MICHAEL BYRNE: A Life Of Service
I first met Michael Byrne in the months after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Many parts of the New York area were still reeling from the hurricane. Byrne was overseeing FEMA’s response to the hurricane and he was serving the city where he was born and bred, just as he did after 9/11 working for the Department of Homeland Security, just as he had working for the city’s Office of Emergency Management, just as he had as an FDNY firefighter, much like the uncles he watched as a young kid.
He learned the lessons of a life of service early and he’s never forgotten them.
