There are two things that construction needs to learn from the retail sector.  The first is that it is all about customer service.  Fail at this and you fail at the first step in business.  The second is that you must modernise and take every marginal gain available.  Retail is a hugely competitive sector and if you fail to do either of these things then you will not be, and probably don’t deserve to be, in business.  These lessons are increasingly applied to construction and certainly to the scaffolding sector.

Wayne Connolly is the MD of Connolly Scaffolding Ltd and the current President and Chair of the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation.  He also chairs the industry skills card with nearly 100,000 professional installers, CISRS (The Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme).  Wayne talks about is role in modernising these organisations and making them fit for the next twenty years.  He is an advocate of strong governance within his organisations, recognising the value of diversity and good checks and balances in propelling businesses and trade federations forward.

Listen to hear what the scaffolders are doing to prepare their organisation for a future of change.  Listen to Wayne’s ideas on working with the FE Sector to improve attraction to and routes into scaffolding and the importance of collaborating on the world wide stage.
