Sermon - Jeff Raines - Known By Our Scars [John 20:24-29]
Do you try to hide your scars? None of us can get through life without them. Today’s scripture prominently features the disciple Thomas- often known as doubting Thomas. Thomas is a straightforward person, not prone to metaphor or flowery language. Thomas wanted to see Jesus’ scars.
Revelation 21:3-5 holds a promise- that the Lord will dwell with us, that He will wipe away tears and abolish death and make all things new.
As seen with Jesus’ resurrected body, though, our scars might remain with us.
Our scars tell important stories.
Our scars show where we were hurt.
Jesus couldn’t have been a savior without the scars.
Scars show where we’ve been healed.
Seeing Jesus’ scars had a profound effect on Thomas.
Reflect this week:
How has God worked for healing in your life?
How can your testifying to that healing help other people? Who needs to hear about what God has done in your life?
Jesus bears his scars in glory. We can offer our scars to the Lord along with everything else- as part of the story of how God loves us, heals us, and saves us. Thanks be to God.
