Hi everyone, I'm Stan Mallow, welcome toParanormal YakkerWhen one thinks about Nashville, butclearly comes to mindbesides it being the capital ofTennessee, is that it is the epicenter,the heart & soul ofcountry & western music& rightly deserves the title of beingcalled Music City.However, there is another side ofNashville, an eerieghostly supernatural one.My guest today, Mark, a paranormalinvestigator &historian, will tell us about it.He's definitely qualified to do so, what withhim being the owner of Go Nashville Tours& a tour guide as well.Mark, welcome to Paranormal Yakker.Alright, Stan, thanks forhaving me, I appreciate it.Your Nashville Ghost Hunt, Music City'sParanormal Investigation Tour, exploresthe city's most haunted locations& those on it can, with the help ofyour expert guides & top matchequipment, immersethemselves in a real ghost hunt.Which haunted sites, Mark, are visited onthis tour & whatequipment is utilized?We spend a lot of time at the statecapitol. Interesting story, it's probablythe most haunted location in Nashville.A lot of it has to do with the history ofthat capitol. It sits atop a hill &I always describe it likea pimple on your face.Like your face is round & then all of asudden there's just pop up & it doesn'tlook like it belongs there.The reason why the state capitol was puton that hill was because it was so tallto the city, they wanted this building tobe able to be the onlything you see for miles around.Some said 10 mile radius that you couldsee the state capitol when it was finallybuilt. Andrew Jackson had a lot to dowith that, even though he wasn't alivewhen it was completed.He said & he made a point to say, we'reputting the capitol on this hill & thiswill be a strategic place.Now they didn't realize we were going tobuild a huge building with a Batmanlittle sculptor on top that we have thatwe're known for here because now youcan't see it from very many places.But at the time it was one of the mostsignificant & if not the tallest stateCapitols in the entire country.So we built it & then we built it onthis mound. So what is this mound? Well,we come to find out that ancient NativeAmerican civilization's known as the MoundBuilders or the Mississippians inhabitedthis land & I'm talking about athousand to 2 thousand years ago.& they inhabited this land. There wasprobably I've heard numbers that it was a bigger civilization than Paris orRome at the time. So you can imagine somaybe 300,000 natives here.Then they vanished. They disappeared.Where did they go? Some saya plague wiped them all out.Others say it was some suicidal masssuicide type ritual to bury each othertogether. Well, we found many of theirmounds in Nashville & one in particularis at the state capitol.So that's why they built the mounds. Infact, they believed kind of like ancientEgyptians. They believed that if you livewith your dead or you bury yourself withbelongings, your family, that they willbe with you in the afterlife.& that is exactly what they did asMound Builders. & these mounds that areall over Tennessee, but mainly in themiddle of Tennessee at the state capitol,it is an ancient mound. Now, will anyonein the state capitoladmit today? No, they won't.But when they found that out back in the1840s, you got to remember AndrewJackson's most triumphant, ironically,administrative dutywas the Trail of Tears.So, mass genocide & moving the nativesout of this part of the country into landin Oklahoma was one of his greatestachievements, for lack of a better term.& so they didn't care when they werebuilding this at the time.They were also using slaves to build thestate capitol as well as prisoners. Moraldecency at the time was a little skewed,but that's a tarnished part of Tennesseehistory & Americanhistory. They didn't care.& we know for a fact that there arebodies under there that they were found.We've had archaeologists tell us thatbooks have been written. In fact, thereis a book I found that was kind of like ahandbook to guide to the centennial partyof Nashville, which was at the 1896.It was literally written in 1896 as aguidebook for you visiting Nashville &all the things you could do in the firstpage on that is about how it's built on aNative American burial ground.Visit the capitol & it's built there.So it was in record in history books,even though no historian in Nashvillewill tell you about it. So that is themost haunted location inNashville, if not Tennessee.The capitol is built at a limestone. Thewater surrounds it from the north to theeast. & then the craziest part of all,it's not just a statecapitol. It's a mausoleum.The architect William Strickland isburied beneath the walls in the statecapitol, as well as his rival in life,the man who was in chargeof the money, Samuel Morgan.