Hi everyone, I'm Stan Mallow. Welcome toParanormal Yakker.My guest today is Genevievefrom Jersey Shore Ghost Tours.While the Jersey Shore is known for itswhite beaches & being the set fornumerous TV shows & movies,it does have a spooky ghostly side whichyou'll be learning about from my guest.Genevieve, welcome toParanormal Yakker.Thank you.Thank you so much for having me.Your Red Bank Ghost Tour meets in frontof New Jersey's most haunted restaurant,that being the Dublin House, home of themost well-known Ghost of Red Bank.What Genevieve can you tell me about thehistory of Dublin House,the ghost who haunts it,& in what ways has itmade its presence known?So that's a very big question, & areally interesting question, I think,& a nice place to start because theDublin House is probably one of the mosthaunted restaurants in New Jersey,for a variety of reasons. It has anextensive history. It wasoriginally built in 1839.The first location where it was built on,is actually moved across the river,moved to a different location withinRed Bank, & then moved 2 more timesbefore it settled in its finalresting place. So somebody cared aboutthat house so much that when they moved,they picked that houseup & took it with them.So it has a very long extensive historyof being a privateresidence. It's been a restaurant.It's been several different shops &office spaces, & most recently it ishome to the Dublin House,which is an Irish pub, & it's afantastic place to go eatif you're ever in Red Bank,but they don't pay me to say that, but itis also quite haunted, mostly by theghost of a woman that theybelieve is Mrs Patterson,& she's probably one of the last peopleto have lived in thehouse when it was a residence.Mrs Patterson is quite active in thehome, or I should say thepub, it's no longer a home,but she does make it known that she likesher space to be nice & tidy & clean,& one of the most interestingexperiences I think that people have hadwith Mrs Patterson happens to bein the ladies restroom on the first floorof the pub. Many years agoI was doing a ghost tour foran author. She was writing a story aboutthe ghost tour & also having dinner atthe haunted location,& it was supposed to be this nicelittle piece about our tour, & thearticle ended up being mostly abouther experience in the ladies room at theDublin House. So she hadentered the ladies room & sheheard a woman complaining about how messyeverything was in there, howthese kids don't take care ofanything, & there's stuff all over thefloor, & the woman said toher, You wouldn't do that,would you, dearie? & she turned torespond to this woman, &she found herself completelyalone in the restroom. I think thatMrs Patterson really likes herhouse to be maintained well.One of the owners of the pub also sharedwith me that she likesto organize his desk.She likes to tuck his chair in nice &neat underneath his desk,little things like that.She's an interesting character, I think.The Count BasieTheatre, listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places in America,is named after the jazz iconconsidered one of the greatestband leaders of all time who was born inRed Bank. The theater that'sbuilt in the 1920s is said to behaunted. What ghostly encounters havebeen reported there? Oh, so many. A lotof times what happens onmy tours is that people who've actuallyhad the direct experiencesjoin me on the tour, so theyget to elaborate a little bit more on myoriginal stories. & that's happenedquite a few times withThe Count Basie. So our original storyhad to do with renovationsthat had been done at the theater& how people were experiencing strangethings afterwards, powerfluctuations throughout thetheater, spaces that they had renovated,updated the electrical work.There should not be theseissues going on there. I was telling thatstory on one of my tours,& there was a gentleman onthe tour who shared with me that heworked for one of those stores that soldlike the power tools.& repeatedly he had these guys comingin, these contractors comingin, saying that their powertools went completely dead.So week after week he's exchangingthese tools, giving them newbatteries. Finally he's like, All right,either they're scamming meor something's going on.So he asked them all where they had beenworking, & they were working atThe Count Basie theater.So oftentimes with paranormal activity,batteries get drained, electricalfrequencies get messed up,so they think that may be attributed tothe activity at the Count Basie.But I've had a lotof other stories about that buildingitself, where people have seen a lady inwhite in the mezzanine,they've seen the ghost of an usherstanding by one of the exit doors,they've actually seenspirits on stage while people wereperforming. So I don't knowwhat it is about theaters, butthey seem to be paranormally active.Absolutely. I've intervieweda number of people who conductghost tours literally throughout theworld, & it seems thetheaters are invariably the mosthaunted place there. I guess people inshow business, they don'twant to leave. They like it.Riverside Gardens Park on theNavesync River is included inyour ghost tour of Red Bank.What paranormal or supernatural activityhas been attributed to the park?There's a lot there. Therehave been quite a few people who haveunfortunately died while swimming in theNavesync. The Navesyncis a bit of a tricky area to go swimming.The tides affect the river,& you're never quite sureexactly where that current is going to go.In the wintertime,people do ice sail on the river,& they've been doing that for over acentury. Oftentimes peoplewill share with me that theyhave seen faces in the ice. So that couldbe some of the ghosts that tend tolinger, or it could justbe, you know, we like to see faces instrange patterns. But themost, I think, interesting& profound spirit that people have seenis a ghost ship that sailsup the Navesync. & it'sbelieved to be the ship of a man namedCaptain James Cooper, whoowned a ship called the Ladies Delight in the 1700s. So he was executedduring the time of theRevolutionary War, & it's believedthat he still sails up the Navesync, &he's still tipping his hatto the ladies along the shore.I think that's great. Privateresidential spaces in Red Bank areexplored on the tour.Could you, Genevieve, mention a few of them?So we don't have as manyresidential spaces on ourRed Bank Tour as we do on our Keyport Tour,but there's been a few, again, I get alot of stories as I'mdoing the tours. People that generallycome on the tour areinterested in sharing