

Something we may not be able to.

SPEAKER_07

That's that's down eight.

SPEAKER_03

Love the guy. So much to unpack. Don't know where to start. If you've watched that trailer and you see scene in Infinity Vision, the reason they've done that is obviously because this is releasing on the same day as Dune 3, and Dune 3 has booked out all the IMAX screens. So Infinity Vision is basically their version to label every other big screen that they can get a hold of, they're going to play this movie on. So I think even despite that, this will make a billion dollars just for the hype. But a couple of things stand out to me straight off, Brash. And I'll start I'll say one of the things that stood out to me, and then feel free to jump in with one of yours. But obviously, we're seeing some of the old X-Men in here from the Fox universe. Yep. James Marston's alive. Yep, James Marsden's alive. We already have connection with these characters, we already have a nostalgia with these characters. So if we see them get destroyed so easily, especially after Cyclops uses his amazing blast, and we know how powerful Patrick, Stewart, Xavier, and Magneto are, if we see them get destroyed straight up, then obviously it's going to put a little bit of fear into the audience members to say how are these Avengers characters going to beat our beloved X-Men? Straight up. Obviously, we saw Gambit, Chatting Tatum's Gambit as well.

SPEAKER_05

I'd love to go back and have a look at where they're fighting. Because where they're fighting, it kind of reminded me of Doctor Strange's Imporum.

SPEAKER_03

Sanctum Centorum.

SPEAKER_05

Sanctum Stone, Sanctum Centaurum.

SPEAKER_03

It it could also have been Doom's Castle, honestly. Because there's lots of pillars and rocks and stone around as well. There looks like there is sculptures in the background as well, but that they're fighting around. I also was surprised to see how small the thing was. Like Mbaku from Wakonda is taller than him. I think that's crazy. He looks like a cute little rock man, which is Yeah. Yeah. Straight up you also saw like Downey's accent as Doctor Doom. Do you think, Brash, that they're going to reveal his face at all in this movie? Possibly not.

SPEAKER_05

But the fact of but then why ruin the fact that it is Robert Dane Jr.

SPEAKER_03

I think that was honestly just to generate hype for that out whore H Comic-Con. But you know what would have been awesome is if they saved that reveal until this trailer or until people saw it in the movie. Well, because they'd be seeing that voice, they'd be seeing the man in the mask and they'd be wondering who that And yeah, and even leave even leave any sort of credit out until the very end.

SPEAKER_05

But like at no point have Bob Dani Jr. That he died in Endgame. Endgame. Yeah. And that and then just leave it like that and then have it revealed later. But like it makes me if he can stop Thor with his two fingers, yeah. It kind of I I'm kind of trying to think of now which Doom could do that.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I know that this Doom is probably going to be associated with like the witchcraft element that his character is also influenced.

SPEAKER_05

Well, yeah, to to have to be able to stop exactly it'd have to have some sort of magic.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So I I've heard online as well, with the talking about whether RDJ is going to release reveal his face in this movie or not. Some people feel like he's going to do like a bait and switch, like Thor's going to employ Doom for a higher level threat, for example, of an incursion, and then he's going to act as an ally because he looks like Tony Stark, and then obviously he's going to reveal that his intentions aren't as pure as what they thought. So I don't

Loki, Steve Rogers, Multiverse Theories

SPEAKER_03

think it's going to be as complex as that. I think this movie is purely going to set up Doctor Doom as a villain. One thing we also saw as well is we saw Loki, and I I haven't watched Loki season two, but I know that he was very much entwined with the multiverses and holding them together. And he was not holding those branches together in this trailer. He was what looked like in a house with some very familiar curtains, it looked like Peggy Carter's house that Steve Rogers went back to at the end of Endgame where they were doing their dance.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So whether Loki knows that Steve Rogers going back, returning the Infinity Stones, created a branch off multiverse that then enabled Doom to rise to power, and that is why Steve Rogers gets involved in this conflict, because they have to have a really good reason for him to join the fight. Because his arc was tied up so well with Haley Atwell's Peggy Carter. I mean, the trailer that they saw was him nursing a newborn baby or a baby. Like, what reason would he have to jump into this role? But then also, people are speculating from looking at this trailer. If you notice the soundtrack when Steve Rogers is on screen with Chris Hemsworth's Thor, it's almost like suspicious in the way that the soundtrack is used, and the look on his face is almost villainous. And I've seen enough Chris Evans movies to know the looks on his face, and it was not sincere. I'll tell you that right now. Chris Evans is up to something here, and he did move his hand and summon Milnir, obviously. But we all know as well from the comic books that Captain Hydra can do that too, due to some use of manipulation. But yeah, people are speculating that he he's not a good guy.

SPEAKER_05

And that that's something I sort of picked up on how, like, because you saw a lot of the them fighting with each other. Yeah. So I'm because I know were there plans for a war world?

SPEAKER_03

Secret Wars comes after this. Yeah. It's directly after this. So that there's not going to be any Marvel movies released between this one and Secret Wars.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, so I reckon I reckon this is to set up Secret Wars. Doomsday set up Secret Wars. Oh yeah. And it's going to be Doom with a bunch of hero like heroes on his side against whoever's going to be leading the good guys on this side. And now we're going to be able to do that.

SPEAKER_03

I think it's going to be Pedro Pascal and Thor. Yeah. So Mr. Fantastic and Thor. Which, you know, looking at how Mr. Fantastic led the Fantastic Four, we don't have much of a chance. I felt like Sue Storm was a better leader for the Fantastic Four thanks.

SPEAKER_05

Oh yeah, sure, she she's the heart of the Fantastic Four.

SPEAKER_03

So Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Easily.

SPEAKER_03

Mr.

SPEAKER_01

Fantastic's just a brain.

SPEAKER_05

Whereas Suzan. But I think I think, yeah, I think this is just gonna be one big setup for Doomsday is just gonna be the reveal of Doom. He's gonna probably bring kill some people. But I I reckon I reckon it's gonna be similar to like Apocalypse. So he's gonna have a group of people with him that he's gonna use to like either join him or die. Pretty much is gonna be a thing. As much as I hope he's not a bad guy, uh like Gambit. He might have gone in, but they they they show you how he escaped.

SPEAKER_03

Well, yeah, in the post-credit scene of uh Deadpool and Wolverine when he was uh trapped in the world, the Forgotten World. At the end of that, there was a portal that opened and he looked at and and he sort of smiled. So how he comes through, nobody knows, but I feel like he's just going to be with they're not gonna explain it. I think he's just gonna be with the X-Men. And he may be one of the survivors, but I still think the X-Men are going to be eliminated, possibly by Doom. But it interests me to see why the Avengers are fighting some of the X-Men.

SPEAKER_05

Well, yeah, see that that's why that's what I think. I reckon I reckon Doom goes to the universe that Patrick Stewart, like their original X-Men, their universe, first, because he knows how powerful they are, like you're a mega level mines. And I think some of them end up being recruited to Doom site, Mystique being one. And Gambit, not always a good guy. He knows the odds. Very true. He plays the odds. He was a bad boy, he wasn't didn't fall in line with the X-Men. And he'd help him out sometimes, but then sometimes he'd be against him because he got paid, because he get paid to do like a job. So you go do a job and the X-Men trying to stop him, and he has fight the X-Men on it. But usually he always ends up like sort of being a semi-good guy. But I reckon in this, he might be like, he might see Cyclops get absolutely and I hope they don't do it. Well, I hope they showcase how strong he is first. But I I have a bad I've I have a bad feeling that they're gonna oh Cyclops again, and I'm gonna hate it.

SPEAKER_01

Redeemed him.

SPEAKER_05

Hundred percent. That was such so like he was so cool, and he's still so cool at that.

SPEAKER_03

Um and honestly, they really have to get rid of these characters because it's well known that they're going to reboot the universe shortly after this Avengers series. So they're gonna have a new Cyclops, they're gonna have a new Xavier, and they don't want people lingering on the past. So I really feel like this time these X-Men are used as a plot device, unfortunately. But I think it's gonna be Doom is going to be pruning the extra universes as he does so in the comic books. Loki notices that and then goes around to try and recruit people.