& then we are the only capitol in theentire United States that has a formerpresident buried on the grounds with hisbeloved wife, Sarah.So that's James K Polk.So you're basically in a big cemetery &a part of government history.On those tours there, you mentioned aboutbringing along equipment to people thatwould have access to equipment. What typeof equipment do you bring?Yeah, so we love an Ovulus. What tellsus words will come in through. Well, it'slike a radio transmitter where words areactually saying so we askquestions & the words come up.Rempods, we plant them all over thecapitol so they'll leap if any energycomes in its vicinity. That really tendsto freak people out tremendously.We're also using spirit boxes & we'vegotten a lot of information. We've got alot of communication. Things that wealways talked about were haunting there,but things we didn't know.We've made contact with a little girlwhose name is Emma & we didn't knowanything about children haunting thelocation. & then we come to find outthat there was a curse.We believe it's a curse that in the1870s, when they finally opened thecapitol up for business after the CivilWar, they were having parties. They werebringing children to these parties &the children would get up on the cupola'sarea & they'd actually fall.Because there was no electricity. It wasall dark & they would never see it &they'd fall off the ledge. To myknowledge, I've seen newspaper articlesdating back to that time of 5 childrenwho have fallen from there.Recently, we've seen pictures of childrennow surrounding the grounds of the statecapitol. So we're kind of putting thepuzzle pieces all together. So the spiritbox has been phenomenalin helping us do that.It's great. Could you share some of theparanormal experiences told to you bythose who took part inyour National Ghost Hunt tour?You'll be surprised. I wouldn't besurprised, but to learn that people dohave spirits with them, always with them.So the guests are usually surprised whensomebody communicates tothem that was passed away.We've had very emotional experienceswhere the spirit box has come through &we've asked questions. We've madecommunication through many devices &they've had questions for their lovedones that have deceased.They use what we have dowsing rods forthem to use. Sometimes we'll say, Toucha shoulder with a dowsing rod. Sothey'll move & they're holding them.These people have never had anyexperience using these things.They have no reason to move the rods ontheir own. Nothing. I've watched with myown eyes these dowsing rods just come &touch their shoulder. We like to saythat's like they'rehugging you. They're here.We've had paranormal experience on ghosthunts where just spirits that areattached to humans, but for most partthey've all been good. So we haven't seenany bad spirits so far.A lot of the paranormal experiences thatwe've had when we discovered Emma, shealways talked about a grandma that iswatching over us on the grounds. Well, webelieve that to be Sarah Polk, who wehave photo evidence of her on thegrounds, walking the grounds.We have communicated with her in thespirit box that her story is extremelyunique in that James K Polk, apresident, he was our 11th president, butnot many people know too much about him.That's because he died literally3 months after his president's reign ended& he was only a president for4 years. Now in that 4 years, he waspart of the annexation of Texas,California, Oregon, & Washington, aswell as all the Southwest.So he was a very important president inour history, but then he passed away. Hedied on the train ride back from DC ofcholera. So Sarah, who at the time, shedidn't spend any time in DC.It was a little too far for her & shewanted, she was making the house readyfor her. They didn't have children. Soshe was ready to spend the rest of herlife with her husband & have children.& she did none of this when he died. Soshe lived her entire life in mourning. Soshe lived her entire life in mourningwhere she wore black, literally for thenext 40 years of herlife every single day.