With so many good books on the roster, let's dive right into our first one. Time to enter this beautiful world that I would 1000 percent live in and meet one very feisty assassin and a tormented king that will have us swooning only a few chapters in. Like you got this episode. Candice is going to lead us through our Shadow and Starlight Synopsis aka her Unhinged Summary detailing all the events of these chapters. Imagine yourself in a different world. You wake up at dawn. The Aurora is rising in a barrage of colors. Luminous moons litter the sky. All is quiet and peaceful. A moon comes crashing down for the first time in 5 million years. As we enter our story, we learn in the prologue that not all is right in this world. We meet the five creators who basically blame the one they don't understand, Kaelas, aka Gothboy, to be at fault for the dragon moon tombs falling again. Caelis is the power of empty space to be filled, while all the other creators have a variety of different tangible powers. Then, dragons enter the chat, cue Kaina and Kenzie's obsession. We learn about moon plumes, saber scythes, and molten moths. And I just need to say, why can't these cuties exist in real life? We learn that these cutie patooties sail into the sky and calcify into moons upon their end to rest in peace. When they begin falling from the sky, Clode, Ignos, Boulder, and Rain of course blamed the black sheep of the family, trapping him in a stone set in a rather fashionable but deadly diadem. While the moon stopped falling for years, one falls again. Hmm, wonder who or what that could be. As we head into chapter one, our girl Brave enters the chat. What's up, girl? We meet here in the Hungry Hollow, aka a sick ass bar I definitely want to visit, if only to punch all the elemental assholes with a superiority complex that frequent the Hungry Hollow. Brave is deep in a mission, disguised as a gnoll, and reveals her target for the night, Tarek Rolokin, a real piece of work. We also meet Levi, a fellow Null Performer, who may or may not be critical to what happens to Rave by the end of this episode. Notably, a mysterious man with a staring problem shows up, who we now know is Kahn. He's got that riz cause Rave is inexplicably drawn to him and his smoke and stone mask. New cologne idea, anybody? Rave's plan to lure Tark away from the Hungry Hollow works as planned, despite this sexy stranger who seems to have town ruining her plans. We then learn that Rave is no gnoll, rather a supreme badass with a penchant for blood and a sense of humor. Love that. Using clothes of whipping wind power and an iron pen, she disables Tark's elemental powers and tortures him for his atrocious crimes, taking his hand to free the children he uses in his battle pits. Not a great guy, Tark. After dropping him off a cliff, she runs into Mr. Sexy Smoke and Stone. He concurs that Taric was a monster and would not report her and despite her murderous instinct She just can't bring herself to kill him. Imagine having so much Riz that someone decides not to All right, flutter flutter flutter, enter a parchment lark, aka the cutest magical mail system ever invented. Second only to the otters in Crescent City, if you know, you know. Rae heads to the Curly Quill to pick up supplies for Essie, who is definitely not Rae's friend and definitely does not care about her, according to Rae herself. In The Curly Quill, we learn that Rave's an assassin for the rebellious group Fy'ra Du'ath, and also a woman of the people that gives Bloodstone, a. k. a. that cash money, to the people of Undercity that desperately need it to survive. Girl, I'm obsessed with you. She faces off with her superior, Sareem, where they argue the politics of the rebellion, and Rave is ordered to lie low until a notorious bounty hunter for the crown, Rexxaros, leaves town with a sacrificial member of the Fiur du Ath. As feisty as she is, Rave is compelled to obey because Serene is a bloodlace, also a runy, able to cause Rave pain or pleasure at her will. In this section, we learn that Serene found Rave on her deathbed, offering her a spot as an escapism if she gives Serene a drop of her blood to act as invisible shackles. Considering her only other alternative was death, it's pretty messed up. Reflecting on the shitshow of it all, Rave enjoys a quiet moment under the sky, staring at her favorite moon with a wonky little wing. Home sweet home! We learn that Essie is a certified genius, master of runes, and Rave's personal weapon specialist. Developing her a dental body shield made out of spanglepoo. When Essie reveals she's worried about Rave, she basically turns into a prickly porcupine. Next we meet Nhi, the cutest little parchment lark there ever was. Rave is unsure of Nhi's intended destination, knowing only that she found her and enjoys her company, and that I need you is mysteriously written on her. New pub alert! Welcome con, Mr. Sexy Smokin Stone! In his broody boy era, he meets with Kaizari, Princess of the Shade and unfortunate bearer of the Aether Stone. Sidenote, she is also his daughter. She reveals she ran away from her toxic father, Tyroth Vagor, King of the Shade, and oh yeah, she's also in love with goth boy Kaliss. After hearing his song, she wants to set him free. And girl, can we really blame you? We all crush on a broody goth guy with musical talents. At It's once in our life. It's a canon event. Waking from a fiery nightmare, Rae pulls herself together just to fall apart again when she finds Essie brutally murdered in their home. Cue tears. Buckle up, folks. We're only 14 chapters deep and this emotional rollercoaster is just getting started. Not coping in the best way, Rave sets Nifri in a tear jerking show of unhealthy coping mechanisms, and sets out to get revenge on Rek, who killed Essie to lure her out. And we all ask ourselves, why are we crying about a little paper lark we met literally one chapter ago? Another new Poth? Question mark? Yes, we will be talking about this in depth in just a second. The other a being lurking underneath Raeve's skin, prowls the Undercity and slays Rhekk's men in droves with a ferocity and ruthlessness that is equally as awesome as it is terrifying depending on who you ask. Unfortunately, those pesky ironpins disable her, and Rek appears to knock her out, but not before she bites his motherfucking finger off. Legend! Last chapter in the stretch, folks. Rave awakes, reflecting on her inner psychopath. Refusing to reveal information about the fear due off, Rave is then tortured at Rick's hand. I want to say that I don't know anything about the audits from Christmas Eve, so, because I haven't read it yet, but I just want to show you fan art so bad. You say they're cuter than me. Well, have you seen them hotter? They are cute. They are cute. Also, I find it like they wear a little reflective vest. Really? And they just take the, the, the mail. And then literally everyone in the Crescent City, no matter how tough they are, they're just like, Also kind of funny that when Rave woke up the next day after the other was in control, and she feel the flesh from his finger. Do you remember that? Yeah. She didn't know what it was, and then they told her that she bit his finger off, and she was like, Alright, now we're going to dive into our journal entries before we dive into our chapters chat section. Throughout these entries, scattered between chapters, Elowen, aka Rae, takes us through her former life. At the age of nine, she's a little fireball, desiring a dragon, me too. Her parents tell her that she must wait until she is older, cry, solid parenting advice. I