Grafted In, Part 1: Are We Showing Up for Yah?

What does it really mean to be grafted in? In part one, we look at Romans 11 and Ephesians 2 to ask a hard but necessary question: if we have been brought near through Yeshua, how can we say none of Yah’s ways apply to us?

Why Grafted In Matters

Shalom, y'all. Welcome back to Light of the Scroll. I'm Jennifer. And today we're gonna have a part one and part two series type thing. Because I tried recording it and it went way long and I wasn't even done. So I semi-cut it in half. We'll see how that works out. So today we're discussing what it actually means to be grafted in. Because I believe this is one of those phrases that a lot of believers say, but we don't always think about what it actually means. Because we say we're grafted in, and that we're part of the family of God, and that we belong to his prom promises. We say we're children of Abraham by faith, and that we serve the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and the God of Israel, but then somehow, after saying all of that, modern Christianity turns around and says, But none of that applies to us for being in the Old Testament.

And just sit with that for a moment.

Because how does that make sense? How can we say we are grafted in and then say the root does not matter? Because that's what the I'm gonna do quotation, because Old Testament, there's a piece of blank paper separating the Old Testament from the new. You take out that piece of paper and you have one cohesive book, as it should be. And so how can we say we're grafted in when the roots don't matter? How does that tree survive? It doesn't. Not when the roots are dead. How can we say we have been brought near and then say we don't need to know what we were brought near to? Or how can we serve the God of Israel, but then act like his instructions, his covenant, his promises, his sabbaths, the appointed times, his set apart way of life are somehow irrelevant to us. That's not grafting in. That's taking over the tree and creating a new one. There's a difference. Because when Paul talks about being grafted in, he is not saying the wild branches get to redefine the tree. He doesn't say that the wild branches get to cut off the roots and create a new religion, or that the wild branches get to decide what part of Yah's word matters and what parts do not. He's saying the wild branches were brought into something that already existed. They were not brought in to replace it or to erase it, they were brought in to receive nourishment from the same root. Romans 11 is where we see this so clearly because Paul is speaking to Gentile believers and he tells them not to become arrogant toward the natural branches. In Romans chapter 11, verses 17 through 18, Paul says that if some of the branches were broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others, and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not consider yourself superior to those other branches. And then he says, if you do remember this, you do not support the root, but the root supports you. That should humble us. Because Paul does not say, you're grafted in, so now the tree becomes whatever you want it to be. Or you are grafted in, so now forget everything Yah spoke before. He definitely does not say you are grafted in, so now obedience is legalism. Or Sabbath is bondage, clean and unclean is outdated, and the feasts are Jewish extras. No. He says you were grafted into the olive tree, and the root supports you. So the question should become: what is the root? Well, it's not Rome and it's not church tradition or denominations. It's definitely not man-made theology, and the root is certainly not replacement theology. It's not, we have always done it this way, or Yahs covenant, the root is Yah's covenant faithfulness. It is promises. It's his word, it's the Messiah, it's his people, it's the kingdom, it is his instructions, it is the redemptive

Romans 11 And The Root

plan he has been working from the beginning. And Yeshua did not come to plant a brand new tree that contradicts the one Yah already planted. Yeshua came as the promised Messiah of Israel. He came from the tribe of Judah. He came through the line of David. And he came in fulfillment that was written in the Torah, the prophets, the writings. He taught from scriptures. He quoted Moses. He certainly kept the Sabbath and the feasts. He did not come as a lawless Messiah. He came as the living word. And we know this. Number one, because John 1 tells us that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Then in John 1.14 says, the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. So if Yeshua is the word made flesh, why would he ever believe, why would we ever believe he came to abolish the word that is his? That is where this gets serious because a lot of people want Yeshua as a savior, but they don't want Yeshua as the master. They want the blood, but not the walk. Forgiveness, but not transformation. They want promises, but not covenant faithfulness. People want to be grafted in, but they don't want the root to correct them or nourish them or shape them or prune them. But grafting in is not just a nice spiritual phrase. In real life, when a branch is grafted into a tree, that branch has to receive life from the tree. It has to be joined to the tree. It has to grow from the nourishment of the tree, and it does not stay wild and independent while claiming the benefits of the cultivated root. If it is truly grafted in over time, it becomes it begins to bear fruit connected to that tree. And that's one thing we are told to be set apart. If you walk into any crowd, it is very hard for you to pick out the believers in God.

