Welcome to the Getting to Clarity podcast.

Speaker 3:

The place where busy leaders discover how to create more success in their leadership journey with less sacrifice in their life.

Speaker 2:

Here's your host, debbie Peterson, of Getting to Clarity.

Speaker 1:

All right. You know, in my world, leadership is most impactful when it is anchored in clarity clarity of purpose, vision, direction, and that's why, as we start moving toward 2025, it is really the perfect time of year now to pause, to reflect and to think about what a meaningful vision, a leadership vision, will be for 2025. One that aligns with your why and really connects to your why, with success for you, and that moves beyond you and it filters down to your team and your organization. So it's less about setting goals and it's more about understanding why you do what you do you know. So consider who benefits the most from your work, from your leadership, and how do you then create a practical roadmap that ties to your vision for next year. So, using the Clarity Compass framework, we're going to do that Create your leadership vision and plan for 2025. So we're going to start with why do you do what you do, why do you lead, and I'm not talking about the you know, the tasks that you check off or the smart goals that you create although I do love smart goals but I'm looking for the deeper purpose behind it, all, the reason that drives you to want to make an impact, what drew you to this role, to this organization, to this industry in the first place? What kind of impact do you want to create through your work? And, when it's all said and done, what sort of legacy do you want to leave as a leader? Legacy do you want to leave as a leader? And as you explore these questions, it will help you uncover your own answers, because your why is your North Star and it is the foundation of everything that you do, and it's the key to making sure that your vision and your goals are pointed in a place or in a way that it's meaningful for you. So think about why you lead, and when you're clear on this, it really helps to sharpen your focus and it it kind of sets the tone for how you're gonna show up next year. Let your why guide you forward.

Speaker 1:

So here are some questions to uncover your why. Who relies on you most in your role? How does your leadership improve their experience or their results? What do they need from you to be able to thrive next year? When do you feel the most energized in your role? The most energized in your role, what achievements or moments in 2024 brought you the most fulfillment? When you get into these reflective sort of questions. Yeah, they're deeper questions. It's not the surface level answer you're looking for. You need to go deeper than that, but they provide you with so much information about how you're wired. But they provide you with so much information about how you're wired.

Speaker 1:

So, now that you have defined your why, let's create a vision that's aligned with it, and also aligned with who you serve and what fulfills you. So, in articulating your vision for 2025, your vision should be a stretch, it should be a little more bold, go outside of your comfort zone, but it should also be realistic, so inspiring but actionable. And again, I'm going to give you some structure to guide you in doing this. Let's say, for instance, you're a new team lead and you're stepping into your new role for the first time. You've never managed people before. So here's how you might structure your leadership vision for 2025 using some of those questions that we just before. So here's how you might structure your leadership vision for 2025 using some of those questions that we just covered.

Speaker 1:

So you might first start with what is my ultimate goal for 2025? And it might sound something like this Well, my goal is to build a team that is cohesive but performs well together. Where people feel supported, they have clarity about you, know who they are, what they're doing and they're engaged in their work. And so, by the end of 2025, I want to improve team engagement scores by 20% and, from a time management perspective, 90% of project delivery will be on time, and this gives you clarity of direction. How does this align with your why? Is the second part of this so with a goal like this? It also ties into your deeper purpose as a leader to create an environment where people feel seen right, that they feel valued and that they're empowered and have the tools to be able to succeed. So your why might be I lead because I believe people perform their best when they are supported in that way, where they are heard and they're part of a shared vision. So you want to align your ultimate goal with your why. So what this does is it makes it less about just hitting numbers and it makes sure that you're showing up as the kind of leader that you want to be, so it's tying the two together.

Speaker 1:

So what high level categories are you going to focus on in order to achieve this goal? So, for instance, if we're talking about the goal that I just mentioned, one of the categories that you focus on is team engagement and culture, right. Another one might be clear communication and role clarity people being clear on what their role is. And a third area might be project and time management. So now what we're doing is we're going to we have that overarching goal and we're chunking it down one level to the three categories that you need to focus on to achieve the goal. Now we're going to go down another level and under each of those categories, what are the projects or the tasks that you need to focus on within each category to move the goal? Now we're gonna go down another level and, under each of those categories, what are the projects or the tasks that you need to focus on within each category to move the needle right, to move things forward? So, for instance, I'll give you an example team engagement and culture. So under that, maybe you're going to look at conducting a survey in the first quarter so that you can stay in touch, gather feedback and then also assess what the current challenges are and what the current opportunities are.

Speaker 1:

Under team engagement and culture, you also might host quarterly team building or some sort of bonding activity to make sure that the team is coming together. Another item under team engagement and culture might be that there's a peer recognition program that you put together to celebrate successes and to help each other celebrate each other's successes, right, and then, under clear communication and role clarity well, under that you might schedule one-on-one meetings with each team member. And and role clarity well, under that you might schedule one-on-one meetings with each team member and maybe you say, okay, I'm going to do that in January because you want to understand what their goals are, what their challenges are, what their strengths are. Maybe, under clear communication and role clarity, you're talking about updating the role descriptions and making sure that those are distributed, that people are buying into and helping to contribute to their roles according to their strengths. Maybe another item is you hold weekly team huddles so that you're staying on top of priorities and progress and any roadblocks that are coming up.

Speaker 1:

Under the category of project and time management, maybe you implement some sort of a tracking tool to help people be more accountable. Maybe there's a mid-year review process right to evaluate kind of what's going on. How are we doing? Maybe it is delegating more. That that is something under project and time management that you need to focus on. So each consecutive level gets more specific and then bringing it all together. You know, now you have your roadmap and it is your vision for 2025. It's no longer just an idea. You started to map it out and you have an actionable plan. So by focus on these categories and bringing them into specific steps, you're ensuring that there's a steady progress towards your goals and it's aligned with who you want to be as a leader, which is critical.

Speaker 1:

What I encourage you to do is share your vision with your team early in the year, invite them, provide input, and that collaboration is gonna make sure that it's a shared journey. It's just not top down. You know, leadership isn't about having all the answers, but it's really about creating, for yourself and for your team, that clarity so that you can take consistent action right. Let 2025 be the year that you build the foundation for a thriving, high-performing team. Now you don't have to do this by yourself either. Who can help you? Think about mentors, who could share insights from their own leadership journey. Think about coaches, who can help you refine your skills and give you strategies to overcome your challenges. Think about accountability partners, who are you refine your skills and give you strategies to overcome your challenges. Think about accountability partners who are going to check in with you and hold you to what you're committing to Think about subject matter experts like me who can provide very specific expertise to help you reach for and realize your goals. So leverage these sort of relationships to get ahead.

Speaker 1:

Brainstorm solutions and then this will help you stay on track throughout the year. Because the best laid plans you know what can happen with those You've got to have a way to get back on plan. So to do that, consider the regular check-ins. Consider visual reminders, like keeping the roadmap that you create visible on a whiteboard or a digital dashboard, or even on a sticky note on your desk. Make sure that you're celebrating the wins. You know that helps to build motivation and momentum. Acknowledge those milestones, no matter how small.

Speaker 1:

Get feedback. Ask your team or ask your peers or leaders in your organization for input on your progress and areas that you need to improve. So what's your next step Within the next 48 hours? I want you to take 30 minutes to kind of go through this process and map out your leadership vision for 2025.
