Vegans Talking Shit
Vegans are a controversial, much-maligned group, but we're all just regular human beings who live, love, and laugh. And man, can we talk shit. Join Jon, Vanessa, and Joey as we talk shit about what it's like to be vegan. Every week, we'll be talking shit about a different topic related to living a vegan lifestyle; the good, the bad, and the ugly. But since we seem to be completely incapable of staying on topic, we also talk shit about music, movies, comic books, and anything else that might come up during the conversation. So tune in to Vegans Talking Shit, available weekly on Apple Podcasts, Amazon, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Movies, TV Shows, and More Japan Talk
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
For the second week in a row, it's just Jon and Joey holding down the fort while the resident voice of reason, Vanessa, finishes up her time in Brazil. Without Vanessa around to keep the boys in check, it's a total repeat of last week's detour, though the chaos shifts toward the world of cinema. The derailment begins when Jon points out Joey's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" t-shirt, which immediately triggers Joey into an endless soliloquy about his favorite terrible movies. From there, he pivots to his massive anticipation for the upcoming "Supergirl" movie and his deep love for the specific comics that inspired the film. Joey finally takes a breath just long enough for Jon to reclaim the microphone, and Jon uses the opportunity to share more about his recent Japan trip, making special note of the country's ubiquitous vending machines. Naturally, they lapse right back into talking about random movies and TV shows before they inexplicably wrap up the episode by dissecting the thriving hair transplant market in Turkey. Seriously, somebody please get Vanessa on a flight home before these two start discussing the strict rules of competitive goat herding!

Hey everybody, welcome to Vegans Talking Shit. I'm Joey. I'm John. Oh, John. Oh, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you got a new shirt on, Joseph.
SPEAKER_00I do. Plan nine from Outer Space. The one of the worst movies ever made. I'm undecided if the worst movie ever made is Plan Nine from Outer Space, The Room by the Unimitable Tommy Weisso, or Troll 2. But my favorite of those three is probably Plan 9 from Outer Space. It has my favorite uh bad movie line ever.
unknownOh, what is it?
SPEAKER_00Now I can't even remember.
SPEAKER_01The room, the room is with the the mom and the daughter, right?
SPEAKER_00And then no, no, you're thinking of room, not the room. Yeah, room is good. Room was no no that I think it won the Oscar. Well, it won B Lars than the Oscar uh for best actors. That's a great movie. Or no that I don't know. Maybe I I don't know, but no, what I'm talking about is the room. It's it's so bad, it's disturbing, especially since Tommy Weizo, who wrote and directed the movie, he's like this guy at the time he was in his 50s, but he tried to do what he could to look like he was in his 20s. He had like long hair that he would dye black, but his face, you could tell that he was a much older man. Um, and he would do these really disturbingly gross love scenes with this woman who was in her 20s, and you know, the you the you did get the the the music dropping, and then you get the you know, it almost sounds like porno music, but it's the love scenes with this guy in his 50s, this poor woman who was doing the love scenes with him. But they're like seven love scenes in this movie, and they all are you know, they're all they're all him, yeah, and it's just I highly recommend any of you who are into bad movies, go watch The Room from Tommy Wise O. My god, but me personally, Plan Line from Outer Space, and I remember the line now. Your stupid minds, stupid, stupid, yeah, okay. Uh, so yeah, John and I we decided to do this episode. Is there a topic? Probably not, but before we get started or whatever the hell we were gonna get started, uh oh, I'll do this because uh you always tell me what we should do this, and yes, you're right. Like us, uh, subscribe to us uh on social media, um at vegan's talking shit, or just search vegan's talking shit. Uh, like, subscribe, ring the alarm bell, Apple Podcasts, Amazon, Spotify, iHeart, you know, that whole deal. And I just want to tell you all, because in the last episode, I mentioned the upcoming Supergirl movie, and I just wanted to do a little bit of showing off. I mentioned that it would include Lobo. This comic book came out in 1983. So it's like 40 years old, more than 40 years old. It's a Mega Man, the Mega Man number three, first appearance of Lobo, and when Supergirl, the movie comes out this summer. Uh, it's probably gonna make Lobo mainstream. He's a great, great character. And Supergirl is based on this comic book, Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King. It's an eight-issue uh series or mini-series, I should say. Uh, this is number one. Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow is one of the best comic books ever written. Tom King is a kind of a he's a writer that you either love him or hate him. Uh, I think that when he's great, he's really great, and this is one of his greats. Um, yeah, so I'm really looking forward to the Supergirl movie, as you can tell. Yeah. Oh, oh, and one more thing. And this is actually somewhat vegan related because you know, I got my package. Um yeah, what'd you get? Okay, one of the things I got was hint water.
