All right , welcome back to Coffee Talk with the Cajun Mamas podcast . Today we're talking about birthdays , Birthdays . Yes , October's my birthday man , it is your birthday .

Speaker 1So today we're talking about birthdays . Your birthday is coming up , it is , and what's something that you just love to do for your birthday I like to eat a big fat juicy steak for my birthday , my husband knows my birthday meal and he could .
Speaker 2We don't even go nowhere because I can't find a better steak in this world than one . My husband throws on the green egg at our house . He knows how to season it just like I like it , and he gets a big , thick ribeye Like I'm talking two to three inches thick Usually at Keeper's Okay , keeper's in Church Point Okay , they got really good meat .
Speaker 2You just call them up , you call them , and or you go in and tell them you need a ribeye cut . You know , like , however long have a thick , you want it , but we do it real thick and we end up sharing it because it's so much meat . But , like the old people , you know , sharing it , yeah , yeah like the old couples share their meals .
Speaker 2Yeah , that's what we do , and then I'll . Usually it don't . The sides don't matter a whole lot , because it's all about the steak for me . But a good caesar salad with mac and cheese or something , and that meal , that trifecta right there , I'm a happy girl not a box mac and cheese or what I'll spring for the velveta .
Speaker 1Oh , what the deluxe . Are we going for the shells ? What are we doing ? The shells ? I like the shells . I like the little curly ends on the shells .
Speaker 2You know what I'm talking about the curly ends on the shells , you know like it's got that hump , yeah , and then like inside it kind of curls , yeah , yeah , and it catches all the cheese inside . It , do , it do and cheese .
Speaker 1You know I mean , if it's your birthday , you ought to really make you some .
Speaker 2And my birthday cake of choice is you already know a red velvet , nothing bundt cake . That's the ultimate cake for me .
Speaker 1I'm with you on the nothing bundt , but you know how I feel about red velvet . You just don't do red velvet .
Speaker 2I don't know how we're friends , I just don't love red velvet . I still love you anyway .
Speaker 1I love you too , and it's your birthday , so you can have red velvet if you want to .
Speaker 2Yes , the lemon nothing bun cake is a close second . I love the lemon bun cake .
Speaker 1My favorite is the white chocolate raspberry .
Speaker 2You can't go wrong with nothing over there oh not really Nothing bun cakes . I don't know what they put in there . It's delicious and that's my favorite for birthdays . And before I knew about nothing but cake my mama would make and she still would if I asked her to , but she would . Red velvet was always my favorite so it was a red velvet cake for my birthday . Yeah , what ? What about you like ? What's your favorite birthday cake for you ? I ?
Speaker 1like brownies . Oh , I don't want to . I don't like , I don't really want a cake , I want brownies . And my sister one year she said what do you want as your birthday cake ? And I said I want paleo brownies because we have this really good paleo recipe .
Speaker 2You used to make that often we did .
Speaker 1We call them the million dollar brownies because they're very expensive to make . But you know , because I was on a very strict , you know at the time I was very strict on my diet but honestly , those paleo brownies are something special .
Speaker 2They didn't taste healthy . Huh , they didn't taste yeah .
Speaker 1Now my friend Avery Gordon made me a pan of brownies recently , and when I'm telling you , I ain't ever , ever , ate a brownie so good she made that from scratch Between her and yes , and I got the recipe from her Between her and Katie Kramer making them brownies .
Speaker 2If it was as good as Katie Kramer's brownies , I would lose my mind . So good , Listen the end . You like chocolate chips in the ?
Speaker 1brownies . Is there any other way ? Just accent it doesn't exist if there's not chunks in it .

Speaker 1No Same , I'm a no nuts brownie . Call me again when I'm about 70 years old , I guess . But no , I don't , I don't , no offense anybody . No offense If you like nuts in your brownies . Go for it . I don't care for it . Okay , I want that chocolate chunk Me too .
Speaker 2I just don't think it exists if have chocolate chunks in it or chocolate chips . I got you okay . So , yeah , I'm not a cake girl . I like cookies , cookies and brownies . Yeah , that's me , that's my husband's weakness .
Speaker 1Cookies and brownies , yeah , yeah I will eat them if they're there . Cake will sit out for the most part for me I don't care for cake but don't , don't come around me with a cookie or a brownie what like chocolate chip or what ? Oh , chocolate chip , my favorite cookie is the . Almond Joy cookies .

Speaker 2And I didn't think I would like those , because they have coconut in them and I'm not a big coconut I find like a German chocolate cake . No , because I feel like I'm eating grass with the coconut ?