You have to ask people you don't see their fruits.

As people in a covenant relationship with the one most high, people should be able to look at us and be like, there's something different about that person. And as they continue to watch us, they're like they see the fruit of why we're different. Not that we think we're better than anybody else. They just it's we should be able to see the fruit of Yah's people. But 99% of the time you can't.

You have to ask people, do you believe in God? Why should we ask people if they believe in God? We should know. Because you're not bearing the correct fruit.

And that's what people miss. Being grafted in is not taking the name of Yeshua and continuing to live however you want. Being grafted in is being brought into a covenant relationship with the God of Israel through Messiah. It is being brought near when we were far off. It is being adopted into the household of Elohim. It's being given access to the

Yeshua And The One Story

promises, not so we can trample them, but so we can walk in them. Ephesians 2 is another huge passage for this. Paul says to remember that at one time the Gentiles were separate from Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, foreigners to the covenant and promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Messiah Yeshua, those who were once far away have been brought near by the blood of Messiah. Brought near to what? That's the question nobody wants to answer. Brought near to a lawless religion? Uh no. Brought near to a replacement church that says Israel does not matter no more? Nope. How about brought near to a faith that says Yahweh commandments are burdensome and outdated? Yeah, no. Paul says they were once excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenant of promise. But now they have been brought near. That means the blood of Yeshua did not bring Gentiles near so that they could remain disconnected from Israel. It brought them near so they could be part of the household of God. And then Paul says in Ephesians 2, chapter 19 that they are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of his household.

That does not sound like none of it applies to us. That sounds like you have been brought into something holy, so learn the ways of the house. Because sometimes we keep this conversation stuck in theology, but we do not let it confront our hearts. So many people say, I just want God to show up in my life. Well, here's a strong question for you. Do you show up in his? We want y'all to show up in our finances, our healing, our marriage, our children, our job, our emotions, our prayers, our battles, our plans, and our dreams. We want to give, give, give, give, give, or get, get, get, get, get, get, giving, giving, giving, giving, giving, giving. We want him to show up when we are scared, when we are overwhelmed, when we are lost, when we are grieving, when we are confused, and when we need a door opened. And he is merciful. Yes, he's kind, he hears, he sees, and he is faithful, faithful.

But at one point, do when do we show up for him?

Do I show up on the Sabbath or do I tell him that my schedule is more important? Do you show up in obedience or do you tell him that your feelings are more important? Do you show up in repentance, or do you tell him that your sin is just your struggle and he should understand? Do you show up in his word, or do you only show up when you need him to fix something? Do you show up in prayer, or do you only cry out when you have when you run out of every other option? Do you show up in holiness, or do you treat grace like permission to keep living in rebellion? Or do you show up in the things he said are appointed, or do you cling to traditions that came from man and then wonder why you feel disconnected? Because this is where we need to be honest. A lot of believers feel like Yah is far away. But it's them who have moved away from everything he said was set apart. We've moved away from the Sabbath, moved away from his appointed times, moved away from his instructions, moved away from his definition of clean and unclean, and moved away from his standard of holiness, and moved away from his word. And then we ask, why do I feel like God's not showing up?

But the question is not where is God?

