Ep 067: From Logic to Light: How Zoe Plzak Found Community, Faith & Truth

Sheila Layton Episode 67

What happens when a logic-driven, science-minded student realizes she’s… mad at God?
For Zoe, that moment changed everything.

Zoe Plzak (@itszoezap) is a Christian content creator and a math PhD student at the University of Utah — but she didn’t grow up religious, never had a church routine, and was raised by a father who was a staunch atheist and valued reason over faith.

Through her teens, Zoe followed that path. Her identity revolved around academics, achievement, and “what makes sense.” But when she finally got to college — the goal she’d been aiming for her entire childhood — she hit a wall: Who am I now? What’s the point?

That identity crisis became the catalyst God used to nudge her toward something more.
A whisper in her mind: “You should go to church.”
A longing for belonging.
A hunger for meaning deeper than grades and goals.

She found a Christian community that welcomed her before she even had real faith, and like the Parable of the Sower, those relationships helped her roots grow. Her logical mind understood that faith takes time. So she started intentionally: reading scripture, praying, trying. Even stumbling. But trying again.

Then came the breakthrough — the moment she realized she was angry at God.
And with that came a realization that reshaped her entire worldview: “If I’m mad at God, then God must be real.”

And if He’s real… then His commands, His promises, His love are real too.

Her first major act of faith? Giving up alcohol for Lent — countercultural in college, but life-changing for her.

After graduating and moving from Boston to Utah, Zoe was suddenly surrounded by loud religious opinions — especially about the Latter-day Saint faith. She investigated those claims intellectually, logically… and found them dangerously inaccurate. When she pushed back, she was shunned for even questioning.

So she walked into an LDS ward one Sunday on her own.
Instantly, something was different.

Everyone participated.
Everyone served.
Everyone welcomed her.

One woman took her in, invited her to her home, introduced her to missionaries, and helped her find answers. Zoe did the research herself — every question, every concern — until she knew both spiritually and intellectually that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was true.

And then she chose baptism.

Today, Zoe believes seeing the hand of God is essential because “introspection matters.” When we look back, we can see the gentle ways He guided us — even when we didn’t know Him yet.