& she was very, very upset & kind ofa recluse. Everybody calledher a recluse in writings.So she was buried with her husband on thegrounds of their house, which was acrossthe street from the state Capitol calledPolk Way. But because they had nochildren, they tore the house down.Nashville took over the property.Now, there was really an article thatsaid they almost threw the bodies intothe river & gave them a send off.Somebody said, no, youcan't do that to the president.So they moved their tomb over to thestate Capitol, which is how they tend tobe at the Capitol. We think thatdisturbance during her deceased bodybeing moved from the place she finallywanted to be with her husband over to thestate Capitol, a land known for beingextremely haunted already,filled with paranormal energy. She comesout of her grave & she might be nowwatching over the children that perishedfrom the grounds of the Capitol.& we've got communication through thespirit boxes & dowsing rods & that dosay that that could be a possibility.In Nashville's Dark Secrets, Murder &True Crime Ghost Tour the city's mostnotorious murder cases & true primemysteries are explored. Can you Mark tellme about a few of them?So at the Hermitage Hotel, which isprobably 2 blocks away from the stateCapitol built in 1910, they've alwaystalked about a paranormal experience thatgoes on, whether it be in the boiler roomon the elevator or on the ninth floor.A lady in blue has been spotted. So myteam, we have an excellent team. I haveone of my best paranormal investigatorsis Angie & she does so much research.I mean, she will not tell you a storyunless she know it to be true.& along with her, we kind of uncoveredthis whole kind of I like to call it theDateline story of the 1930s. That'ssomething you would see on Datelinebecause there was this love triangle.But we had money & power of Nashville'selite. & we had this guy that just gotcaught in the wrong place at the wrongtime in the middle ofit. There was this woman.& so what we come to find out is for2 years, a woman by the name ofJenny Schall-Bracker Frank lives on the ninthfloor in room 910. Now that's really theroom that we get themost disturbance from.& on August 25, 1930, she actuallycommits suicide, at least that's what thenewspaper says & herdeath certificate says.Upon further research, we find out thaton August 25, 1930, another man dies of acerebral hemorrhage. & the mostinteresting part of the whole thing isthey both died within 45 minutes of eachother inside the Hermitage Hotel.& the death certificate does not denythose. Now, I think the only thing thatwe can say is a little weird of that,obviously, is that 2 people died within45 minutes of eachother in the same place.I don't believe in coincidences. I neverhave. You can't believe in coincidences,especially when it comes to murder, truecrime & paranormal. That is too much ofa coincidence for me.So there's no way they wouldn't haveknown each other. They were both Jewish.The temple was literally a block away.There's no way in the world they wouldn'thave seen each other at temple.& the most intriguing part is why wasJenny living there? She was married tothe third generation lumber baron ofNashville named Lou Frank & the Franks.& they were one of the most powerfulfamilies in Nashville.So why was Jenny there? Well, Lou wasshacking up with another woman & havinga child with that woman. So Lou put herup in the fancy 5-star hotel, theHermitage Hotel, while he's living intheir home with anotherwoman & their new baby.So this is sounding like Dateline,I think. & somewhere along the line, awoman commits suicide & a guy dies ofcerebral hemorrhage on thesame place at the same time.We obviously have no proof that a murdercould have occurred, but certainly money& power do cover up murders. & itdoes appear that both were probablymurdered & then the death certificatesmight have been doctored.It's interesting, when a woman commitssuicide, you don't usually write up thatin the newspaper. But it was in thenewspaper that she committed suicide. &it said straight up, the reason why isbecause she was devastated by beingestranged from her husbandwho we come to find out that she had beenliving away from him for 2 years.There's just too many pieces of thepuzzle. But that kind of explains whothat is. That's haunting that location.There was a man & a woman seen dancingin a ballroom. Well, there you go.There's romance. & then you have awoman, lady in blue. We know that herfavorite color was blue & she wasburied in blue. So there you go.So we have all these little pieces alladded together. & I think Jenny justwants to tell her story because she diedunder horrible circumstances.Murder on Music Row, Nashville's truecrime tour, explores the sinister side ofNashville on a walking tour that delvesinto the city's most infamous primestories & shocking events that shapeNashville's dark history are revealed.Could you Mark reveal anyof that dark history?We started that tour for more modern truecrime stories because as you know, Imean, true crime is just as popular asghost hunting right now. While we don'tdo any paranormal on that tour, we dotalk about some illustrious murders thathave happened recently.One of which we uncovered was a serialkiller. Again, it's weird. I don't know.