SPEAKER_05

So they got Doom and then Loki, and they're both flying for, and maybe Doom is trying to get Loki's power. Because if Doom had Loki's power, he could create whatever universe he wanted to.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Well, Secret Wars ties all the universes together and then at the end spits out one superior universe where all of these characters will coexist in. I think these universes will be pruned off, and I think that Doom is going to go to the X-Men's universe as well and say that, hey, somebody's pruning these universes, and the people that are doing it, these X these Avengers that are coming through, like you'll see some strangers that are coming to investigate. So I think he's going to be playing a little bit of a a conniving sort of character, Robert Downey Jr., because in an interview as well, Downey said that he is used to being on these Marvel sets and being fully involved with everybody and and talking amongst the heroes and being really sort of in a close-knit sort of group. But he said this experience was very different for him, and he said almost isolating, but not to the point where he didn't enjoy it. But it was isolating in the way that he is the villain, he is the bad guy. Everybody looks at him in a different light now. Yeah. And I think that everybody will be pleasantly surprised at how he plays it. Before I've heard you say as well that you didn't like or you don't like Robert Danny Jr. being cast as Doctor Doom. What are your thoughts after hearing his accent, seeing him in costume?

SPEAKER_05

I mean, right, look, there's nothing wrong with Robert Danny Jr. playing Doom. It's just that we've known him for as I know for so long, it's gonna be hard to separate the two. Yeah. For me, uh for me at least, like I'm always gonna be like, it feels like they're reusing a staple to really money because of how popular Robert Danger Gear's design is.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, well let's let's finish this one off with a prediction.

Box Office Bets And Death Picks

SPEAKER_03

And the prediction is this movie is obviously has has a huge budget.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's probably gonna have to make two billion dollars to profit. Do you think the movie is going to be a profitable entry to the MCU? Is it gonna make better money?

SPEAKER_05

I I wanna say yes. The only reason why I'm uh pausing a bit is I feel like day one, there's gonna be a big influx of people, H people going to see it. It's gonna make a block of money in the first day. It depends on how those first people view it. Because I don't know if if it's not good word of mouth. Word of mouth and online reviews, people just going on social media. Social media is gonna ruin everything. And if it is bad, then it's gonna get bombed and people are gonna be like, Oh, is it really that bad? I might wait for it to come out on digital or something.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And it might not quite like I still people will probably still end up going and watching it, but it might slow the amount of people going there.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_05

My other thing is I hope this movie is four hours long.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think it is.

SPEAKER_05

It would have to be the amount of people in there and the amount of story they must have to be trying to get through, the amount they've got they've got X-Men, they've got Fantastic Four, they've got Avengers, they got Doom. Like they've got a lot, they've got the Thunderbolts, they've got so many people, and I know that they're pushing like groups together and stuff like that. But realistically, if you if you like if we count how many groups are, so it's pretty much each group gets an hour to do what they need to do. It's gonna be it's gonna be tight. It's gonna be tight.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, second question. Which character you do you think will not make it through this movie? I'm going to predict that Patrick Stewart's Xavier, Ian McKellen's Magneto, James Marsden's Cyclops, Cummins's Nightcrawler, any of those X-Men, they're not making it. Nah. They're not making it to Secret Wars. Gambit may be the sole survivor because I fear the fan backlash if they put him in this movie and kill him off after waiting so long to see Chang Tatum as Gambit. Yeah. But I reckon the X-Men are gone.

SPEAKER_05

I I have a feeling that they might even kill off Thor.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. That would be a blow.

SPEAKER_03

Groundbreaking and a blow, yeah. Because he seems to be from this trailer the leader of the whole operation. He narrates two-thirds of the trailer.

SPEAKER_05

Yep. Which I think I think that's why he has so much such a prominent role in Doomsday.

SPEAKER_03

That and Infinity War.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. But like in Doomsday, that's why I think he's got such a prominent role in this Doomsday in the trailer and then in probably in the movie, is that he's probably gonna be the one. He's probably gonna want to do two cars.

SPEAKER_01

That's a good shout. That's a good shout. I mean wink. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So because I reckon I reckon they're gonna thin some of the original roster.

SPEAKER_03

Not to mention as well that in Deadpool and Wolverine, Deadpool saw a image of Thor crying. Was it in Ant-Man's Yeah. So whether that comes true or not, whether that's a prediction from Avengers Doomsday, I don't know, but you've just worried me, bro.

SPEAKER_05

Because I reckon really I reckon Ant Man might survive, purely for the fact that he's one of the newer Avengers that came along. I reckon uh because Thor in the trailer talked a lot about he has seen people who are much stronger than Thor. So I ac actually I'm gonna make another position. You know, he was saying how Doom is gonna go through and wipe out wipe out the X-Men. I reckon the Avengers go to fight Doom and all get wiped out except for Thor as well.

SPEAKER_03

Well, Thor was fighting Doom alone with Stormbreaker. Either that's the first time they've met and that's how he knows if the threaten goes to gather allies, or that's what I reckon, that's the climax.

SPEAKER_05

I reckon I reckon Thor goes back and gets Rogers.

SPEAKER_03

Well well, or Loki does that as well, because we saw Loki with his TVA badge. Because also, if you looked at that image closely, when the TVA badge is on the screen and that person that's holding it flips it over, that person's wearing a wedding ring, and Loki's not married, but Steve Rogers is. So I reckon that Loki has gone to get Steve Rogers and he hands him the TVA badge as a reason to say, hey, I'm the person who holds the universes together.

SPEAKER_05

I reckon Thor's the only person who survives and comes back and has to recruit the B team, which is the Thunderworld, and and recruit other people to fight Doom because I reckon they might go to fight Doom and the whole original Avengers team gets wiped out. And that's why when he comes back and he's crying in Airman's arms, because he just lost all of these friends.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And I reckon a lot of people are gonna die, and that's why he comes back and warns them, hey, we have never faced anything like we've always overcome everything that comes towards us, and we've beaten some pretty big bad people. This is something I've never seen before.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Like, so I I think this trailer does a really good job of increasing the stakes for us. I think there's lots of things that people can pull out from this trailer as well. It does the job that trailers are supposed to do, it hypes people up, it's already gotten so many views on on YouTube already, and I think it probably will make over two billion dollars. Will it defeat word of mouth? We'll have to

Ted Lasso Season Four Reboot Vibes

SPEAKER_03

wait and see. All right, Ted Lasso is being released for season four by Apple TV. It stars Jason Sedukis and is created by him as well. And we have some returning cast members for season four. It is almost like a reboot or a spin-off as he is now coaching the women's team. It is a little bit controversial this season four because obviously season three ended up really nicely in terms of Ted's story arc and where he was kind of going with his trajectory with his mental health. So I'm I'll be interested to see how this sort of uh opens up and how it explores more of Ted Lasso's character. I'm excited to see the returning characters of Brett Goldstein's Roy Kent, obviously, and then Hannah Waddingham's Rebecca as well. Those three together, and also obviously Juno Temple's two very yeah, very much uh fan favourites of the show. Those are pretty much the only four returning casts, and also Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard. Ted Lasso couldn't do anything with Coach Beard. But it'll be interesting to see how they incorporate these characters into a brand new season where they can take them, the different story arcs that. These characters can go on, and whether we'll see any returning cast members or cameo members as well. And how how are they gonna make us fall in love with a brand new soccer team, Rash?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, that's gonna be interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, welcome back. Good to see you.

SPEAKER_03

You do. I love those two.

SPEAKER_01

Not as catchy, but. Not as catchy, but food. Very good.

SPEAKER_03

So my initial thought obviously is we're we're looking at a women's team here. So I feel like Juno Temple's role as Keely will be expanded, and obviously Rebecca Waddingham's will as well. She's still the CEO of Richmond FC, but we're also seeing her in this new space where she's starting to get into a relationship. With the pilot. With the Yeah, with the pilot, which obviously was something that originated from season two and three. And I'll be interested to see how she navigates this business and then curating a new relationship as well. That will probably be her journey.