would be afraid for any nine year old I know to have a dragon. Her mother is basically being tortured by the Aetherstone, and Element hopes she does not hear any elemental songs, so that she does not have to wear it next. Next. When Hadian leaves to steal the moon, PPO egg Elwin sneaks along with him and after finding an egg, Hadian is paralyzed. The elwin is forced to defend him and the egg until the egg has hatched. In chapter 18, Eleanor mentions that her, Hadean, and the egg are being hunted by a pack of doomquils and she readies to protect them. Okay, side note before we get into the chapter chat. I was, googling a bunch of mythology stuff and I googled doomquils to see if there's any reference of it. And the only thing that came up is a brand called doomquil that sells frozen breast milk flatteners? I'm sorry. What? I didn't realize that the breast milk. Why do you gotta flatten it? You're not just like. I didn't realize it even had to be flattened. I guess we'll find out when we have babies. Yeah. All right y'all now that we are finished with the summary time to head into our chapter chat section where we will discuss this stretch of chapters including theories, foreshadowing, notable moments, and. So first and foremost, we would be remiss not to mention how cool it is that there's actually a glossary and pronunciation guide in this book. Petition for every future fantasy book to include one of these. It was so helpful because of the intricate world building in this book and to just look back on the heat of some scenes when I would just forget what a wheel was or Stuff like that. I just needed a quick refresher, and it was so nice just to be able to hop back to the glossary. So, Sarah, girl, you're a translator. I love it. I'm not sure how common this is, at least in all the fantasy books I've ever read. This is the first time I've ever read one with the glossary, so I hope it's a trend that keeps on going. As far as initial reactions in these early chapters, I just really fell in love with her writing. It was unlike any other style I've seen so far. There were so many just one and two liners that I found myself underlining and like exclamation point Because they had so much impact and a lyrical beauty to them Just loved it. Mackenzie. What did you think of the chapters in the glossary? Well, I'm glad you asked because I love that Miss Zero was so kind to include the glossary I think that it is so easy, especially for me to get lost when reading these complex fantasy books like this one And I probably would not have been able to even comprehend much of the story without having the ability to go back and refresh my knowledge on the magic systems and the world building. And my god, Sarah A. Parker's writing is phenomenal in this book. Nothing like I've ever read before. So beautiful. It was really gorgeous. That's my adjective. It's fucking beautiful. From chapter one, it is evident that Sarah's writing is more complex than most authors. She introduces the story with poetic, lyrical phrases and dialogue, which gives the story a much more compelling and euphoric feel. This pairs especially well with the beauty and uniqueness of the world
she portrays.
Kaina Gillespie:This stretch of chapters contains so many beautiful moments, but we will only discuss a couple examples that stood out the most to us. So our first example, quote, they thought the darkness was their ally, but it was their room, as it is for many who underestimate the shroud of sunless sky. So in this specific scene, the other had just sucked all of the oxygen From the air, sucking the breath from her opponents, and one of the elements needed to keep the flames burning. This left the soldiers in the dark and at a disadvantage since they could not anticipate the other's movements. The darkness was initially what the soldiers had intended to use as a sneak attack and part of the trap for Rave, but it ended up being used against them, and that's beautiful. This can also be interpreted in a more poetic light. Darkness is often used to describe hardships in a person's life, and I think that the Other is a ravenous version of the deepest and darkest parts of Grave herself. A thirst for revenge that wreaks havoc and destruction and brings about ruin. So fun. Our next example is, quote, As I looked at her one final time, wishing she'd grow wings and flutter in the sky so she can ball up and take her place among the moons where I would be able to see her always so I wouldn't have to say goodbye. Crying. In this scene, we know that Rave has found Essie bleeding out on the couch, in which she did die shortly after. Rave scorns herself for not being as open about her feelings and her love for Essie as she should be, in this moment, we also learn that Rave has lost another dear friend to her, and we can really feel her conviction here. We also know that Rave finds comfort in the moons that decorate the sky, and Essie being in the sky where Rave can always look up to her for comfort is much easier to bear than having to say goodbye to her. We see how hard Rave actually loves the people around her and understand why she's hesitant about growing close to others, because the pain of losing them is just far too painful to endure. I find it interesting that she feels this anger towards herself and this guilt for the last conversation she had with Essie, she was, She's, you know, detaching herself and making sure that Essie didn't care too much about her. Yeah. And despite the shame of this and the guilt and the anger she feels towards herself, she actually, she just closes herself off more. Yeah. And it's so interesting to see the dynamic of that, because this is so fresh in the book. Like, her, her deep, deep trauma is just, like, ripped open a hole in it. And then, shortly after, she meets Kahn, and she goes on this adventure, incredible emotional journey and I found myself getting frustrated with her towards the end of the book. Like, can you just let him love you, please? Can you just open your heart? Like, haven't we learned our lesson already? I know, but this kind of reminds me like, she has serious trauma and this just totally reopened that wound. So, give her a little slack. This is our, like, preparation for the books to come when we actually learn about her past. So, uh, we All right. Our last example is, quote, my lungs pull full of his scent so deep and drugging like smelted stone topped with a ladle of cream. I just love this, this image. Like you almost just like hear and smell it through the book. I know in a lot of fantasy books, there's like scents described because a lot of the relationships are very primal. But I just, I just love this. Like, it was so visual and like almost poetic. And I don't know why smelted stone sounds sexy, but I would like to take a big whiff of Kahn. I think that this is also an important transition. So we can see that Kahn is slowly breaking down the thick walls that Rey keeps around her heart, just starting by, the physical reaction she's having to him, and this confusion that he's creating in her head is slowly breaking down those walls. Very slowly. Emphasis on slow. Yeah. Yes, very. This is also how she continues to describe his scent throughout the remainder of the story, that smoke and stone. It's always something she associates with Kahn. On page 12, Rey briefly mentioned Kahn's scent by saying, Quote, that might just be the best smell I've ever inhaled. Very interesting because his scent captured her attention way before she even knew who he was or even really had a real interaction with him. Yes. All right. Now we're done talking about the author's writing style. We're going to get into the foreshadowing and just talk about the massive amount of foreshadowing that is present in these chapters. Dude, so much foreshadowing. So insane. On a reread, I was just shocked by how many nuggets I was picking up and just props to Sarah A. Parker. I ran out of my specific color tabs for foreshadowing by like chapter 15 because it was so much and on my first read I clearly didn't pick any of it up. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that you probably wouldn't, I mean obviously on the first read, but it's a crazy amount of foreshadowing that you wouldn't even imagine. Yeah, I'm also curious to see like how much foreshadowing in the first book there is for like stuff that we don't even know about yet. So it's probably still some stuff in this. It's highly likely. So we're gonna talk about Khan and Rave's relationship and the foreshadowing that Sarah included in these, stretch of chapters. So we're gonna talk about the Hungry Hollow scene from chapter one, when Rave is singing and Khan is stealing all of her attention with his stare. This plays a huge role in Sarah's foreshadowing of their relationship. We weren't really given any, specific details about the exact emotions he was feeling at this moment. However, we can assume that he was telling lots of anger, confusion, sadness, love, and even grief here. We know that Rave was everything and some change to Khan in a past life, so we can only imagine the emotions he is feeling at this moment. Brave has no recollection of Kahn, but in this moment she can feel the remnants of a great love that they once had and she doesn't even know it. Another example from the Hungry Hollow is Rave saying, quote, I came here to lure one monster and ended up snagging two, end quote. Rave thinks this after bumping into Mr. Hot Daddy Mystery Man and becomes aware of the extra set of eyes that's been watching her during her entire performance. This part provokes some serious shields because from first impression, we might assume that Rave is an extra badass and has claimed two victims for the night, which is sort of true, But one, she actually ends up killing it, and the other, she ends up falling hopelessly and utterly in love with it. Yes. Well, basically. After much resistance. So, a lot of the foreshadowing in this stretch regarding their relationship indicates the chemistry is so strong that Rave has physical reactions to seeing Kahn despite her memory loss. And vice versa, Iskahn also has a strong reaction to her presence for obvious reasons. He's literally been putting together moonshards of her deceased dragon for 20 years. That's a good answer. Ah, the romance. After hearing her voice from the Hungry Hollow, quote, a dense, grated sound crumbles out of him like it wrestles him. Loose. She also has a physical response to him in the scene, despite their interaction being limited, but her breath catches upon seeing him and she is strangely drawn to that scent. Next, after brutally slaying a very deserving terror, she has yet another tension filled run-in with mystery sexy man, quote, his condemning stare lands on me again, and it's like a swift kick to the ribs. Winding chest deflating. His stare speaks volumes to her, and the intensity of it has a physical effect as well. When he speaks, quote, his dense voice skims my heart like flint scoured across stone, leaving a residue of sparks that crackle through my icy bloodstream in the strangest way. When she threatens him to keep his distance, quote, he steps back, forging a small cleft of space between us that feels like a canyon I'm standing on the edge of, the arches of my feet tingling as a strange flutter takes flight inside my belly. Despite her wanting to murder him to make sure she gets away with Tark's murder, she is unable to bring herself to do it. While it helps that Khan agreed Tark was a monster and that he really didn't see anything, she later reflects and questions this decision of hers. Being a cut first, don't think later, this is out of character for her and foreshadows their feelings for each other. And I just found it really interesting, on my first read, I, I kind of was, Guessing that maybe they had a past or it was like a mate's thing because Their physical reactions to each other were so strong. Yeah, I didn't think it was just like a oh, he's so attractive He's doing things to me. Yeah, I definitely like took note of con. So this reaction to her like on the stairwell I found it really weird. It's like a little creepy. Yeah, and like when he popped up right after that When he popped up right after that I was like He definitely knows something that we don't, but I didn't really make the connections that maybe they were once lovers or something, but I knew that he, had reasoned to have that reaction towards me. And this aspect of the story, created so much mystery for me and, really pulled me in right away. Cause, after I read the prologue, I was like, I don't understand anything. And I read this first thing and I was like, who is this? Why do they kind of like each other? Alright, so following her encounter with Essie that has stirred up emotions for the both of them, Rave hums a gentle tune, quote, That always clears my mind no matter how loud the world seems. This is really cool and a subtle shout out to her history with Kahn. Despite her memory loss and all that she's gone through, the tune he sang to her when their romance was first developing in the burn within the dragon hutches has stuck with her and helps ground her when life is difficult. And we find her constantly singing this throughout the book. Yeah. Or humming it. It's her comfort song for sure. That's all about the notable foreshadowing for the romance. Now we need to talk about past after hatching. Outside of her traumatic past of losing her entire family and being forced to marry a tyrant instead of her love and her murder, we know that Rave has experienced unspeakable things during her time with the Scavenger King as his quote unquote firelark. While we don't get the details in book one, we know that she was tortured to the point where she now fears fire and refuses to use ignos, which is kind of badass that she can also hear ignos, because now up to this point we know that she hears boulder and, clothes. Just crazy. It is crazy. I was like shocked when we learned that she can wield all four of them. Yeah. our girl is fucking badass. And it's like, what does that mean for her? And how many people can actually wield that many? I mean, even Khan can only wield two. And I think when Eluin, after her family had died, they told her that in order to roll Arithia, she had to marry someone with at least two elemental beads. So I guess two and above is probably the, Like the standard or like the standard or like the basically above standard, really? Yeah, like it really makes you badass if you can at least hear two like you're the shit For real for real vice is giving a real reese moment here because he's like the most powerful hollywood probably our guitar fans Anywho Quote, I close my eyes and plunge into the melody in the same way I once plunged into life, but with the words I've since learned how to speak, armored by the horrors I've encountered since, flaming horrors, mind mincing horrors, end quote. I really like this visualization of like she's armored by the trauma that she's been through. I really like that. And she also uses that as a defense mechanism too. Yeah, she does. That's a big, a big thing too. For sure. Another quote that describes her