The following podcast is intended for the true audiences. This question is as well. We also audience place that we're going to wait for the first. And everything in between. I'm here with my co-host, Mr. Damon Poole.
SPEAKER_01Yo.
SPEAKER_00And of course, I'm Hill. So, have you been since the last episode then, Bud?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, not too bad. You know, working. So? Working and drinking.
SPEAKER_00Working and drinking. I've been doing the working but not the drinking. So did a bit of a boring old fart the past couple weeks.
SPEAKER_01So gotta make sure we've got a nice work-drink balance.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'll second that. I'll second that, unfortunately though. I'm not uh doing it at the moment because uh not really the funds at the moment to do that, so true. But anyway, yeah. So welcome to those new listeners who have just joined us. Um this is gonna be part two of us discussing this year, 2024's download festival. So last episode we covered getting there, the Thursday and the Friday, the first day of bands. So, and how Damon was single-handedly the most prepared person, but also the most likely to open up a bakery in quick succession.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, when in Rome. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00When in a field, do as they do in a field. Yeah. Now that's fair. So yeah, I mean, uh, I guess we'll just pick it up where we where we left off. So we left it off where we had gone back after Queens of the Stone Age on Friday night. Yeah. So yeah, I mean, do you kind of want to talk us through your Friday night back at camp? Uh don't remember much. Don't remember much.
SPEAKER_01Uh I know we left. Um I remember walking. Was it muddy then?
SPEAKER_00It was muddy.
SPEAKER_01It was muddy for the whole thing. Yep, that's right, yeah. Uh I remember that we didn't walk on the path. We walked in the mud all the way down. Then I was like, you know what? The shower's open. I just gotta run my uh my crocs in the shower. Crocs. Uh but I couldn't be bothered. So I think we just went back to the the little uh gazebo thing that we made.
SPEAKER_00The gazebo, the sultan's abode where we'd got all the tents round it.
SPEAKER_01We just switched on the fairy lights.
SPEAKER_00We did, we had a bit of a drink.
SPEAKER_01Yep, sat back drunk. We didn't drink too much though, I don't think. No, I don't think we drank too much. We were all fucked. Yeah, in general, Dacker drunk too much. So too high to drink.
SPEAKER_00Well, you were. I was just like, I'm just so tired at this point. But uh yeah, a fairly early night. I think we all dropped off by about midnight. Yeah. Something like that. Um then yeah, got up the next morning for the Saturday and started getting all excited for Fallout Boy, really. Oh yes. Um but yeah, I think in the morning it was just essentially a wake-up rinse repeat of the day before.
SPEAKER_01Um that was cold night again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that was a very cold night, and this was the night where we'd first had our new blow-up bed after the death of the uh the one that we originally were gonna bring with us.
SPEAKER_01Um this was the night where I was so cold. I had three pairs of uh socks, I had like two pairs of shorts and some pajama bottoms, uh a t-shirt, a woolly jacket, a sleeping bag, a pillow, my hood was up, and I was there shivering still. And he bought the kitchen sink as well. Yeah. I was thinking about putting my shoes on, I was that cold. Your shoes or your crocs. Uh whichever was least muddy. Valid valid but that was it, that was the that was the uh thing I needed to be like, you know what, I need to go and see uh see somebody about some thick socks to keep me warm. See you Mr. Fat Frankus. Nope, didn't go to him. Oh no, you didn't, did you? You went to the the one that we got the army surplus one. That's the one, yeah. Which was not too bad really if I paying for some super thick socks.
SPEAKER_00No, to be fair, I mean d the the actual stalls this year were a lot better than last year. Um it was actually on this day, um, because I forgot to mention in the last episode that we all kind of went round on the Thursday and had a bit of a tootle before the band started. We kind of had a bit of a wander around and whatnot. And Nikki bought herself a back patch, uh bringing the horizon one for a jacket. So yeah, I remember that. I sewed that on for a in the morning, and then I taught our friend Rick how to sew as well because he wanted to get some patches and stuff and put them on, so I taught him that, and he's now gone off since then and finished off his battle jacket completely. So um yeah, what you learn in the field stays with you from the field. Why why don't you just get these patches tattooed on you? One, because I haven't got that much money. And two battle skin. Battleskin. Is that the opposite to foreskin? Is that what that is?
SPEAKER_01No, no, that's the uh that's where you put your favourite band.
SPEAKER_00Oh god. Imagine if you'd uh got a tenacious D tactic and you could literally have like, come on, here I'm in here, gee now.
SPEAKER_01You you get the um like from the movie where um it's like a a birthmark towed on your ass.
SPEAKER_00It says Tanakh. And then you've got the other one that says USD. Oh god. But yeah, um so in the morning, like I was saying, it was fairly chilled. Um we kind of just sat around camp, really, and Fred a part of noodle. Yeah, Fred cooked his bacon and his burgers and stuff. Oh yeah. And on the way up towards the site proceeded to shit himself and somehow managed to catch it with his butt cheeks and then waddle all the way back to change. Ah. Which was impressive to say the least, that he waddled all the way back. He literally got there and was cueing a shot.
SPEAKER_01Wasn't it behind an actual toilet? Something like that, yeah, you didn't think he realised it until afterwards.
SPEAKER_00And he squatted down and no, no, no, he farted as he was walking. Ah but it was by the toilets and he didn't realise until later on, because otherwise he could have like done something about it, but he just waddled all the way back to the campsite. Just grab it and throw it. I mean, I think that's what he did in the end. But um yeah, so the first band of the day was quite late because all of us were feeling quite tired. Yeah. And all of us were feeling quite knackered, so I think the first band that we actually saw of the day was Baby Metal. Or rather, we saw two songs of Baby Metal.
SPEAKER_01I feel like we did see somebody before that.
SPEAKER_00Did we? I don't recall seeing anyone before that.
SPEAKER_01Who was on before Baby Metal?
SPEAKER_00Frank Carter and the Rattleslages.
SPEAKER_01Ah, maybe not then. No, we didn't see them. We m it must have been like between sets we got there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I think he was on just as we were arriving in. Yeah, so then we got back to our usual spot and Baby Metal started, so they got through the first song, and then immediately as they started playing the second song, the heavens opened up, and we were all basically sat in a line tinting uh pump shows. Not me.
SPEAKER_01Well not you, because you you hardcored it and didn't do it, but I I just put my head down and took it.
SPEAKER_00Took it like a man. Uh but yeah, we the rest of us, we all hunkered down, got our heads down and whatnot, and just kind of yeah, just embraced it. But it was funny because all of us were laughing, I think, in that row because of how crazy the weather was. We just kind of was like, you know what, we'll just charge it. There's nothing we can do, we're in it, let's just have a laugh. But what made me laugh more was the look on I can't remember a really name, the the lead vocalist from Baby Metal. Yeah, when she realised they'd gotta get off the stage because the heavens had opened, like the look of surprise on her face. I was like, that was quite funny, but unfortunately, when they did come back out, they came back out probably about half an hour later, didn't they?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't actually remember uh timings. Um I remember rain, blackout, they come back on. That was that's all I mean, that was too high.
SPEAKER_00Again, it was too high, but um yeah, they came back out, they did the same song again, and then one more song, and then another one, and then that was it. As he did the one the electric call boy one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, electric call boy, obviously one co was ill. Really wanted to watch them with Electric Call Boy, that'd have been so good. Too bad he was ill.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it is too bad to be fair. I mean Hopefully next year. Well, yeah, I mean they were there last year, um, being 2023, but I didn't see them. Uh. Because there was other bands on, and I thought I'm not going in that tent, it's gonna be too fucking hot because it was too hot to be indoors.
SPEAKER_01What tent were they in last time? Kerrang. Ah, okay, okay. And they're there on main. Yeah, neither on main. Well, they should have been before, but they weren't. Yeah, well there's a lot of bands that should have been on main. We were not. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Namely Planterra. That's one of the ones I could think of.
SPEAKER_01Busted.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they would have been grey on Maine as well, but Wheatus. Nah.
SPEAKER_01I think that should have been an opus, not in the tenor.
SPEAKER_00Wheelish.