SPEAKER_05

Especially since like she had that uh went through the whole uh thing of knocking out of children. Yeah. And now and the pilot has a daughter.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Yeah, okay. So she's also going to be looking at both experiencing those new adventures of of motherhood as well, whilst also being a businesswoman, and a probably a role model for this young, young girl as well. So modeling what it is to be, you know, a woman in power.

SPEAKER_05

And I I'll I'll sh I'll I'll assume like something about like uh like you may not always think you're a great parent or a great mother, but as long as you're doing your best, I can all I can I'll show and I can be Keely the ones who sort of because Keely is has been around Chloe. But I think her experience in the original series of uh helping out with I wanna say Zoe. Wanna say Zoe? Roy's niece. She will help Rebecca navigate now having to possibly also have a yeah, so they might have small child around.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, some conversations surrounding that. I feel like Keely's also going to have a central theme of navigating the relationship with Roy Kent. Because you saw you saw in the trailer as well they kind of were together, but then you see them parting in the hallway with Roy turning around and obviously doing a frustrated gesture with his hand. So I feel like they're going to be going through some. Well, they weren't there again. Yeah, and I really hope that we still continue to see Roy Kent's softer side. Through season one and one to three, that was some of the best parts where he tries to be a really sort of stern figure in front of his guys in the locker room, but then he loves Sarrita Romance novel, for example. I think that was just absolutely beautiful and a great way to pay tribute to the sensitivities of his character. But uh yeah, I think that that that's gonna be a sort of central issue for Juno Temple's Keely and Roy Kent as well.

SPEAKER_05

It looks like Roy's Roy's gonna be the head coach of the map, man's team by looks. Yeah. Because he wasn't he wasn't there, he wasn't there during the women's games or the practice.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, that's a good notice as well. But he was obviously still there in the building, the first one back.

SPEAKER_05

I reckon he's I reckon he's gonna be the new head coach of the men's team. Don't think Nate's gonna be there. So I didn't think he wasn't there.

SPEAKER_03

Well, well, perhaps, perhaps he will be, but he has a like an off-screen facilitator for the men's team as well.

SPEAKER_05

Because um, like as much as Nate's character uh uh well, I think it did its uh its job what Nate character was meant to do, and I annoy the shit out of me. He's sort of yeah, he's sort of redemption and coming back to the team, and that was really nice. And his relationship with Jade I reckon and sort of sort of like almost like his relationship with Jade is the one that sort of brought him back. He he went to a dark place. I think if he went he went to a dark place because he thought that's what he had to do to get Jade to get respect and to get people to respect him and get Jade to like him. And then once he once him and Jade are together, then he finds out no, I don't have to be addicted to you with Jade. Yeah, she just wanted like I just needed more confidence.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Well he he needed to be more confident in who he was already. Yeah. Yeah, because that's who she loved him for, because it was definitely a pure kind of attraction and love that she felt for him, which was his art.

SPEAKER_04

I uh I love that. I loved that. I love that at the end of um Todassia.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah but um yeah, and it looks and I reckon the women's cast of the women's sports in looks amazing. They've got their uh and then they try to uh make their own version of Danny Roharth, doesn't quite work, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. Well, I feel like that's good because it gives the audience something to latch on to, something comedic as well, something familiar, but then also something very different. And I I liked what she said as well. No, football is good, but there is so much more to life than having gone through that journey, so you know what's cats through, which is a really great quote. So, yeah, in in terms of that, we're getting some new cast members, including Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Marseille, a couple of different soccer players obviously coming through. And there's a lot of talk going around the U-turn that this season is uh approaching, almost like as we discussed a spin-off where it looks at the the women's football team dubbed the Lady Greyhounds. We're obviously still seeing some returning characters, and I reckon Jeremy Swift's Leslie Higgins is going to be playing a big role as well. You saw him holding up the two pieces of paper in the trailer. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I was I was looking at that, and like, yeah, I think you're I think you're more right, but I was hoping that there were contracts. Two contracts. One for him, because he's the facilities manager for the men's team.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, here we go.

SPEAKER_05

He might have the contract to stay with the men's team, or it might be a contract for him to move over and be the facilitator for the women's team and join Ted. Yeah. Or stay with Roy instead of the men's team.

SPEAKER_01

There's the choice.

SPEAKER_05

But I like that. Yeah, I I think that'd be like a cooler choice, but I think you may be more right. He's just being Leslie and being pedantic about like there's costings or something like that.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it'll be interesting to see how much Roy Kent plays a role in this season as well, because we'll have the Diamond Dogs together with Coach Baird Higgins if he comes through and Ted Lasso as well. But if Roy Kent is consistently on doing the men's team, then how much is he gonna play at heart?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, well, I reckon oh, besides the passing talks and stuff that they'll just have run-ins at the club, I reckon Roy is gonna be more focused on Killy Rebecca Socks of the story.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because well, he was very good in seasons one, two, and three at pumping those two ladies up, wasn't he? Like he especially Rebecca, he'd say you don't deserve to feel okay or fine. You you deserve someone that knocks your fucking socks off is these words. That's what what she deserves.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, feel like you've been struck by fucking lightning.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's that's the quote there.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah. So I I I reckon Roy may end up being more like he might hang out and come see Ted every now and then, but I reckon he's even more focused with Keely and Rebecca. More so Keeley, but more so Keely, but Rebecca as well, because Keely's gonna be probably heavily involved with Rebecca.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, which I think will facilitate both their character arcs too. Some notable

Relationships, Leadership, Missing Characters

SPEAKER_03

absences from this season. Obviously, we've got Nick Mohammed as Nathan, who we've talked about as well. Toheeb Jimo as who played Sam Albisania, and uh, we've got obviously Christo Fernandez playing Danny Rojas, and probably my my most sad missing person from this trailer and from this season, obviously, Phil Dunsters, Jamie Tart. He was my favorite character of season ones through three. I feel like Jamie Tart had committed to another TV series, may play a cameo role at some stage, which I hope happens. My prediction is that he will. That's my prediction here and there. Jamie Tart will return in season four.

SPEAKER_05

Because I think they wanted him. I think they wanted him in the show, but just bad timing.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. So, and he's a fan favorite as well, and obviously plays a great character, Jamie Tart. His arc through seasons one to three is probably my favorite and just a really crazy story.

SPEAKER_05

Him and Roy uh end up being like really good. Like I love I love, I love like when the when they're in Amsterdam. Well, no, yeah, Amsterdam. But when Roy uh when Jamie comes over for Roy's birthday and gives him the shirt where he's changed his name from Roy Kent to Roy's Hey UNG.

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah. I think one of the biggest things that we can look at for this one is obviously Ted's change from coaching the men's soccer team to the women's soccer team. But not only that, I'm interested to see what he does with his family. Because where did they leave it off in season three? He was back in America.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, coaching his son's soccer team.

SPEAKER_03

And he and his ex-wife were kind of co-parenting well together, but they weren't technically together.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, well it it it didn't it didn't say that they were, it didn't say that they weren't.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was left up to the interpretation.

SPEAKER_05

But I think how they navigate that aspect of it will be very because it did seem like uh at the end of this third season, it did seem like uh Ted's ex-wife.

SPEAKER_06

Her and the new the therapist partner, they were having trouble.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

But Ted isn't the kind of guy to Well if they if they break up and they get back together then But yeah, who knows? But it it looked like uh Henry was back and Henry was working at the pub with May.

SPEAKER_03

It'll probably also be interesting to see because because Ted was a very he he started off as not being not very well liked because he was a yank, but by the end of it, everybody, including the community of Richmond, really loved Ted as the coach of the men. So it'd be interesting to see if the men starts to fall in performance, whether he'll get some outward pressure to rejoin the men's team, abandon the women's, and how that will look in the community for him as well. Because there's obviously a few pubgoers and punters and that various like tertiary characters you could say, like May from the the the tavern as well. Yeah, she she might play a a bit of a role. We saw her in the the trailer also. But yeah, I think his pressures will be mostly surrounding.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, because if he they not perform an ego because they he frequent that pub a lot when he was there. And they may and like the those the three guys that always gave him they always heckled him all the time. Like they might be like that trying to pressure him to join back to the men's team because the men's team's suffering or something like that now. But I don't feel like that I I have a feeling that's not gonna be the case purely because then that makes it seem that Roy is doing a shit job. And I don't see them doing that to Roy. No. No.

