Dusty Smith has been a soldier, an attorney, a city councilman—and for 26 years, an outspoken critic of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Raised in a devout multi-faith Christian home, Dusty’s faith collapsed after a tragic loss, and though a Book of Mormon literally fell from a bookshelf to start his conversion, his love of debate and deep dive into church history eventually turned him against it. He left the church angry, became a devout Catholic, and swore he was done for good.

But God wasn’t done with him.

Through a string of “coincidences” too perfect to ignore—a miraculous priesthood blessing that healed him instantly from swine flu, a long-distance love story, a pen-pal friendship with Elder L. Tom Perry, and answers to questions that haunted him for decades—Dusty found his way back. In 2015, after 26 years away, his testimony returned, and even President Dieter F. Uchtdorf shared part of his incredible story in General Conference.