SPEAKER_01Dire Wheelish. I mean, at least you did come on with Ponin for Sue.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they did, actually. Um but yeah. But yeah, it was quite sad about Baby Metal because it's like I kind of wanted to see them a little bit because I didn't get to see Hanneby for the security thing.
unknownBeautiful.
SPEAKER_00But I really wanted to see Baby Metal and the fact that it got rained off. I was just like, you know what, okay, fine. But I've heard other people say that baby metal shouldn't be invited back because apparently every time they come it absolutely pisses it down. So God knows what they must think of our weather because every time they've been here they've been well what you do is you have them as a backup in case the weather's too dry. What like 20, 2023? Just have them uh swap it out. Yeah, we need shit weather, come on, come on, everyone's getting too warm, put them on, put them on, come on guys, get the gear ready. But um yeah, that was a little bit disappointing. Um I mean for me I was gonna go see while she sleeps. Yeah, I really wanted to see them. I didn't because I was like, I'm tired and I'm saving my energy for what's coming later, so yeah, I I couldn't move.
SPEAKER_01I had no grip.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I wanted to, but is that like no grip on reality? Um no, more of just no grip of my crops.
SPEAKER_00I mean I could have been a treaded one line.
SPEAKER_01It it was well I tried burning my shoe at one point to get more grip, but that didn't work.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you nearly set the whole fucking shoe on fire. That was on the Sunday, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01You did that. Yeah, that's fine. Nothing wrong with that. But yeah. Um yeah, I really wanted to see them. Just could not I could have gone barefoot, I would have I would have had more grip.
SPEAKER_00I just couldn't move. I was like, you know what, I've got Enter Shikara, I've got Pantera, I'm good. I'm just gonna take it easy. Like this day was the one that had the least amount of bands that I wanted to see on. So I thought tactically I'll take it easy today because yesterday was a bit of a full-on day. I was tired already by this point, and yeah, the weather wasn't great, so I was kind of like thinking tactically about how long I'm gonna be out in it, things like that. So but yeah, um after that went and had some food, which we'll discuss food in a little while, and toilets and things of that nature, all the fun stuff. Yeah, yeah, we'll get there on then because I've got a lot to say about the toilets, the same as I had to say last year. Obviously, this podcast wasn't a thing last year, but wow, the toilets bring that into it as well, because then I can tell you about the shit show.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't describe it, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, so didn't see while she sleeps, unfortunately. Um, because I was really looking forward to that, but I just thought, no, I'm too tired. I need to just have a day where I'm not going absolutely mad with it. Um I mean we weren't even at the front of the main stage. No, we were like really far back, yeah. To be fair, where we normally sit. It's kind of like where all the the only way I can describe it is, and if you guys are there next year, you will see us in the exact same spot in a line because that's where we go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I think next year I want to try and get right to the front, so no, I mean I will for some bands, because hopefully it's not gonna be an absolute piss down for us.
SPEAKER_01I want to touch that front barrier. That is my quest.
SPEAKER_00I mean it is great when you're at the front, to be fair. Yeah. Especially at main stage. Jesus Christ, I've only ever done it once where I got to the front and that was for uh for volbeat. Nice. And it was yeah, I was just like g getting the full in my face with volbeat, so yeah. Um and Rob nodded his head at me as he walked past as well. Which I was like, I was like, cool, wicked. Awesome. But that was back in 2014, which I'll do we might do an episode on that later on down the line. Um maybe on the route to when they announced the bands. Yes. I think that might be a good tie-in. Yeah, that'll be good. So, but I've got not as much to say about that because it was so long ago, but I can remember a lot of things. It might be good getting Chris on that episode as well, because he was with me there. So um he's coming this year? I think he is. Next, yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Yeah, sorry because we're confusing things. This year is 24, next year is 25, so I think he's coming next year, yeah, for sure. But yeah, um, next band we saw was Enter Shikari, which was one of the ones that I was looking forward to the most coming into it. Um I'm surprised at how many songs they played that I actually knew. Because I'd listened to them a little bit coming into it, and I thought, well, I don't remember a lot of these songs. Um, but they played a few of the old ones and some middle ones and some new stuff, but the new stuff I haven't really bothered with because it's like more of a nostalgia type thing for me.
SPEAKER_01The new stuff is it's good, it's worth it.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I'll have to give it a tip of that.
SPEAKER_01What's that song Set Me on Fire? That's a really good one. Try it it's got that nostalgic feel. It's pretty decent.
SPEAKER_00It's worth it. As long as it's got the nostalgic feel, then I'm good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because that that's what I look for.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then um that one featuring Wargasm. Which it's a fairly newish one.
SPEAKER_00I can't stand Wargasm. You can't. I can't stand Wargasm.
SPEAKER_01I mean I've never listened to them on their own.
SPEAKER_00No, don't. I can't, I can't. Sorry for any of you guys are Wargasm fans out there, but I just I can't. Like I've tried, and I can't. I just can't. They're one of them bands, just not for me, not my cup of tea.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, I didn't I didn't really I'm all for a Wargasm, just not the band.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, definitely. But uh not great. Other than that though, they said it was banging. Um I enjoyed myself. Yeah. Had a good good good laugh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was good. Um a bit flaky again.
SPEAKER_00It was a bit actually at times again. I don't know why the dubstep parts were just not as impactful. No, they didn't have any oomph. Like I was saying, uh I think I mentioned this before, like Prodigy's sound for the techno stuff has always like that had a lot of oomph in 2023. This didn't know it was like l it was like lacking in that balls to it. Yeah, yeah. But other than that though, great set, and the fact that he died in the mud as well, that was quite that was quite funny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's good. Um I was I was listening to it and I was like, what's this part? It was so quiet. And then the wind changed direction. I went, oh yeah, I know this one. It was that that that week.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what they did with the sound, like I can't quite put my finger on it, but it wasn't good on the main. Not much. They didn't do much with the sound. No, I don't know what I don't know if it was the sound towers weren't on or what, but it was almost like someone was going.
SPEAKER_01This part, it's almost like a colour wheel. It was going through tail one, two, three, four, and it was just going do do do do do do do do.
SPEAKER_00Just circling between all of the it was almost like it was going, hi guys here like that kind of thing. It was like really it's like sinking into a fan. Yeah, yeah, it was. Yeah. A moving fan. Yeah, that's actually not a bad description, actually, to be fair.
SPEAKER_01But um maybe they need some like wind protection, big big cocksock over the top of them. Cocksock Yeah, watch out for the download shafts. That's it. Oh god, wait till next year, download rubbers.
SPEAKER_00Download Johnny's. Yeah, download this love.
SPEAKER_01Comes with metal spikes.
SPEAKER_00Fucking Christ. Ripped for her pleasure. Oh Christ. Oh, that was grim. But no, um, next band we saw was Let Off Spring.
SPEAKER_01Yes, offspring.
SPEAKER_00They were good. I never really liked the offspring that much, but they were good.
SPEAKER_01I like offspring, but I don't listen to them enough. There's just a couple of handful of songs that are like yeah, that's good. I I like that a bit nostalgia. Whack it up, turn it up. And then yeah, meh, afterwards.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, they they were good live though, like I say that most of the songs I did not know. I was just like, okay.
SPEAKER_01I think they belong more maybe Opus. Yeah, I think and I don't think this would be one of the like the main because on the post you've got the bands with the logos and then the ones below where it's just text. Yeah. I'd probably put them third on third down there somewhere, so it's just text.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'd have put them where baby metal were.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, somewhere like that, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'd have put baby metal there, uh lower than that, or put them on second stage.
SPEAKER_01I'd put probably the same Same level.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And then offspring probably put the one second stage, like you say, but just it was good, but again the audio wasn't there. I don't know what happened. Yeah. At the main stage, it just seemed like the audio was just not there on the day. No. Whatsoever.
SPEAKER_01But uh it was hungover.
SPEAKER_00It's a good way of putting it. It was hungover. It was hanging. Yeah. Anging at its ass. But um and then uh Event Sevenfold broke it. We'll get to that.
SPEAKER_01We'll get to that. Well it was Maybe it was already like partially damaged, and then they just broke broke the rest.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, fucked it beyond brother. But now um after that, are you then departed, you guys, with Connor, to go see the legendary Pantera.
