Train For A Great Life

The Do Good Challenge & The Ripple Effect

Jay Rhodes Episode 53
Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome back to another episode of Train for a Great Life. This is going to be another open related topic. So within the intramural open that we run to repeat and just they always bring out such good. So the first week we always do something like a little kind of more fun, more silly. We want people to not have a problem or have any sort of feelings of anxiety just putting themselves out there. And you might still have those feelings, but when you see other people do it, hopefully it lessens those a little bit. The second and third week we go more impactful, more maybe away from silly, right. So the second week, this is one that we've done for years. We don't do it every year, but it's really hard not to. And it's the do good challenge and that's all it is. It's completely open ended and we just want you to go and do something good for somebody else, right?

Speaker 1:

I think part of having a great life and being on the path of a great life is helping other people in various forms. So another thing that I started to recognize as our gym grew I wrote something about it, I think, 10 years ago um, the more influence you have, the greater impact you can have, and so that makes this challenge just all that more tough to not do. So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to read through some of the things that we're seeing right now in our private Facebook group, because it's pretty incredible. I'm blown away every time that we do this. So, as of right now, it's 11 am on March 12th we have one more hour for these to roll in before we have the cutoff for people to get a point for their team. For doing this, the points for the teams will be forgotten, and really, these little extra points challenges. It's really rare that we actually have a team that we cap at a certain number of points, and it's really rare that every team doesn't get full points. So, I mean, at the end of the day, it's kind of a wash, but we get really amazing things that come from it. So here we are.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, donations, donations we've had donations too and, and so some of these, before I start reading them, um, some of these have deeply personal meaning and have stories attached to them that I mean the they'll, they'll bring a tear to your eye. Um, there's others that are maybe just like uh, just a quicker thing, but it's again, I we're not stipulating where you go with this, we just want you to do something good, um, and for some people there are good, there's going to be something that comes to mind that is is deeply meaningful, right. So we've had donations to the native women's association, two to hamilton food share, type 1 Diabetes, canada Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History. We've had seven people donate to that LGBTQ Group in Hamilton. Fertility Foundation. Two people donating to suicide prevention. City Kids, stony Creek Food Bank, kids Help Phone. Two people Food for Kids. Two people for the Alzheimer's Society, the Mark Priest Family House, which is a place for people to stay who have loved ones in Hamilton area hospitals. Five people donating to sick kids. Canadian Red Cross, salvation Army, good Shepherd Family Center in Hamilton, which helps with homelessness. Two people donating to the McNally House Hospice, the Ronald McDonald House, big C Cancer Charity. Native Women's Center, hamilton, spca. Canadian Liver Foundation. Two people. Canadian Alopecia Organization.

Speaker 1:

Those were all donations made. And for others we had stories of buying a homeless man lunch appreciation message to a team supporting a friend on a job application, helping families in need through my church, flowers to a couple who just put their dog down, flowers to a local retirement home with the message to give them to whoever they think needs it most at the time. Paid for the car wash. In front of me, three people donating blood, dropping off dinner for elderly parents, a treat and a nice message of appreciation for co-workers. Three people A pair of Leafs, tickets for dad and his friend, coffee for the car behind me. Four people. A bucket of toys for my niece Popping $10 and an encouraging message into a box of newborn diapers at like a local Walmart. A gift card for a friend on her birthday with instructions to go get her nails done. A food donation to Strathcona Pantry. Flowers for a friend whose spouse is in palliative care, and a treat and a nice message to a friend who is in the trenches with two new babies.

Speaker 1:

And there's more to come in. It almost leaves me speechless that all we have to do is and this isn't you can't just do this every day, it's, you know, but we kind of try to pick our times, but it's amazing that you can just put this out there and people will jump on it and be more than happy to do it and and you can choose whatever you want to do. There's literally thousands of dollars donated here at this point and more coming in and just the ability to brighten someone's day. So, um, yeah, I don't. I don't want to go on and on about it. I mean, if you're listening to this, you're human and you understand the impact With that. I will see you in the gym.
