5 Ways Social Media Is Ruining Your Faith

Episode 9

In this episode of Sunday Morning Matcha, I explore the complex relationship between social media and faith. Social media began as a tool but has evolved into something more powerful—a drug that shapes our thoughts, controls our attention, and influences our behavior. I share my personal story of how social media kept me prideful, selfish, and distracted from God, and how stepping away from it brought me a peace I hadn't known before.

I also break down five key reasons why social media is damaging our faith:

  1. Comparison – Social media breeds jealousy and makes us feel inadequate, shifting our focus away from gratitude.
  2. Distorted Self-Image – Unrealistic standards make us question our value, even though God has already declared us fearfully and wonderfully made.
  3. Worldly Influences and Temptations – Social media promotes materialism, lust, and selfishness, drawing us away from God’s truth.
  4. Exposure to False Teachings – The rise of misinformation and distorted gospels makes it harder to discern truth from lies.
  5. Division – Social media thrives on conflict and division, even among believers, weakening our unity and love for one another.

Ultimately, social media reflects our human nature—it’s not inherently evil, but how we use it matters. We must decide whether to let it serve us or control us. The Bible reminds us that we can only serve one master. Will you choose to serve God or the world?

Verses Used:

  1. Genesis 6:5 (ESV):
"The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."
  2. Matthew 6:24 (ESV):
"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
  3. Romans 8:7–8 (ESV):
"For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God."
  4. James 3:16 (ESV):
"For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice."
  5. Psalm 139:14 (ESV):
"I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."
  6. 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV):
"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'"
  7. Romans 12:2 (ESV):
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
  8. Ephesians 5:15–16 (ESV):
"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."
  9. Galatians 6:8 (ESV):
"For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life."
