Little Thoughts: Why Respect Matters in Sports Culture. Cam Newton & Shedeur Sanders
What happens when an OG big dog in the football world clashes with the new guard? Sean dissects the face-off that erupted between Cam Newton, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter during the Colorado vs. UCF game over the weekend. Cam's blunt comments on Shedeur's lack of a defining victory ignited a midfield standoff that didn't sit right with Little. He also tackles the frustrating reality of how off-the-field controversies can overshadow careers, advocating for a re-focus on the impressive legacies of athletes. Is that the reason Sanders and Hunter felt they could act the way they did? Whether you're a die-hard college football fan or intrigued by athlete legacies, this episode promises to be a thought-provoking ride through the highs and lows of sporting excellence.

no ketchup, no ketchup what's good my people welcome into no ketchup. Sports talk v Chicago little thoughts. When I got something weighing heavy on my heart, I'm gonna come on and talk about it, and something that occurred this weekend in central Florida got me a little perturbed. I'm talking about Cam Newton, shador Sanders, travis Hunter situation. I guess you could call it that. I'm going to jump right into it. We're going to try to keep these brief Little thoughts.
Speaker 2:You know what I'm saying Double meaning, little thoughts but I don't want to go too long-winded on it. But I got to touch on this. So if you didn't see it it, if you don't know what I'm talking about, cam newton the only cam newton that that is walking the earth so you know exactly who I was speaking of was, uh, went down to central florida to watch colorado versus ucf. Shadur sanders the buffs one of the hottest storylines smoking in college football. Of course you know primetime Deion. We're not hard to find Yada, yada, yada. If you want to talk and find Deion Sanders and his son and his other son and his other son, they're easy to find over in Boulder, colorado. And then they have a guy in Travis Hunter who is top of the board when it comes to Heisman consideration, when it comes to the draft board, shador and Travis are expected to go high in the first round. We'll see how that ends up shaking.
Speaker 2:So the buffs coming in, people thought they weren't going to, they weren't going to win a lot of games. They're now four and one through five. So they're back being a big, big hot button talking point. Have they beat anybody of record? Have they beat anybody worth really chirping about? Not yet. I think that's a big thing and that's kind of what Cam Newton said prior to this UCF game. Cam Newton came out and said Shador Sanders doesn't have a signature win that he can hang his hat on, amongst a couple other things talking about Shador Sanders, colorado Prime and the gang not having a real win to hang their hat on. But this was more pointed at Shador Sanders, shador gives me Cam vibes in some ways.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 3:And I say this in relates to, obviously, quarterback but I'm going to do it my way and I don't give a damn what y'all say.
Speaker 2:And it's like a lot of people might not like.
Speaker 3:Cam. But it's like I've got to do it my way and I don't give a damn what y'all say. And it's like a lot of people might not like Cam, but it's like I gotta respect him. I got to you know what I'm saying?
Speaker 1:Yeah, look, my whole thing with Shador is this you followed him since he was at Jackson State, correct?
Speaker 3:Yeah, even when he was in high school.
Speaker 1:Right, correct, yeah, even when he was in high school. Right, yeah. What win can he hang like? What performance can you?
Speaker 3:hang your hat on.
Speaker 1:Can you hang your hat on in college?
Speaker 3:Yeah, the only thing I have was like that TCU or that Nebraska game. His first year this year.
Speaker 1:We're talking about TCU, and they ended up not being a good team.
Speaker 3:Yeah, nebraska last year was so poor, ain't like he beat, that's true. And you can't say well you was at Auburn, he was at Colorado. It was like Auburn wasn't no favorite to win. Before you got there, nobody was picking Auburn to win the national championship For sure. I don't even think they even thought y'all was going to have a winning season before you got. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:It was motherfuckers on our team that didn't even think that we was capable of.
Speaker 3:That's facts. And y'all was in the tougher division. My bad boy? Hey, you know what I'm saying, my bad man, he ain't no boy. That, my bad boy? Hey, you know what I'm saying, my bad man, he ain't no boy. That's cool. I'm just saying, though, you said so much, I'm not even saying it. What I'm not even saying, man. All I'ma say is this and don't get it mistaken, there's Beeman over there.
Speaker 1:Be careful with them. Comparisons Ah.
