Have you ever wondered why God chose an ordinary man like Moses to write down something so vitally important as the Ten Commandments?
Why not his brother Aaron, or someone else who was far more skilled than him?
Or how about Paul? Or of the most prolific contributors to the New Testament who spent most of his life writing from behind prison walls?
Not to mention David, a harpist and shepherd boy who penned the Psalms, one of the 10 most popular books of the Bible.
What did they have in common? Did they share an ancient secret formula that some 3,000 years later still earns them their fame?
Or did they hide a sacred technique that enabled them to transcribe the word of God across different locations and timelines?
Well, turn up the volume and listen closely because I'm about to give you the exact writing formula these ancient biblical writers used that took them from being ordinary people to some of the most spoken about Christian writers known to us today.
This is going to change your writing life as it did mine. So let's get stuck in, shall we? This is episode five.
I'm Urcelia Teixeira, ex real estate agent turned award winning author of Christian fiction. It wasn't that long ago that I wrote my first novel on a bucket list whim, setting the course for a spiritual journey that transformed my life.
But the journey through self publishing hasn't been easy as I soon found myself upset, obsessing over book sales rankings and getting to the top of the shelves, all the while trying to stay rooted in Christ and live out my purpose.
But God has graciously been teaching me how to navigate the spiritual pitfalls of the brutal book publishing industry, and now I'm sharing them with you. Welcome to the Anointed Scribe podcast, where each week I open my personal diary to share soul nourishing stories designed to inspire, uplift and equip you for your writing life.
If you're already a Christian author or one in the making trying to balance faith with business, you're in the right place. Because for such a time as this, you have been called to thrive as God's anointed scribe.
Are you ready? Let's get started.
Hello, it's your author friend, Urcelia, and I am so super grateful to you for tuning in today.
I cannot be more excited about today's episode. Actually, I'm always excited when God teaches me something new in my writing. And this is something that I'm fiercely protective over and rigid in doing every time I sit down to write and work on or in my author business.
So whether you're sipping coffee walking the dog or just taking a quiet moment to yourself?
I just know this episode is going to be special because I'm about to share with you something God so graciously revealed to me. And it honestly changed my entire writing process and the content of my books, as well as my walk with God.
And by the time you reach the end of this episode, I pray that you will leave here so fired up and ready to use this in your own writing that it will not only unlock your anointing, but also elevate your work to a whole new level.
Because, yes, you and I carry the same anointing Moses and David did.
And we're about to dig in how you can tap into the same secret formula they used.
And I am very certain this will transform your purpose and relationship with a true author of life.
And once you learn this and make it part of your daily writing routine, you can't unlearn it because it becomes such an integral part of your writing routine that your soul craves it if you skip doing it even just once.
But I won't lie, it takes having to be consistent and intentional it to show up in your books, just like you need to be consistent with anything you want to reap the benefits of.
But before we dive into today's topic, if this is your first time here, I'd like to personally welcome you to the Anointed Scribe Tribe.
Thank you for choosing to spend the next 30 minutes or so with me.
I pray this podcast will be a huge blessing to your writing life as you journey with God and me.
I believe with all my heart you are exactly where God needs you to be right now. Because as much as we need God to speak to us from a burning bush, he more often than not speaks to us in quiet whispers.
So listen closely because you're about to discover what you need to do to make sure you're equipped and ready to be used by God in the same way he used Moses, Paul, and the rest of his anointed scribes.
Also, if you enjoy these episodes and find they bring you valuable insight into the heart and mind of godly writing, then may I humbly ask that you just take a few seconds after today's episode to review the show on Apple Podcasts or whatever app you're listening it with.
It's the only way I know that what I'm sharing helps you. And it also lights me up to know that God is working in your life.
So I first discovered this formula when I was preparing to write Jacob's well, the first book in my on-going Angus Reid mystery thriller series.
And honestly, since using it with this book and every next book in this series, my review rating has averaged around 4.8 and my sales continued to grow month over month with little to no human intervention from my side.
In fact, if I'm completely honest, the only other book I've ever written where I want to say I accidentally used this formula on because I wasn't even aware how powerful this was at the time.
But the only other book that never ceases to produce fruits was my debut Christian suspense novel, Every Good Gift.
It's as if something was unleashed over these books. An anointing I cannot buy or create by human hand.
Now, in the previous episode, I gave you the secret sauce that will guarantee your success as a Christian writer, which is the first step in your writing process for this formula to work.