their ownexperiences. So I do often get peoplesharing things like, you know,I grew up over here onMechanics Street, & I had thisexperience. & the new owners seem toalso have that experienceas well. So there seems to be a lot ofthat activity. Red Bankitself is a very old town.There's a lot of very historic, beautifulhomes in Red Bank. I thinkit may have something to dowith that. Personally, I believe wherethere are these stories,that history component of itis so important because it helps to kindof give that story thecontext that it might need.In your Keyport Ghost Tour, you takeparticipants on it alongKeyport's waterfront promenade,which has long had a reputation for beinghome to the ghosts ofpirates & rum runners.What Genevieve, can you tell me about theghosts who reside there?I think, you know, people alwaysask me, what's your favorite tour to do,Keyport or Red Bank? & it's a reallyhard question becauseit's like asking who your favorite childis. But there's so muchabout Keyport that is so near &dear to my heart. & I think that it'sprobably because that'swhere we first started,Jersey Shore Ghost Tours was in Keyport,but the waterfront itself isjust a spectacular area.It's constantly populated. There's peoplethere all the time, eitherfishing or sitting by thewater. Even it's cold out today, butthere's still peoplewalking down there. So there's alot of people around to see theparanormal activity that's happening.Some reports that we've gotten,we've had people see what looks likesailors from a different time period.We've had individualssee actual sea captains. Some have seenpirates, which I'll get intoin a moment, & ghost ships.Ghost ships are quite often seen down bythe water. I'm not quitesure if it's the actual history& some of the tragic & untimelydeaths that people haveexperienced in that area,or if it's just the water itselfthat attracts some paranormalenergy. I'm not quite sure.I have lots of thoughts on that, but I'llkeep you here all night ifI start talking about that.But in particular, we had one of the mostbloody acts of piracythat was ever found,was found on its way to theKeyport Harbor. The bodies of those poorindividuals are still in theKeyport Bay. We believe that some of thespirits that people see arethem actually walking alongthe waterfront.The patriotic themedOld Glory Restaurant inKeyport, which was a church,& its cellar, for what I was reading, isreputed to be haunted.Could you, Genevieve, relate to some ofthe paranormal activity that has beenreported to have taken place there?Yes, Old Glory is actually,I say they're all my favorite stories,but Old Glory has anotherspecial place in my heart, too,because it was formerly a church called,a restaurant calledTrinity. That's when theyfirst started seeing some of theparanormal activity going on. When theyrenovated the space froma church to a restaurant, some strangethings would happen, likefaucets would randomly turn on& off, or the ceiling fans wouldjust start turning on. Phone receiverswould lift up & drop,& they were kind of just little weird,strange things. Then theyactually started seeing theghost of a little girl, & she wasalways described as beingabout 5 or 6 years old.She wore a white dress. She had blondepigtails. The owner at thetime brought in a psychic,& the psychic medium connected withthat spirit, found outthat her name was Lorraine.They did a few seances. They made contactwith her. They've gotEVP recordings of her, her voice.They have EVP recordings of peoplechanting throughout thebuilding. Orbs upon orbs havebeen videotaped in this structure.Years go by, Old Glory nowtakes over the restaurant,& they're continuing to see this littlegirl. In addition to that,they also see a man who'svery tall. He wears all black. He has anice black hat. I've beentold by the bartenders thatthey saw that ghost of the tall man sooften that if a customerwalked in & he was tall,wearing all black, they would just noteven bother to offer him a drink becausethey assumed that hewas the ghost. There's a lot of activitythere. I've had a lot of personalexperiences with thespirits in Old Glory myself. So again,that's another reason whyI think it's so special for me.Residential homes in Keyport that have asupernatural connection to them are alsoa part of the tour. & you justmentioned previously thatthat's the area where a lotof the houses have that supernaturalenergy. Can you, Genevieve,tell me about the spooky sideof some of those homes?Much like Red Bank, Keyport has anenormous amount of veryold, beautiful historic homes. Our MainStreet area is where thewealthy people first builttheir homes in town. & you can see justabout every example ofVictorian architecture as youwalk down Main Street. So it's absolutelylovely. But of course, withthat history comes a lot ofevents that may cause some residualhauntings or some sentient hauntings aswell. There's one homein particular that was a very well-knownspeakeasy. & the owner of the speakeasyflaunted the fact that he had never beencaught with any illegalalcohol during prohibition.He had been raided many times. They nevercame up with any alcohol.So that's a little interestingtidbit of the house. But in more recentyears, in the last 30 to40 years, many people haveexperienced paranormal activity.Most notably, they see a man whois in a uniform. They oftensee him appear in children's bedrooms inone of the apartments.The feeling is always thathe's there to protect the children.It's a nice kind of energy,I think, to have around. But tenantafter tenant has seen & described thesame thing. & whatI love about my Keyport Toursin particular is we often get peopleverifying, independentlyverifying some of our stories.A few years back, I was doing a tour onHalloween night. & a gentlemanapproached our tour,& asked if he could share one of hisexperiences. & hestarts getting into thiswhole story about how he lived in a houseon Main Street. & every night, hisgirlfriend would seethe ghost in the bedroom, & they wouldalways argue because henever saw it. So I asked himwhat house it was. & he was talkingabout the same housethat's actually on the tour.I just turned to my group, & I said,Ladies & gentlemen,I did not pay him to say that.[Laughter]So we have a lot of that. There's anotherhome that was owned by a doctor in town,a very well-known doctor who actually wasone of the foundersof our local hospital.It's believed that he still haunts thehouse that they live in. I'vehad people on my tour actuallysee the doctor on the front porchof that house.