SPEAKER_01Can you do an opening? Like, can you do can you open the box for us?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I already opened it. That's a great idea for the for the future, yeah. But uh, one of the things I got because I can't find this in stores. There's this many of you know I drink hint water while we record it. It used to be Coke Zero, um, but now it's hint water. I'm healthier now. And my favorite flavor flavor by far is strawberry kiwi, but I can't find it anywhere. Publix Whole Foods, I can't find it. Um, so I order it through Amazon. I get uh I get the eight-pack. Is it eight pack or twelve pack? I don't remember. But anyway, so I got the new pack of hint water, strawberry kiwi flavored. But what I really want to plug is this toothpaste that I get from Amazon. It's vegan and um it's the company is BOCA and it's nandohydroxipotite. Uh let's try that again. Nandohydroxipatite toothpaste. It's what's used instead of fluoride because I know that there are people who think fluoride is terrible. I don't think fluoride is terrible, but it's most beneficial for people who eat a lot of acidic food. I don't eat a lot of acidic food. Um, so I'm I don't need fluoride as much as someone who does eat a lot of acidic food. But for those who don't eat a lot of acidic food, this is better than fluoride. And it's vegan, it's a it's a very uh cool toothpaste. It's vegan and cruelty-free, no fluoride, no SLS, no parabens, no endocrine disruptors. I highly, highly recommend this toothpaste. Endocrine disruptors, whatever the hell that is. I swear to god, I don't know what that means. I'm just looking reading what it says in the back.
SPEAKER_01That sounds like something from Star Wars. Like our friend. Oh, he's over. Wait, where is he? Over here, our friend here, or back to the future.
SPEAKER_00You have the endocrine disruptor next to the flux capacitor.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, something I just thought of when you were uh showing your hint water. So you've probably seen this on on Instagram or somewhere on social media, they have vending machines all over Japan. It isn't just like one in the you know, a couple in the in the train station. Yeah, in the train station, there are like two every 50 feet. When you're on the street, on every corner, there are vending machines. It is insane. It is there's just vending machines everywhere, and what's in the vending machines? Mostly drinks, okay, like like 50 different drinks, and then there'll be one next to it, and it'd have 50 different other drinks. It's crazy. So drinks are popular, almost all of them have dairy or some type of animal product, so it was really it was really difficult to find no soda. There was some soda, but it is it is difficult. Um, and I don't know. We didn't we weren't drinking that much soda there for whatever reason. I had one Coke, I remember coke's very cheap there. It was one dollar. One dollar, one dollar. Um, but we found this one drink that I absolutely loved. I don't know what the hell it was called because it was in Japanese, but it was uh it was like a lychee. Uh have you ever heard of the fruit lychee? Yeah, yeah, almost like so, and it was just so good. And I only saw it in two different vending machines. When I tell you I saw a lot of vending machines, I saw a lot of vending machines, and every time we would see one, we'd run over there. No, they don't have it. We'd run over there again, no, they don't have it. We saw like 500 vending machines when we were there, and we only found it in two. And I think we saw them when they were in Tokyo, and that was in the beginning of our trip when we saw these these lychee drinks, and then we never saw them again in any of the vending machines. We were quite upset. That's interesting. Yeah, the vending machine culture is is crazy. It's it's on every single corner, no matter where you're walking. What also is interesting is um the train stations in um Japan, Joseph. They um so they what they did was I I read an article when I was there. Um because or I I actually I think I didn't read an article, I think I asked ChatGPT and they gave me this answer. I was so curious why the train stations were so nice, and when I say mean nice, a lot of them would be connected to like these underground malls that had really nice restaurants, they had really nice shopping, like literally there'd be a Rolex store or a Hermes store, yeah, or a Louis Vuitton, especially in the big cities in Tokyo and Kyoto. And I'm like, this is crazy. This is a train station, but it's like it's unbelievable. You know how how nice it is, how nice the stores are, the restaurants, and and um the train stations are like destinations almost. And then you get out of the train station and there's like nice real estate around it. So what they did was the government years ago when they were when they were forming their their public transportation system, they priced the real estate around the train station to be a lot higher than other areas, and so the nice stores and the nice restaurants and the condominiums and whatever are all surrounded are either connected or they're all very close to it. So they made it so it's not out of the way for people, like there's grocery stores connected to the train stations. So it's part of the daily life for a Japanese person now to not just go to the train station to travel, but to also do their shopping, to eat, to meet people. So it was a very smart what they did where they only where they don't do that here at all. Obviously, they do it here, but not in it just got dark. Did you see that? It got dark. I don't know what happened. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure. Um, they do that here with Brightline, but that's a price, that's different. It's privately owned, and I don't think it's to the same extent as what you're talking about either.