So if you missed episode four, you'll find it on my website at anointedscribe.com
So you now have the secret sauce to your success. But now what?
What did you do with this anointing? And more importantly, how do you keep it?
Well, let me start by asking you this.
What if I told you that God wants to co write your next book with you?
Imagine it for a second.
Will you say yes?
I'm assuming since you're here you'd jump at the chance, right? I mean, who in their right mind wouldn't want God to tell them what to write?
So what would you have to do to prepare for this project?
Take up a course on writing or publishing?
Or perhaps read the entire Bible cover to cover and memorize the key verses?
What if I told you that all you have to do is show up and listen?
That you don't need to be extraordinary, just ordinary?
That even though God's going to do all the work and that you have all the royalties from this book, you just have to put your pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and he'll take care of the rest.
Sounds like a no brainer to me. Are you kidding me?
What's the catch, you ask? Well, nothing, Nada, zip. You just need to show up and spend time with your new co-author. That's it.
So now the sceptic in you, the one that's been preconditioned by society to be cautious about everything, might be asking why me?
Why is God choosing me as his writing partner and not the brilliant shiny author next to me?
Moses asked a similar question when God chose him over his brother Aaron to write down the Ten Commandments.
And the answer is simply because God recognized something in Moses that Aaron didn't have.
It was the same case with David, a lowly shepherd boy, when God chose him over his older brothers to be the next king, even though they showed far more potential to fulfil the role.
There's a reason God chose you. Because being a Christian writer is about so much more than the ability to craft a story or to teach someone your strategy. If you're writing non fiction, these are skills you can learn and even by but allowing God to say what he needs to say to be a vessel for God's truth and letting him work through you is not something anyone other than the Holy Spirit can teach you.
As Christ followers, we quick to make ourselves available to serve at church perhaps or in our community or or home groups. So why would it end there?
Why not open yourself up to letting God write your book for you?
It seems obvious when you think of it like that, right?
Yet we're so eager to slip in behind the keyboard and get going with our work that we neglect to include God in it.
The ideas are swirling and you just need to get it out on the paper, right?
But are they your ideas or God's ideas?
Are you including your co-author or are you going at it on your own?
I've been guilty of surface levelling God in my writing many times when I've allowed my mind to overwrite my spirit and write in my own strength and worldly wisdom. And I'll tell you, it takes intention to not forget to pull up a chair for God next to me, especially when there's a looming deadline or I get busy and distracted and all up in my head about stuff.
But once I realised that this gifting God gave me was his to do with as he pleased, and that writing with God is a privilege, not a right, my entire perspective changed.
It became more about writing with God instead of for God, which is the part most writers focus on. And of course this plays massively into our purpose. And I'm not discounting it at all.
But when you write with God, collaborate with God on your book, share ideas and brainstorm together in the same way you would if you were to write it with another author.
Man, that changes things.
And that's what David did when he wrote the Psalms from where he lay between the sheep and the fields, chewing on a blade of grass.
And Moses did it too. And Jeremiah, and even Paul from behind a prison wall.
They let God do the writing.
Moses didn't make up the ten Commandments.
They weren't his Creative ideas.
He followed God's voice up to the top of the mountain and recorded what he heard God speak.
But it was his brother Aaron who actually delivered the laws to the people. Yet we all mostly associate Moses with this story. Did you know that?
So why didn't God just speak directly to Aaron? Why go through Moses?
Well, since you're on the other end of the sound waves, I'll tell you.
Because Moses had something his brother Aaron didn't have.
And spoiler alert, it's the very same thing David had and Paul and every scribe God chose to record the truth, hope and freedom we find in the Bible today.
Moses and every single one of these writers had a relationship with God. And in Moses case, one that was far more intimate than his brother Aaron's relationship was with God.
Exodus 33:11 says that the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, speaking to the intimacy they had.
Moses was rooted in God and God could therefore trust him to deliver what he needed the people to hear.
See where I'm going with this?
For God to use you to speak to his people, you need to be rooted in him and be a trustworthy messenger who will deliver God's message to those who don't yet know God like you do.
God could have easily given the Ten Commandments to Aaron, but he didn't trust him to deliver the laws to the Israelites.
There was no relationship between them. In fact, while Moses climbed that mountain to receive the Ten Commandments, his brother Aaron was helping the Israelites build a golden calf to worship.
God already knew his heart and what Aaron was about to do before Moses even reached the top of the mountain or saw the burning bush.
