A Penny for Your Thoughts: Lifting Shame & Building Community
“I am Ashley Pennington and this is “A Penny for your thoughts.” I am a wife, mom, and lover of all things Christ. As someone who has struggled with alcoholism and disordered eating, I have found healing and redemption through Christ who continues to move in my life. By using my personal story and testimony of faith, I want to connect with you. I want to create community during times of isolation. And Most importantly I want to validate you, in whatever season you find yourself. Let this be a place for you. A community for you. A place to conceptualize your thoughts. And a place for you to truly be you.”

Surrender It All
On this episode, I want to unpack this phrase with you” Surrender it all.” Because in full transparency, I am struggling with it. I surrendered to sobriety 6 years ago. We celebrated 6 years this past Sunday and it was so glorious to have a snow day, which by the way, we saw about a foot of snow here in IN and will be seeing more today. But with all of this surrendering to God, I have a deep rooted sense of needing to be in control.
It is ingrained in my brain. It is part of who I am. Or so I think. Right, I am a go-getter, leader, project manager. I can see the initial piece of the project and the end. The middle is the toughest for me. I want things to go quickly. I want to lean on my own understanding.
And while I know that God is in control, do I actually believe that 100% of the time. The answer is no. That’s what I struggle with. Fully believing that God is in control. Because I want to take the accountability on. I want to see the timeline through. I want it to be quick and on my terms. Not on his. God’s timing is everything and yet, I fail to see that all too often.
Matthew 7:7-8 reads, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you".
I know that the Lord provides, but I also know that I have to seek to find and knock and the door will be opened to me. I can’t just sit back and “hope for the best.” No, as an independent, realistic person, I have to have some skin in the game. And so that’s what I see here for you. Do you have a place in your life where your worry takes over? Maybe you feel restless about your finances, job security, relationship, child rearing? It’s so easy to say “Give it all to God” Surrender it all to God. But that’s so much tougher than it looks from the outside.
Today, my prayer for you is to listen. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for what God has in store for you. Committing to him and surrendering it all to him.