SPEAKER_01Um, there's zero extent. I was in uh the Fort Lauderdale Bright Line, Fort Lauderdale Bright Line has nothing, it's a nice looking train station, right? There's no restaurants. Brightline might have their own little no, no, no, they have a bar.
SPEAKER_00The Fort Lauderdale station, they have a bar.
SPEAKER_01I get it, but these are these are like underground cities with but I'm just saying, like for Bright Line, at least there's something.
SPEAKER_00If you go to like the public transportation, it's absolutely not like that.
SPEAKER_01No, and this is their public, yeah. This is their public around the entire country. So that that was you know, like here, like public transportation is kind of looked down upon, right? The people that take the bus, the train, you know, it's unfortunately like people think of that as like sometimes like middle class or even you know, poor. Yeah, it's not like that in in Japan at all. It is a necessity, and it's also part of the it's just part of the way of life, no matter who you are. And they take it. What was cool about to not cool actually, what was interesting about Tokyo, what what actually it just I just was reminded of this. What was different in Tokyo than the other the other uh cities, Tokyo is very um it's a lot of businessmen and business women too, but mostly businessmen. They're all dressed the same. When I was telling you, like on a col like on a previous episode, how everything's about the collective. There, no one is dressed different. Everyone has a dark suit, dark tie, white shirt, dark shoes.
SPEAKER_00Every one sounds like the cast of reservoir dogs, dude.
SPEAKER_01It's crazy. You you feel like you're in the matrix or something sometimes, or you're in some futuristic society. The women don't dress too different. It's it's not you know, like women here, they'll have different colorful dresses or skirts, or you know, the people going to work every day, they're wearing basically the same thing, yeah. And this is just part of their culture. Um it was crazy. Like, I don't know how they tell each other. This is not a racist thing. I just literally don't know how they tell each other apart sometimes. They're all wearing white shirts, dark ties, dark suits. Maybe one's a shade of blue a little bit, and one's a dark um, you know, one's a black. Also, what was interesting, especially in Tokyo, was there is this culture of it's not geisha, but it's it it comes from like the anime, I think. Yeah, the women, the young women, especially like I'd say 16 to even younger, probably 14 to 35. They're all win. I'm trying not to sexualize this, even though I just said it, so maybe I am. But the women are all wearing short skirts. This is not the business, the business people, but this is like the kind of younger generation, I guess. They're wearing very short skirts, knee-high socks, and like just this. Um I don't even know how to describe it, sometimes almost like wedding dress looking type, like a lot of lace. There's this whole, and a lot of stores sell this too. It's this whole like uh, have you seen that? You know what I'm talking about?
SPEAKER_00No, but it does seem like it is heavily inspired by anime. It is very I think uh Sailor Moon, and it does seem inspired by anime, and anime, as you know, is huge there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um, and then you even like the school uniforms, they all wear the boys wear shirts, shoot, suit, and tie, not suit and tie, but maybe jacket and you know, kind of formal, and the girls wear skirts and like knee high socks, right? Um, yeah, it's just kind of this like collective that they're all kind of wearing the same. Interesting, interesting, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I definitely do want to take a trip to Tokyo. Uh, and if you and Vanessa go next year, yeah. I mean, count me in. Uh, I could be your third wheel.
SPEAKER_01We would love you to go as our third wheel.