SPEAKER_03

I think that in in this case as well, it's said that the the Lady Greyhounds are a second division women's team as well, so it may be a similar story of him trying to build them up to get into the Premier League of the the women's competition. Yeah. But it's also been said as well that this season is going to have a pretty much overarching theme of leap before you look.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Which, you know, Ted through seasons one to three started to suffer panic attacks and anxiety and things like that. So taking chances and taking risks as his character goes through these new changes. A couple of things I'm wondering, like, what instigated those changes for one, and then two, how's he gonna cope when he's in this new pond of um of challenge that he's trying to overcome as well?

SPEAKER_01

So it'll be interesting to see, but I am excited. I'm excited, I will say, for Ted Lasso. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And I think the biggest thing for me was seeing Ted back in the building, basically the Richmond building. I think that that was the biggest thing for me. My fear, obviously, is that I don't want them to ruin what they've done. Yeah with seasons one to three in doing season four. And I think that's a genuine fear for a lot of fans.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, and that that's what I I I fear the most is people are gonna look at it and be like, oh, this is just a cash crab rip at the original Teddy Last I'm trying. But yeah, with Jason involved, like I think that's gonna alleviate some of that stress of people thinking it's gonna be just uh not as good because he is still involved and he is flagshipping it.

SPEAKER_03

Uh but not only that as well, but Brett Goldstein is a tremendous writer in his own right as well.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, wasn't she where he wrote the character of Roy?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, there is so much creative fuel behind this that I don't think it's gonna be bad. Like IMDB already lists Ted Lasso as being 8.7 out of 10 with so many ratings already. It's very universally loved. It's gonna have a big audience, and you know, can they hit gold a fourth time? We'll have to wait and see. Yep, 100%.

Jumanji Open World Trailer Reaction

SPEAKER_03

Jumanji Open World is a brand new trailer for the third installment of the brand new Jumanji movies. It is starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Kevin Hart. It has the returning characters also of Jack Black and restar being Karen Gillian as well. It is directed also by Jake Kasdan. They are the teams coming back for a third instalment. It is apparently going to be a reversal of what we're used to. The play characters getting sucked into the game was the new change for number one and two. In this one, the game is coming back out into the real world. Brash.

SPEAKER_01

That sounds extremely familiar.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

The original did that. I honestly think the first of Jum Mungee should have done that.

SPEAKER_05

Anyway. Yeah. Anyway. But I think it's harder with a video game than the bull game, but absolutely.

SPEAKER_03

One thing I've seen of this movie that I do like is that Nick Jonas is returning as seaplane apparently. So hopefully that'll be good. But yeah, this one was going to be released on Boxing Day in Australia or Christmas Day in the US. And yeah, we'll all right. Let's watch this trailer.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_09

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Dr. Brightstone, I'm still what I found you. Of course you will. We have a problem. They're stuck in demo mode. I'm beginning to suspect we're not going to get video game running.

SPEAKER_05

Why did I run like that?

SPEAKER_03

It is probably the only realistic thing about it, but it's never. Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson's friendship on show once again.

Why The New Jumanji Lacks Stakes

SPEAKER_03

Alright. So my initial thoughts of that is I am not excited. I don't like bodyswap movies in general. Just because it gets confusing, but also I hate to say it, but I don't know if these actors have the range to pull that off. Karen Gillian, obviously, yes. Kevin Hart can play an innocent little child perfectly, but like Dwayne, I mean, they're asking him to do too much here. Just put him in car keel and make him punch stuff and drive a car real fast.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. When Dwayne's like, even when Dwayne's gonna play a different character, it's always the same character.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and not only that, they're always dressed the same too. Like he's that being said, I've heard Smash good things about Smashing Machine, but in this particular Smashing Machine's yeah, I've heard the very good things about Smashing Machines. Yeah, in this particular instance, I think that it's just more of the same rehashed to the point where not only that, they're also now stepping on the original where the game came to the real world, but then halfway through the trailer, they're also sucked back into the game. Yeah. Where is where's the sort of story of this movie?

SPEAKER_05

My whole thing is I thought they'll get sucked in again, and this time it was the aunt, the network. And I was like, they're going back into the game again. But when you said that they the aim's coming out, I'm like, finally, they're doing what Jumanji should be doing, and the game's coming out into the real world, and they have to put it back together before the whole place is ruined by Jumanji traps and businesses. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That gives us stakes as well, because it's our world that we care about. But that's that's the thing with these Jumanji movies, these new ones and bodyswap movies as well. Like the characters that like Jack Black, Kevin Hart, The Rock, and Karen Gillian, those characters are all avatars for other characters being inside them. So we're attached to the actors, but we're not attached to those people as characters. They've played somebody different, their personality has been different every every time. So yeah, across the arc of the Jumanji, we don't see very much growth through these characters as well. But then also it's the same thing repeated once again. How many times have we seen somebody get into the rock's body in these Jumanji movies, realize he's really strong, and then punch somebody really hard? It's just been repeated so many times. Yeah. The another thing that I liked about this trailer, and this is not about the movie, it's just something I like to see in movies, is I saw like the rhino in this trailer as it was busting through the cafeteria. Anytime I see a rhino on screen, I'm like, that's good, because I'm hoping this doesn't happen, but in the future they're probably going to be extinct. So people can look at that in this cinema that's gonna be there for forever now in movies and be like, okay, rhino. Yeah, even though it's CGI, but so like here's my take on this thing.

The Jumanji Story We Want

SPEAKER_05

They should have never done one and two, they should never have done it. Here's my take. Don't do it. Should it shouldn't exist? So the starting premise of this movie should have been the first Jumanji.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So they went to play a game. They went to play like they spammed the Jumanji game, it started doing the tribal drum tribal drum beats. They played the game, they went to four characters went to play it. Because I I think they should have played homage more to the original. Did they ever do a second Jumanji?

SPEAKER_03

No, they're Satura as a loot sequel.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, like at the very end the drumbeat started again, and I'm like, oh, we're gonna get a second one, and never did. But I reckon maybe someone heard the tale, the story was told about the original Juman like the original Jumanji about those people, and they're like, oh that's a weird story. Let's make a game about it, and then the magic of the Jumanji transferred to this new game, and then the main cast comes out as how they are, and they're a bit janky because it's a prototype game, and they have to try and fix them so they can be the heroes and save the world from all shit. Yeah, and then all I can find a way to get all of them back into the game again. And that's just paying homage but just updating it for newer technology.

SPEAKER_03

The new Jumanji reboot, I feel like it never really worked because the characters themselves were put into these avatars, and that takes away all the stakes for the audience. I think the first initial Jumanji to me, when I watched it in cinemas when I was six or seven years old.