mentality post Scavenger King is early in the book. Quote, Survival's funny. Some wear it like a whisper, others like a scream. Mine's a scorched skeleton of flame forged rage that keeps me upright, keeps me moving forward. End quote. Both of these snippets reference the flame in a way that really points to her trauma and the rage formed because of it. Yeah, God, I just love female rage. Which is true. Warriors are, like, created out of it. I love it. I could read about it all day. Those are my favorite books. So, consciously, as she has said, Rave is using ignorance as a self preservation tonic to avoid her painful past as Elluin, but also because of balance. While we don't know much about her, she seems like she was really a bright light in a dark time for Rave. After losing her, Rave seals her heart off and refuses to love or be loved again because to her it inevitably leads to pain and loss. She decides against befriending Levy despite her kindness, thinking, quote, back to someone else I once knew. Someone else with an easy smile and warm regard. A female who's now a vaporous memory that doesn't bang against my ribs or heart. Not after I tied all of those heavy, painful parts to a rock, now anchored to the bottom of my icy internal lake. Burying the trauma of loss deep in her mind, we see a visual representation of her unhealthy coping mechanism. My first read, I was like, what are you talking about? There's a lake in her brain? I'm lost. But it's definitely a helpful picture to her trauma and the way she buries it. And it also, we'll see later on that there's a connection to the other within her icy lake. So we can't really blame Rave for doing this. She's been through so much. Clearly, what clearly founds death was a turning point for the worse in her emotional journey. Yeah, I also was very confused about this leak and I was like, why do we keep talking about a weight? Like I was like, is it real But I think it's a really good way, is it in the shape? Right. I feel like it's a really good way of her like expressing like basically her ignoring her feelings and like pushing her feelings to side and not really coping with her feelings. Yeah. Which we could relate to a lot. I really love like just Sarah Parker's visual descriptions, There's so many ones that, connect with the emotional journey of the characters, and then she also, turns it into, a visual description, it's really helpful for me as a reader, and I just think it's a really beautiful way of writing. It is, yeah. Another significant foreshadowing topic is that of Kaisari, aka Rave and Kahn's daughter, who is now a princess, the princess of the shade. Upon seeing Levi stare at her pregnant belly, Rave describes the vision as doing, quote, Something strange to my heart makes me feel like it's going to burst and not in a nice way, end quote. Looking back after completion, we know that Rave is Elwin, who was pregnant with Kaizari prior to her death. Despite her memory loss, she is still struck with a strong wave of emotion upon seeing Levy's care and willingness to put herself in danger to care for her unborn child. Just as Rave was willing to sacrifice her love with Kahn to protect her lover, friends, and baby, Levy's actions struck a chord with her. Oh, that's so sad. I was interested in my reread, like. Hmm. That's interesting. Like, yeah. Was she pregnant before? And then further I got in the book, I was like, So on a much lighter foreshadow, we know there are some elements and cons meeting with Kaisari at the Hungry Hollow that we got to talk about. When she informs him that she has taken the oath of chastity and devoted herself to the creators, he replies, quote, You're my niece. Daughter, but I'm gay. The last thing I want to talk about is your chastity. Boy, oh boy, you really don't want to talk about her chastity. Or the fact that she's fallen in love with Caylus. Yes. In our first glimpse of Kaizari, it is pretty clear that despite not knowing her mother, she has that same fire When talking about her tutor that booked her for not linking her letters, like, actually, what the fuck? So disturbing. Why? She lets that fire show. Quote, not every time I write something with my perfectly linked script, I want to punch him in the throat. Not that I know how to punch, but I like to do it anyway. Quote, this is such a rape thing to say, and something I actually thought about on my first read before knowing their names. Yeah. I was like, Oh, we got another feisty one. And yeah, it's actually her daughter. So of course, yeah, it does. All right. The other aspect of foreshadowing, theory, but like, you're like 99. 9 percent for sure. we need to talk about the other, one of the most pressing mysteries of the entire book. On my first read, my mind was jumping all over the place. I was like, is it rape? Real bad side, a piece of calyx left after the aether stone was removed upon her death. On a reread and after consulting reddit, of course, we have a pretty strong theory about Slothra, Elowen's dragon being the other. Having read the book, we all know that Slothra and Elowen Rave had a very strong bond, and they became a moon together following her death. According to Step Defined on Reddit, Rave likely breathed in Slothra's essence while they were in the moon and or Slothra transferred her life to Rave and a piece of her consciousness still remains. When her rage from Essie's death takes over and the other takes control of Rave's body, it is described as this, quote, something within me shifts and a booming collision jars me from the inside out, my bones locking from the impact. A thunderous crack ricochets from deep beneath my ribs before a sharp explosion pierces through me, shattering my insides into a thousand icy shards. My body temperature plummets so fast, I hear my heart slow. I inhale a shudder of air that feels too warm. I lose sensation in my fingers and toes, my arms and legs. I remember when I was reading the book for the first time, I text you when we got this point of view, and I was like So confused. I was like, is she turning into like a, she like shape shifting? I knew it was her. And they were talking about how Ray was the host. So we knew it was Ray, but we didn't know what exactly was causing or like what exactly the other was. I kind of felt like I correlated it a lot with her anger. Cause I knew she did it for revenge. So I got that. Something within her, like a fire within her, basically. Yeah, for sure. Alright, Code. So funny, I just said fire, now I'm saying code. Code. Let's talk about it. Several pieces of foreshadowing that support this theory are present in this stretch of chapters. After dispensing justice to Tariq, Rae blinds on a sky bridge looking up at the sky. Quote, picturing myself as a dragon, wings outstretched, I tip and turn through the puffy pink clouds so far above the world that all I can hear is my heartbeat and the heavy thump of my imaginary wings. All I feel is the flexing strength of my body, untethered, free, and icy calm settles within me like a nested nest. Feast. We know that moon plumes like a code, which may be why she describes an icy calm sibling in her when imagining herself as a dragon. And so for other scenes, RA describes her breath as icy and her affinity for code supports Sacha being the other. Yeah, I think it's really interesting. I wonder if the other has such an influence on rape that rape can almost remember and feel like. What it feels like to be a dragon because in this scene she's imagining But I wonder how real it feels to her. Do you think that her Fondness of the moons has to do with