SPEAKER_01Ah yes. I would love to have gone to see Pantera. But again, he was fucked. And then again, no grip.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Now, I've got a lot to say about Pantera. Um I'll start off with the good stuff before I go into the the the nit nitpicky comments about what I've got. So first of all, I can't believe I've actually got to say that I've seen Pantera. Like I never thought I would ever get to say those words. Pantera?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Who who was that on the WhatsApp at the introduction with the costumes and stuff?
SPEAKER_00I don't know, mate.
SPEAKER_01I'll have to I'll have to go back and have a look.
SPEAKER_00I don't know, mate. No, Pantera didn't. They had the big fucking big clock. Banner. No, no, they're big clock. No, they had the the bit they had the banner up and then they dropped it when they started, but oops. Yeah, oops. Oops, then there's Zach Wilde and there's Phil. So but Yep, midwipe. Oh fuck. I'm on call with my pants around my ankle, some bitch. But no, um, it was great, yeah. Uh like I say, didn't think I'd get to see them ever. So that's great. Granted, it hasn't got like, you know, it hasn't got uh Diamond Vinny and unfortunately, but for what it was, you know, they've got the drummer from Anthrax and they've got Zack Wilde obviously playing leg guitar, it was good in that regard, you know. Actually got to see Zack Wilde again, something that I didn't think I'd do, especially not in Pantera. Um, those two things never really clocked in my brain as a thing that would ever happen, but you know, it it worked. Um it's great to hear all the old bangers that they played. Um there was one part where they were like, oh, all the old Phil was like, Oh, all the older folk will know what to do with this song, and they started it, and we was like, Oh, okay, well, we all know what to do anyway, so we all just started moving as one, but it's a good job we went when we did, because it was so fucking packed, literally, it was like sardine can. Like, literally, I I had a guy's dick in my ass the whole time, and I had my dick in someone's ass in front of me the whole time. Literally, like it was that packed, like you couldn't move. And the people who were trying to squeeze through, no, they weren't getting through. You just give them a look, like, no, you ain't getting through this part because it was absolutely round. And I know that Fred and Kel were further towards the front for it. Yeah. Um, but me and Connor weren't we were, you know, the inside barrier on the right. Yep. We were there, so we were like three people in front of the barrier. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So the barrier was behind us for the front part, um not the front front barrier, but the halfway. The halfway barrier, we were three in front, but even then it was rammed. Um but yeah, like I was just saying to Connor before we even went, I was like, if it doesn't rain while Flood is playing, something's wrong. Something's wrong. I was like, there has to be rain, and there was there was rain when that solo started, and like they had obviously got the pictures of Vinny and dying on the screen which just give me chills the whole time that I was there watching. Honestly, absolutely like mad, but I didn't record that much of this festival because like last year I recorded a lot, yeah, whereas this year I said to myself, I'm only gonna record the songs that I absolutely want to remember or show to people, like people's who like those songs because the rest of it I want to keep in my head, but man, like when they played Domination, man, Jesus Christ. Oh so heavy, literally, like I looked over at Connor and I just give him like the nastiest looking face I've ever given anyone like the stank face. But yeah, everyone was headbanging in unison, it was a great time. So yeah, you you did miss out on that, mate. Yeah, you you you really did miss out, but I get it. I get it. So what was going on while we were over there getting annihilated by Pantera?
SPEAKER_01Um I got seven weeks. Uh what else? Uh wasn't Polyphia on?
SPEAKER_00Uh I thought they were on the day before. No, Polyphia was the day before, mate. Okay. What it was on. No one was on main stage, it was probably just the back end of Ospring. Uh yeah. So it was just like nothing.
SPEAKER_01Did you guys go anywhere or did you just that that rings a bell actually? I believe I was asleep.
SPEAKER_00Christ.
SPEAKER_01Um from what I remember, um these people walking past it, he's got the right idea. And I went. I nodded, I gave him a wink, went back to sleep, and then uh I remember waking up, hearing a four-letter boy come on, and then uh went back to sleep, and then woke up and heard the songs that I like, and then I stood up and yeah, it was alright. Can't remember much, but it was good. That's his brief synopsis of what actually happened, so my uh my my theory is if I've thrown up, it's a good time, and I've thrown up. Not that day, but somewhere in the festival. Not far from the tent. Just after I went for a shit.
SPEAKER_00There you go. There you go. Yeah, there you go. What a guy. Um can't complain. That means as long as you had fun, mate, that's all that matters. Yeah, but um sometimes you've just got a shit in a bag. That's to be on a t-shirt. Sometimes you've got a shit in a bag. Oh great. I didn't throw it. What do you mean, Fred? Well yeah, he did that as well, didn't they? Well, you know. Oh, that was great.
SPEAKER_01So you got 11 from the best.
SPEAKER_00I will discuss campsite shenanigans for the Sunday morning beforehand because I I want to go back through a few bits, but one one of us was very messy. Yes, naughty, naughty boy, naughty, naughty boy. But um, Fallout boy, so we somehow managed to navigate and get out of that crowd. Fuck knows how we did it. We literally beelined back out of there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I um I was slipping. I was like a car on ice. So no traction.
SPEAKER_00Me and Connor come back to meet these guys at the bits they were sitting at so we could get situated for Fallout Boy. Now, while Four Light Boy was on, I did want to go see Fear Factory, and I was gonna go originally because Rick and Chloe were gonna go, and I I just couldn't like I'd put all of my energy into seeing Pantera, and I was that tired that I just looked at Rick and was like, I was like, as much as I want to go, I can't. I was like, I'm too tired, and I did say to Nikki that I would see Fallout Boy with her. So although she would have been fun on her own, yeah, I wanted to keep the promise. So I did the husband thing and stayed with the wife while uh we watched Fallout Boy, and as much as I would have liked to have seen Fear Factory, I did enjoy Fallout Boy because again, nostalgia volumes, like you know, you know, like dance, dance, thanks for the memories, stuff like that. Yeah, yeah. It just took me back to I remember that. Do you somewhat but yeah, so for me, like it was funny because like on the videos that I recorded, I recorded the wife dancing, so like I was recording and then I'd like pan it back out and pan to her just like dancing in her uh poncho in the rain while it was going on. It was like yeah, such a vibe that but I couldn't I just couldn't face going over to Fear Factory, and that as tired as I was, that's the only part about the festival I actually do regret is not going and seeing Fear Factory because if I had done that, yeah, I probably would have had a really good time, but I didn't. So yep, it is what it is. But uh, you know, I'm sure they'll be back again at some point, hopefully, or maybe they'll be at Bloodstock next year, which Bloodstock is this weekend, so we are recording this quite some time after the podcast.
SPEAKER_01Which I believe baby metal's playing there.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's probably why it's raining then.
SPEAKER_01And um Doodars. Doodars playing as well.
SPEAKER_00Great band, doodars. Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_01Uh fuck, what's his name? Nico and Oh, electric cool one. Yeah, I believe they're tending it.
SPEAKER_00Which Well, at least they get shit weather like weird as well. Because they were all it was funny because on the uh on the bloodstock pages on Facebook they were all going, oh the weather was shit downloaded, that means we're gonna have good weather this year. Ha ha ha ha. No, you're not. You watch it, now I've said that. Download's gonna be wet again next year, and so is blood stock.
SPEAKER_01I'm I'm gonna prepare for weather that that is raining. So I'm gonna get spikes in my Crocs. Um, no. They're not as versatile. As versatile. All I need is grip and my. No. Wood screws? Jesus Christ. It'll be fine. Um but I know that if I do that, it it's it's gonna go the opposite. No rain. This is why you take multiple types of shoe. Yeah, no rain, no sun, it's just gonna be a moon all the time. So your ass is gonna be out the whole time? Uh you know, I'll I'll I'll bring your Burrat, your Burat Mankini.
SPEAKER_00Ray nice. Um But yeah, so after Full Light while I finished, we quickly, quickly scarpered because they had the biggest crowd of all of the headliners.
SPEAKER_01That was gonna be fun to navigate.
SPEAKER_00So we quickly scarpered or as quickly as we could. Yeah, underlay, underlay. Still got stuck in the massive cues coming back. There wasn't as much singing as there was the year before on the way back. There was a little bit, but not.