Speaker 2But them Almond Joy cookies . I could hurt myself on those too . Oh , those are so good they are .

Speaker 2could treat yourself to . Oh , you know what I'm about to say Some donuts from Gautreaux's in Reign . Gautreauxatrose donuts at 705 South Adams Avenue in rain , louisiana . Y'all . They are a family-owned and operated business , open seven days a week , 5 am to 11 am . Donuts are made fresh every single day . They got the donut holes , of course . That was my favorite as a kid getting a little bag of donut holes .
Speaker 2Oh look , all the kids are like I know , yeah , it's like a little personal donut . You know , they even have the old-fashioned cake style donuts , if that's , if that's your thing . That's my favorite . They have kolaches and butter biscuits and they serve up hot community coffee too , every day . So give a go-tros donut a visit if you're in this area .
Take some time yeah , uh , birthday parties what kind ? Let's talk about throwing a birthday party for our kids . A visit , if you're in this area , take some time . Yeah , birthday parties . Let's talk about throwing a birthday party for our kids , though .
Speaker 2What type of birthday party do your babies have ? Well , let's say my first baby , it was always birthday parties at home , always a theme , and I would buy all the decorations . I went all out until I had my second baby Poor thing you know and then it was just basic things like a cake and maybe a little banner , a streamer , plates , cups , and that's it . And now that they older , we go somewhere . We don't do home parties , no more .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 2We take a few friends with them . You know they'll have their class friends or whatever . And we go Mr Gotti's pizza . They play for half an hour we done in two hours and they pick up the mess everybody's done , everybody's happy kids , parents alike .
Speaker 1I know there's nothing I don't love better than a mr Gotti's birthday party actually my little nephew's having one soon and even my sister-in-law was like hey , you getting excited about that , mr Gattisberry . Yes , I am yeah , because I know I'm going to get my kids are going to be happy . They're going to go play . You know the pizza's good and everybody's happy .
Speaker 2It's a good price and it's low . It's low , low maintenance . You know , yeah , we've moved away from the big grand parties and now it's more simple parties . Oh yeah , I feel like you learn your lesson after your first job .
Speaker 1You really do , and there's just , especially when you have this many . But it's just like okay , Amazon does this thing where if you have a theme party , you can order the whole kit Balloon streamers , Yep , I mean , I think I paid $25 cupcake toppers For everything for that Moana birthday party . We just threw at us and I'm like that was all I needed .
Speaker 2Thank God they do that , because even I feel like , even with just within the last 10 years , because my oldest is almost 10 . When she was a baby or whatever , I physically had to go to Party City to get all the decorations by a mall and it was so expensive . That's , that's old .
Speaker 1That's the old way now . We order Amazon and we get to the front door Praise the Lord , praise the Lord , save my life . And then you know , we call and we order the cake , but my sister used to make a nice little I mean , we had a character cake and all that for all the kids and and now I'm like sis , please don't do that . She's got kids too , like you know . Let's order a cookie cake .
Speaker 2I was wondering why she didn't make a Moana cake this past time .
Speaker 1She usually does , and if I'd asked her she would have .
Speaker 2But it's just like don't worry about that . It's just the way you know . It's the time in our life right now , don't .
Speaker 1We got time to make cakes and all that and do that for fun . We did that you know , I said don't worry about that , let's just do something quick and easy and they're not going to remember them kids .
Speaker 2All they need is that sugar . They don't care what form it comes in .
Speaker 1They're going to eat the cookie more likely , and it's easier to eat than a big cake . Anyway , I'm the one that eats all the cake because my sister makes it old-fashioned style with the almond , the buttercream .
Speaker 2Oh my gosh yeah .
Speaker 1So yeah , we're not going to play that .
Speaker 2What about when you were growing up ? What kind of parties your mama threw for you ?
Speaker 1Oh my gosh . So I remember my mama . We have it on video , of course . You know like my Aunt Susie would video . So much with the big camcorder .
Speaker 2Oh yeah , you have to put it on your shoulder . It was so big and the tape was inside the cassette .
Speaker 1And I'm talking about the big one , I'm not talking about that little one they did later .
Speaker 2Yeah , no , I know what you mean .
Speaker 1We have this on tape , but it was always like . You know , my mama made the tape , you know like from the box .
Speaker 2It was at the house . Okay , it was at your house .
Speaker 1I don't think I ever had a party that wasn't at my house and then the cousins would come over and some of our friends , kind of like we do now . I like the simplicity of it . And then she had this game and she would like in the video . She would poke a pin in it and whoever had my name in the balloon would get a prize .