SPEAKER_05

Oh my god, I can't think.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm sorry. You're a teacher, aren't you? I was ab yeah, I was ab I was completely terrified within that cinema because it was a normal guy, a normal woman, a normal child, like a boy and a normal girl, and they were facing the challenges of the jungle, and that was the That was the heartbeating tension within Jumanji. Whereas when these characters go into these characters, absolutely, yeah. Because it's a normal person facing a trained hunter with a gun. Yeah. Like these avatars are fully muscled. They come with superpowers already. So it takes all the stakes away. And really, it's just a quest to find the whatever MacGuffin they've chosen for this movie. So I feel like the avatars never really worked for me. And then the avatars changed personalities all the way through. So you couldn't even connect with them in that way. It's not character-driven at all, which I don't like. I don't I don't feel like we ever needed a reboot of these Jumanjis because the perfect thing to do would be to follow the old cartoon series that they made about Jumanji, where Alan Parrish was still within the game and two other kids got sucked into the game as well. Yeah. And then it was that's the movie I wanted to see. I wanted to and you could recast Alan in this modern day already. I know you don't like it, but if you did that in this modern day, you did it for a recast Robin Williams, really? Well, no, because he wouldn't have grown up to be Robin Williams at that stage. It would have happened before he came out of the board game. So you just have to Yeah, you gotta cast somebody who's younger than Robin Williams, and then get the the two kids to come in, and then he's rescuing them to get out of the game. And then the tension would be that maybe there's a point at the end where everybody gets to go home, but then the portal only has time enough for two people to get set back. He has to make the decision, either he goes or he's like, No. But then we know from the Jumanji movie that originally came out, he does get brought back out of the game when somebody rolls the correct number. Like that would be the movie that I wanted to see, where Alan Parrish just goes through that growth and then comes out again and and saves the next two things.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and and they maybe maybe uh like Arthur saves them and you gotta make it join up.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I was thinking, like maybe it's almost it almost fits like that you you watch the start of Jumanji until Alan gets sucked in, and then you watch the new reboot of Jumanji that happens, and then you watch the end of. But yeah, I gotta watch Jumanji again, the original. Yeah. We should do that movie on this podcast as an episode of the Phantom Portals, because that movie is top tier.

SPEAKER_05

And the thing is that there was meant to be like a like a rip-off sort of thing of Jumanji. I fucking still fucking great. Oh fucking. Jack Shepard is great in that. He is so fucking good in that. And even Josh Hudson. Josh Hudson is so fucking good in that. And even fucking uh Kristen Bell is good. Christian Stewart, sorry.

SPEAKER_03

That's one of her first roles. Yeah. Great movie. Great movie.

SPEAKER_01

Look, great. These ones.

SPEAKER_05

The plot twist the plot twist at the end. So fucking so good.

SPEAKER_01

Perfect.

SPEAKER_05

I love it. Perfect. No, no, no.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think this movie has sold me, but it's a Christmas Day release. What it has to compete with, I don't think this is probably gonna be the biggest bomb of the year. Honestly. Yeah, probably. I would predict that it's gonna be the biggest bomb of the year.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I I reckon that they've got too many characters. Yeah. Too many characters for a non-established world.

SPEAKER_03

100%.

Lanterns Trailer Mystery And Tone

SPEAKER_03

Lanterns is the newest DC TV series coming out in combination with HBO. It stars Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart and Carl Chandler as an older grizzly Hal Jordan. It also stars Nathan Phillian as Guy Gardner, which was a surprise, and also we've seen his Guy Gardner in Superman. This is said to have been yeah, great casting. It's said to be a combination between supernatural and true detective.

SPEAKER_05

Fun fact, fun fact too. And Nathan Nathan Fillion's also the voice of Green Lane in the Justice League movies.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

The Hal Hal Jordan, though.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, Hal Jordan in Justice League movies.

SPEAKER_03

I was actually super surprised he was cast as Guy Gardner and not Hal Jordan. Because I think James Gunn is looking for diversity between his lanterns, I would say. Yeah. And Guy Gardner obviously is probably the more abrasive.

SPEAKER_05

Well, see Guy Guy Gardner technically should be like a like a jock.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Like a stuck up jock.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like he accidentally.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, yeah, he does. But like I I look at Death Phil and I I don't really see a jock. Like I don't see like a leatherman wearing football dude.

SPEAKER_03

No, I only see him wearing cop uniforms. Yeah, but speaking of cops, Green Lanterns, Green Lantern Corpse is the police force of the galaxy.

SPEAKER_07

Take the break.

SPEAKER_03

There's the charm. There's the charm. Okay, my first thoughts of this one obviously was the mention of the word manhunters. And I think it's it could be one of two things, because manhunters, I think everybody's mind automatically goes to the Martian Manhunters. But the Manhunters were also a intergalactic police force that were enacted by the Guardians before the Green Lantern Corpse. And they were essentially robots. Uh they could take on any shape, but they were, as all robots do, taking things a little bit too seriously in terms of justice. And the Guardians needed to replace them. So they wiped them all out and replaced them with the Green Lantern Corpse.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So it could be either one. So we did see a Martian. Well, you'd never know if that's a Martian or a techno-organic robot that is changing itself. Looks like a Martian. I'm not too sure. To look like well, to look like a person.

SPEAKER_05

No, wait, that that that was a that was a go if we go back and you stop it on that, you go back and stop in there. Do you it's a hundred percent Martian because it's a hundred percent the Martian uniform.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I was gonna say you're just sold by the uniform, but you know that these creatures can also change into any form they like. Like I don't know.

SPEAKER_05

But uh I think I also like the use of the word alien instead of you know techno organic.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well well remember he said they're aliens, I have a hunch. You know?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And but yeah, but uh but also what stroke me off is the fact that uh if that's the case, depending on how which which sort of comic and which show and which thing you follow, either there's only one Martian left, or there's still more Martians, but only one Martian manhunter.

SPEAKER_03

Well, we did see kind of like a red planet and then a skull. So whether that's the wiping out of the Martians, maybe.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, or the the wiping the wiping out of the white Martians, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and then we're looking here as well at the like if we're talking about the manhunters, they went rogue. There was obviously the Sector Triple Six massacre that they did as well, because of a flaw in their programming. And I like I feel like the villains are going to be these robotic manhunters, and maybe they're throwing in those aliens there as the victims of these manhunters to start with, but they're obviously coming to Earth, taking these victims, changing faces throughout the show as well. It's gonna be more dark, more secretive, and I feel like it's got like an old west sort of style to the episodes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

My thing is we kind of got like the the hometown America that we were looking at, but then there was also those larger-than-life places like the prison and things where we saw Sinestra being kept as well. So keeping it grounded, but then also looking at the wider universe of the DCU that we kind of had a look at a brief look at in Supergirl as well, will be interesting to see how they marry those two together.

SPEAKER_05

It looks good on paper, and I I get where they're going.

SPEAKER_03

I I think as well this series will act as a passing of the torch because Aaron Pierre's Jon Stewart is obviously a young in-training Green Lantern, to the point where he sees himself as a backup, but how Jordan knows the truth that he is in fact his replacement. It kind of mirrors those old West sheriff sort of handoff style. The old roughened police guy is sort of at the end of his rope. You know, he's getting too old for this shit, and the new guy is sort of coming in. We talked before about how how Jordan usually goes well when his personality is sort of wisecracking, a little bit jokey, but this definitely isn't the case with the Carl Chandler version that we saw. I mean, we saw a little bit of charm at the end where he was kind of looking at opening the beer, but he's kind of abrasive towards uh Jon Stewart in in his training methods.

SPEAKER_05

He's trying to because he could coddle and take his time, but I think in the back of Hal's mind, I think Hal, and as he had that concept in Sternestra saying, uh, he's like, no, he's my replacement. I think Hal knows the end is coming for him. I think it might have caught up to him quicker than he probably thought. And he has to train John quickly. So instead of him being on coddling him and taking the time to train him, he's like, You gotta fly before you can jump.

SPEAKER_03

Well, here's the prediction, then. Here's the the question I'll ask you.

Hal Jordan’s Future And Fear

SPEAKER_03

Do you think at the end of this Lantern series that Hal Jordan, played by Carl Chandler, dies at the end of the Lantern series as a physical passing of the torch as well as a symbolic one? It's been noted that Aaron Pierre's Jon Stewart will be in the next Superman movie of tomorrow. So he's the carryover, and we know Guy Gardner also appeared in the first Superman movie. So the question remains like, will Hal Jordan's character die in this in this series as I don't think he will.

