In this episode, we sit down with Greg Taylor, a faith-driven tax strategist and founder of Taylor Tax Strategy, to unpack what it really means to steward money with wisdom, not just hustle. We break down the difference between a tax preparer and a strategist, and why real estate investors, business owners, and Kingdom-minded leaders need more than someone to file forms—they need someone who helps them make proactive, principled moves.

But this episode goes far deeper than deductions and depreciation. We talk about defining your number, aligning your business with your personal values, giving with intentionality, raising financially aware kids, and seeking God’s direction in every major decision. From short-term rental loopholes to the Augusta Rule, Greg shares practical strategies you can implement this year—without losing sight of what matters most.

God calls me to give to my church at the 10 % level. For me, that's just kind of something that's settled in my heart. It's not something I would ever tell somebody they need to settle there to because I don't think it's clear. think Jesus came to give a lot of freedom. And so I want to respect that for other people. But I think there's a calling on the church to be responsible for that. I think there's actually a calling on me to be responsible for giving above that.

Welcome, Greg. Appreciate you doing this shortly after tax season and ⁓ hopefully this will help de-stress you. Speaking of tax, I mean, you're a tax strategist, you own Taylor Tax Strategist. So I mean, I guess my first thing is, I think you're the only tax quote unquote tax strategist I've ever met in person. What is a tax strategist versus just a normal accountant or CPA or anything?

Absolutely.

Yeah. So I often get asked by people, ⁓ what is the biggest piece of tax advice you would give to a new business owner? And I always say, no, the difference between a tax preparer and a tax strategist, a tax preparer is going to prepare your taxes. They're going to take the information you give them at the end of the year, and they're going to put it on the tax forms.

And they're maybe going to ask you a couple of questions or check about a couple of things to see if you did something that might save you money. For example, they might say, did you buy any?  clean energy products, whether a vehicle or solar or whatever. ⁓ but a tax strategist is going to be somebody that you're checking in with throughout the year and they're going to say, Hey, you have a profit and we need to find a way to get rid of that.

So let's put solar on your house or let's look at a clean energy vehicle or let's look at investing in real estate, you know, so on and so forth. And so a strategist is more of a proactive, ⁓ and a tax preparer is more of a like, here's what happened this year and we're going to you know, do the work and then a lot of them will give some suggestions kind of wrapping up for next year. You could do this. So I'm not criticizing, you know, it's just kind of a different role.

How do you learn one role versus another? it just more OJT or is it a, mean, you've got to school off of the same things, correct?

Sure. So a lot of it is on the job training, like you said, ⁓ but there is, there is certainly, there are different, you know, credentials that you can get different things like that. ⁓ for me, ⁓ I have chosen to focus pretty strongly in on specific niches. So basically real estate investors and blue collar workers, and blue collar business owners is where we typically stay. And so, that has allowed us to focus in on those. I'll have people come up to me that, you know, I had a guy come up to me and he does drop shipping.

And he was like, Hey, can you help me? And I was like, we can do your books, we can do your taxes and I can give you some basic strategy, but I don't know drop shipping. So I don't know the ins and outs, you know, of that specific business. So I think it's more the on the job and, frankly, picking a niche that's really going to work for you. Now the bookkeeping, I can do that for any company. You know, that doesn't matter. I can do the tax prep for any company, but that strategy, you really need to know the types of businesses that you're working with.