And in the same way God chose David because of his pure heart.
The same is said about Paul, who praised God and stayed faithful even whilst enduring the toughest circumstances.
I'm reminded of this scripture, Psalm 45:1, which has pretty much become the most quoted scripture for Christian writers. You get stickers and T shirts and mugs with it on. I'm sure you've seen it or even used it yourself at some stage.
And it goes like this. My heart overflows with a good theme. I address my verses to the king. My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
Recognize it? I'm sure you do.
But have you really looked at this verse properly?
Pay attention to what David is saying here.
The very first sentence in this verse holds the key.
My heart overflows with a good theme.
As writers, we might translate this good theme as a good plot.
See, before we can pour out our stories or advice if you write nonfiction.
We need to make sure that our hearts align with God's heart so that our work reflects God's heart, not ours.
And in order to do that, we need to be filled with His Spirit first before we sit down to write.
Exodus 31:3 says, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship that includes our writing.
So how do we do this?
How do we turn our superficial please help me with this or that prayers into an invitation for God to do the writing well, we start by asking God to fill us with his spirit so that we can have wisdom, understanding and knowledge in the writing that he has called us to do.
But instead of a one liner prayer, we can go deeper in our asking and meet with God face to face just like Moses did.
And if we do this consistently, our relationship with God will deepen and we will enter that intimate place where our hearts align with God. God's Heart so I'm going to share how I personally prepare my heart and mind before I write.
From meeting with God in the quiet morning hours to setting the atmosphere with worship music and biblical oils, it's all about inviting the Holy Spirit, God, the ultimate Creator, into your creative process.
What you do before and while you write can make all the difference in your book's end result.
I refer to this process as writing in the Spirit.
So here are the four elements that make up the proven formula that will transform your writing life.
Meeting with God which is your very first priority before anything else, the most important part of my routine is spending time with God.
I believe with all my heart that you can't pour out what you haven't first received.
Writing stories that reflect his truth and love requires us to be in close communion with Him.
For me, this is a vital part of my writing process because I write mystery thrillers and so I have to know how to turn the darkness into light. How God uses evil for good so before we write a single word, we need to meet with the author of life.
For me, this happens first thing in the morning. I intentionally get up at 5:30am and carve out time when the world is still asleep. And then I sit with God oftentimes in the dark.
No distractions, no noise, just me and God.
I always have my notebook or notes app with me to jot down what I'm hearing God saying to me and I also use this time to journal.
I encourage you to find a time that works for you. But consistency is key.
The Bible says in Matthew 6:33 but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
This includes the creativity, the inspiration and the words we need When I sit with God, I don't just rush through prayer.
I pray over my writing, my characters, the themes he wants me to explore. I ask for specific Scripture and I bring it all before him and ask, what do you want me to say, Lord?
What message should I bring to life in my book?
What trial should my character go through?
And then I listen.
That's the part we often forget. Making space to hear from God. John 10:27 tells us, My sheep hear my voice.
God wants to speak to us even in our writing, especially in our writing, since he has chosen us to be his anointed scribes. We just have to be still and listen.
Which brings me to point number two.
Filling your heart with a word.
Now let's talk about the foundation for everything we do as Christian writers. God's word, Luke 6:45 tells us for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
If we want our writing to flow with life, truth and power, we need to make sure our hearts are full of the Word.
I never skip reading my Bible as part of my preparation and usually supplement it with a devotional or biblical teaching plan.
I use two apps for this, the Abide app and the YouVersion app. I'll link to them in the show notes if you've not heard of them.
The Bible isn't just a source of inspiration, it's literally the secret formula to having a face to face relationship with the Lord.
It's how we learn God's character, how we see his redemptive plan for the world, and how we understand the struggles and victories of real people.
Every time I sit down to write, I go back to Scripture because I know that without it, my stories will lack the spiritual and transformative depth they need to inspire, encourage and entertain my readers.
Psalm 119, verse 105 says, you, word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
As writers, we need that light to guide the stories we tell.
We need God to illuminate the way, showing us how to weave his truth into the fabric of our narratives and in my case, how to turn an evil plot into a redemptive story.
If you ever feel stuck in your writing, go back to the word, pray over your story and ask God to reveal to you what he wants to say through it.
Jesus spoke in parables all the time learn from Him. There's power in Scripture, and when it's the foundation of your writing, your words will have a lasting impact.
3.
Using music to Usher in the Holy Spirit Another part of my routine is using music to usher in the Holy Spirit.