SPEAKER_05

So always if forever, they've always been able to have multiple lanterns in How So I reckon I reckon Hal's passing the torch on to John. And John will help Expert Ben in the Next Superman movie, and he'll be around, but I reckon eventually Hal might end up going to and he might be uh like an instructor for the Lancers because he's he's sort of he's in retirement retirement mode.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I feel like it's gonna be darker than that. The way that this has been marketed by DC, I feel like he is on a path toward failure. Or, as many primary quarterbacks, once they get towards the end of their career, they start to do drastic things to stay in the game, and maybe those drastic things actually take him out of the game quicker or lead him down a path that is impure and not looked at well by the Guardians. That sort of falls into a line with the 1994 storyline Emerald Twilight, where he kind of took on a the parallax persona. That happened after a very big personal tragedy, though, where his home city was basically destroyed, and then he went and took on more of the Green Lantern's power from the battery that he should have, and it infected him basically, and he ended up becoming parallax and and becoming an ancient parasitic villain. So whether that happens or not, I'm not too sure. But Hal Jordan has been known in the comics to be a tragic character that suffers a terrible end.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, but he the the thing is he's always usually come out of it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he definitely did, as in comic books, he returned and his the Green Lantern active once again and the sh most brightest shining light of the Green Lantern course.

SPEAKER_05

And that's the thing, because how Hal Jordan is is the is the guy. He is the Green Lantern. He's the Green Lantern as other Green Lantern's have to aspire to. Even though every Green Lantern's vastly different.

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna say as well, I love Carl Chandler. Oh, yes as a character. Yes. Absolutely amazing. I think he's gonna do a good job as as Hal Jordan. My interpretation of the character in my head though, I'm not sure if he's gonna play it like that.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I think I'm gonna have to fall in love with a different version of the character.

SPEAKER_05

I was hoping to get a Hal Jordan redemption, young Hal Jordan. I don't mind it being the old how Hal Jordan passing on his wisdom, but I reckon he's going to survive purely because I think I think John will have to save him, and that's when John will be like, I'm ready to be the new lantern.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. That's honestly how these mentor stories usually go. The student always overtakes the master, but I feel like Jon Stewart is going to be the purer version of the lanterns in this, or how Jordan is going to be so marked by tragedy or his past.

SPEAKER_05

John John John always is, because John John is a cop.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And so his his line of justice is always usually like straight now, like on the straight narrow. Like he is He's lawful good. Yeah, exactly. To a sometimes to a fault.

SPEAKER_03

Well, he comes off as very humble in this trailer. Like he's talking to the lady at the bar and he's not really bragging, and he's trying to learn the role as best he can. And it also seems like he's not trying to take over from Hal. But Hal's conversation with Sinestro tells me, and his facial expression when he was talking to him, tells me that he's fearful that he will be replaced by John sooner than he would like.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And whether that's something that eats at his fear or eats it his pride, I'm not too sure because a lot of the marketing towards this is centered around, are you afraid? Do you fear? Like that kind of thing. Yeah, well, Sinestro was the yellow ring. It's synonymous with the Green Lantern lore or mythos, because as you said, the Yellow Lantern ring is the ring of fear, which takes over Sinestro, who was a Green Lantern, which may be why we saw him in the prison. Interestingly, as well, Hal and Sinestro were good friends. And I find it.

SPEAKER_01

Sinestro was his mentor.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I found it interesting that he has gone to see him as a confidant.

SPEAKER_05

Perhaps that's it's well, if it's interesting. Did he go see him or was Hal also in the prison?

SPEAKER_03

That's a that's a really good point because yeah, a lot of people know Sinestro as the villain, so maybe that's but see this.

SPEAKER_05

This is this is old Hal. So this is old Sinestro. So they might have already had their clashes long, long ago, and Sinestro's like has been removed of all his power. Maybe they're both prisoners.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It'll be interesting to see as well what ties these guys because it's set in Nebraska in like American Heartland. So what ties these two characters to this location to care that these things are sort of going on on the ground level? I know that they've got a duty to serve and protect on on a galaxy sort of level in the sector, and if the manhunters are orchestrating these crimes, but it's in like the setting of Nebraska was interesting to me in terms of it's so far ado from like our city or space, anything that they could have done with them.

SPEAKER_05

I'm trying to remember where John was a police officer. I'm pretty sure he was in the city. He's a police officer. I'm pretty sure John was he was here. I think he was in the army and then he became a police officer, and then he and then he became a Green Lantern. But on that on the sort of the same sort of note, I I hope that they don't ruin John's style. So each Green Lantern has their own style. Hal is very imaginative with the things he uses. Hal's never really been overly militaristic, he's always been creative. That was his biggest thing. He like he was always great. He does like making jets because he's a pilot, but he's always been creative using baseball bats for things, like baseball mitts and like all these big like weird contraptions in the in the animated movies and cut in the comics and stuff that he's always sort of more thinking outside the box with things. Guy Gardner's always been he's kind of like a bruiser, isn't he? Yeah, he's a bruiser, like he is like brick walls and buddy steel pylons and but also like fuck useful things like how like in the movie I think was pretty clever and how like he uses the finger. Yeah, like it's also Guy Gardner, he's cocky, cocky. John is the militaristic one. John's the one who always uses like military things.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and he was also has a background I've read before in some of the comics as an architect as well. Yeah. So he has that uh artistic, I'll say, background, but architects draw things very linearly, so all of his creations are always sort of machinery that works in a particular way, so he can imagine it and create it, but then also the buildings and things that he would create with his ring would also be very precise. Yeah. So I think that comes out in his character too, from what we've seen from the trailer, because he does seem like a very calm, think first kind of character. Whereas I if I look at the way that uh Carl Chandler is playing Hal Jordan, he seems to be a little bit more impulsive or act upon his feelings a little more. We saw with the water being thrown on him and the way that he's verbally chastising John as he's sort of training him. And John is there very much accepting the advice and the role that he is kind of taking on as well. But one thing I'll I would like to watch and see and look for again is are these two characters sharing one ring, or do they have one inch?

SPEAKER_05

Well, I know in the comments they all have their own.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but but I always thought that Jon Stewart got Hal's ring after Hal passed.

SPEAKER_05

Hal got she got in one in one adaptation, that's where Hal Jordan seemingly dies and his ring flies off and finds John, and then it and then it's and then you see how he is brainwashed and becomes a bad guy.

SPEAKER_03

Jordan is said to also have the strongest amount of willpower, which is what powers the Green Lantern.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and and cause c because he's so he's so like he's generally always uh happy or lucky all all about like and uh it's a judgment to his creative side, like he he has that uh imagination that he can always he always thinks he can think of something to get him out of trouble. Like he always has that hope, like he always has detriment sometimes too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. Like to a fault.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, like like because if something does go wrong uh and something bad does happen, that's usually when it hits him the hardest because he uh always thinks that he has enough hope and enough ingenuity to get him out of any situation, and then when it doesn't, it hits him usually pretty hard. Especially especially when it's something to do with his like loved ones or like someone close to him.

SPEAKER_03

100%. But yeah, even even in the poster art that we're seeing for the lantern's TV show, you can see that Carl Chandler's Hal Jordan is standing on one side and his hand is obviously illuminated by a ring, and Aaron Pierre's hand is not illuminated by a ring. So that leads me to believe that they're possibly sharing one ring, and also all of the talk that they're doing about replacements and things like that. I feel like Hal is giving John his ring to practice with, but he hasn't been given his own yet. And maybe that will occur within this TV series, or maybe Hal will hand the ring over to John and how something else will happen to Hal completely.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, he might just retire.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Honestly, with this series, when I'm watching it, I'll be more interested to see how the dynamic between those two lanterns go, as opposed to the answer to the mystery of who's solving the murders. And I think that's perfectly fine.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

Clayface Body Horror First Look

SPEAKER_03

DC is releasing a new movie, Clayface. It is a body horror, monster horror, showbiz drama that is being directed by James Watson. It is a step left, we'll say, in the DCU, considering that the first two movies they've released is Superman and Supergirl. This shows the range that James Gunn has been talking about. About of this DC universe that he is creating. He says no story will appear like another, but they will still have threads of connection through them. One thing I'm interested in seeing in this trailer, Brash, is how we will be uh seeing Gotham for the first time in James Gunn's DCU. We've seen it obviously in Robert Pattinson's Batman, but obviously we know they're not connected. So this will be the first trailer that we see, Gotham City.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You're a horror fan?