SPEAKER_01It's because everyone was fucked.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think the energy of like just tracing through the mud had just took it out of everyone, I think. But you know, it wasn't it wasn't that bad. It just it was fun and it did make it fun in a different kind of way. I think it like added something to it that wouldn't have been there.
SPEAKER_01Wet.
SPEAKER_00Well yeah. And brown that's another wet and brown thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But slippery.
SPEAKER_00You know, it was still fun though. Like I had a good time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um you could see the path that people took because it was getting worse.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it literally was.
SPEAKER_01It was getting shittier and shittier. And I I was like, there's gotta be a better way of getting out of the campsite.
SPEAKER_00No. There really wasn't getting out of the arena, there's no good way to do it. If that's if that area's fucked you at it, basically. Yeah. But we got back. Nikki was still buzzing, so we stayed up a bit, had a few beers again, put the fairy lights on. Yeah. Um by this point I think Fred and Kel had already gone to the dog house, I think. Yeah. Um and we just kind of stayed there and chilled for a bit and got a fairly early night, not as early as the night before, but early enough. Mm-hmm. And then I woke up on the Saturday uh the Sunday morning to to you and Fred talking. Because I heard Fred get up first, because I heard him go bloody lovely in the other tent. That was the first thing I heard. Nikki was out cold, that's why I just left her to it. And then I heard you move and then you speak to Fred. I don't know what you were talking about. Me neither. I think you were talking about going to the shows again, and he was like saying, Oh, you've you've gone every day or something like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well Got to, eh? We haven't got to, but Oh I didn't. No, but I just slummed it. But uh, I I need uh I need some clean hot water.
SPEAKER_00I'm a I'm a dirty boy, I don't need I don't need clean water, mate. Gotta keep that gooch clean. I just need beer. That's all I need. Drink a beer, but no um Got up, heard them talking, come out and got involved in some morning festivities, including a well, it was like a we bought these like OT things me and Nikki did to do because we bought a little kettle as well. Yeah. Um and stuff, so we kind of polished pots. Yeah, like me and Nikki kind of thought we'll bring things that are for everyone. Filling. So like we'd got the gazebo, the flag so we could figure out where the fuck we were, and a few other like the kettle and a few other bits in the stove and stuff like that. We bought stuff that everyone could use because it was like, well, we'll bring all the communal stuff, and everyone could just bring shit and chair. So but no, it was it was it was quite fun though, because like in our campsite we had Fred cleaning up everything, and one of the people who was with Connor was sleeping quite a lot at the campsite, and he didn't want to go into the festival grounds too early, which is fair enough.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we get up, happy breakfast, have a nap.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but which is fair enough, but you're out there till midnight, so kind of the rest of us wanted to get going. Um but you know, in true download fashion, we we'd all collected all the rubbish and popped it next to his tent politely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So and then blamed it on him. Pretty much. So via Snapchat. So yeah, it was uh it was one of them, but uh it's still quite funny though. I think I think he took it in good spirits to be fair. But um Maybe. Maybe, who knows? He seemed to anyway, but uh yeah. It's quite fun. There was a lot of lot of campsite shenanigans and uh your battery pack that nearly didn't get loaded because they were like, what is it?
SPEAKER_01Yep. I thought it was uh a generator which requires fuel, but it's not.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, again, more failing of security there. Again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm I'm I was thinking, because I had a dream the other night. You had a dream. Is when I get my new car, get a trailer, I can tow it all up, detach, walk with a trailer in.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if they'll let you do that, mate.
SPEAKER_01Now I'll now I was thinking the barriers that you have to walk down in the queue are not gonna be wide enough.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01So we'd have to figure out a way of lifting it up.
SPEAKER_00Plus the dude, they wouldn't let you in with that anyway. Why not? They just wouldn't, trust me. It's my tent. What the fuck you're just gonna sleep underneath it.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I'm gonna put uh I'm gonna expand it up into the air.
SPEAKER_00Well to be fair, me and Nikki are gonna get some of those like um the platform. Sorry, the I know you guys are listening, but I'm literally trying to draw what I'm talking about. It's like a it's like a a cot. The cots that you put your your air mattresses on is gonna get a double one of them for me and Nikki because we're getting an eight-man tent, aren't we, for next year, me and Nick.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, those, yes. You can just sleep on them anyway, can't you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you can, but I'd rather put the air mattress on top as well, so it's not extra, extra bougie.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if your your current tent would work with that.
SPEAKER_00No, we're not, we're getting a bigger one.
SPEAKER_01You will suffocate by inhaling the material on your face.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, we're not we're not having that tent, we're giving to Chris that tent.
SPEAKER_01So Chris is having that tent. All you'd do is lie down with your sleeping bag. Not even that, just just put a carrier bag on your head, it'll be fine, keeps the water off. And choke to death on the plastic.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01It depends how much.
SPEAKER_00Occupational hazard. We'll put a straw in it and be fine. Jesus Christ. But yeah, um now next year we we're gonna be bringing a an octagonal tent.
SPEAKER_01I've been looking at a cabin. It's a 12-man cabin for one person.
SPEAKER_00For those who obviously are listening, I'm shaking my head at this because it's just it's dame and all over.
SPEAKER_01Because he will he says this, but he's actually gonna do it. I'll bring a can of spray paint and make uh a pathway to the path. Like, no camping here.
SPEAKER_00No. Well, to be fair, I was talking to Nick yesterday actually about where we would camp next year. We've agreed that from where we were, if you took our whole thing, or make down towards you know the where the fence was or where the entryway was that led up the hill. Yeah. You know where the guard tower was. Yep. Take ours and put it down by the fence behind the guard tower, that's where we're gonna go. Yeah. Next year, further down.
SPEAKER_01That's what I was thinking. Yeah, because I was talking about what you said. Because it's still flat enough, but it's closer to the hill, and it's gonna it's c actually closer to the path. Mm-hmm. So it just it makes logical sense. Yeah. As long as it doesn't piss it down because there is a bit of a dip. The only the only downside is you are further away from the toilets. But it's probably quicker to get to the toilets because you haven't got to climb over all the tents.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I didn't really use the toilets that much, I just did bottle piss.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, me too. I had a bag. So, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Pit well piss bottle. Yeah. I was drinking my uh my liquid death and I I was literally filling 500mm cans quite easily. Very easily.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's another thing as well. Make sure you hydrate when you're there, even if you aren't drinking beer, still hydrate because you're gonna need it.
SPEAKER_01Tip break the tab off if you're pissed in it. You don't want to be drinking that again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, this is why I bought little bottles, because then I could track not big enough what I'd peed in.
SPEAKER_01I'll be I'll be feeling like six of these. I ain't got time to keep unscrewing them.
SPEAKER_00Well to be fair, that that that one that we had the that I bought the rum the the uh JD and Coke in that I drank on the first night. Yeah, that two-litre bottle, that was like my main piss bottle.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think next year I'm gonna try and just Just bring those. I'm I'm gonna make one container of piss. Do you want a pizza piss? Do you know that that accordion bottle thing about with the beer in? That holds five litres. It's a good bite.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna get a ten litre version. Ten litres of piss. Oh my god, that's the first album, ten litres of piss. Oh yeah. By five litres of piss.
SPEAKER_01Jesus Christ. That is the plan. I'm gonna try and see if I can fill it up.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, a fair play. But yeah, um Sunday. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.
SPEAKER_01So that oh that so that means my quests are for next year. Get to the front of the stage, fill up ten litres of piss. Let's see what else we can add. To be fair shooting in a bag has already been checked off.
SPEAKER_00My my checklist for next year is if the wife is pregnant, get guard her with my life, make sure she's alright. Two, if not, don't go as ham as I did last year because I actually want to remember more of the stuff that happened. Yeah. Instead of trying to remember it in hindsight because it's fucking hard. Yeah. Um drink more, do other things less, um, and try and do it on a budget as well. Try and bring more stuff to cook, like tinned stuff. Yeah. Could do. Because I I don't want to spend as much money as I did. I just want to buy merch and that's it.
SPEAKER_01Figure out a way of um not having to heat it running back to the car for gas.
SPEAKER_00Well, the way around that is bring water and do the boil in the bag mails. That was what I was thinking of doing next year. MRA. MRA.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, military rations. Oh yeah, yeah. It's got like all the preheated stuff in there.