There's something incredibly powerful about worship when you let yourself be surrounded by songs that glorify God. His presence just seems to fill the space and it softens our hearts, allowing us to be more open to hearing from Him.
David played his harp and wrote songs in worship to God, and he never lacked any inspiration.
The Book of Psalms is the third longest book in the Bible by number of words, with 30,147 words, all inspired by music and worship.
I have a curated playlist just for this purpose, for when I need to focus purely on God's voice, and I turn this on whenever I need to get into that prayerful, focused space.
It's filled with songs that speak to the heart and lift me up to usher me into that spiritual place with my co writer.
I don't necessarily sing along with him, although I often do what I often do when I want to speak certain words over myself and my business.
But just sitting eyes closed is mostly what I do, and it's something I repeat when I'm actually sitting down at my desk too, right before I start to work.
Sometimes I even play it in the background.
I'll be happy to share my playlist with you if you want it. Actually, I'll just add it to the playlist to the resource library for anyone who wants to use it.
But worship truly prepares us to receive from God, whether it's peace, creativity, or Even correction.
Psalm 22:3 says, God inhabits the praises of his people.
When we worship, we invite him to dwell among us.
So before you start writing, why not set the atmosphere with worship?
Let your heart and mind rest in his presence before you even think about the first line of your story and the last point is setting the scene or creating a sacred space.
I'm a firm believer that your physical environment can reflect your spiritual state, and this goes above organization and having a tidy desk and office, which I do. I just can't work if even a pen is out of place.
And that's why part of my routine includes setting the scene, creating a space that invites peace, focus, and God's presence.
Writing can sometimes feel like a battle, especially when it's rooted in sharing God's truth, so making sure your environment is calm and sacred can be incredibly helpful.
One of the things I also do is light a candle or use essential oils.
Certain oils like frankincense, myrrh and cedarwood have biblical significance and can bring a sense of grounding and focus.
Frankincense was used in temple offerings and is known for calming the spirit. Myrrh was used for anointing and purification, and cedarwood has a grounding effect that can help you feel centered.
In the Bible, these oils were used for worship, for healing, and for drawing nearer to God.
I find that using them in my writing space helps remind me that this is more than just a creative endeavor. It's a spiritual one too.
So maybe light a candle or diffuse some oils as a way to make your space feel sacred.
Pray over your desk, your notebook, your laptop. Ask God to make this space a place where His Spirit can flow through you and into your writing.
So how does this all come together?
It's simple, but so powerful.
Preparing your spirit before writing Christian fiction or non fiction isn't about checking boxes or following a physical formula.
It's about making time to meet face to face with God.
It's about building a relationship with God and becoming trustworthy so he can use you to say what he needs to say to set the world free.
Setting a peaceful and sacred space and filling your heart with His Word opens your heart and your mind and sets you up to fulfill your heavenly purpose.
When you do this, writing becomes more than just a creative process.
It becomes an act of worship.
Our very own Paul wrote this in 1 Corinthians 10:31.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
As Christian writers, whatever we do applies to our work as well.
When we surrender our writing to him, it becomes a part of our worship.
We're offering our creativity back to the One who gave it to us in the first place.
And the best part? When we do this, God takes the pressure off.
Writing is no longer about trying to come up with a perfect plot or character arc or next best solution.
It's about allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us and trusting that he'll give us the words we need when we need them.
More importantly, can God trust you to deliver the messages to his people?
Will you be like Moses and David and Paul and abide in him so you too can meet him face to face?
As you prepare to write today or whenever you sit down next to write, remember this Meet with God first.
Set the atmosphere with worship. Create a peaceful space and fill your heart with His Word.
Your stories have the power to change lives, and when your spirit is aligned with God's. When your heart and God's heart is one, there's no limit to what he can do through you.
John 14:6 in the good News translation says this the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.
And there you have it, the proven formula used by the first anointed scribes who co wrote with the world's number one best selling author of all time.
I hope this episode has encouraged you and given you practical steps to draw closer to God in your writing process and I pray blessing and favour upon you and your books today.
In Jesus name In our next episode, we're going to dive deep into something I know many of us struggle with writer's block, but I'm not talking about the creative kind.
I'm going to tell you what's really stopping your words from flowing and how to overcome it.
So make sure you tune in for that. It's going to be a powerful discussion that I'm hoping will move you even closer to God and further into your calling.
Because for such a time as this, you have been called to thrive as God's Anointed Scribe.