Speaker 2:My bad boy, don't hurt me. So of course, shadur, because it's clear that, no matter what, anytime anybody says anything about Colorado, deion Sanders, primetime, the Buffs, the program Shador and one of my favorite athletes of all time, Deion Sanders they hear it, they talk about it, they have conversations about how you know it's us against the world. Everybody's hating on us. We just got to go out there and keep winning games and this was no different. Shador Sanders heard what Cam Newton said, so he was going to feel some type of way about it and it's been very clear. Anytime Shador Sanders' name comes up in a negative way, some of it's warranted, I believe. Like the Colorado State quarterback came out and said we'll see come game day and then tried to dap Shador up after the game. Shador wanted nothing to do with it. I think that's a little different than this situation.
Speaker 2:Cam Newton then shows up to UCF, goes out to midfield as Shador Sanders is warming up. Here's the video. He goes out, tries to show some love quote unquote to Shadur Sanders. Shadur wasn't feeling it. Here's the clip. It's pretty clear how Shadur felt about Cam coming over. Clearly heard the context and him talking shit in Shadur's eyes about him not having a win to hang his hat on. Now you're at midfield on my Saturday, my game day trying to dat me up. I don't appreciate it. I'm not really trying to feel it and if you're just listening to this on Apple iPods, I encourage you to go watch the clip on YouTube at no Catch-Up Podcast on YouTube to get a visual for what I'm getting at. Shadur essentially blows him off, waves him off, walks to the end zone to continue to stretch, but it's very clear like he wasn't going to sit there and have a hee-hee, ha-ha conversation with Cam Newton. Now my problem, and what kind of perturbed me is, if you watch this clip, it's pretty clear to me that Cam Newton is trying to get out to midfield to show sadur sanders some love. Hey, you're the up-and-coming guy, you're the man right now. Good luck today, whatever.
Speaker 2:Whatever he was gonna say, but it was clear that cam was coming over there to have a positive show love type of conversation with Shadur before the game. Should he be doing that as the legend? Maybe, depending on the situation, but I understand trying to show love and it seems like that's what he was trying to do. But maybe and maybe he didn't realize Shadur was going to act that way, or maybe he didn't realize. Him and Shadur had an issue. Shadur made it clear he didn't appreciate what he was saying and then that was why he reacted that way. But then, cam, after you get blown off at midfield, you're the legend big dog, you're the man, you're the guy. You then, when Travis Hunter comes out to do warm-ups, you then try to show him some love and he blows you off too. Do warm-ups. You then try to show him some love and he blows you off too.
Speaker 2:Here's the clip of Travis Hunter and Cam Newton's interaction pre-game Colorado UCF. Now look, a big part of this for me that makes everything about all the interactions extremely lame is because there's cameras all around at all times. Cam Newton's got a guy recording his every move, trying to get content. Shador and the Sanders guys are all about content, getting that rolling off the field money, I understand it, getting attention for the NIL, for the University of Colorado, but nothing ever feels genuine anymore. It wasn't like Cam was pulling up to Shadur or Travis like yo go get him. If you misunderstood what I was saying or you didn't appreciate what I was saying, we can have a conversation about that too. But how I see it is Cam's trying to get some content going up to the now it guy in Shadur Sanders pregame and chopping it up with him. He's having it be recorded and everything. There's cameras all over the place. They're not network cameras, they're personal cameras. Shador is then thinking I didn't appreciate what you said and I got a guy following me for content and it would probably look better for my content and me and potentially even go viral if I blow Cam Newton off. So I'm going to do it that way.
Speaker 2:Travis Hunter pregame. This is closer to the game time but Cam still has that Cam his content guy with him. He's still watching this whole interaction with Travis. Travis is not going for it, he's waving him off and it's almost like for the internet. It would be cool for me to blow off Cam Newton instead of show Cam Newton love. To blow off Cam Newton instead of show Cam Newton love, especially with his boy over here recording every word and every visual aspect that's happening pregame. Oh and, by the way, I'm still playing. I'm the man. You're the old washed up guy. I think that's part of the mentality of the whole thing, including the extra element of everybody trying to shoot content, including the extra element of everybody trying to shoot content. But regardless of all that, shadur Sanders and Travis Hunter should be showing Cam Newton some more respect.
