The solar sector has two big people challenges to solve if it is to deliver on its opportunity to become a major generator of the UK’s energy mix and support a “Just Transition” to a low carbon, low cost energy grid.  The first is the sheer number of skilled people that it needs to design, deliver and maintain the infrastructure and the second is the diversity of thought that is needed to overcome the many challenges that it will encounter in delivering this infrastructure.  As Einstein is oft quoted: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

The partial answer to these challenges is to broaden out recruitment to include under-represented parts of our society and to do this as quickly as possible if we are to get this expertise and diversity of leadership into the Boards of our solar businesses.

This podcast interviews Claire Gardner, Marketing lead in Europe for Solis Inverters and a founding member of Women in Solar Europe, or WISEu.  Claire also leads on the work of the UK trade body Solar Energy UK in broadening out the origin of workers within the sector and advising companies within the sector on best practice.