SPEAKER_00That's what I meant, like you just go and it just heats it up. Yeah. Yeah, no, definitely. That's what I'm thinking, is try and do it on a budget so I don't spend as much money as I would on the food stall so I actually have a meal. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I mean I didn't buy much from the food stalls, probably brought three meals.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we did as well. But the problem with that was because we'd literally been eating pot noodles, crisps, and oats. I think that's why when I got back I got sick. Alright. Because I hadn't eaten enough. It was cold, it was damp, it was wet. In a field. I think it just caught up with me because my immune system was like low as fuck. So I think that's what caused me to be sick after the festival because I was dang for like a good week.
SPEAKER_02Alright.
SPEAKER_00Like I lost my voice completely. I couldn't talk. I was like this for like a week. Just lost it. And I didn't do much singing either.
SPEAKER_01So Yeah, because I I I brought these OT chocolate biscuit things for breakfast. I had that before I went for a shower, because I was shaking, I was so hungry. Had a shower, come back, had a pot of noodle. Because I was starving from the shower. It's a fucking hike. And then had a nap. Woke up, had a pot noodle. Number two. And then we went up to the arena. Yeah. And then uh chilled out. I wasn't even hungry till probably eight o'clock.
SPEAKER_00It was about eight o'clock, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then that that was it. That was pretty much me for the night. That was all full.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, to be fair, I mean like we we'd done it before, obviously, so we knew what the deal was. Whereas last year we had a lot of excess food that we bought back, whereas this year we didn't. I think it was because we were spending more time in the campsite. We went with far less money than we did the year before. But because of that, we ended up eating more at the campsite than we would have done last year. So I think if we eat the right kinds of food instead of snacking stuff, that'll put us in better stead and we won't be spending shitloads of money on stuff. And we don't buy beer anyway when we're in the arena.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I don't buy a single drink.
SPEAKER_00No, neither did I. I never do when I go because I'm just I'm not paying like other than the one that came with my meal.
SPEAKER_01Which is non-alcoholic anyway.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. So and it stops you from being dehydrated as well. Yeah. So that's the other bonus to that. Um the Sunday morning, pretty much standard as the rest were. Um Sunday morning, was this the last this is the last proper day before the Monday morning when we packed up? Oh, he doke. So Sunday morning got up more the same as it has been the rest of the days, you know, just chilled, but I think it was not raining on the Sun yeah, it wasn't raining on Sunday, was it? It was quite a nice day. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um actually we had a pretty nice night as well, didn't we? Yeah, it did clear up eventually. Because we had some photos of the the sunset.
SPEAKER_00No, that was on the first night. That was Wednesday. I took those pictures.
SPEAKER_01Ah, yes.
SPEAKER_00The one that's on my Facebook. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. That was on the uh calm before the storm. Yeah, exactly, and then this was the calm after the storm um in the Wangley, it was on the Sunday, but the first band that we went in to see as a group would have been Kerry King. That was the first band that we went to see. Don't remember. That's because when we went to see Kerry King, Parkway were playing the secret set. Oh shit, yeah, as a partway. So as we walked over, he started playing Rain and Blood, which was Oh yes, which we stopped to record.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I know this song, but it sounds funny.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it didn't sound like Slayer. It didn't it sounded like Slayer. A Slayer cover band with Kerry King in it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, it wasn't as refined, and that was kind of like I was like, yeah, I've seen it live before when it was actually Slayer playing it, and it's like it was a school talent show cover that kind of No, it was like a very good band that would play WV1 first cover band level. It was like that. Yeah. It was good, but it wasn't Slayer. Yeah. It was like Slayer like features Kerry King. But his stuff was good. Um, for the couple songs that we stayed for before Wandering Over to Pikwe Drive. Which we managed to squeeze in for. Couldn't get in the tent though, we got close. Well we did we managed to get in in the end. No just on the edge.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but we weren't actually underneath the canopy. It was on the edge. Yeah, it was close enough, we could still see. Just about. Um yeah, they were. I could actually see them. I could sit on my phone, and then some people behind me said, Oh thanks, I've got a good view now. Thank you, iPhone 15 Pro Max.
SPEAKER_00No, I I could see. But um they were good, they weren't as good as last year though. Um probably because it was in the tent and I couldn't see as much as I wanted to. They should go main stage. Yeah, but they never do with a secret sets, they're always somewhere random. Um stick them on the floor then in the main in the main area.
SPEAKER_01Put them on put them on the fairy's wheel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Perfect. Fucking spin the shit around you can. Yeah, just pause them at the top and just let them go. Sort it.
SPEAKER_00Just don't deliver me, it just goes nuts. Yeah. Deliver me, just spinning like a crazy.
SPEAKER_01Epilepsy warning.
SPEAKER_00After that, it was bowling for soup, which is the second time I've seen bowling for soup.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, swap.
SPEAKER_00Swap. Um the lead guitarist wasn't there. I think he I think he had an operation, didn't he? Or something? Yeah, something like that. He's back in the States. Yeah, so he wasn't there, and then uh Weedush came out with him. Indeed. Um, and it was all round good fun. I mean, I I enjoyed it again. A lot of nostalgia vibes for this festival. I think they were going for like nostalgia. I think that was the overarching theme for most of the bands for me, because a lot of them I listened to when I was younger and then moved away from.
SPEAKER_01I'll call it alternatives.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there was a lot of alt pop here. Like if you look at the the lineup, there's a lot of alt pop on this one, which I didn't see any of it because I was like, no, it's not my vibe. Fair enough that they're there and they're trying to like change the dynamic, but not for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There were people there that you wanted to see, just not in the band that the you want to see them in. Like Slipknot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, Slipknot were good last year, but his voice was fucked.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The only reason that I would actually I didn't even see I didn't see Cory Teller, but I didn't if I wanted if I if I was gonna see him, I would love him to play SpongeBob. That is it.
SPEAKER_00He did.
SPEAKER_01That fuck. He did. Fuck. That's what he does. That's what I wanted to see. That's what he does, man. That's that is the only thing I would have done to see him for. Sorry, he could have said he comes out, plays Spongebob, goes, done. I'm happy.
SPEAKER_00However, Corey Taylor was on at the same time as the next band, which was Sum 41, which was the last ever UK show. Yeah. Which you're not gonna miss that for Corey Taylor doing SpongeBob, come on. SpongeBob, yes.
SPEAKER_01No, one song for an entire set, yeah. Nah no, no. To be honest, Sun 41, it he looked like he had done tons, metric tons.
SPEAKER_00He looked like a casualty of society, yeah, he did, he looked fucked. No wonder they're stopping, like he literally didn't eat I didn't even recognise him when he came out. I was like, fuck mate, you look like shit, man.
SPEAKER_01He looks like a crack addict.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he does look a bit rough, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_01Homeless person that's addicted to crack, walking well, not even walking, coming up to you, saying, I'll suck your dick for a ball of crack. That is what he looked like. No, no offence. No offence.
SPEAKER_00Love it, love it. The little no offence at the end. It was good though. It was good, like they did say he needs to look after himself more. Well, I think that's probably why they're knocking it on the end, to be honest, because he's he's he's clearly let himself go. I mean to be honest, like they recorded one more album before this. In in what he mate mates with um Ollie.
SPEAKER_01Maybe since the both lock a bit of drug.
SPEAKER_00Bringing the ketamine. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01He's off that now, isn't he, anyway? He said he's he went back on it um during lockdown. Did he? Yep. He said he was bored, so he went back on drugs.
SPEAKER_00I mean, fair. I did a lot of drinking during lockdown. I was basically a piss artist during lockdown.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my uh where I live, I'm in a flat and communal bins were just full of cans. Every time the bin men came and emptied the y you go. Just give them a knock. That's all that's our that's our thing.
SPEAKER_00You can just hear the can go. To be fair, it was funny because when I because I live in a house now, which is where we're recording this from, when I lived on my own, um before I met Matt Waff, um I was living in this like flat which you used to come over to a couple times. But it was funny because whenever I used to take my bins down, all you could hear from the bins was fucking clanking all the way down in the lift and just clink clink cling, and I'd be like walking out, and it'd be people coming in, and you could hear this fucking clanking across the lobby, and they'd see me, hear it, and nod at them, and I'd go, you alright? Just carrying these pins full of like cans and bottles and shit.