SPEAKER_05

I dabble. I dabble. I dabble. Well, I I hope I also hope they do playface justice because his story is bad too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Well, it says here that they're also looking at Matt Hagen, who is the second iteration of Clayface, the most famous iteration of Clayface. He is also the one that's depicted in Batman the Animated series. And Matt Hagen is going to be played by Tom Reese Harris. So I haven't seen this guy in anything, really. Oh, new like that. Yeah. So yeah, he's been in a couple of episodes of Doctor Who and some theater stuff. And we'll just have to see how this goes. Because yeah, my horror tolerance is this big. And for those people watching, I'm doing a small sign right here.

SPEAKER_10

Show me. Show me. What do you want, Mr. Ham? No idea. I have no idea who we are.

SPEAKER_01

Well, there he is.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, so I was wondering if we were going to see the clay face that I know, which is the big clay monstrous version in the trailer. And obviously, we only saw it at the end there from over-the-shoulder view, but we definitely saw some body horror-esque.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, this is this is sorry. This is not going to be for people who are not fans of body horror at all.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So usually not my cover tea, but I'm still intrigued to watch because I love DC's content and it actually looks beautifully made. Yeah. It's a horror movie, but it actually looks cinematography-wise, pretty professionally and beautifully done. Especially coupled with the music as well and the way they were cutting those various different shots. I think that this is going to be a piece of art, as much as it kind of looks disgusting at some points, too. But it's definitely different as well for DC. And I think that's what might force some people away. But if it's got me sort of considering watching a horror movie, then yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I saw your face watching it, and I was like, that's why I got me seeing your face watching it.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it kind of reminds me of like movies like The Fly from way back in the day when you know there's a scientist that's looking to ambition gets in the way as well. Like you've obviously got two scientists there. One, I think it's Naomi Aki that we saw, who's playing Caitlin Korr. She seems to be the scientist in charge, delivering this serum that is going to change Matt Hagen into Playface. She's obviously got this experimental thing that needs human trials. And she's obviously driven by ambition and driven by this drive to see her work succeed, so it can then be obviously used in other avenues and probably make her rich and famous. Whereas Matt Hagen, I feel like his motivation obviously comes from vanity, but yeah, probably also a little bit of vengeance as well. Like he wants his life back, he wants his fame and his fortune back taken off as he wants justice on the people who like did it to him. Obviously, D fate like fucked him up to lack of a better way. But yeah, I think from that side of it, one thing that I will say, I didn't really see Gotham as a character as I've sort of talked about before, in terms of Gotham being a living, breathing, sort of underbelly of a world. That that could have been anywhere, for example. Yeah, like if they said this was set in Vegas, okay, that could have looked like Vegas. Whereas if we're looking at Gotham in like Robert Pattinson's Batman, Gotham was a character in that that series.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I think I think at the moment they might be just hiding it for now because they they arc and they might even unveil possibly the Batman character at the end of the Yeah. Because realistically usually in trailers you have like your main character and yes, Clayface may be the a bad guy in this, or the anti-hero in this, because there are other he is taking on other bad people, so that technically makes him an anti-hero, but he's doing it in a bad way. But there's no real yeah, there's no real good guy in this movie in this movie. No. So there's no there's no real like maybe you like no there's no there's no like Officer Gordon chasing after him or something like that.

SPEAKER_03

Or no no Commissioner Gordon. But yeah, this is actually directed by the same guy that did Speak No Evil, which I I didn't see but stars James Mack Boy. Did you see that one?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Yeah. It's it's pretty good. It's pretty good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's pretty good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, probably not my my cup of tea again. But he he's also done an episode of Black Mirror, also. So he is very horror aligned, we could say.

SPEAKER_05

And especially with like Speak No Evil, Speaking of Evil is like very psychological. Which I think this is I mean, this this this is less less like less contemporary horror and more psychological horror.

SPEAKER_03

Psychological body horror, yeah. So I I think like the prosthetics in this look absolutely amazing as well, because there's obviously done some work with that. And Matt Hagen's body work is is really good too. But scene that freaked me out the most in this trailer was obviously the scissors in the moving plane. And that's probably him just realizing obviously his face is mutating in this space. Reminded me of waking up with really bad conjunction.

SPEAKER_05

Yes. Yeah, actually, yeah. Yeah, yeah. That feeling. I'm very like that very I'm very keen for that.

SPEAKER_03

I so thinking about the like let's have a look at the characters that we saw in the the trailer as well. We obviously saw some of the the villains or the underbelly of Gotham in the you know the the mob, they've been there and obviously disfigures Hagen's character as well. The reason for that we're not too sure. But I think the horror is something that's going to stand out and the torment as well. But the toxic obsession with ambition, for one. But one thing I might find hard to get behind in this movie Brash is this character's motivations for seeking out such a radical treatment for something like making his face look pretty again. Like as a normal person in the cinema looking at that, it doesn't seem like enough for me to get behind this guy and be like, okay, that seems like a natural course of offense.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I think I think it's because he was so used to his life and he liked his life so much, and then like in one act it was taken away to a point where and the point that the people who did it got away with it, and the he it was done, you know, like the it was so bad that there was no way, no matter how much money he had, of fixing it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was almost like they were sending a message, because that's usually what people do um when they're looking at disfiguring somebody like that. They obviously know he's famous, and if that disfigurement goes into the public eye, they're going to know that Gotham's probably a dangerous place.

SPEAKER_05

So yeah, it's and that's why like I I think out towards the end of that movie we we're possibly gonna see a Batman. Surely because we get to the point if he does start killing all those people, there's in that there's nowhere in that trailer that shows any sort of real like good guy trying to stop him from killing those people. You have the sort of uh doctor who caused the thing with her treatments, who sort of seems to be some sort of ends up sort of being like a semi-love interest by the looks or confidence person that he is close with in this movie.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, similar like Victor Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster relationship, where there is obviously he uh is the subject of her experiment, so the affection gets blurred between whether she likes him or whether she wants the experiment to succeed so keeps him alive and keeps him safe for those sorts of reasons.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and and there's no yeah, there's no nothing, no one to stop him.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So that's why I'm thinking at the end, he may not get stopped, but I reckon that's when they might introduce the Batman character to potentially be the one to stop him, maybe not that movie, but the next m the Batman movie they do, it might be centered around him stopping Clayface.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah, or at least him appearing in some way in Gotham City in some sort of background area. But I think the origin for this clay face is different from the comic books as well. Like he was in a car accident, I believe, in the comic books.

SPEAKER_05

Which also I think is why they haven't why Gotham in this doesn't feel like a character. Because I think they're saving I I think their focus their main focus is on the clayface story and then at the very end is sort of when it becomes clear that this is Gotham. They'll bring in the Batman, and then that's when it becomes clear that this is Gotham, and now this is because if they bring in like they may imagine that it's Gotham City, and they may say Gotham City, there might be some tippers in there you'll will see during the movie that the show that this is actually Gotham, like newspaper clippings or something. Maybe there'll be a Batman something to do with Batman in a news clipping or Master Vigilante, yeah, Master Vigilante something or something like that.

SPEAKER_03

Like they did with the Penguin series when they just showed the bat signal at the end.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. And I think that's so that's I think there might be maybe stippers out during the movie, but I don't think they want to take away from Clayface to turn it into Batman. So if it Ice even though it might be set in Gotham, I reckon they're gonna separate talking too much about Gotham until the end.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And then and then at the very end, even in a post-credit scene or something like that, or or an ending scene of the movie, that's when they might introduce Batman, and then that's when it like all of a sudden the setting becomes this is Gotham.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Because we are also getting uh dynamic duos from DC Studios pretty soon in 2028, which will it's an animated movie, but that will also show us a sort of vision of Gotham City that James Gunn is kind of looking at. But in terms of this clayface movie, I think it's definitely obsession-driven. There's a lot of ambition in it, and I feel like the actors in it are also gonna do an amazing job. And if it's gonna get me to watch some horror, I think it's done a good job of the trailer

Hype Meter Rankings And Winner

SPEAKER_03

there. Alright, let's slip into our lists now, our hype meters from one to five rating these movies on how likely or how much we want to see these movies after watching the trailers. Trailers are designed to make people want to see movies. Let's see whether they did their job. Number five, Brash, we'll start at number five, uh, and you can say yours and then I'll say mine, and we'll see if they're different or the same. This is going to show how different our taste is as well. Yeah. In terms of stuff the things are excited for. This is gonna be interesting. Let's reveal our fifth one straight up. Fifth one, straight up. Mine is Jumanji 3.

