Energetic Allergies: When Your Body Reacts to Energy
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Allergy season is in full swing, and while most of us are thinking about pollen and histamines, there may be another layer worth paying attention to.
In this episode, we explore the idea of energetic allergies — the ways our bodies and nervous systems respond to emotional environments, interactions, and subtle energetic dynamics around us.
Why do some people leave us feeling calm and nourished while others leave us exhausted or uneasy? What if our bodies are picking up on more information than we consciously realize?
We’ll talk about emotional “histamines,” energetic compatibility, and how developing what I call energetic immunity can help you move through the world with greater awareness and steadiness.
Sometimes what we call sensitivity is actually a form of guidance.

Hello friends and welcome back. I'm really glad you're here today. If you happen to be listening to this episode around the time it's being released, you probably know exactly what season we've entered into. The trees are blooming, the air is full of pollen, and it's allergy season. And of course, there are very real physical reasons why our bodies respond the way they do this time of year. When something like pollen enters our body, the immune system sometimes identifies it as a threat, and it launches a response meant to protect us. Histamines get released, inflammation shows up, and the body starts doing everything it can to push that substance back out. But today, I want to explore something a little bit different. I want to talk about the idea of energetic allergies. And what I mean by this is the way our bodies and nervous systems sometimes respond to energy environments and interactions with other people in ways that can feel surprisingly similar to an allergic response. Because if you're paying attention to your own experiences, you might notice that there are certain people you can spend hours with and feel completely relaxed, completely yourself and completely at ease. Your body will soften around them, your mind settles, and the whole interaction feels nourishing rather than draining. And then there are other moments, other conversations, other environments, other people, where you may find yourself feeling exhausted after an interaction that on the surface seemed perfectly normal. Sometimes these reactions happen so quickly that we don't consciously register them. Our mind may be still trying to make sense of the situation, but our body has already responded. And the body, as it turns out, is incredibly honest. If we think about what an allergy actually is, at its core, it's our body identifying something as a potential threat to its balance and responding in a way designed to protect itself. The substance might not be inherently dangerous to everyone, but the system perceives it as something that doesn't belong or something that disrupts its equilibrium. Now, imagine applying the same idea to the energetic layer of our lives. What if our bodies and nervous systems are not only scanning for physical threats, but also the emotional and energetic environment around us? What if our systems can recognize things like emotional tension, manipulation, criticism, pressure, or even subtle misalignment in a way that triggers a protective response? When that happens, the reaction might not show up as sneezing or watery eyes, but it can still show up very clearly in the body. It might look like tension creeping into the shoulders or jaw. It might look like sudden fatigue after spending time with someone, or it might show up as brain fog, emotional heaviness, irritability, or the quiet but persistent feeling that you need to step away and create space. Many of us have experienced this without necessarily having language for it. You might leave a conversation and feel completely drained even though nothing dramatic happened. You might walk into a room and instantly feel uncomfortable without really knowing why. You might notice that certain environments seem to exhaust your system while others leave you feeling calm and grounded. You may have noticed these kinds of responses, but dismiss them or explained them away. You might have thought or have been told that you were being too sensitive or overthinking things or imagining patterns that weren't actually there. But the more we learn about the nervous system, emotional regulation, and the way humans influence each other energetically, the more we begin to understand that our bodies are constantly receiving subtle information. In other words, the body's paying attention long before the mind catches up. In my work with clients, I see this dynamic come up quite often. Someone will describe feeling certain aches and pains in their bodies that they have tried everything to figure out. I've seen clients with twitching eyes, ringing in the ears, brain fog, or anxiety. The bottom line is what they're often describing is their energetic system reacting to something that doesn't feel aligned or supportive. It's not necessarily dangerous, but it's incompatible. And that idea of incompatibility is important because it shifts the conversation away from blame. Just like pollen isn't bad, even though some bodies react strongly to it, the pollen isn't intentionally harming anyone. It's simply something that certain systems recognize as something they cannot comfortably process. Energetically, we can experience similar dynamics with people, environments, and emotional states. Some feel neutral and some feel like our whole system wants absolutely nothing to do with them. There's another layer to this that I find really interesting, and it has to do with the emotional atmosphere that exists in spaces we move through every day. When we think about physical allergies, histamines are one of the main chemical messengers involved in the body's response. They're part of what creates that familiar cascade of reactions, the swelling, the itching, the irritation. All of that is the body's attempt to deal with something it believes shouldn't be there. Now, of course, I'm not suggesting that emotional situations literally release histamines in the same way pollen does. But energetically speaking, you might think of certain emotional environments as having something similar in a sense. We could call them emotional histamines. Have you ever walked into a room where something clearly happened before you arrived? No one said anything yet, but you can feel the tension in the air. Conversations are shorter, energy feels thick or quiet, and it's uncomfortable in a way that's hard to explain. Your body registers that immediately. Or maybe you've been in a conversation where someone is smiling and speaking politely, but underneath