SPEAKER_01I'd I'd have raised my eyebrow quickly, give them a smirk look and a little nod.
SPEAKER_00Nah, just give them the you alright? What are these like non-plus?
SPEAKER_01What are these? Basically, yeah. Little bit of this.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, some 41 were good. Again, some parts of the sound seemed to get carried away. Again, at least from what I can remember, it did get carried away. Which again is unfortunate. Um now I would have gone and seen Machine Ed, which Fred did do, and I wanted to, but I'd rather have seen Limp Biscuit. So I stuck with Biscuit. Now yeah, I could have probably gone over between that and Avenged and seen a bit, but I kind of wanted to stay for Avenged because again Nikki wanted to see him and I said I'd stay with her for him. Yep. Which also ties me on to the Black Dahlia murder as well. No.
SPEAKER_01We weren't even there.
SPEAKER_00We weren't even there, but we'll get to that in a second, because shit mate. I regret that's another one that I regret doing.
SPEAKER_01Didn't he didn't he say like didn't he come on and go through and a whale over time over there or something? Yeah, he did, yeah. From the main stage.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he did. So Lip Biscuit came on, they were fucking great as well. They played break stuff twice. So at the start and at the end, which was like holy shit. Uh-huh. Okay. Then just Fred Durstman is so cool. He just come out, didn't didn't really like look much like anything, just came out in his fucking jersey, did what he did, and fucked off. Like they they were peak for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it looked like uh OAP Florida man. No, um Mexican gangster.
SPEAKER_00Yeah?
SPEAKER_01Named Jose. Jose.
SPEAKER_00What the Jose is there? Jose Mayo. Shark stuff! Nah, honestly, they were so good. Like they were definitely one of the highlights for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Of the whole last episode. One of my top three. 100%.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But um yeah, so after that, Avenged came on. Now I like the new stuff. Okay. I like it personally. But I think for download they shouldn't have played as much of it as they did.
SPEAKER_01If it's new, then play a couple songs, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. But you're at download, everyone wants to hear your biggest song, so play them.
SPEAKER_01It's that new that not a lot of people are gonna get around to listening to that.
SPEAKER_00Plus, it sounds completely different from what they've done before because Carnot's like kicking off. Yeah. You know, like I I like some of the songs like nobody and um and what is it like the the G O D songs, like those three are really good. But half of the set was the new stuff and literally people walking away. So I think they kind of misjudged what people were there to see. Yeah. So plus they've headlined the festival before as well. That was the they were the first headliner I ever saw at download was Avenge Sevenfold. So and the camera effects were crap, to be uh to be honest. Yeah, I don't know if that was deliberate. I think it was looked, did it? Yeah, they've used that functioning.
SPEAKER_01They've used that um that AI thing where i you film something and it replaces it with like zombies and skeletons and stuff. Okay. Which was quite interesting for the fact that it was doing it live. Because usually we do stuff like that, it it has to render it and doesn't use do it on the fly, so they must have had some good equipment there.
SPEAKER_00Well they do all NFTs and shit, don't they, as well, they're events and fold and all that stuff. They've got like NFTs that fans can get like special access to them and all this shit, and they got like season tickets where like if you buy an NFT you can go to all the gigs for like X amount of money.
SPEAKER_01No, thank you.
SPEAKER_00I mean scan. No well, no, not really. I mean, if you're into the band, then fair enough, it's an interesting way of doing it. It's kind of like what Metallica do with the um I think they've got something like called the the black snake tickets or something like that, whether you get in the snake pit for every gig, but you can go to every single Metallica gig that they do. Alright. It's like a season ticket for like a football thing, but just they do it in different ways. But I think the problem was, like I say, they should have played more of the older songs rather than relying so heavily on the new stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Even the same system didn't like it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so the one song that me and Nikki actually wanted to see was Nightmare, and as soon as they got to the bit just for the solo, wasn't it? It was just after the solo when it like kicks back in again. The whole stage just died, the whole thing all the lights would kick off, everything went black. Um it was about another five, ten minutes, I think, before that came back on. By which time they stopped playing Nightmare, they didn't go back to it, they didn't finish it off, they just left it, and then they started playing a um Little Piece of Heaven, which makes up for it, kinda. But again, it was I don't know what happened this year, I think something was up with that main stage, yeah. Because it just didn't sound right, it didn't function right.
SPEAKER_01Been flaky all all week, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like that I had more fun at the second stage, the second stage stuff on point though, but it was more on point and the vibe was different, yeah. Like it was more like a party vibe, whereas over on main stage it was kind of like a let's just chill. Whereas last year it was kind of both were similar. Yeah. Like they both had a bit of a party, chilled party vibe last year, whereas this year it's like one was the party, one was the chilled vibe, and it was kind of like okay.
SPEAKER_01What's the big tent called in the uh In the Doodar? In the doodar. What in the village? In the village.
SPEAKER_00In District X. Yeah. Uh the den. Or are you on about the white plant bias?
SPEAKER_01Um the one we we went to when we saw um Slay Doggy.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the uh the Doros.
SPEAKER_01That should be the same that's that is the same that's the size of tent that should be for the death mail stuff.
SPEAKER_00I agree. I agree. I think that that stage Too small. It it's it's not small in terms of other festivals, but for download it's too small. Like, even though it is the smallest stage, it's too small. I think it needs to be a little bigger. Twice the size. Maybe half again, I reckon. Half again, I think.
SPEAKER_01When uh what uh when Doodar Dingly Dobs, um The Secret Set. Oh, Parkway. Yeah, I didn't even know it wasn't even Parkway. Whoever it was whoever was on after Hanaby over that side.
SPEAKER_00I can't find it. Oh, you mean make them suffer?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The you could have felt too tense.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean to be fair though, like the band that I do regret not seeing, as I was mentioning earlier, was Black Dialia Murder, because they literally and uh Crystal Leg. Fuck me. The sound though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was louder than the the mainstage.
SPEAKER_00It was louder than Avenged were because they were playing the new stuff and it went quite, and all you could do was just like speed executed perfectly.
SPEAKER_01I was just like, oh my god, I wish I was over there, but I'm so tired. Yeah, we all just looked sat in our chairs and we were just looking at turned our heads around like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, none of us none of us looked at the mainstage and all just turned our heads and was like, fuck, we wish we were over there. Like if I had that little bit more energy, I would have gone. If I had grip. Yeah, you had no grip, I'd run out of fucks to give. I was just like, I'm done. I'm done. I want to get this avenge set out of the way, crawl back to the tent and go to sleep, which is exactly what I did do when it finished.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if it if that tent was hundred steps away, it'd have taken me 600 steps to get there. Yeah. That's how much less grip I had.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that last that last trudge up the hill. to get back was sloppy it was ungodly it was just not not a good time no at all but yeah well I think now what we should probably do is discuss the bands from the Saturday and the Sunday I think or before that would you prefer to discuss the toilets and the food before we go into wrapping it up depends if anyone's eating right now yeah that's true if you're eating right now stop or finish your food very quickly so we'll give you some time to do that so we'll talk about food since we're on a subject unless you're eating ass then you're fine yeah keep going keep going you you you got it um so food wise I kind of didn't really go as adventurous as I wanted to because I kind of thought well the weather is awful and the cue for the toilets is going to be even worse which it was so I'm not gonna risk it so over the entire festival I had two burgers from the burger and Chip shack yeah which was bias um on that side that we sit on literally right next to us um not great no no the chips were not nice at all they were very stale Nikki had a hot dog and immediately just didn't want the hot dog like she took two bites out of it and didn't finish it.
SPEAKER_01Alright um I'm pretty sure that was the only place I ate from apart from the one in the uh in the little Tony area what you call it. Distrotex.