It should be, where am I? Because he did not move. He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. His character

Fruit That Should Be Visible

has not changed. His holiness hasn't changed, and his definition of sin definitely has not changed. His desire for a set-apart people has not changed, and yet his love has not changed. Nor his mercy, nor his covenant faithfulness. But we have been taught to believe that because Yeshua died for us, our response does not matter. We have been taught that obedience is optional. We have been taught that if we talk about commandments, we're trying to earn salvation. And we've been taught that if we talk about Yah's instructions, we're moving backwards. We have been taught that if we keep the Sabbath or eat clean or celebrate the feast or desire holiness, that we are being too Jewish. But what does that even mean when we say we follow a Jewish Messiah who taught from the Hebrew scriptures and kept the commandments and came for the lost sheep of the house of Israel? That's what Yeshua says. Yeshua says, I came for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Go look it in Matthew. Go find it. Go read it.

What does that even mean when Paul says we are grafted into the olive tree? What does that mean when Ephesians says we were once far off, but now we have been brought near? It means something, and we need to stop acting like it doesn't. Because if we are grafted in, then we are not our own tree. We are not our own source. We are not our own standard. We are most certainly not our own authority. And we belong to him. We receive him. We should be shaped by him. We should be pruned by him. We are called to bear fruit that matches the root we claim to be connected to. Yeshua said in John 15 that he is the vine and we are the branches. He said, if we remain in him, we will bear much fruit. But apart from him, we can do nothing. He also said that every branch that does not bear fruit, the father prunes. So it'll be even more fruitful.

So pruning is not good.

But also pruning doesn't feel good. Pruning takes away part of us that we want to cling to, but that's not the good part we should be clinging to. Sometimes y'all starts showing you things that you never questioned before. Maybe that's how you came to this podcast. Sometimes he starts exposing traditions you inherited. Sometimes he starts making you uncomfortable with things you used to enjoy. I can most certainly attest to this. Sometimes he starts pulling you away from environments you used to fit into. Yep, absolutely. And he starts to convict you about what you watch, what you celebrate, what you eat, how you speak, how you spend your Sabbath, how you treat people, how you handle anger, how you handle money, how you handle your marriage, and handle how you handle his word. And we have a choice when that pruning comes. We can either say, yes, Father, teach me your ways, or we can say, that does not apply to me. But how many times can we say that does not apply to me before we have to admit that we are not letting him lead? Because if everything Yah said does not apply to us, then what exactly are we following? If Sabbath does not apply, or his food instructions, or his appointed times, his commandments, if his standards do not apply, or his correction, or his word before Matthew, then what are we left with? We are left with a version of faith that uses Yeshua's name but rejects his father's ways. And Yeshua never taught that. That is why the phrase grafted in has become more than something we say. It should become something we understand, but if we understand it, we will not come in with arrogance. We will not come in telling the root what it means. We will not come in saying we want the promises, but not the instructions. We will not come in saying we want the Messiah of Israel, but not the God of Israel's ways. We should come in with humility. We will say, Father, I was far off and you brought me near the blood of Yeshua. I was not born into this tree, but by your mercy you grafted me in. So teach me how to live as part of your household. Teach me what matters to you. And teach me your Sabbath. Teach me your appointed times and your commands. Teach me how to walk as

Do You Show Up For Yah

That's not legalism.

And I think this is where people get confused because they hear obedience and then immediately think someone is trying to earn salvation. But obedience is not the root of salvation. Obedience is the fruit of salvation. We do not obey so Yahweh will love us. We obey because He has loved us. We don't obey to buy our way into the household. We obey because Yeshua brought us into the household, and now we want to learn the ways of that house. That's a big difference between earning and responding. If a child obeys a loving father, that child is not trying to earn the right to be his child or his love. They are responding to the relationship. They are being trained, they're being corrected, they are learning the ways of the family. So why do we act like Yah's children should not have to learn Yah's ways? Why do we act like his household has zero instructions? Or very few? Why do we act like being brought near means we get to remain unchanged? That's not how Scripture speaks. Scripture does not call us to be brought near and stay wild. Scripture calls us to be transformed, to repent, to walk in truth.

It calls us to be holy. It calls us to obedience from the heart.