Slothra's essence Well, we know that Haze Perch She loves it because of Hadean But I don't know that could be I feel like maybe being part dragon like since that's something like of their her Dragon culture that they do upon their death it's probably very revered to them And so it could be a reason why she's just loves them and this girl loves men All right Another element of this other sloth trap foreshadowing is how any language relating to the other is very specific Describing this entity as very monstrous beast like ruthless much like a dragon would be she salivates for the taste of their blood blood on her lips, debates eating burned flesh, and enjoys some finger food. The other quote holds no ill blood over those who kill to survive, to feed, or to protect their young, but those who kill to hurt the one she loves, the one she nests within. Unlike most humans, the other does not carry judgment for murdering to survive, to feed, to protect their young, unless it hurts her. So she clearly has an affection to Rave. This indicates that she can be a dragon, as such a beast would have no issue with killing. Along these same lines, Rave reflects on when Serene found her. The Other was in control when this happened, and Rave was tucked behind an icy veil. Quote, An icy rumble builds in my chest. I remember being pitted with a certainty that whatever I was doing was not okay, but that part of me in control lived by a different set of rules. That in their eyes it was tame. The End. Observing through the other's control, Rafe felt that her actions were morally wrong, but not by a dragon's moral compass. It was tame in Slaughter's eyes. another piece of foreshadowing I forgot to add, but I want to talk about, so when the other is about to attack Rex's men after Essie was murdered, they're, you know, being men, talking about dumb shit. And she's like, I wonder if, people of their species find this attractive because I certainly don't. So her speaking about the humans in that way and there being a different species also could point to her being a dragon. Yeah, that's good. The other's affection for rape also supports the sloucher theory. Rave is described as her precious client host. When Rave awakes after the other took control, she is, quote, immersed in an icy sleep that's soft like a wispy tail bound around my body. Drifting within the tide of nothingness, my consciousness was huddled somewhere far away, end quote. Despite Rave being Horrified at losing control and is clear that Sasha cares for rave and makes sure she's secure while she murders full. Right she's also shocked at the state of her icy lake quote, the usual smooth, frosted experience. Now a litter of ice shards and upturned birds spearing skywork. End quote. I love, love, love this visualization of Sacha, breaking free and taking control of rape chef's. Kiss Sarah Egg Parker. Yeah, I love how it's like a visualization of her brain. But when the other takes control, and when Rave is burying stuff down, and stuff like that, sometimes the other Satcha will follow her under the ice. She'll go pick up stuff she drops, and when she takes control, she bursts through the lake. It's just, I love it. It's beautiful. personally, I love the depth that the other adds to Rave and her story. It was like, such a big mystery to me figuring it out. It really thickens the plot and confused me as much as it make made me obsessed with this book. I love Dragons, as I said, like a hundred times already, and we're only Ona episode one, and my mind was blown thinking that Rave is kind of technically part dragon, despite her not really realizing that yet. I'm excited to see how the other comes into play in future books and how the relationship between her and a fully cognizant slaughter plays out. So I'm curious, once Ray realizes. Who is the other? Are they going to be able to talk to each other? Interact with each other? Will she have more control over when Slothra takes control of her? Oh, so many questions. October 2025. Alright, time to close the book on our foreshadowing section and move into our favorite moments and quotes. This is my favorite part. There are so many, it was so hard to choose, y'all. Yeah. So throughout this stretch of chapters, My favorite moment in the spotlight raves Sassy Nature. She is not afraid to say what's on her mind, and she does not care who's on the receiving end, which is endlessly entertaining for us as readers. among all the gems, my favorite Feisty Assassin moment occurs when she's speaking to Essie about lying low and wrecks Zorro's heart. Quote, the only way we'll clash is if I accidentally run into him on my way to pick up my hand saw and accidentally slit his throat, accidentally going against Sareem's direct orders and accidentally saving the life of one of my comrades. So funny. This had me giggling, like laughing out loud. I didn't realize, How she sent this into the locker, put it in here. And I was like, dang, she's kind of, she's, she's real, like, I love it. And I love that she has a handsaw. That's the one thing like you, I don't know. So another noteworthy gem I wanted to add quote, there's not much that's wet and squishy left in my chest. It's all hard and hostile and pervious to the things like caring for the likes of Tarek Rilakkum. In fact, even if he were a pile of shit on the pavement, I'd still go out of my way to stomp on him. This also had me giggling and reveals just how angry she is and how much she wants to dispense justice on pieces of shit like Rek and Tarek. Yes. So another of my kind of favorite moments, quotes, whatever, whatever. it's really Rave's rage in her character depth that we see within the first 150 pages. we really see how much anger and trauma she holds on to, so early in the book. This really gives her character depth off the bat, and it really hooked me into her character development, and I knew this rage was going to translate into some serious badass rage. So despite this rage that she has, she does still have a desire to help heal the world and leave behind a meaningful legacy at her core. This really makes her relatable and speaks to her character, as rage can often consume wholly and lead down a dark path. So we really see her altruism shine despite what she's been through, by her acts of taking out dangerous criminals in the city on her own dime, scattering money in the undercity, and her desire to quote, Die knowing I left something bright behind in this beautiful world sketched in so many shades of ugly. Our moonbeam, we love you. All right, some of my favorite moments were pretty much any moments that featured Mr. Hot Daddy. Sucker for romance over here. Specifically the whole honky holo scene, there's always something just so poetic about the characters meet cute. between the main female character and her mortal enemy, aka her love interest. We know that Rave was sent to the Hunger Hollow to be the badass that she is and slice up her newest target, Taric Relican. Did I already mention that she was a badass? However, at the beginning of this mission, Rave is stopped by a stranger. A. K. A. Con, A. K. A. Hot Daddy Mystery on the stairwell. Anyway, so she meets this mystery guy and can't shake the feeling that he has had his eyes on her the whole night. Not only did she notice his attention, but she kind of began to enjoy the mystery behind his attention. Quote, but it's the cloaked male that steals my attention. The top half of his face still hitting within the shadow cast by his hood. Despite it, he still reaches through his face and embraces me in an ironclad grip. I can't shake him. In