Recorded live at the U.S. Trade and Development Agency's Civil Nuclear Energy Workshop, at the U.S. Embassy in London, this episode explores the global momentum behind nuclear energy and the international partnerships shaping its deployment. As the UK enters a new phase of energy policy, with a new Prime Minister and Energy Secretary, the discussion looks at the role nuclear can play in delivering energy security, meeting rising demand and supporting net zero goals.

Host Alex Wolfe speaks with William D. Magwood IV, Director General of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), about why nuclear is gaining renewed momentum. He discusses the lessons from past projects, rebuilding supply chains and skills, and why international cooperation will be critical to delivering nuclear at scale.

We also hear from Carl Kress, Regional Director for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), on supporting civil nuclear projects across Europe and Eurasia. He shares insights into growing interest in small modular reactors (SMRs), U.S. partnerships in Central Europe, and the importance of long-term collaboration to strengthen energy security.

Biographies

William D. Magwood, IV took up his duties as Director-General of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) in 2014. Previously, Mr Magwood was Director of the US Government’s civilian nuclear energy programme at the US Department of Energy (DOE). From 2010 to 2014, he served as one of the five Commissioners appointed by the US President and confirmed by the US Senate to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Carl B. Kress is Regional Director for Europe and Eurasia. As Regional Director, he and his team develop infrastructure projects of strategic priority in critical minerals, digital infrastructure, energy and transportation that position U.S. companies to partner with local public and private sector project developers. He also co-leads USTDA’s Worldwide Energy Industry Team, which has a particular focus on nuclear power and natural gas infrastructure development around the globe.
