Black everywhere. I believe that black men, including myself, have failed. I think that black men have failed to set the authenticity standards of real black people. We have failed miserably. We have not lived up to the standards that Malcolm X talked about being black first, loving and supporting black people, marrying black people, procreating with black people, having all of your objectives be black. And I believe that this short piece will land with real weight. And I believe that this is a fair charge regarding black men. Black men hold significant cultural influence in black communities, and that influence carries responsibility. When black men consistently praise European hair textures, chase women with that so-called good hair, put straight-haired women on a pedestal in music videos, lyrics, and daily conversations. That sends a message louder than any social engineering campaign ever could. Black women hear it, black girls absorb it. The standard black men set through desire, through praise, through what they celebrate publicly shapes what black women feel pressured to present. My black brothers who fetisize straight hair, long weaves, a profumated European length, are light skin, have actively participated in reinforcing the same white gaze you that I have correctly identified in many of my short stories. Authentic black manhood requires setting standards that honor blackness completely, curly, kinky hair, dark skin, broad features, all of it when a black man consistently and visibly celebrate his woman's natural texture, hair textures, calls it beautiful without qualifications, refuses to rank black women by proximity to European standards. That creates real cultural counterpressure. The natural hair movement in America gained serious momentum, partly because black women built it themselves, often without waiting for black male validation. And that speaks to the resilience that I am talking about when I call it divine, kinky, cally, spiraled, electromagnetic, black hair texture is divine. It is a God-given divine feature. It is how we identify who is nine ether and who is not. Sisters did not work largely on their own. And my point stand here. Black men who wear their coils proudly carries a responsibility to extend that same standard outward, to praise what they practice, to preach what they practice, to celebrate natural black beauty in black women with the same energy they bring to celebrating it in themselves. Accountability and authenticity have to move together. Without it, we black men have failed ourselves, our black women, our black children, our black families, our black communities and the world. We have failed to set the standards of blackness. Instead, we have chosen to do blackness malpractice every fucking day and look for that blackness malpractice in the women that we partner with. I do not hate, I elevate.