this moment, it can be assumed that RA is starting to lose focus on her newest target because she can't help but notice how prominent and dangerous Mr. Mystery man's presence is. She can't even see his eyes because it's hidden by his cloak, but she can still feel the intensity of his stare and feel the emotions that he's probably even in from it. Wow. Again, I am a sucker from romance, so the mystery of con just kept me on my toes the entire time, and I love just the little snippets that we get of him in this, in the early parts of the book. And I think that the Hungry Hollow scene is important because we get a teaser of the chemistry between Rafe and Kahn. We kind of see the start of an epic love that readers are not aware of, but looking back I found myself appreciating the scene a lot more. I am interested to know what exactly was going on in Kahn's head after seeing Rafe for the first time in A very long time. I want to know what he was thinking. it is interesting that Rave immediately felt a pull towards Khan, which may prove that they were probably true mates for all of our ACOTAR fans out there. And another favorite part of mine, in this stretch of chapters was the chapter with the other. In chapter 15, you get a glimpse of this new point of view. The other has entered to chat, baby. Though I found myself confused as hell while reading this chapter, it quickly became one of my favorite moments within the Spanish chapters. it's proof of just how powerful our girl Rae is. Also, it is revealed that Rae is not a gnoll, and we know that she actually hears Claude and Boulder. Rae's badassery is on full display here, and she takes out almost an entire unit of soap. My last favorite moment of the book was the dedication, and this quickly became my favorite part of the book off, just off rip, and it was, quote, for those who feel small and quiet, spread those wings and roar. I love it. Dedications are always, quote, worthy, and I feel like she wrote that. Yeah, I love the dedication as well. also the art on the page with it. And can we just talk about like how beautiful the chapter art was at the beginning of each chapter, like even on the Kindle, just love it. Oh my gosh. I need to see more fantasy books with art. So that Sarah really put in a lot of effort and time into really creating the aura and just really making sure you feel as included and involved as possible. Definitely love it. All right, peeps, time to move into the myths and magic. What is it, 2011, peeps? Why do I always say peeps? What, peeps? I just feel like we're such like a 2000, 2010 situation. I feel like I say it a lot. Who? Sorry, continue. Our myths and magic portion is where we will dive into the mythology that inspired when the moon hatched, as well as explaining a world building topic. So they will be explaining the creators, their role in the elemental magic system, as well as other magical things such as runes and woods. the first part of our mythology section is the god names and the aether stone. So this is obviously very important to our story, and I was able to find some references on the interwebs of where this might have come from. some of the names of the creators in this book have a directly related meaning in Latin. Ignos, for example, is derived from the Latin word Ignis, which is a powerful gender neutral name that means fire. Rain is a variation of the name Raina, kind of like Kena, which may be Slavic or Spanish in origin. These variants may derive from the Latin word Regina, meaning queen. I don't really know if this was connected to her mindset while naming the creators, but I just found that this was interesting. ca is derived from the Latin word Calum or caly, which means sky or heavens. Interestingly, the word ather is also Latin, meaning the upper pure bright air or heaven. An ancient and medieval science. Ather was also known as the fifth element and a term for substance that was said to fill all space and make up all body. this kind of fits in with Sarah A. Parker's description of Kaelas in the Aetherstone, and I found it really interesting that, I don't know if he's going to connect to like a heaven situation in a way, but I found it very interesting that his name related to heaven so much. Yeah, I feel like it was really cool to learn that Kaelas directly corresponds with the word Aether, especially in terms of the story. So that's cool that she kind of, again, like, Yeah, dude, I'm grasping for straws with Kayla, so I need more. Yes, we need more. We didn't get enough. Alright, now we're going to talk about the iron portion of the story. Pretty quickly we learned that iron pins and Rave's iron ring were to neutralize the elements of magic in the story. world. It is not the first time Iron has worked against magic in a fantasy book and it likely will not be the last. I was curious to research more on this and why Iron is so often used this way in literature and here are some answers. Iron has been known classically as the Medal of Mars, universally perceived as a symbol of human strength, stubbornness, fortitude, honor, tenacity, and confidence in power. I find this symbolic meaning especially interesting since humans have used it in many fantasy books to level the playing field against various magical creatures. Across Western Europe, there exists many old and lingering beliefs about the magical properties of iron and how it can repel, contain, entrap, and even harm the supernatural creatures. Very interesting. I feel like in almost every fantasy book I've read, there's been iron to some degree. And it's always worked to neutralize magic, Or be like the one thing that actually like, they're like one weakness. Yeah, it's very interesting. Despite their like, powers. Yeah. Yeah. So let's hit the character names next. So according to the interwebs, Rave is of French origin and the meaning is disputed, but I did find a few places where it's interpreted as dream or dreamer. So again, I don't know if this was Sarah A. Parker's thinking when she decided on the name Rave, but I do find that interesting. I do feel like despite her trauma and her hostility towards the world in a way, Rave kind of is a dreamer because she does want to make the world a better place. Khan is a masculine name of Turkish origin, meaning ruler, sovereign, or king of kings. Interesting. I'm curious if the trilogy is going to end with Khan and Rey being rulers over all three kingdoms. considering we know that the other Begor brothers are pieces of shit, I would not be opposed to this. I definitely think Khan should be king of kings. Let's get him on that throne. I did also research Elwin's name, kind of found some mixed results, and it may be a Falonese variant of the word Elwin, meaning destiny, again, don't know if that's related, but I did think it was cool and wanted to include it. And any other names I found in the book, I just found mixed answers on, or they didn't really seem to be connected to the character in the book, so that's all I've got for today. Alright, Kenzie is going to tackle our world building topic of the day. we are going to be talking about the creators and the magic system. if you feel like you know all this, feel free to skip ahead to our mini series mix and match section, which is next. The creators are keen to gods are essential to understanding the magic system that Sarah A. Parker has built. Boulder is the god of ground, and con has a strong affinity to him. He built the world that does not spin in the terrain within it. Those that hear his low droning hum are marked by beat. Rain is the goddess of water, Her song is