SPEAKER_00Uh can you imagine doing an episode there? We can do on location in Japan in Tokyo.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we did a few, uh, where did we we did it from the vegan cruise one time? We did a that's right on location, a couple episodes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Um, this is I don't know, our listeners don't know this, but I mean, while we're recording this, we haven't really spoken in what's like a month, and we certainly haven't recorded in over a month. Uh, so in that time, I've watched a lot of movies and TV shows. And if you're okay with it, I'd like to talk about it a little bit. Uh, my likes and dislikes. Are you okay with that? Sure. Okay. Um, so yeah, I did a lot of uh TV and movie watching. Uh, the first the first thing I want to talk about is the babysitter. It's it's there are two movies, uh, The Babysitter and The Babysitter Killer Queen. Both of them, well, the first one it stars Samara Weaving. I don't know if you know who Samara Weaving is. Um, she is the niece of the actor Hugo Weaving, who was in The Matrix as Mr. Smith. Uh, he's like the main villain of The Matrix. Um, he was also in Lord of the Rings, but Samara Weaving, she's gorgeous, but also she's an incredibly talented actor. She's kind of made a name for herself being in like horror comedy movies, and The Babysitter, the two movies are a great example of that. The Babysitter is so good, like it's horror comedy, and it's just great. Uh, it's a Netflix movie. I highly recommend it. And the sequel, Samara Weaving, in it isn't in it as much. Actually, um, oh my god, what's her name? Jenna, Jenna, what is her name? She's in The Wednesday. Is it I know her name? Yeah, I don't know. I can't believe I don't remember her name. I mean, but anyway, she she was in uh are you checking chat GPT? No, no, okay. Yeah, it's Jenna Ortega. I can't believe I couldn't remember that name. Yeah, Jenna Ortega, the star of Wednesday. She stars in the sequel to The Babysitter, the Babysitter Killer Queen, but this was before she was in Wednesday. Uh, and then I watched a movie called uh Blackberry, which is pretty old. Did you see Blackberry?
SPEAKER_01Very good movie, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it's really good. Um, it's a very cool story based on the true story about uh the creation of the Blackberry, and very interesting. Uh, I I watched um Together, it's a movie with Dave Franco and Alison Bree. It's body horror. Uh, I really recommend that movie. It's it's different.
SPEAKER_01I watched you, I think you should talk about Blackberry a little bit because I think that's a wonderful movie. I agree. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's it's not what I expected. Um, I guess I was probably thinking it would be more like the social network, and it was nothing like it.
SPEAKER_01I really like that actor, Jay Barshall, I think his name is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's very, very funny. Yeah, he but I don't he wasn't really funny in this movie. He was just because of you know who he is, but I I don't think it was like it was a comedic performance. I think just the character, uh, you know, you just can't help but to laugh. Yeah, um, but yeah, he was very good, especially because he almost plays like two different characters, because in the first part of the movie, he's like very introverted and kind of not even kind of extremely dorky, and then you know, as as the the the product becomes more and more successful, he kind of changes his personality. Um, but the actor, I forgot his name. He plays the bald dude who's like he's got the attitude. Um, I forgot his name. I know he's in always it's always sunny in Philadelphia, but he was fantastic.
SPEAKER_01I can't remember the I just remember him in the movie. I can't, I mean, I know the story of BlackBerry, yeah. Uh, but I can't remember like little bits and pieces of the movie because it's been a while. But yeah, remember really enjoying it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the the I guess you can say like the the main character of the movie wasn't Jay Burrischell, it was that other actor who he was the one who kind of like he he was an asshole, he was a real asshole. He would always yell at people, kick things, and uh he was a very aggressive uh kind of an alpha male type of guy, but he was also a real dickhead. Um, but yeah, the story of BlackBerry is very interesting. It's uh kind of tells you all about ego and hubris and how you know when your ego gets in the way, you make bad decisions, and a product that could have been truly, you know, it like it might be what it might have been what Apple, the iPhone is today, if they didn't let ego get in the way, you know.