& I don't want to speculate. I know alot of great. I think our policedepartment here inNashville is fantastic.But there are a lot of stories that getkind of buried very quickly here inNashville upon reading all the researchthat I have. So for instance, if I wereto tell you Nashville's had a serialkiller, you'd be like,well, I haven't heard that.Because I just think Nashville does areally good job of keeping things underwraps. But we did have a serial killerbecause all you got todo is kill more than one.& there's a man back in the early 90sthat killed at least 3 that we knewof, including a man & woman who justliterally got married, drove their truckto Nashville, which everybody was doingfrom Texas to becomethe next Garth Brooks.& '89 when he explodes, that's reallywhere Nashville had its secondRenaissance of music. & here come these2 young couple & they stay in theshady hotel on the south side ofNashville, but they don't even go to thehotel, they immediately go to a famousbar known for open mic sessions on aMonday night, right on Broadway.& of course, that's where our killer isthere to see & of course he's very,very attracted to her. & he plays thewhole I'm a music producer. Is that yourman? He's got so much talent. I'd love tocome down to your hotel, do all thethings next thing you know, she's foundbeaten & raped & murdered & he'sfound beaten murdered inthe bathtub the next day.& the police have been after this manthough, for at least 2 years because heset fire. He was a wealthy man. He had,he was a computer repairman. So in 1994,a computer repairman isvery few & far between.So he had a lot of money, but he had agambling problem & they had pokermachines in Nashville at bars & he owedthis bar owner over in Hermitage, like$100,000. So he instead put 2 bulletsin his head & thentried to burn down the bar.But of course he left the bar didn't burndown enough & he left enough evidencefor them to be able to track the gun tohim, but they couldn't get him in jail.& that's when he wenton his killing rampage.They do finally get him & he ends upkilling himself in prison. So there wasno trial, but it was one of thosehorrible tales of murder on music rowwhere these 2 musicians literally justbright eyed & bushy tail come right,get out of car, try to become a star &then boom, they'remurdered by a serial killer.& then we have what many believe is themurder on music row where a young man whogot out of college & he wanted to be asongwriter, he immediately gets a job asa chart writer for amagazine called Music Box.& he's basically doing the countrycharts. & this is before we havebillboard music. This is in 1989. Now,billboard charts are around, but we don'thave radio play counting it by otherentities. & he took a pencil. He waskind of a savant & he would literallycall radio stations.& while he was doing that & findingout he saw things that were kind of weird& he realized there's a huge payolascheme going on by the owner of themagazine company putting out the charts.Basically, he was going to artists,making them pay him hundreds of thousandsof dollars to start their careers.& he would record them, get them shot,get them in places, get them on theradio, but he was actually paying to putthem on the radio, which is illegal. Itwas a big scam. & it was uncovered bythis kid. & when he told his friend whowas in on it, he was assassinatedliterally on music row infront of one of those out artists.& I'm talking Shot in the Head twice bya killer. So we've had pretty crazyhistory of true crime in Nashville.Everybody just thinks it's bright lights& neon lights & drinking. & we'vehad really interesting stories. So wetell these stories & we take you totheir locations on the tour.On Nashville's Lost Spirits Murder &True Crime, Haunted Pub Crawlparticipants can experience Nashville'shaunted side & learn about ghostlyencounters that have been reported at thecity's most eerie bars. You justmentioned one of them. What, Mark, canyou tell me aboutthese ghostly encounters?One of the most famous haunted bars isobviously one of the most famous bars inNashville, & that's Tootsies. Tootsieshas been around since 1960. It is off thealley between the Ryman. Literally, youcould get off backstage at the RymanAuditorium, which is where the Grand OleOpry was during the 1960s.