The Building Safety Act and associated statutory legislation demands that only competent people and competent organisations are involved in the construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure. This is as a direct consequence of the failure of Grenfell Tower where 72 people lost their lives through a catalogue of construction industry failures. This requirement to demonstrate competence will change our industry’s culture as it will affect all of us who practice within it.
Faye Burnett is an experienced Programme Director who is leading the Super Sector Programme, which focuses on the creation of competence frameworks for those working in installation and maintenance. The programme has over 600 people from across industry who are focusing on what it means to be competent in an enormously diverse and varied sector. She describes the structures and processes of being in the Industry Competence Steering Group and what it will mean for every individual and business operating in the sector. Given the fundamental nature of her and her programme's work she urges businesses and their representative bodies to get involved and for individuals to review what is necessary to allow them to be competent in their chosen field.