SPEAKER_00Yeah yeah I think yeah yeah well we had that I thought my burger was okay the second one I had from there was better the next day um and then I had to walk all the way over to the other side of the festival to get pizza queued for about 20 minutes to get the pizza and I had to walk all the way back with open tops on the pizzas now one the pizzas were ridiculously overpriced for what they were I think they were about 15 quid each yeah fuck that those pizzas and they tasted like ass. What were they like nine inch? Probably like 10 10 eleven they weren't very big yeah tasted like ass the bottom was completely burned and how thick was the crust not thick at all so it's a thin thin crust yeah they didn't even have an option to have thick crust either it was just your pizza fuck off it it's four shreds of cheese well it wasn't even that they just like put mozzarella dollops randomly on it so it wasn't even like consistent coverage so not great on the food front this year um as I said the second day burger that I had was better that was nicer than the one before and the pizza my main complaint with that was one butt bottom not enough cheese covering and the last thing that annoyed me was they knew that people were walking across the festival why would you give people a cardboard box that's got an open top on it that doesn't have a lid because if you drop that shit that's 15 quid literally in the mud yep luckily that didn't happen I managed to finesse and bullshit my way again just dying down and eat that shit. Nah man not a chance um but that was sort of my take on food not great a bit bland but next year I think what I'm gonna do is closer to the festival I'm gonna look at what food vendors I have and if I am going to have meals then I might just have two while I'm there and try and save the money and do what I said earlier in the podcast and try and bring my own stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yes um I did have so I I had that burger that burger place twice maybe three times two being a burger one being hot dog no problems other than carrying three items across mud with two hands um and then the other thing is I had the Gyoza for the Greek which was nice really nice refreshing good bit of a price what it is not not as big as I wanted it to be it was gone in like three bites but it was it was nice.
SPEAKER_00And how much did you pay for that? Can't remember fair I was gonna say like I think next year. It's gonna be a bit of tenner I think I'm gonna be a bit more of a dick next year about the food because if they give me a small portion I'm just gonna like do I've literally just paid like twelve, thirteen fifteen quid for this give me my money's worth at least don't be stingy cunt just give me what I paid for because I get it that they need the money to fund what they do but and you're always going to pay more at festivals but at the same time but why is it more expensive at festivals?
SPEAKER_01Because they have to pay for ground?
SPEAKER_00Well yeah they have to pay for the ground which I get and I understand but at the same time if I can save but they could lower the ground rent? Well exactly I mean download surely makes enough money from apparent sold out um events it wasn't sold out this year. I'm sorry it wasn't no chance was it sold out I think they just lowered the capacity to get it closed but it wasn't sold out because people were still buying tickets on the morning off yeah so don't one of one don't lie about that last year it was sold out like it was ridiculously busy but it wasn't oversold last year which people still say to this day it was it was not it was not oversold they wouldn't have been able to put it on if it was so yeah but just just think how lucky you are not to be having a uh Yorkshire pudding yeah definitely definitely no Yorkes yeah speaking of York's yeah toilets and lots of shit yeah lots and lots of shit this weekend lots of liquid shit mostly because of the Yorkes as we mentioned before yeah and food poisoning yeah yeah lots of that plenty of that yeah they uh had to close down two Yorkshire pudding vendors two one where was it I think it was up in District X one of them was and I don't know where the second one was it was probably the right hand side of the arena yeah the one down there I think that was the other one that got towards the one on the left hand side by the toilets was fine right next to the toilets it's fine it's fine which you know you you eat and you're literally already in the queue for a shit so shit and go it's almost like they predicted it almost man I mean Christ speaking of shits yeah one night I was going for a shit and you know I'm looking opening doors checking who's got toilet paper and then uh walked in and just seen a nice pile of shit on the back of the rim on the seat. Yeah that sounds about right I mean to be fair one of the ones that I went in jabba the hook literally I was gonna say jabba the hook the one that I went in literally like jabba the hook's head was poking out of the toilet itself yeah and I went in I just looked over the door and I went fine I guess I guess I'm I'm gonna have to just deal with this that's gonna touch my ring I know it didn't it didn't I made sure it didn't but or my marbles basically I think because they were so unprepared for the weather they didn't bother cleaning out the toilets or at least this is what I hope they didn't bother cleaning out the toilets as much as they should have done and because of that there was just a torrent of shit and piss everywhere mixed in with the mud.
SPEAKER_01No Yeah which I was in crocs exactly but you didn't get wet no but the mud that was stuck to my Crocs I don't want to think of what how what percentage of that was actually mud.
SPEAKER_00Yeah yeah it wasn't good again like I mean by day one the toilets were already overflowing the urinals they were already leaking piss over and that's on day one.
SPEAKER_01I I decided to clog myself up I was that I did not want to go for to the loot at all.
SPEAKER_00I went for one crap while I was there and I immediately was like I'm not doing that again for the rest of the time that I'm here because I just I can't deal with it. Yeah I literally held my shit in as much as I can did not piss at all in the arena um I did do one or two wee's in the arena but yeah me too I deliberately didn't drink before I went into the arena I had I had a minimal hydration midway that was it yeah exactly and then uh after the clean the toilets in the morning I went for a shit and then that was it.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Didn't need a piss because I'd already filled a couple of cans.
SPEAKER_00No exactly um but yeah that that was my uh on my way to my shower yeah I just I don't understand what happened because it was a similar scenario last year except you know why can't I put some kind of grated material in in the toilet area what do you mean like something you can piss in?
SPEAKER_01No some kind of like plastic flooring no like grids.
SPEAKER_00Well you'd think they would because that would stop it from spreading but they don't.
SPEAKER_01But it it is something they need to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well they do it for the uh the water areas the water troughs that's got a great area yeah y y you you need some great great platform but even that apparently the water was making people sick as well oh I didn't touch it. I did to brush my teeth but that was about it I didn't swallow any of it I just spat it back out. I'll I'll brush my teeth with um liquid death well the first day I brushed my teeth at the trough yeah but then after I heard that because people were saying people are getting sick.
SPEAKER_01People people were washing their like shoes and stuff in it. Yeah which is contaminated with people's other people's shit and piss so what I didn't know so much gonorrhea was in that water.
SPEAKER_00Instead what I did was just did the old classic of used beer to rinse out the toothpaste. That's it at the end. But the toilet scenario in 2023 was even worse because what happened was in the arena you know from where the first stage was to the second stage that dip where there was all the fencing and there was all those like food stalls. Yeah last year there wasn't food as many food stalls there was a toilet there.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00And what happened was because the queues were so large for the men's toilets and because the men can't go in the women's toilets you ended up with a massive fucking queue of bloats and by the time they got in they ended up pissing up the fence and the piss went out into the thing and because it was hot you literally had steaming piss for the whole festival time last year. It just smelt like steaming piss sorry that's uh my next door name was Dog because we do have the window open which Damon is now shutting and he shut it there we go. Yeah so essentially what you ended up with was a torrent of steaming piss last year and this year again. Good band name yeah what a piece of piss so literally just more more of the same really as last year just more bad toilets but not gonna end this on a negative note so what we will do is we will discuss the best bands for Saturday and Sunday so I'll hand it over to Damon to take it away. Right Saturday 15th of June hell of a day I'm gonna need to look at your phone though for this because I can't remember the fucking band so ignore us about the baby metal comments we made in the last one because they're on the Saturday not the Sunday yeah sorry the Saturday not the Friday um now I'm looking at this I'm remembering more of what actually happened so I'll let you start on this one okay um oh what what did I do okay offspring they they were good I enjoyed them uh glad I got to see them uh Ed Shikari that was that was I love that I love Ed Shikari for me the way he just fell into the mud yeah what an absolute legend that was a highlight definitely of the whole festival that was a funny moment oh yeah sadly Baby Metal got cut short they would have been an amazing band to see if it had a full set would like to see more from them um but oh yeah I don't really want to see Bambi Thug but I never got around to that I was also this is another day I was heart too high um oh yeah Pantora didn't get to see it then wanted to Pantare yeah Panteray Pantare um bleed from within I caught a little bit I wish I'd have gone over I caught a little bit not much though I was there for like five minutes I didn't go over yeah uh sil see uh Silverstein I wanted to see them but never got to see them either I don't actually remember seeing any of these on this list uh um I seen Enchari offspring for letter boy uh internet consciousness uh that's not a gun boy that's just him yeah exactly uh Frank Carter and the rattles no I didn't see them did not slaughter did I see slaughter I think I did see Slaughter but from a distance no you didn't because they were on the same time as Baby Mel yes yes that makes yes because Fred was over there yes that's right yes that they didn't stop for that long that's right yes um I don't actually remember any anything else really that day I pretty much just sat down and stayed at the apex and that's all I can remember. I don't have a top band maybe Enchikari baby metal offspring some kind of variation of that so for me on a Saturday I'm gonna go from the bottom the band that I wanted to see but didn't see was Fear Factory and the reason why I didn't go see Fear Factory was because two reasons one I was absolutely fucking knackered by that point and two the wife was having too much fun at Fallout Boy so I was like I'm gonna stay with her because I want to be part of this um so that's my missed band um I would have loved to have seen same with holding absence I'd have loved to have gone and seen that I don't remember who was on at the same time um this this is actually the day where I had like seven biscuits Mindu one does the job yeah I remember this day you were you were off on another planet I think the reason why we didn't see that many bands is because we weren't that bothered it was we were all knackered and it was aware and we were just like look we're just gonna wait it out until the bands we want to see come on. Every time I was walking through the mud my shoes were getting like sucked off I think nice I think we uh I think we got to the arena at about what was it two uh maybe about half one two ish something like that because we were like I think it was just after the Wuna wasn't it yes it was um so for me highlights for this day offspring were pretty good into shikari were probably second for me in terms of highlight like you said jiving in the mud legendary great sound although some parts did dip out and that pissed me off again. Yeah the dub sections on into shikari did not hit as much as they needed to no nothing like uh prodigy last year that went off yeah last year um Fallout Well were good um Patrick's runs were great when he was like doing vocal runs but it's not my bag I I do get why people like Fallout well there's a few classic songs that they played that I was like yeah man um again not really for me baby metal it was a shame Pantera what can I say I've seen Pantera live that's probably the highlight of the whole festival for me is seeing Pantera live um I would have liked to have seen Bleed from within but I was too knackered and again the rest of the day was it was too rained off to go to be honest so that was a very short run day for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah me too um do you want me to start Sunday? Yeah you can go to Sunday one of the one of my highlights I'd say so for me Sunday most missed band that I would have loved to see was Black Diala again.
