Train For A Great Life

Effort Is Contagious

Jay Rhodes Episode 38
Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome back to another episode of Train for a Great Life. My friend and track and field mentor back in the day had a saying that effort is contagious, and what he meant by that was that we were never allowed to complain during the depths of a workout. When it's hurting. The last thing you want to do is another rep when you're on interval six of eight and you know how bad these next three are going to be. But it's time to crank the effort.

Speaker 1:

Negative thoughts are racing hell. I'm sure they are, I know they are for me. You want to quit, you want to give up, you want to strip the bar and go lighter just to get it done or cut the distance of the last run. But you're not allowed to complain because the second that you do it starts to to bring everybody down. But the inverse is also true. If you're in the depths and everything is negative and it feels like there's battery acid traveling through your body, if you're there and you hear someone besides you say something like time for the money reps, or it's time to get it, or a personal favorite from my track coach of that same era only one more after the next two. When you hear that, and when they start pushing, when it gets tough, what happens? So do you?

Speaker 1:

You've been in the gym long enough to see this. You probably experienced it yourself. When someone is just on their last legs and they don't strip the bar, they don't chop the reps. Maybe even they have a few reps to go by the time the time cap hits and they don't strip the bar, they don't chop the reps. Maybe even they have a few reps to go by the time the time cap hits and they keep going.

Speaker 1:

That is some energy. There's something special about it. When I see it, I know how bad that hurts and despite giving everything that person has, they're giving me energy, and everyone around them too. I feel like I could run through a brick wall when I see it. I want to be that person every time I step into the gym, the one that just gives off contagious effort. I don't think I succeed in it every day, but that's not the point. I want you to think about being that person when you walk into the gym too Not necessarily getting to step two of lifting others up, but never complaining, because that's where it starts. All complaining is is a way of connecting with others, and there are much better ways to do it. See you in the gym.