SPEAKER_01Well, it was Blackberry was bigger than iPhones for sure at one point. I had a Blackberry, it never no, like iPhone kicked Blackberry to the curve. Um it did, but I'm saying before iPhone took off, yeah, yeah, yeah. Before it was bigger, I remember the two big ones were like Nokia and Blackberry, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, Blackberry is the first smartphone because Nokia was a smartphone and Motorella, but Blackberry was the first true smartphone where you can use data for email and texting and social media and stuff like that. Um, and then iPhone came out, and forget it. I mean, uh Blackberry ceased to exist practically shortly after that. Uh, but yeah, uh, it's a great except for our friend David, who still has a Blackberry. That's right, and he swears by it. He does. I think Blackberry makes up one percent because when the movie ends, it has you know the text that tells you what happened to all the characters, and one of the things it says is Blackberry is now one percent of the smartphone market, so we can all say that David's a one percenter.
SPEAKER_01They do some other things too, right?
SPEAKER_00Blackberry, if well, the interesting the interesting thing about Blackberry is that the security, blackberry security is actually better than iPhone and Android. So if let's say honestly, most governments should be using a Blackberry as opposed to an iPhone. Everyone in government uses an iPhone, but it should be Blackberry because the security encryption is better. Um, but the iPhone's just too popular, yeah. Um, so aside from that, I watched all four seasons of succession, blew me away.
SPEAKER_01You never saw it before, and you saw you watched all four, all four.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_01Starting from starting from the first episode, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Jeez, and I flew right through it. It's it's up there with Breaking Bad, it's a great show. I could incredibly I watched, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I watched maybe the three or three or four of the first of the first season, and I couldn't get into it. My people like it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, my thing is that the characters are so despicable. It was hard for me to you know care about the characters, but eventually I did. Um, as despicable as they were, they were just so interesting. It's sort of like Hannibal Lecter. You know, he's a despicable character, but he's so interesting. You can't help but to keep watching.
SPEAKER_01It felt weird. I remember watching it. It felt like this is not realistic. They're acting to each other.
SPEAKER_00Well, they're not like a real family, you know. That's a thing.
SPEAKER_01And I was just like, I just couldn't take it seriously how despicable they were, I think, to each other.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what it's based on? No, it's based on the the Murdochs, Rupert Murdoch and his children. Who they and you know, Rupert Murdoch owns Fox News and uh the Wall Street Journal, so it's based on that. Um, but yeah, I can see how it might not be for everybody because the characters are so despicable that you just get turned off. Um, I also watched all of the this season one of It, Welcome to Derry. And I wanted to make sure I watched it because uh, and I mentioned this in the previous episode. I am going to a horror convention with my friend Arnie um next weekend. It's in Orlando, it's called Spooky Empire. And Robert England, who played Freddie Krueger, he's gonna be there. Uh Brad Durof, who is the voice of Chucky, he's gonna be there. A whole bunch of people in horror movies are gonna be there, and including uh many people in the cast of It Welcome to Dairy season one, they're gonna be there. So I'm pretty excited about that. Uh, I watched um the movie Christy, which has Sydney Sweeney playing the uh the boxter, the the boxer Christy Martin. That was really good. Uh I Sydney Sweeney kind of earned my respect as an actress. She was really good. Um, but Ben Foster kind of steals the movie. He plays her husband/slash coach, and he's Ben Foster's one of our greatest actors, but I don't think he's as well known as I'd like him to be, but he's a great actor. Um, I watched uh Daredevil Born Again, season two, which was great. Oh my god, if you're into Daredevil, they finally like it's it it it the way Daredevil was on Netflix, Disney Plus tried it for season one, and it was like okay, but there's a whole thing with what happened behind the scenes that made it impossible to be at the level of Netflix. But season two, it's at the level of Netflix. I loved it. And uh Ready or Not, which is another movie with Samara Weaving, uh, comedy, horror, loved it. And finally, I I'm going on and on and on, but I also watched uh The Punisher One Last Kill, which is only 45 minutes long. It's I thought it was gonna be a moving, but a movie, but it's only 45 minutes long. Um, but I liked it, it was very violent though. Oh, oh, I'm sorry, one more, one more. I saw a horror movie called Skinema Rink. Have you heard of this? No, is it about hockey? I mean rink. No, oh, yeah, no, no, but no, it's not about hockey. Skinema rink is a horror movie. I want I want to talk to our friend Mary about Skinema Rink because I'm sure she's seen it. I'd love to get her thoughts on it. It's weird because there's no real plot to speak of, and honestly, I don't know what happens because it's more about atmosphere than story. So it'll have like a close-up of a wall, and then you just hear kids' voices in the background, and it'll be like that for six minutes, and you're like, What the fuck is going on? I have no idea what I'm watching, and then it'll cut to like a close-up of a chair, and then it'll cut to Legos, and then it'll cut to a man sitting. I'm sorry, a woman sitting on a bed, but you see her on the back, she's sitting on the bed with her head down, and you'll hear a kid's voice saying, Mommy, where is daddy? So it's like really creepy, but I have no idea what the fuck it was about. I have no idea what I watched, but was it creepy? Absolutely. So, yeah, skin of Marink. I definitely want to talk to Mary about that because she is our horror movie connoisseur. Have you watched anything cool?
