The Theology of Sleep: Why God Designed Rest

Brandon Episode 10

What if I told you that sleep is more than just a time to recharge your body? What if God designed it to teach us something deeper—something about trust, peace, and His relentless work on our behalf?

In this episode of Sunday Morning Matcha, I share my journey from tracking sleep on my Apple Watch to realizing that true rest doesn’t come from blackout curtains or optimized routines—it comes from God. Sleep, as the Bible shows us, is more than a biological function. It’s a symbol of our dependence on Him and a reminder that while we rest, God keeps working.

We explore how God rested on the seventh day after creation (Genesis 2:2), not because He was tired, but to set a precedent for us. Isaiah 40:28 reminds us that God never grows weary, and yet He calls us to rest in Him, trusting that our salvation is secure.

You’ll also hear how God used sleep in the life of Adam when He created Eve (Genesis 2:21-22) and how Abram experienced God’s power and faithfulness while in a deep sleep (Genesis 15:17). These moments reveal a profound truth: God’s plans aren’t dependent on our efforts. Even when we’re asleep, He’s still in control, working everything for our good.

In today’s hustle culture, where staying up late and waking up early are worn like badges of honor, Psalm 127:2 challenges us to rethink our priorities. Chasing success through exhaustion is futile when God is the one who gives true rest—both for our bodies and our souls.

If you’re tired of striving, tired of anxiety, and tired of trying to carry everything on your own, Jesus offers you this invitation:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

In the end, the rest you’re looking for isn’t found in sleep trackers or perfect routines. It’s found in Jesus. And when you rest in Him, you’ll experience the peace, freedom, and joy you’ve been searching for.