Speaker 1Or you'd turn the plate over and whoever had a certain number or whatever , oh , easy party games , easy party games . Bet you forgot about that one . Yeah , yeah , that kind of stuff .
Speaker 2Yeah , I can remember having home parties and my mama one year made us a pinata which was just a brown paper bag full of candy and they strung it up and tied it up outside and we just whacked the heck out of it with a broomstick .
Speaker 1Pinata , I mean instant pinata fun for the kids Pin the tail on the donkey .
Speaker 2Oh , just simple little games , yeah , simple stuff like that . Go run outside and play outside , you know .
Speaker 1Or , you know , whenever you was really lucky , your friend had a party at McDonald's . Oh my , you ever been to a McDonald's ?
Speaker 2I was never privileged enough to have a friend that had a McDonald's party .
Speaker 1now , they had that little room in the back Play place McDonald's play place right , yeah , but there was a party room , oh , and you could go in there and they had like big seats and they were all colored and like had the McDonald characters on it .
Speaker 2Oh , I feel like .
Speaker 1I missed out . You really did . I am so sad for you . That was nice and then you go . I don't even remember the food part . I don't even know if there was food , like there might have just been .
Speaker 2Eat cake and go play in the play place , y'all didn't get some french fries . I don't even remember I was there to play . It was all about the play . Yes .
Speaker 1I was there to play , so I don't remember there being food . Maybe there was , I don't know . I know we had cake presents in the party room and then we could go play in the play place .
Speaker 2Man , what a time .
Speaker 1Do you remember playing at the McDonald's ?
Speaker 2Yes , I do remember a play place that was the most interesting apparatus that you remember . Oh , they had that hamburger-shaped thing Right . Yeah , yeah , that's what I'm thinking of , and it had the jail handles , jail handles , and it would go back and forth .
Speaker 1No , no , no , you climb up it , oh , oh , you're in jail . And then you're in jail , the jail , the hamburger . The hamburger-la yeah yeah , that was the name and it was a jail . Why did we find that so fun ? I don't know . I feel like that was some kind of generational , very strange , but yes , anyway .
Speaker 2And now a play place . Mcdonald's play place don't exist , you know . No , it doesn't .
Speaker 1And surely if you put a jail cell in the mcdonald play place , that would be a cause of .
Speaker 1Child endangerment Absolutely All right . Let's take this second to talk about Lily and Me . Lily and Me is a pacifier very near and dear to my heart . Speaker 1So anything with Barbie , barbies , I mean Barbie was so big . I was a Barbie lover too . You know , if I unwrapped a Barbie , that was like the ultimate birthday present for me . It don't matter if it was Barbie , a Ken , a Skipper , a whoever . I wanted . Barbie . It was all about Barbie .
Speaker 2What about you ? Yeah , I was a big , big Barbie lover , but one present in my mind that stuck out . And my poor kids ? They just won't get to experience this because I'm not such a nice parent like my mama was .
Speaker 1I can't wait to hear this .
Speaker 2I wanted a kitten . Oh , I know your face says it all right now because I wouldn't do it for mine .
Speaker 1Oh my god .
Speaker 2But there was a kitten I wanted so bad and we always had cats around and like they would have litters and we'd give them away . They had this little black , solid black little cat and I didn't want to give him away . I wanted him so bad and my parents were like no , no , no , we have to , we have to give him away , whatever . Well , on my birthday they put a little ribbon around her neck and gave me that and I cried and I cried and I cried yes , and I don't know what happened to that cat Now that I'm thinking about it , it was so special to you .
Speaker 2It was so special that I can't even remember what happened to poor Mooney Mooney . I named him Mooney .
Speaker 1Poor guy is so funny . Oh , mooney , poor little Mooney , poor little Mooney , you needed him so bad . It was a boy or a girl .
Speaker 2You know , I think I think it was a boy . I think I said girl , but I think it was a boy . But poor Mooney . I don't know what happened to Mooney . I think he ran away , but I cried . I was so happy . That was my memorable birthday present .
Speaker 1So I hope my kids don't hear this , because you're not getting a cat .
Speaker 2Okay , oh look , I'm the one rolling my eyes and I'm the one with a cat outside , outside , outside I mean mine would want you know inside , and we're not doing that .

Speaker 1Yes , I'm so sorry , your mama's not like that baby . Right but you know , it is nice to go to those parties and see all the detail that these mamas put into it . Yes , you know , that's really , that's love , right there .
Speaker 2And some , I mean they love doing it .

Speaker 2And it's an experience , but anyway , oh for sure , yeah , birthday memories . I hope that unlocks some good memories these discussions .