SPEAKER_01I I watched uh Project Hail Mary yesterday.
SPEAKER_00I watched that too. I watched that about like last month. I really liked it.
SPEAKER_01I kind of liked it. Okay, but I felt like this uh this idea of an astronaut stuck in space by himself has been overdone. Way too, it has been done a lot, yeah. Yes, you know who did it the best was Gary Oldman in Moon. Was it no? It wasn't Gary Oldman, it was uh Sam Rockwell. Sam Rockwell and Moon. Yeah, you know who directed that movie?
SPEAKER_00No, David Bowie's son. Wow, yeah, that is I'm shocked you saw Moon. I didn't I don't know a lot of people who saw that movie.
SPEAKER_01I thought Moon was I I really like Sam Rockwell. I like Gary Oldman too, and I and I confused them.
SPEAKER_00Uh I don't know how you confuse those two. Well, they kind of look similar.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they they both look similar when they're scruffy, yes, although one's American and one's British.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true. But that that is a really good movie.
SPEAKER_01Moon, yeah, Moon's amazing. But Project Hail Mary, I thought it was good, although uh again, I think it's overdone. It was it was done with Matt Damon as well. I think the Martian, right? He was by himself.
SPEAKER_00Well, the Martian, okay. The Martian was based on the book The Martin, the Martian, written by Andy Weir. Andy Weir also wrote the book Project Hail Mary.
SPEAKER_01It really yeah, so he's definitely got a astronauts by themselves, yeah. Yeah, I and then I I just felt it like the you know, when he met the the alien, it it was it was a bit strange how he was like behind the wall. It was like, Where is this? I I never understood where they actually were.
SPEAKER_00I think they're on his ship, and like the the alien, well, there was the rocket ship behind there was the alien ship, and then there was the little tunnel in between, and I think most of the time was spent in the tunnel, in the tunnel, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It was in and it got really technical with that astro stuff. I want to say astro glide, but it definitely says it definitely was not Astro Glide, although that was also in the package I got from Amazon.
SPEAKER_00Wink wink. I'm so funny.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, it was okay. Yeah, I enjoyed it, but you know.
SPEAKER_00My only complaint about the movie, because I love when movies are based on real science. That's one of the things I appreciated about Interstellar, which I love, my favorite movie of 2014. And it's one of the things I loved about The Martian. Andy Weir, who wrote the books that who wrote the books that was based on The Martian and uh Project Hail Mary, is that he bases everything on real science. But where they failed in the movie, I believe, is that in the movie it seemed like they were able to talk to each other very quickly. Like all of a sudden they're able to communicate. In the book, it gets more in-depth into how they learn and figure out how to learn each other's languages. And in the book, it's really interesting how they do that, but in the book, they kind of gloss over it. And I get it, you know, it you can't get into the movie. They gloss over. Yeah, I'm sorry, you're right. You're out of the way.
