Reaching Your Peak

Identifying Roadblocks

Jeff Miller Season 1 Episode 2

In this episode of the "Reaching the Peak" podcast, I, Jeff from Apex Leadership Development, dive into the essential elements that can either facilitate or hinder your personal and professional growth. I emphasize the importance of identifying a specific area where you want to see growth and setting a bold, actionable goal—one that might even scare you a little.

I discuss three critical factors that can impact your ability to achieve these goals:

  1. Do You Have the Right Tools? - Just like my dad, a carpenter who sometimes had to borrow or rent tools, you need to ensure you have the necessary resources and skills to reach your goals. I share my experience of joining the Maxwell Leadership Certified Team to gain the tools I needed for coaching and training.
  2. Are You in the Right Place? - It's crucial to assess whether your current environment supports your growth. This could mean evaluating your workplace or even considering a physical move to a location that aligns with your career aspirations.
  3. Do You Know the Right People? - Building a network of mentors and coaches is vital. I highlight how I draw inspiration from figures like John Maxwell and Malcolm Gladwell, even though I've never met them.

By addressing these three areas, you can better navigate the roadblocks that may stand in your way. If you need further guidance, feel free to reach out to me. Remember, my goal is to help you reach your peak! Thanks for tuning in, and I look forward to our next conversation.

All right, hey, it's Jeff here, Apex Leadership Development and Reaching the Peak Podcast. Came up with that name. Do you like that name, Reaching the Peak? I really like that. I just want to help everybody reach their peak. Might just shorten it to Reach the Peak, not sure, but anyway. last video I told you that I'd recorded something the day before I hope I can remember what I forgot to tell you was the reason I needed to remember it was just quite honestly the sound didn't work so technical difficulty technically it actually did not record so anyway I want to give you those thoughts that I had because those thoughts were around the things that are going to stop you from growing, okay? So you identified an area that you want to grow in. You identified a goal that you have. This is something that I want to achieve personally, professionally, any area of your life, health, whatever, mentally, whatever. You have an area that you want to grow in. You want to see growth in your life. You've identified that and you've also created it, I guess I should probably tell you, you need to make an action plan around that. They need to be actionable. I like Grant Cardone's method, like if you have a goal, 10 exit. So I don't like that smart goal. I don't like achievable goals. If you can achieve it, if it's something that's within your mindset that you think you can do, I've heard people say all the time that if your dream doesn't scare you, if your vision doesn't scare you, it's probably not big enough. So, you know get get a scary goal out there go for it You know if you haven't taken two steps the scary goal be to run a marathon, right? There's some action goals that you can set around that. I'm not a marathon coach. Trust me. You see me running. It's for tacos Okay So, but identifying the things that are going to stop you from hitting those goals. And let's be honest, if it were that easy, if it were so easy to say, hey, what are the things that are going to stop you from hitting that goal? Okay, there's going to be some obvious things. But if everything that's going to stop you is going to be obvious, then you don't need to listen to this video anymore. You need to press stop and you need to go do something. Bottom line. If it's that easy, if you see it that clearly, go do it. Don't even listen to me anymore. Send me a message and let me know that you did it. That's what I want to hear. But I do think that there are some things that we can identify that are going to be roadblocks in the way. Do you have the right tools to be able to do what you want to do? Sometimes there's things that I knew that I wanted to coach, speak and train, right? So I had to find someplace that had that, that could give me those tools that I needed to fill in the blanks where I didn't have them. There were some things that I had, some things that I didn't. So I joined the Maxwell Leadership Certified Team. Why did I join the Maxwell Leadership Team? There's no better leader, trainer, speaker out there than John Maxwell and the certification process that he gives is really great. So I picked up a tool in my life that's going to aid in what I want to do. My dad, he was a carpenter. He had a lot of tools. He didn't always have the tool for the job. Sometimes I'd hear him on the phone calling a friend. Hey, can I borrow your X, Y, Z thing? Your jibba bidget, right? I don't even know what – my wife would be the one to talk to about tools, not me. But he would borrow a tool. Sometimes he would have to rent a tool. Sometimes he would have to go buy it because he knew that it was going to be something to use again. But there were times in his life to do the job that he needed to do, he knew that he didn't have the tools to do it. So do you have the tools that you need? And then there's a whole line that we can get into talking about identifying those tools, where to find them and stuff like that. Not diving that deep into it. The other part of that is, are you in the right place to grow? If you want professional growth, is the company that you're working for Are they interested in your development? Are they interested in that goal? Have you told them about that? Do they know? Are you in the right place to see the goals grow? Maybe it's a personal, maybe there's something personally, maybe there's a shift that you need to make in your personal life as far as not just physically like where you live. I mean, there's some jobs that if you want them, you're probably going to have to move. You want to work in tech, you probably have to move to Silicon Valley, you probably have to move to Boston. Not that you can't work anywhere, but those are tech hubs, right? So Austin, Texas, tech hubs, right? I'm not advising tech people here, I'm just thinking it through here. Again, these are just my notes, and you're getting them, I'll give you the real raw Jeff, okay? Are you in the right place? Is there something that you need to move? Maybe it's moving yourself mentally. Maybe it's getting in the right mental space and you have to have a shift, a move mentally. But are you in the right place to move? So, do you have the right tools? Are you in the right place? And do you know the right people? This can be a whole other talk by itself. All three of these honestly can be a whole other talk by themselves. But do you know the right people? Are you connected with somebody that's a mentor to you? Do you have a coach? If you don't, I know a really good one. Hi, my name is Jeff and I'm here for you. I want to see you grow. I want to see you reach your goals. I want to see you get to where you want to be both personally and professionally in every area of your life. John Maxwell is a mentor of mine. I've never physically met John Maxwell to say hi. John, my name is Jeff. Never met him. Malcolm Gladwell is a mentor of mine. Never met Malcolm Gladwell. Guy Raz. I love Guy Raz. He's one of my favorite podcasters. Never met Guy. Listen to his podcast. Feeds me a lot, right? Adam Grant. I can go on and on and list for you and I have people that mentor me that don't even know that they mentor me. They've never met me. Probably never will, and I have different people for different things. If I want to listen to something, if I have a health thing, I ask my wife what her doctor says. Her doctor is an internet guy that always talks about health stuff. If I've got a question about that, I ask her what her doctor says. If I want to know leadership, I go to John Maxwell. So different things and different people. And by the way, this list that I'm giving you is just what I could tell you on my way to my next ride. It's not exhaustive, it's not conclusive, but it's a really, really good place for you to start. Do you have the right tools? Are you in the right place and do you know the right people? And I think if you have that going on, you're taking a step closer to achieving those goals because you've identified the things that are going to stop you, at least some of the things that are going to stop you from hitting your goals. If you need more, reach out to me. My name is Jeff Miller. I am with Apex Leadership Development. I also have this podcast, Rise to Your Peak, Reaching Your Peak, Reach the Peak. I think I'm just going with Reach the Peak here. I want to see you reach the peak, okay? So, that's it. Thanks. You have a great day. We'll talk to you later.