& you could literally walk right intothe back door of Tootsies. There was noalcohol allowed in the Ryman. That was ahouse of God. There was no airconditioning. & of course, the greenrooms were super small. I mean, thisplace was built in 1891. It was built tobe a church. It wasn'tbuilt to be an auditorium.Obviously, country stars, they need someliquid courage going on stage. & sureenough, they go right off the backstage& they go right in to Tootsies. &there was beer on tap there & ajukebox. & you could hear on the radio,though, at Tootsieswhen you were to go on.They're like, ah, & so one of the morefamous people that used to frequent wasHank Williams, Sr. He'd hear on theradio, they'd call him up & they'd go,Hank, they're calling you. He'd be like,ah, something's gonna come get me. &he'd just be pounding them away. I mean,he was a notoriousdrinker. It's what ended his life.But after 3 times missing his call togo up, he was told that he could nolonger be a part of the Grand Ole Opry.& so this is Hank Williams, Sr. We'retalking about & this is one of thegreatest country musicwriters, singers of all time.& his life was cut short at 29 yearsold. But even before he was 30, he hadwritten 50 number one hits, probably oneof the greatest of all time. Being toldhe can't be a part of the Grand Ole Opryanymore. He was devastated. Obviously, henever could get clean.Mainly because he was addicted tomorphine because he had a degenerative backproblem. & then of course, he justchased it with beer. & that's whatkilled him. He OD'd in the back of aCadillac on his way to a concert that healmost missed. Well, he missed the plane.So they had to drive him there. So hedidn't miss the show.Many people say they hear Hank in theback of the Ryman. They see him walkingin the alley & they see him on stageplaying. There have been many people thathave told me that they've been cleaningup at night & Hank Williams will justkind of start playing.& then you're like, well, there's nomusic anywhere. & then you kind of justhear Hank Williams playing music. &then I've also had someone tell me theywere cleaning up one night. & there wasa girl sitting on the stage at Tootsie's.& he swore up & down it was PatsyCline who died in a plane crash too. Somany horrific deaths happened aroundcountry music of people who were in theGrand Ole Opry at that time. & there'skind of a connectionbetween that alley & Tootsie's.There's even footprints in the back ofthe alley of Hank's boots still there. Sothat's one of the more haunted bars herein Nashville that we take you to.When one goes on your Nashville SpeakeasySecrets, Murder & True Crime Bar Crawl,they step into Nashville's hiddenspeakeasies & uncover chilling tales ofmurder & mayhem fromthe Prohibition era.What, Mark, was life like in Nashvilleduring that time period?That's a great question because that'sanother story that most people don'tknow. & the one story I get, you'recrazy, Mark. There's no way that's a truestory. Even though I'll tell you crazyghost tales all day long, I get this.Tennessee was the first state to passProhibition. It happened in 1909. That'sstatewide Prohibition. There were alwayscountywide prohibitions, but never astatewide prohibition. Obviously, the18th Amendment was passed in 1919.With the Prohibition being passed 10years prior, Tennessee had to find otherways of drinking because many people inTennessee will tell you, we're thebirthplace of whiskey,okay? Not that Kentucky stuff.Listen, we can make bourbon here inTennessee, too. There's no reason why.Just FYI. Anyways, we're the birthplaceof American whiskey, so naturally peopleneeded to get their stuff.& there's an old alley right off wherethe gentleman's quarter was calledPrinter's Alley, which was known forprinting in the largest printing press inthe entire nation becausethey printed Bibles there.The Gideon Bibles that the ones you findin the hotels & hospitals that are justgiven to you for free were all printed onPrinter's Alley along with2 newspapers & other things.So it was a big, big operation going on,but it was also an excellent place tohide bars. Some of the hotels were inbrothels & bars that backed into thealley actually just closed down theirfront & opened up their back doors.In fact, one of them in the Dream Hotelstill has the stairwell from that erathat they used to the alley still there,so we take you to that.