SPEAKER_01But in the movie, it was in the movie, it was uh they didn't understand each other, and then all of a sudden, like five minutes later, they did. I'm like, wait, how did that happen? Exactly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in the book, it gets it's it's makes much more sense in the book, uh, but also the book is much more technical, so I don't know if it's for everyone. Um, but I just wish they got into it in the in the movie. But when it comes to movies, uh, they they have to make it shorter for time and this and that. It would, I think it would have worked better as a maybe a a mini-series on Netflix.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I just didn't think it was that great. It was, you know, I'd give it like a 7.2, maybe. And uh what I was disappointing, you know. Let me see, let me pull it up here. Um, IMDB has it ranked at 8.3. Anything ranked that high to me is should be an unbelievable movie. You know, 8.3 is is in the top 250 movies all time on IMDb, and that is not a top 250 movie to me. Yeah, you know, like other movies that were that are 8.3 are classics. I I think I think the ratings now though are very skewed, um for whatever reason online. Maybe it's just a lot more young people that are on uh that are online, and I don't know. I just feel like uh hopefully this this doesn't uh offend anyone, but you know, teens, maybe people in their 20s, they um most of them or or more so than us, I think, are you know, they just have different tastes, they like quick things, they like the plot to be explained a lot quicker. Uh you know, they like a lot more just special effects versus stories.
SPEAKER_00Movies are being made differently now because of that demographic. Now they're making movies where they explain the plot like sporadically throughout the film because they figure people are looking down on their phones and they're people are so distracted now, you know.
SPEAKER_01I read about that, how they are how they're they're having to they're they're re-explaining the plot many times, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's because of people's distractions. And since their attention span, like our attention span, our generation's attention span is much longer than the younger generation, like younger generations, they they're not going to be able to sit through The Godfather. Like you and I think it's the best movie ever made, and it's a great movie. And it's weird to me because they can sit through Avengers Endgame, but I think again, Avengers Endgame is a very different kind of movie, something that's more involved and more dense. It's like The Godfather, for example, that they can't sit through it, and it's depressing. I'm my my nephew Santino, he won't sit through Interstellar, and I think that's one of the best movies ever made.
SPEAKER_01But let me tell you some other movies on IMDb that are close to the same ranking. So Project Hail Mary is an 8.3. Okay, Raiders of the Lost Ark is an 8.4. Just 0.1 better. Yeah, are you fucking serious? The lives of others. You ever seen The Lives of Others? Amazing movie. It's a it's a German movie, okay. Um, just an amazing movie. That's an 8.4. Uh Sunset Boulevard, which is a classic 8.4. Ready for my close-up, Mr.
SPEAKER_00Deville.
SPEAKER_01The Shining 8.4. Wow. Inglorious Bastards 8.4. Like, come on, Inglorious Bastards was unbelievable. Uh, yeah, none of those movies are goodwill hunting 8.4. How is goodwill hunting on the same level as Project Hail Mary? Coco 8.4. Come on. I like Project Hill Mary Brave Fucking Heart is 8.3.
SPEAKER_00I like Project Hail Mary, but no, no.
SPEAKER_01If Project Hail Mary is an 8.3, Braveheart is a 12.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Braveheart. Mel Gibson is a controversial figure right now. I saw him at MegaCon. Uh American Beauty 8.3. Once upon a time America, 8.3. I'm gonna give you what yeah. Once upon America, the director's cut of Once Upon America is one of the best movies ever made. Heat 8.3. Heat 2 is coming out. I I did see that.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's what I'm saying. Like, it's just it's it's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_00Like, John, just a heads up. It looks like it's time to go. Okay, on none intended, but I do want to end it to make sure that you know what? Can I just tell people you're going to get a haircut?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, look at this. Look at this mop.
SPEAKER_00I would love to have your mop, John.
SPEAKER_01Do you want me to have the uh barber save the hair in a bag and I'll bring it over to your house?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll see how that looks for your toy. Maybe you should go to Turkey. Why you and Brad to get a hair transplant. You haven't seen all these guys going to Turkey for hair transplants?
SPEAKER_00That's like the I am happy with my bald head. I don't I have no desire to do propecia or get hair hair transplants. I like how I look with a bald head.
SPEAKER_01People are going to Turkey, they're like, it's like the big thing lately. Yeah. I don't know why, but like that's the place to get hair transplants. Okay, Vanessa's brother-in-law is thinking about it. No, Vanessa's brother-in-law. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Interesting. Okay. Well, we can make maybe we can do an episode on that, a diversion episode. Male pattern baldness. Uh, okay, so John needs to go get a haircut. So we're gonna end this here. Um, before we go, let's uh remind everyone once again please like, subscribe, catch us on social media at vegans talking shit. And uh, and everybody, we are out of here. Bye, everyone.
