METROPOLIS - THE TRAILER

SOUND The soaring sound of dozens of robots powering up in a cavernous, hangar-like room.

ROBOTS (echoing cacophony)
City Services!

NAN My god… how can this be?

-CUT-

BACKGROUND The theme of Metropolis - a piano-synth duet that gains speed and urgency as it continues.

ZORA Is that Stanley?  He wrote?  Guy gets the dream invitation… and I still told him not to go.

STANLEY (from letter)
Nan!  Look at me!  The whole works just the way they want it to, however they want it.  That’s Metropolis.  Which is why you need to get out here!

NAN (responding to letter)
I’m telling you now, they’d never let anyone like me on that island.

(at a later time, to Berno, Stan having gone missing)
Stanley?  Where is he?  What do you know?

BERNO I don’t know!  He’s just vanished!

OLIVER (separately, to Nan, knowing the answers should be self-evident)
What do you think happened to your friend?  Who do you think made that happen?

ALSACE You have taken an incredible risk coming here.

NAN (to herself)
It’s a cage… it can’t be, can it?

ALSACE (continuing from before)
There is something very dark happening.  I can’t explain the dread… but it is here.

ANDERS (giving a speech)
We have a moment, right now.  This narrow window where we are the only ones who know the secret.

OLIVER (to Nan, away from speech)
I cannot believe they built this place.

ANDERS (continuing, intercut)
If we can use it the right way, we can make a world that actually works.

NAN (to Oliver)
Why did they make it like this?

ANDERS (continuing, intercut)
But if we bungle it… if we let this opportunity slip away… the world is lost.

NAN (to Oliver)
It’s hell.  The mouth of hell.

OLIVER (to Nan)
You know what we have to do –

NAN Shhhhhh…

BACKGROUND The music cuts off.  It’s quiet except for the stylus turning in the grooves of an old record, but nothing is playing.  Then we hear…

ODD VOICE No one ever dies in Metropolis… spend a minute here…
(darkening, doubling)
…see if we’re not wrong.