& then we tell you about all thestories that went on during that time,including the story of Skull Shulman, who wasknown as the mayor of Printer's Alley.He was known as the mayor because in theheyday he was the one that brought allthe neon lights really to Nashvillebecause Printer's Alley, once theprinting went away & all thespeakeasies kind of opened up in the1950s, were still under some type ofprohibition, where you couldn't actuallybuy spirit by the drink, liquor by thedrink in any location or bottle.& so these places were operatingillegally in Printer's Alley & theywere all owned by Skull Schulman. Eventually,Skull lost his life when he was 80 yearsold & he was horrifically murdered in1998 by 2 degenerates that were robbinghim knowing that he had all cash.I mean, he was a known gambler. He was aknown bootlegger. He carried cash on himat all times, whether it was in hisoveralls or in his safe.& so, I mean, they knew that if theybroke into that bank, even though it wasa bar & strip club, they could go intothe bank & get some cash.Unfortunately, Skull was tougher thanthey thought. & even though he was 80,he was 6 ft 4, he fought them &they ended up taking him out by cuttinghis throat 6 times.It was a brutal homicide.He was friends with everyone on countrymusic. Willie Nelson actually went onAmerica's Most Wanted to find theirkillers, which theydid, but it took 2 years.But he was the original bootlegger, theoriginal Speak Easy master, the man ofNashville. & the newspaper gave him themoniker, mayor of Printer's Alley.We're not in New York or Chicago, but wedefinitely had prohibition because wewere still making whiskey in Tennessee.We were still shipping it out.Al Capone came through many times on hisway to Florida. So we know there was somesort of connection there. Every city inAmerica claims Al Capone was in theircity, but we do know that he was at leastin Nashville because you can drive rightfrom Hamilton, Ontario down throughChicago & right to Nashville.So, you know, we can do all sorts ofthings. So we're pretty sure he was here.So we definitely have lots of true crimemurder stories that go with ourprohibition era. & the Speakeasies arestill standing. So we can take you tothose old Speakeasies that were thereduring the era today.So that's kind of what entices people totake that tour. It become, we started in July.Its become our most populartour next to our ghost tours.It has been my experience in interviewsI've had with other ghost tour operatorsthat theaters tend to be the most hauntedbuilding in the city.What with showbiz folk that wanting toascend when they vacate their physicalbodies, but prefer instead to remain at thehaunts on the earthplane, they loved when alive.Yeah, we think that's reciprocalhaunting. We believe that they are justreliving their days. For instance, Skull,I always say he literally had a quote inthe newspaper in the 1980s that said hewould die in that building.& he also believed in ghosts because inthe same building, the man that ran thebrothel that was in the front, hisbuilding entered in the alley. But thebuilding was built in 1890s. & the manwho ran in the front, who was kind of theSkull of the era by the name ofIke Johnson, he shothimself when prohibition hit.So he haunts that building, & he wouldtalk to Skull & Skull always believedhe'd go out like Ike someday & he woulddie in that building. So I just there'ssomething about that building.There's a very fine dining restaurantwhere Ike shot himself now calledSinatra's & Skull's Rainbow Room isstill there in the back in the alley. Soobviously both those buildings have hadtheir fair share ofparanormal experiences.& remember, it was a brothel. Sobrothels always tend to have some sort ofparanormal experience. & Ike was kindof a killer. I mean, he was the law ofhis place, which was known as theSouthern turf. & if you were caughtcheating, or he'd take an ice pick toyou, throw you out. If you got caughtcoming back in, he'd just shoot you.So much went on in that building. It'sstill that's another building madeentirely of limestone. I would say it'sSkull's personal heaven. He used to callit the Rainbow Room.Because he believed when you entered theRainbow Room, you were going in toanother world like the Wizard of Oz,which was very popular in 1948 when theyopened the Rainbow Room.So that was kind of the whole point ofthat whole name. So I believe that hedoes he didn't want to go anywhere. Hejust wanted to stay there. & we knowhe's still there. People have seen him.We take EMF readers tothe spot where he's passed.That was his favorite spot. There'spictures of him sitting in that spot.That was actually where he fought. That'swhere he was found when his neck was cut.We take it. Nothing spikes more than inthat whole building than right there inthat location.