It calls us to bear fruit. And that fruit should reveal what tree we are connected to. Because again, the wild branch does not support the root. The root supports the branch. And if the branch is truly receiving from the root, over time there should be evidence. That does not mean everyone is at the same place. It does not mean everyone learns everything overnight. It does not mean we walk around condemning people who have not seen what Yah has shown us. And it does not mean we become prideful or harsh or arrogant. Paul literally warned against arrogance in Romans 11. But it does not mean we stop making excuses once Yah shows us the truth. It means we stop saying, well, that is not what I was taught, as if our upbringing is the final authority. It means we stop saying, my pastor said, as if a pastor can override the word. It means we stop saying that was for the Jews when Scripture says we have been brought near and made fellow citizens. We stop saying, God knows my heart when our heart is refusing correction. Because yes, Yah does know our heart. And that should make us worry a little bit because He knows whether our heart is surrendered or stubborn. He knows whether we are struggling and repenting or rebelling and justifying. can say outwardly that God knows your heart here's he really knows the truth of your heart so if he knows that you are thinking something and you push it away he knows he knows that doesn't apply to me you have set apart days but that's only Jewish He knows whether we are asking for truth or only asking for permission to stay comfortable and this is why we have to ask ourselves hard questions do I really want Yah's truth or do I only want Yah to bless what I already believed? Do I really want to follow Yeshua or do I want the version of Yeshua that does not confront me? Do I really want to be grafted in or do I just want only the benefits of the tree without actually receiving correction from the root? Do I really want Yah to show up in my life or do I just want him to show up when I need something? Because relationship cannot be one-sided think about this

Obedience As Fruit Not Payment

in a physical relationship right now with the person you're living with. If a spouse only showed up when they needed money or help or comfort or attention but ignored the relationship the rest of the time would you call that healthy? If someone said I love you but refused to honor anything that mattered to you would question that love. If someone wanted the benefits of family but refused the responsibility of family we would see a problem. So why do we think Yah receives that from us? Why do we think we can claim his son, his promises, his protection, his comfort, his mercy and his kingdom, but then reject all of his ways or the majority of them and only keep a few. That's not covenant faithfulness. That is entitlement. And I know that sounds strong but sometimes we need strong because the deception has been gentle for way too long. It has sounded loving and freeing it sounded like grace it sounds like God understands it sounds like do not be religious or that was for the Jews. It sounded like Jesus fulfilled that so you do not have to and it sounded like just love God and love people. But biblical love is not lawless. Yeshua said it in John chapter 14 verse 15 if you love me keep my commands. It's that simple we're the ones who complicate it. We make it complicated because we have been taught to separate love from obedience. But in scripture love and obedience are connected not because obedience earns love but because love produces obedience and that is what we are going to keep building on in part two because we cannot understand being grafted in if we do not understand that love for Yah has always been connected to walking in his ways. But for today we're going to stay with the foundation being grafted in means we were brought near. Being grafted in means we do not support the root the root supports us. Being grafted in means we were joined to something y'all already established it means that we do not get to redefine the tree. It means we are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens and members of a household and if we are members of his household then we need to stop acting like the ways of the household don't matter this household it has a king it has instructions there are boundaries there are appointed times it's a pattern the household has a way and if we belong to him then we should want to know what matters to him so today before we go even deeper into Matthew 5 James 1 John Revelation and what obedience looks like as fruit I want to leave us with this question. You want Yah to show up in your life but are you showing up in his are you showing up in prayer repentance obedience are you opening up his word to actually read what it says are you showing up on the days that he set apart are you showing up with the heart that says Father teach me your ways or are you only showing up when life falls apart and you need him to fix something? Because Yah is faithful he's merciful patient kind he is a good good father but he is also holy and he did not graft us in so we could stay wild he grafted us in so we could receive life from the root be transformed and

bear fruit that honors him so let us stop saying none of that applies to us when scripture says we were brought near. Let us stop calling the root irrelevant when claiming to receive life from it. Let us stop asking for the promises while rejecting the past let us stop treating obedience like bondage when scripture says love and obedience go together.