the words, there's frustration, resentment, manipulation, or criticism that hasn't actually been expressed. Even if no one names it directly, the emotional charge is still present in the room. And for people who are even moderately sensitive to energy, those emotional currents can be felt quite clearly. And just like with a physical irritant, the nervous system may be reacting. The body might tighten, your breath might subtly become shallow. You might feel that urge to withdraw or distance yourself without really realizing why. What you're sensing in those moments is often the emotional energy that hasn't processed or expressed in a healthy way. And because humans are incredibly social and interconnected creatures, our nervous systems are constantly responding to the emotional states of the people around us, especially those of us who have open or undefined emotional solar plex centers in our human design chart. People with this type of openness might be especially sensitive to energy and emotions around them. This is part of how empathy and co-regulation work. When someone is carrying a large amount of unresolved emotional energy, whether it be anger, anxiety, control, shame, grief, that energy doesn't stay neatly contained within them. It moves. It moves through the interaction, through the conversation, and through the environment. Some nervous systems are more open and pick that up very quickly. So when people describe themselves as feeling overwhelmed in certain environments or needing time alone after intense social situations, it isn't necessarily because they're fragile or incapable of handling the world. Very often it simply means their nervous system is accurately perceiving the environment around them. One of the reasons this can be confusing is because many of us were conditioned to override those signals. From a very early age, we're often taught to prioritize politeness over instinct, harmony over honesty, and endurance over our boundaries. So when the body quietly whispers, this doesn't feel good, we push through it anyway. But the body doesn't stop communicating simply because we ignore it. Over time, the signals tend to become stronger. And what once showed up as subtle discomfort might begin appearing as chronic exhaustion, reoccurring headaches, emotional overwhelm, or the need to withdraw and recover after certain interactions. And this isn't about labeling people as having bad energy. It's often simply about energetic compatibility. Some people regulate our nervous systems just by being themselves. Their presence feels calm, steady, and easy to be around. And other people carry a lot of emotional intensity, stress, frustration, anxiety, control. And even when that isn't intentional, our nervous system still registers it. For individuals who are intuitive, empathetic, or sensitive to subtle shifts in energy, these emotional currents can be felt very strongly. The body may respond by tightening, pulling inward, or creating distance. And there is nothing wrong with being sensitive. The body is doing exactly what it was designed to do, protecting its balance. Another way to think about this is through the lens of what we might call energetic immunity. When we talk about physical health, we often speak about the immune system and how it learns over time to recognize what belongs in the body and what doesn't. A strong immune system doesn't mean the body never encounters irritants or viruses or bacteria. It simply means the system is better equipped to recognize what it's dealing with and respond appropriately. Energetically, something very similar happens as we grow in self-awareness. Early in life, many of us move through the world without a clear understanding of our own energetic boundaries. We absorb the moods of people around us. We take on emotions that don't actually belong to us, and we stay in environments that drain us because we assume that's simply part of being a responsible or kind person. But as awareness develops through experience, through intuition, through the quiet noticing of how our body responds to the world, we begin to recognize that not every emotion in the room belongs to us. Not every energetic current needs to be carried by our nervous system. And not every interaction requires us to override what our body is clearly telling us. This is where energetic immunity begins to strengthen. It grows through simple but powerful practices, learning to ground yourself, learning to return to your own center, learning to recognize when something belongs to you and when it doesn't. It grows through boundaries, not the kind that push people away harshly, but the kind that simply say, I know where I end and you begin. And it grows through trust, trust in signals that your body gives you, trust in the quiet guidance of your intuition, trust that sensitivity is not a weakness to overcome, but a form of awareness that can help you navigate the world more skillfully. When that kind of inner stability begins to develop, something shifts in a really beautiful way. You may still encounter difficult environments, you might still notice tension or emotional intensity in certain spaces. But instead of your system being completely overwhelmed by those currents, you begin to move through them with more steadiness. You can observe the energy without absorbing all of it. You can recognize what's happening without needing to carry it. Your system becomes less reactive and more responsive. And that's really what energetic immunity is all about. Not building walls around yourself or trying to control the emotional atmosphere of every room you walk into, but simply developing enough connection to your own center that you can move through the world without losing yourself in the process. Just like our physical immune system, this kind of resilience builds gradually. It grows through awareness, through practice, and through the willingness to listen when the body gives us information. And the beautiful thing is, the more we learn to trust those signals, the easier it becomes to recognize where we truly feel at home energetically. So, as we move through this very literal allergy season, I invite you to experiment with noticing the energetic side of your responses as well. Pay attention to the places where your body feels relaxed. Pay attention to the places where it tightens. Notice the interactions that leave you feeling more alive and the ones that quietly drain your system. Your body is giving you information all the time. And sometimes what we call sensitivity is actually a very sophisticated form of guidance. Until next time, take care of your energy, trust the wisdom of your body, and remember, learning to listen to yourself is one of the most powerful skills you can develop on this path.