Speaker 2:In my opinion, we're talking about a Heisman Trophy, winning national championship, first overall pick. Nfl MVP that won the NFC had a Super Bowl appearance. Travis Hunter in that same game did the Heisman pose against UCF. Cam already has one of those and he was beating Alabama on the road to win it 4,500 total yards, 54 touchdowns, 13-0 a national title. That was the run that he went on to win the Heisman. Travis Hunter's not there yet. He's doing the Heisman pose. He's going both ways. I understand that. He's a sensational player. He's that guy. Right now he's doing the Heisman pose against UCF. Cam Newton won the Heisman winning back-to-back weeks against Georgia and then going to Tuscaloosa and beating Alabama, then beating Oregon in the national championship by two touchdowns and it wasn't even that close.
Speaker 2:Let's do a little reminder on Cam Newton and the guy that he was in college. I just laid out all the accomplishments. Let's talk about who was around him on that Auburn team. Gene Sizzik was the head coach of the Auburn Tigers that year, in 2009,. Before Cam got there, they were 8-5. Cam showed up in 2010. Auburn Tigers went 14-0, won the title. I just laid it out. In 2011, cam leaves, they go back to 8-5. In 2012, two years after winning the national title, with Cam Newton at the helm, they go three and nine. Gene Shizik is never a head coach again in college football.
Speaker 2:In that 2011 draft, on a team that won the national title, they only had two first round picks Cam Newton went number one and then Nick Fairley, the D tackle, went number 13. Auburn didn't have another player in the first round until 2014, when Greg Robinson went, who wasn't even on that national title team with Cam Newton in 2010. And then Dee Ford, who was on that national title team but only started one game and barely played Before Cam Newton showed up. They hadn't had a first round pick since 2007. Ben Grubbs. So what I'm getting at is Cam showed up with a lame duck head coach, mediocre talent, went 14-0 and won everything. Had the best college season as a quarterback all time. For me, joe Burrows is right there. He was sensational that year at LSU, but he also had unbelievable talent around him. We know Jamar Chase, justin Jefferson. We know the whole story out there at LSU.
Speaker 2:I hate, I hate, I hate when the off-the-field shenanigans off the field shenanigans the off the field talk around some of these living legend superstar athletes becomes bigger. The talk around them isn't about the accolades and what they accomplished. It's more about all of the other nonsense that is being talked about Cam Newton's hair, fighting kids at camp, getting waved off by Shador Sanders. That's a perfect example of what we're talking about. When Cam Newton's name is brought up now it's starting to lean shenanigans more than first overall pick, nfl MVP, heisman winner, national championship winner. Not many players have those accolades in the cabinet, in the cupboard, like Cam Newton. And if you ask the younger generation, when you bring up Cam Newton, start to veer that they're not bringing up the Heisman and all the phenomenal accomplishments he had throughout his career.
Speaker 2:Perfect example is Antonio Brown. When Antonio Brown's name comes up, it's all negative all the time. Now His CTE Brown. They talk about his Twitter handle. He has a lot of off-the-field stuff. I understand and I don't, and you know there's a lot of different things going on with that. I won't speak too much on that. But either way, when Antonio Brown's name comes up, we don't start talking football for three or four points and I hate that for Antonio Brown Six straight seasons and I hate that for Antonio Brown and any other athlete. Antonio Brown six straight seasons, 100-plus receptions, 1,200-plus yards and eight-plus touchdowns. He did that six years in a row in Pittsburgh. It was an absolute monster.
Speaker 2:So I wanted to talk on this because I don't feel like guys of the stature like Cam Newton should be on the field looking to dap up 19, 20 year olds. Show them love. Off to the side. Don't make it about content and all this other stuff going on. The cameras are there.
Speaker 2:We all know this Cam Newton being on the field at Central Florida and going up to give love to Shador Sanders and Travis Hunter and those guys both waving him off hurt my heart. Cam is one of those guys all time and all this off the field stuff is starting to take away from that. This is not just the only instance that I think is pulling away from the cam newton lure because he was one of the all-time greats when it comes to playing quarterback, especially at the college level. So those guys should be approaching cam Newton seeking him out. Cam, any advice? Cam, this Cam that it's the other way around and it really rubbed me the wrong way. Cam Newton and the rest of those guys should be treated with respect from his young fellows, because they're trying to be what Cam Newton has already done Little thoughts.
