In The War of the Worlds Book Two, titled The Earth Under the Martians, the narrator describes England under Martian control. He meets an artilleryman with grand but impractical survival plans and briefly takes refuge with a clergyman, who eventually goes mad. The Martians dominate the landscape with deadly machines, harvesting humans. Just as hope seems lost, the Martians mysteriously die—killed by Earth's bacteria. The narrator returns to a devastated but slowly recovering London, reflecting on humanity's fragility and resilience.
