The Solar Road Map has been published by Government to highlight the opportunities and challenges to install over 50GW of solar PV generation within the UK by 2030.  It is the culmination of two years’ work by the Solar Taskforce, which set up four key groups to look at specific challenges.  The first group was the Network Group, which looked at overcoming grid constraints that prevented solar installations being connected to the grid.  This was chaired by Lawrence Slade, CEO of the Energy Networks Association.

Lawrence discusses the role of the Energy Networks Association (ENA) on this podcast, assessing the huge changes in approach, regulation and methodology to connect energy generators and users.  He explores the resilience of the UK network infrastructure and the changes in regulation that his members are both informing and delivering to enable decentralised renewable generation. Lawrence credits the Solar Taskforce with encouraging better communication between the various organisations and their regulator in order to address the challenges.  He also describes many of the “dominoes” that are needed to bring into line if we are to achieve clean power by 2030 and hence net-zero by 2050.

Lawrence and members of the Energy Networks Association are in the eye of the storm.  Whilst the public take secure energy supplies for granted, ENA has to enable clean power through a significant overhaul of their assets.  Listen to see what has changed and to hear how confident the CEO is of achieving the goal.
