IS LOSING YOUR DOGMAS A GOOD THING?
Dogmas, like stereotypes, are generally considered to be something that should not be so tightly held that they limit progressive thinking and intellectual growth. No doubt there is a truth in that. Dogmas though, could be viewed in the light of saying that there are dogmas - and then there are dogmas. That is to imply that some dogmas have benefits while others do not. Or to say that there are big dogmas and there are little ones. Rigidly (and often righteously) saying that you are open-minded, when you are not, is every bit dogmatic as standing unflinching on a religious or political stand. Either way that’s a big one and limiting. Shedding such a position is certainly good. But what about little dogmas? Which incidentally, we all have. Such as your views on money, sex, work, family and relationships etc - to name just a few basics of life. Plus, can dogmas be foundational to growth? And do our dogmas define us even after we have made an effort to move on from them?