described as, quote, a screaming torrent, the deep gut wrenching well of an avalanche. The near silent cry is sprinkling rain. You have another visitor. Oh, yes, we do. My other cat is here to say hello. I'm surprised he It's been so fake all weekend. Where was I at? I think we finished the quote. Yeah, okay. Those hearing rain have a blue bead. Rave can hear rain, but avoids the connection by keeping her song trapped within her icy lake. Likely because her voice is described as achingly beautiful to the point where it makes you want to cry. If she were to harness this power, she would be able to control the large amount of snow in the shade. I kinda like that. Think it makes sense that rain has ability to make you cry because rain is the only water And that's like a source of water that you have in your body and stuff like that makes sense, but also damn I feel like it's so interesting like the gods are almost described as like having like interrelationships with each other and like a personality I Know Rave describes clode as a crazy spiteful bitch So I'm curious to learn more about them as well And speaking of clothe, we're going to talk about her next. Brave has a strong affinity to her and clothe is the goddess of air and signified by a clear beat. Slightly mad, her mournful song of streaks and whispers in a manic melody. Brave describes clothe as a crazy spiteful bitch. Love that. Next is Ignos, the god of fire. He sings a searing, scolding song and is glutton for the goddess of air. According to Khan, Ignos does not like being small and unimpressive. He craves to grow in singe. Those that hear his song wear red. I think that also Ignos personality corresponds really well with fire, because literally Fire, wants to grow. Face growth. Yeah, and Lily wants to grow and has a desire to get bigger. And I like how it works with Claude, he loves her, and it's all, obviously because, oxygen and air is what makes a fire grow. Right. Lastly, we'll be talking about Caylus, our last and underrated creator, came before all others. Being lonely, he offered up an empty canvas for all the other creators to fill, and life bloomed. He is, of course, trapped within the Aetherstone. Kaizara can hear him sing, and she intends to set him free. His song is described as a baritone, full of substance, yet lacking it entirely. Kaizara's relationship with Caylus leaves me wondering what kind of power elements could harness from Caylus if they could hear him sing and learn his language. The power of making things happen. I don't know. I'm just curious because obviously all of our other creators people are able to harness magic through their songs and learn to speak to them. I don't think Kalis would be any different if he wasn't trapped. I'm curious to see if or how that'll work in future books. I also find it messed up that Kalis offered up his face to the other creators and they trapped him. I just laughed in his face. We're like, but why are you getting that tiara right now? I don't know. now that we have the context of fully understanding the creators, we're going to talk about the magic system because it is tied to them. So those with very sharp hearing are privy to the four elemental songs of Ignos, Rain, Clode, and Boulder. by learning their languages, people are able, sorry, not people, they were able to attain power through them by speaking directly to the creators and learn their language. another piece of this magic system is the runes. So a rune is someone who has learned to wield the symbols of a silver book found in an ancient tomb, rumored to be the writings of Kaelas himself in a desperation to be heard. Identified by the white bead and or white cloaks, they discovered and learned strange runes that could be wielded to heal, charm blood, glamor objects, and more uses we may not even be aware of yet. I also want to learn more about this silver book. who has it? What's in it? Was it Kahless? Gotta know. All right, our last magical element is a wield. it is a small handheld device that is rune to be able to contain different elements in their purest forms for various uses. Fire, water, air, ground, and dragon flame can all be contained within a wield. However, wields can only be created by the blood of a Dagamork, making them rather rare. Con and Ragan are Dagamark, and he uses his wields throughout the story. He's just so powerful. Oh my god. We love you, Con. Time to move on to our mini series mix and match. So excited. we will do this every episode. and Kena and I will do this. Two to three miniseries unique to our podcast. They won't be the same every week. So keep tuning in for all the fun. First up is song association, where we each share a song we pick that relates to a character or characters in this stretch of chapters. Up first, Kayla Darling. Who's Kayla? You've seen Spoole's. I actually do have a friend named Kayla. Alright, so after analyzing a bajillion songs about female rage talk about time well spent, I found the perfect one that encapsulates Rave's mindset during these first 18 chapters. Demons by Henry Werner is a haunting, energetic track with unique electronic sounds and heavy guitars. So give it a listen. The haunting elements of the song describe nightmares and a loss of sanity, but also a warning not to get too close. We know pretty quickly in the story that Rave is plagued by nightmares and has a lot of trauma she likes to bury deep down and ignore, aka demons in her dark headspace that fuel her rage. a quote from the song. The silence gets louder and the nightmares overpower. Seeing shadows losing hours in the voices that are devouring my mind. Through her interactions with Sareem and Tariq, as well as her take no shit attitude towards most people, we know that she is feisty and not to be messed with. Quote, Nobody tell me, not gonna run my mind. Sick of the games this pretty little mouth does by. Running in circles like demons in the night. Come for me. Yeah, I'll ruin the fun. I just love this. it just feels like Rave and exactly how she is. she's sick of the game. She's sick of the politics and wants to just kill the king and be done with it. But unfortunately, that's not how this story's gonna work. While picking my songs for our main characters, I really wanted to choose the songs that I felt corresponded with them on a deeper level. While Canada led it to the ravenous sides of Brave, I wanted to find songs that connected to her in content and turmoil. With me being a sucker for I think that Angel by Vinicius O'Connell is the perfect song to describe the Hungry Hollow scene. Khan immediately recognized Rave and there is no telling what emotions he felt in this moment. Quote, you've been pretending to be human so well, my evenness. End quote. I know that this isn't the exact meaning of the song, but I think that this is the perfect song to connect to the story. I associate this line with chapter one where Rave is disguising herself as a gnoll. She was able to fool everyone, but Khan immediately knew who she was and that she Was no goal. I bought a house to live in, but you're the home I'm missing. I associated this with the heavy grief Kahan had for rave after her passing. He mentioned many times the sense of longing, an ache that was left with him. Nothing was quite the same for him, and he couldn't off their old home and proceeded to sleep in his palace because their home was no longer home without her there. Quote, I never knew I needed you before I found you for the first time. I'm outta step. I'm off my feet. I'm waking up inside a drink. Finneas's lyricism compliments Sarah's writing so well. It really does. I love it. The song I closely associated with raves and turmoil was Nobody's Home by Avril Lavigne. Very close. You are from the 2000s. Even though she's younger than me, y'all. Yeah. Avril's, wait. What year were you born again? 