SPEAKER_00Oh we heard them from where we were we heard them though while the they were going hard yeah they fucking went for it and I was like I could go but I'm that tired at this point that it was already overpairing the actual main stages like Avengers were playing their new stuff and it was very quiet and you could just hear like you could shoot yourself from like over the other side I was like good god I was like they're going for it um again Shadow of Intent I would have liked to have seen them but again I just I was too tired. Yeah I was too tired I think next year I need to take some like energy drinks or something that's just gonna give me that kick. Electric call boy weren't there no sadly not I wish I'd have seen Machinehead yeah me too but I picked Avenged over them there's always next time though I think for me on this day the only real highlights I can pick out Limp Biscuit's probably the highlight for this day um just because it's Limp Bit chocolate stuffish you know what I'm saying which is one of them you gotta love that. Some 41 it was sad to see him go but again I couldn't hit half the fucking set because the sound was crap.
SPEAKER_01Yeah and he and he looked like he had done a lot of drugs.
SPEAKER_00He looked like he'd just given up to be honest like his body was like he looked he looked like a casualty of society. Yeah I I I always thought now that I've looked it kind of looks like a bobblehead his body was just disintegrated from the older drugs he's done yeah he did look a bit deathly didn't he poor dude well saddle flipped button for super fun yeah and they had Wheatus as well that was quite cool. Yeah that was good Kerry King playing fucking Rain and Blood as we're walking over to see Parkway Drive yes yes yes I've seen Slayer on the farewell tour so I'm not that bummed that he did it but I remember this we stopped in the mud and we covered that we did hold on a minute yeah I was like hang on what's going on over there but it was it was weird because it didn't sound like Slayer even though it was Kerry King doing it it did not sound like Slayer at all so there's something in that click that they have that makes it work. And I'm not just talking about vocals I mean the whole sound of it it didn't it sounded like a very good cover band with Kerry King in it playing that song. But it was still cool to hear another highlight for me Parquet always great to see Parkway I know a lot of people People didn't really give a fuck about seeing them.
SPEAKER_01Um tell that to other people crowding in the tent.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. We were we were some of them, but it was great. And I have my own thoughts on why they did that and what might be happening next year. But we'll talk about that again when we get there. Um so that for a future episode. I would have liked to have seen Die Art, but it's not the same without CJ. I've seen Die Art three times.
SPEAKER_02Nice.
SPEAKER_00Always CJ if he's not there, it's not Viart in my opinion. Bit of a hot take on that on that one, but um yeah, and that's pretty much it for my download, so I'll hand it back over to this guy.
SPEAKER_01Cool. So yeah. My I'll tell you my hollow for that day was definitely Limbiscuit. He he was just such a legend.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you didn't he just look so cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Cool as a cucumber. He was in his element, yeah. And when somebody uh got injured or something in the crowd, he stopped everything, made sure there was alright. Oh, was that what it was? And he said, if everything's alright, stick your middle finger up. I was like, what a legend. What a absolute legend.
SPEAKER_00You know the guy he was talking to? That's the legendary security guard. He's the guy who like headbangs and stuff that download, don't I? He's an absolute ledge, that guy.
SPEAKER_01Jeez. Um what else? I didn't re that day I didn't leave the main stage again. I was just marsh I did not have the shoes to to do what I needed to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna say, don't you?
SPEAKER_01Bring more shoes.
SPEAKER_00Bring webbies. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Let's put some screws through my crocs so the bodge crocs. Yeah. As long as I don't step on anyone's feet, I'll be fine. Then again, I think next year I've definitely gotta go towards the front of the stage.
SPEAKER_00Well, I was gonna say, like Pantera, we were packed in like sardines. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'll I'm main stage right at the front next year, as long as they put on some decent bands.
SPEAKER_00Well, we'll get to that because there is one band who might possibly have been confirmed from a source that I know very, really close to us.
SPEAKER_01But overall, I'm gonna say Hannah B number one soft play number two and uh who should be number three Mr Biscuit himself and staffy that that is gonna be my three favourites for the entire festival.
SPEAKER_00Mine are slightly different. I think for me, Pantera's number one. Has to be because like I said earlier, I never thought I would see Pantera play live again after what happened. Um the unfortunate circumstances that happened there. Phil saying, fucking great, literally, like Jesus Christ. Like Carnage got some video because I didn't really record that much, I only recorded floods because I was like, I gotta watch this, and it started raining. Yeah, that moment when Zach started playing the solo and it started to rain, I was like, oh my god, I thought this is what I was hoping for, and it's happened. Um yeah, magic, pure magic. Queens, second, um, purely just because of childhood nostalgia and wanting to see them and experience it. And lastly, like yourself, Mr. Biscuit. Yeah, for sure, because just you would get the MLG goat. He would get MVP of the festival, like overall, if everyone was like, who was your favourite, most people probably say Limp Biscuit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Because just yeah, such a character. Yeah. And he I don't know why he needs to look like an old man from Florida, but he is what he is.
SPEAKER_00Just a bit of fun, isn't it? Yeah. But no, to be fair, like yeah, those moments there, those three that I've just said are just like those three us being rounding the campsite and and seeing the sunset on that first night, that for me perfectly summarises my download 2024. Like those five well, there's more moments in there than those, but those five sections represent what I think of it. The sunset, the chilling at camp, having a laugh, yeah, and those three bands, those moments that are just like burned into my brain, just like seeing Metallica last year. Like I've seen Metallica before, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01I just had an amazing thought. What what would be a really good band to perform at the same on the same stage in the same time not the same time, but either before or after Limbiscuit, good Charlotte. Ooh that. Ooh I like that. That that vibe I like that that vibe would just like carry it on. That'd be beautiful. Hopefully next year.
SPEAKER_00We'll get to that. I know I keep saying it, but we will get to that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I think we should give this a uh finado for the time being.
SPEAKER_00Well, we will call episode two here. Yes. And we will speak to you in the next one where we discuss our predictions for next year. Yeah. So that will be episode three. Indeed. If you've not already listened, go back and check out our part one to download festival 2024. Yeah. Where we talk through getting there, the arrival the bit before Thursday and Friday day, Damon's Expeditions, and my cold, cynical approach of things. And um, yeah, we'll see you in the next one, guys. Take care.
SPEAKER_01Haddy all the time.
