Train For A Great Life

Open Magic Week 1 - Grit & Growth

Jay Rhodes Episode 51
Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome back to another episode of Train for a Great Life. We're talking about the Open CrossFit, open Outlaw and Trumeral Open Week 1, and the Open Magic. So we're through Week 1, and it's going as expected. It brought out the magic. We never know what the workout's going to be ahead of time, and we don't need to. When you put a bunch of people in a scenario of caring about something a little bit more and supporting each other a little bit more, amazing stuff happens. This past week there were no huge first moments like hitting a first muscle up or someone hitting a lift after missing it a few times. Open week one was all about grit. So open week one was all about grit.

Speaker 1:

After we'd wrapped up and headed over to Mustangs for dinner, denise and her husband showed up and sat at the end of our table. First of all, I love that she is in her first open and showing up for the social element afterward, and I love even more that she's brought her husband to share that with her. Just show up is not just about the gym. So we got chatting about the workout, of course, and she mentioned three things that are hallmarks of why this event is so special and so nice to hear from someone in their first week of it. First, it was just how this was most definitely not a normal day the energy, the excitement, camaraderie, all of it. Second, it was just how she pushed herself. She decided she was going to go harder and just try to hold a pace longer. It wasn't a normal day. And lastly and I think this is my favorite she did full burpees instead of scaled burpees, and that was a big deal for her. And not only that, but she added well, I guess I can't default to those anymore.

Speaker 1:

That's what the open does. It levels you up, and it does it in different ways. You might be feeling exactly what Denise is. You may have tried a heavier dumbbell and realized that you're stronger than you thought, and there's no reason not to grab that one the next time the workout calls for it. Maybe you're comfortable with all the movements and you just decided you're going to go for it and surprise yourself with the score. There's a few of those that come to mind. It levels you up in your mind of what you're capable of. You may even be disappointed with your result, and that can be incredibly motivating too. You wouldn't feel those same feelings quite the same way on an average day and it can cause you to prep better and eat better, sleep better, get your mind in a better place.

Speaker 1:

Before the next week. I had something creep up on me in terms of motivation that I wasn't really expecting. I all but missed last year's Open. It was a season of sickness. Leonardo was two and a half years old and you know of course you're expecting some stuff to come home from daycare, but I just couldn't shake it. Between January and May of last year I had strep throat three times and a throat virus twice. The virus was worse because I couldn't take an antibiotic and just had to let it play out.

Speaker 1:

The first week of the open I tried to act like it just wasn't going to affect me, and that ended terribly. The second week I missed entirely during one of my four-day stretches on the couch. Second week, I missed entirely during one of my four-day stretches on the couch. And the third week I set a plan to be very conservative and just enjoy my experience and not be dead on my feet. I had Lacey and Leonardo there watching and it was special, and I executed that plan 10 out of 10, but it was still so far from my best.

Speaker 1:

So this year I was kind of missing that feeling. I haven't trained any differently but I haven't been sick and so I can actually set some expectations. And when I start doing that the nerves creep in and I'm ready to be in that last five minutes and hurting, but just staying steadfast and working through it. I miss those feelings. I'm looking forward to more of them later this week. I want to congratulate everyone who showed up for week one. There is a reason that we don't ask you if you want to be on a team and participate. Most people would shy away from the unknown and sit the first year out, and that's not how we do things here. See you in the gym.