99. You're 2001, aren't you? 3? Eww! Eww. For the eww. Alright, we're gonna talk about this later. Apple's song is about the feeling of being lost and alone and not actually knowing who you are. Which is Which definitely is rave to the T. This is the perfect song for her turmoil because she truly does not know who she is. She also feels like everyone she loves ends up dying which leads her to isolate herself and feel hesitant towards growing close to people. Quote, she wants to go home, but nobody's home. That's where she lies, broken inside. No place to go to dry her eyes. God, where even is Avril Lavigne now? This is totally Avril Lavigne. Where is she now? Alright, time for our next mini series, Guess Their Astrological Sign, where we try to guess the signs of our favorite characters. So, Rave, I thought she was a Leo. I feel like she embodies that fiery, determined nature of the For anyone that has read Throne of Glass, Aelin is a Leo, and I see just There's so many similarities between these two being assassins, clever, sassy, and certified badasses. So very, very similar. Like Ayla in Rave also has that commanding presence as a leader and a resolute confidence to do what's right, making her a perfect Leo, in my opinion. Khan on the other side, his unwavering loyalty, emotional depth, and his protective Scorpio, a water sign. He has a passionate and intense nature, whoo, yeah he does, which fits in with how Khan acts and treats Rave, his stoic nature, and also the depth of his emotional journey throughout this book. Kaizari, though we don't really learn a lot about her throughout the first book, I think she could be a Gemini, possibly? Through her interaction with Khan in the Hungry Hollow, we learn that she is feisty and cunning, just like her mother. Royal princess on one side and hopeless romantic slash royal escapee on the other. She has that duality that aligns with this heir sign. She appears to be quick witted, resourceful, and curious. The first bearer of the Aetherstone that we know of to connect with Kahless and want to learn more about him. This is random, but what do you think Rek's sign could be? Rek? I don't know what's the worst sign. Probably like a I feel like the worst time for me is like a Gemini. Okay, I had a dick because my ex boyfriend was a Scorpio and he was a piece of crap. I was like, I don't want God to be a Scorpio, I know that all of them are bad. Yeah, I have a weird way of running in with Scorpios in the past, I don't know. A lot of Scorpios I know are just like, Nevermind. All right. Sorry, Scorpio. If you're Scorpio, I'm sure you're a great person. All right. I think that Rave is an Ares because Ares are fire signs, Cough Cough, and are hotheads. Rave is a super fierce character who has a taste for revenge. It seems as though sometimes Rave is actually blinded by this revenge, which makes her the perfect Ares. She is fueled by the fire burning in her, which is not a surprise since Ares are fire signs. Ares are known to be the first House of the Silph. And tend to be a little selfish and childish, which we haven't quite gotten a glimpse of these traits just yet during this stretch of chapters, but trust me, they are coming. I think that Khan could actually be a Leo, because when doing a lot of research, a lot of the descriptions include words like kingly or leader, which can be true for Mr. Sexy Smoking Stone. Khan is a literal king, and let's not be fooled by his gentleness array, because he can be pretty fierce. Leo's are awesome fire signs, enter Rigon, who I may love just as much as our main characters, and maybe more. The symbol for Leo is a lion, and I think Kahn has this hard edged personality while also feeling compassionate about the people around him. Kaizari, I think that she could be a Scorpio, because Scorpios are intense and fearless with an unmoving emotional depth. Knowing that she is the daughter of Rape and Kahn makes me believe that she loves like no other. Though we only get a glimpse of Kazari, I think that she may inherit her compassion from Khan, which is evident in the scene at the Hungry Hollow. She does suffer the duty of burying the Aether Stone, but still forms a connection with Kahless, who is trapped inside. Her fierceness definitely comes from Rape. In the same scene, Kazari confesses her plans to set Kalis free and made it very clear that she does not ask for anyone's permission. So, yep, definitely rape. Definitely. Alright, before we close out our episode today, time for our trial by trivia section! So each week, Mackenzie and I will each give each other and our listeners a question. Two trivia questions each. At the end of our When the Moon Hatched coverage, we will tally up who has the most points between hosts. Loser will have to do something embarrassing or funny or I don't know, something crazy. that the winner, or you guys as fans come up with. We would love to hear your feedback, ideas, and participation in this section. Before we know it, all of us will have a PhD in When the Moon Hatched. No doubt. Alright. Kenzie's up first. Also, if you guys want to pause for a second to give yourself time to answer the questions before we answer them, then feel free to do so. Test your knowledge. And if you think you know the answer, please leave a comment of what you think the answer may be. Okay. My first question for Cana is, how many hours did Rave Sing in the Hungry Hollow in chapter one? Motherfucker, I dunno. Really? Canna. Can I? I'll guess. Okay. Three. It was way longer than that, how? It was a lot longer than three I 20. That's not too many. That's a whole day. Okay, well I got it wrong anyways. How many was it? I could have swore you didn't know. I'm pretty sure it was six. I'm just so pissed. Now I feel like my questions are hard enough. Bro, I'm gonna get you with this one. All right, time for my first trivia question. What can be ground up and consumed for its medicinal properties? Consumed? Grown up and consumed. Hmm. Hmm. It's whatever Essie used to make Rave's tooth, right? Or her like Spanglepoo? Is that what she used for the tooth? Yeah. So is it Spanglepoo? No! What is it? Dragonbloodstone? It's the currency they use. But if you grind it up and consume it. Yeah, it was like a throwaway line. I was thinking, yeah, I was thinking the same way as he was making her little tooth cap or whatever, like they keep it down on or something. Educated guess. All right. Sure. My next question, which is probably really hard. Which hatching ground did Hadean go to to retrieve his dragon egg? Netherin. Dammit. Yeah. Point for me! Dang. Alright. What is an assassin for the Fyrdua title? Uh. Uh. What's that on the little, like, um, the little paper they had hung up about the assassins? Possibly. I don't know. Oh, what's her job title, bro? I don't know her job title. Okay. It's an elding blade. Yeah, whatever. I would have never got that. I thought that was the easier one. I'm not a very like paying attention to detail. I just know she was an assassin. Ooh, girl. You're gonna do something embarrassing. Not shit. I still got three more episodes to go. Zero. Okay, but actually how many words was she singing? I'm pretty sure it was six. Seven! Oh my god! Girl, how do you not lose your voice? It's impressive. All right, we're done with our trial by trivia, and that is a wrap on our first episode, folks.