SPEAKER_05

Mine is also Jumanji 3.

SPEAKER_03

I'm a very avid fan of going to the cinema. Like I would happily miss this one, unfortunately. Not a fan of Dwayne the Rock Johnson on a good day, and this just isn't a franchise I'm into. I don't like the direction they've gone in. The trailer didn't do much for him.

SPEAKER_05

The only way you could do Jumanji is by paying homage to him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. Alright, number four. I have Clayface. And number four. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

As much as you can probably like it, you're probably the horror's still probably getting you.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it the horror it's not that it's getting me. The horror is making me cautious. Cautious to and and caution isn't really synonymous with hyping me up to see it. Because the reason I'm I would go to see this is to alleviate that caution or that anxiety, or or see the story, or see the the curiosities behind it, but then I'm I'm just sort of cautious about how long those pictures will remain in my head. But I'm interested to see who had DC takes it into this direction as well.

SPEAKER_01

So Clayface is my number four. What's your number four? Tuesday. Ooh, that's a surprise.

SPEAKER_05

Yep. Uh uh after seeing the trailer. It'll be cool. A and just tampering my hypedness of it. Because I feel if I get too hype for this movie, it's going in with low expectations. Exactly. So that way it can only hopefully exceed my expectations. Because I think they're gonna be doing too much with not enough time to do it.

SPEAKER_03

My third place was Avengers Doomsday for the exact same reason. Loves to see all the characters on the screen, but yeah, again, it's gonna be hard to pull off.

SPEAKER_01

So third Avengers Doomsday. What's your third?

SPEAKER_05

Oh, okay. I was watching the trailer. I I'm still excited to see it. But I wouldn't say it's because like I I like I think less any less of it now, but I think my expectation of it is it's it's still gonna be good.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So I I I can't wait to watch it. It's coming out soon, and um the first day it's out, I'm gonna be watching it. But it hasn't sort of like going to watch it more because I think it's just gonna still just be good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, my number two is Ted Lasso because I love character-driven stories and these are warm, fuzzy characters. We were talking comfort shows before we started rolling. This was a comfort show for me. I feel like it's gonna be the exact same. I'm actually really keen to watch this with my partner Kali because she loves soccer football and obviously a women's team, and it's just a really nice set of characters. So this is something I'm really keen for, something I'm keen to share with my my partner to watch.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, number two, Ted Lasso. Watch your number two. Clayface.

SPEAKER_06

Well, what yeah, I th I threw you off the I threw you off.

SPEAKER_03

That's a surprise for me. Clayface, yeah, there you go. Well, what what what caused the drop? Because obviously now your number one is lanterns, my number one is lanterns, which is great.

SPEAKER_05

I'm still super hyped for clayface, but I hadn't seen the trailer for it. I was just super hyped at the fact that we're getting like uh because the penguin, the TV show for the penguin that came out. I fucking loved that show. That was an amazing show. It was so, so good. When I heard that there's a clayface movie coming out, like, fuck yes, let's keep these like villain rosters. Hell yeah. Let's like we always get these superhero solo movies, let's get some villain hero uh movies. And watching the uh watching the trailer, I think it didn't I wouldn't say like I think I was so hyped for it because I had no idea. So I was like, ooh, Super Geen, now that's in a trailer and I know sort of what it's about and I just have sort of seen how it's gonna play out in a way, I I say it would reduce the hypedness a little bit because I have seen it now.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. So the trailer did the opposite of what a trailer did.

SPEAKER_05

Well, it I I don't think yeah, I was hyped because of the unknown, because I'm like, oh this is gonna be interesting. I'm I'm very like keen on this. But now seeing the um trailer, I wouldn't say it has reduced my hypedness for it, I think it's solidified it.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, so it's a strong topic.

SPEAKER_05

It's it's hit my it's hit the plateau now. Like I was really hyped about it, and it was like, oh I know now that I've seen it, I'm like, yep, cool. That's what on my to watch list.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and we started for you with lanterns in number three or four, and now it's obviously in your number one.

SPEAKER_05

Lances for four.

SPEAKER_03

About that. Yeah, and now it's number one. So that trailer obviously is.

SPEAKER_05

And and it's what it's what you it's what you said. You know, is that like sometimes you change things when we talk. Yeah. I think after we we I think we talked about lanterns pretty much the most, besides maybe Doomsday, but that's because Doomsday has a bunch of tutorials.

SPEAKER_03

We could have gone for another hour.

SPEAKER_05

There's too much, too much in Doomsday to talk about. But I think we talked about Lantis probably the second longest besides Doomsday. Yeah, and I think that has hyped me up the most because I think it did the perfect example of a trailer and has left so many questions.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's exactly what I was about to say because I feel like a trailer's job is to entice but not to spoil it. And I feel like this lantern's trailer has done exactly that.

SPEAKER_05

We've seen both of the characters. We were like fucking we were like Charlie from Always Stunning with the board of all the fucking all the shit like speculations and shit. Like we don't know where it's like, yeah, like when we were talking about like the different possibilities of whether like what's gonna happen, where they're gonna is it the Martian Manhunters, is it the manhunters that the guardians created? Uh the um yeah, the guardians created is it is it yeah, the guardians is is how like does Hal end up turning bad? Does he stay good? Does he die? Does he live? Does he retire? Will we see Killer Walk? But we see Killerwalk. Is Killerwalk still alive? Is he really old? We see Sinestro and we see Hal in the same place in prison. But from I'm gonna have to watch that trailer again because was Hal in the prison and Sinestro was visiting him, or were they both in the prison and how went to the city?

SPEAKER_03

Or if we're talking about his thing or hold Sinestro, Sinestro could be the leader of his own thing and he's captured how yeah, like he could be going to visit his prison.

SPEAKER_05

We don't know, yeah. Or they could both be in prison and how Sinestro is out of selling. He walks past Hal Cell and goes, Hey, I know you, I know you.

SPEAKER_03

No, I I completely agree. I think this lantern gives us enough to entice, not enough to spoil. And the relationship dynamic between Carl Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's Jon Stewart, I'm hooked.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I'm there. I just I just I want to see though, I want to see because John in pretty much any media is always like pretty like stoic and serious. Yeah. I want to know if if by the end of this, because uh what what we've seen so far, he's fairly young. Like when well, I think when John usually gets his ring, he's already like mid-20s. No, no, he's already like 30. Like he he's he's already like established. Like so seeing a young version of John and seeing how he's a bit more he's a bit more like he seems a bit more timid and he seems a bit more like baby. So I I wonder if by the end of this uh if if Hal was to die, is that a reason why he becomes so stoic? Or throughout the through the training and everything like that, and because how instead of Hal's probably usual so rigid as well, like rigid to the rules, because he's lost someone before because of a mistake or something. Yeah, or that or or because of because how would how how would probably normally train a train someone would be to be very open, to be creative and be all sort of things, but because they he probably doesn't have that time, he has to do it quickly. That's why he becomes so stoked because how has to change his training method of how you usually probably will train someone to be creative, because that's the whole point of like your the hope ring is to be creative and to be hopeful to have like be like free almost.

SPEAKER_01

A force of voice, basically, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So him instead being really strict to being like drill sergeant almost in a way of training John, and John also having I don't know, I'd say I don't really know what the backstory is. I don't know what the backstory of John is. Like how they're going, like, what is John's backstory in this? Is he like there were comics in that where he was a police officer or in the army?

SPEAKER_03

I'm glad we're both keen for
