Why You Keep Quitting Workouts After 50 (It's Not Willpower)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Why you keep quitting workouts after 50 has nothing to do with willpower and everything to do with these 4 parts of you.
If you've started and stopped more times than you can count, this episode is your answer. Cam breaks down the real reason consistency feels impossible in midlife using her 4 Body Framework: the physical body, mental body, emotional body, and spiritual body. When even one of them isn't on board, the whole thing stalls. Most programs only talk to one.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
→ Why cortisol recovery is slower in perimenopause and why stacking hard sessions backfires
→ How your unconscious mind (processing 11 million bits/sec vs. your conscious mind's 40) keeps running old identity stories
→ Why emotional load is physiologically compounding your hormonal shift
→ What "inner knowing" actually means and why you quit programs that ignore it
→ Why Cam coaches demo style only (and how it creates alignment instead of compliance)
THIS IS FOR YOU IF...
You've told yourself "I just don't have discipline" but deep down you know that's not the whole story.

You started again. You downloaded the Midlife method app, and you got your shoes out, and you told your husband, it's going to be different this time. And for a few weeks, it was. You were showing up, you were soaring that good way, you know, that way that you feel alive and you're really proud of yourself. And then one morning, you woke up and you just didn't do the workout. And then it happened again and again until, you know, every time you open your phone and you saw the app that you were completely ignoring, and the shoes were by the door, and they were just collecting dust, and somewhere in the back of your mind was this voice saying, I'm just not someone who sticks with it. And I want you to stop right there, because that voice is completely wrong. You didn't quit because you were lazy. And it wasn't because you don't have discipline. It was because something inside of you was not lined up. And today, I'm going to show you exactly what that is, using what I call the four parts of you. Hey, there. I'm Cam. I'm a strength and a midlife coach for women in midlife. I'm trained in neuro linguistic programming, hypnosis, strength training. And I have been obsessed with this one question for a while. Why do smart, motivated women keep stopping? Not the start part, but the stopping part. Why is this happening? You know, we've got the starting part down. You've probably started 17 times by now. I've probably started 17 times by now. So let's talk about the stopping part. Because once you understand it, I mean, like, really understand it, you don't have to do it the same way again. If you're new here, please hit subscribe. I put out a new episode every single week on strength and mindset and what it actually takes to feel strong in this body in midlife. Okay, so let's get into it. Here's the thing I want you to understand before we go any further. Willpower is not a character trait. It's actually a resource. And in midlife, with our hormones shifting and our sleep disrupted and that mile long to do list, it is a resource that is stretched out really thin before you ever decide to work out. So when your motivation ran out, I want you to know that's not failure. It was actually information from your body to you. Your body was telling you something. And today, we're going to figure out what the heck she was saying. See, there are four parts of you that need to be on board for that change to actually stick. I Call them the physical body, obviously, the mental body, emotional body, and the spiritual body. You can also say energetic body for spiritual body if that feels better for you. And when one of those bodies or parts is saying no, the whole system stalls. And most programs, they only talk to your physical body. So your physical body has been giving you feedback and we were taught to ignore it. So let's start there. This is usually where women start, am I right? You're getting dressed, you don't like the way your clothes fit, and you say mean things about your physical body. It's obvious, it's the most visible thing, so it makes sense to start there. Here's where most programs totally get it wrong in midlife. They were designed for a body that isn't yours anymore. Picture this. You're three weeks into a new program. You're doing great. You're doing five days a week, you're pushing hard and you're proud. And then you start noticing that you're exhausted. Like by Wednesday, your sleep has gone off the rails, your joints ache. Like going up and down the stairs is horrible. And your hunger is through the roof and you're craving everything. So what do you do? Do you push harder? Because that's what we've been always told to do, like when we were younger. But then did you notice the crash? Here's what's actually happening. Research shows that women in midlife have a higher cortisol baseline and a slower recovery from cortisol spikes than we did when we were younger. Now I want to say something about cortisol. The right amount of cortisol is actually anti inflammatory and it is your get up and go. The problem is we have these spikes and it takes us longer to recover from the spikes. So when we stack hard session after hard session, it's not just tiring. Your body literally cannot clear the stress load before the next stress loads hits. So what used to feel like challenging now just feels like too much. And it's not because you're weaker. It's just because our rules have changed inside of our body. Your body's not quitting on you. It's actually communicating with you. And the program you were following didn't know how to listen to your new body. And this is why I program only 10 minute minis or two 30 minute workouts a week for my clients. It's not because we're going easy. It's actually because we're smart. And recovery is part of the midlife muscle plan. And that is where the results are actually built. So Part two, that's our physical body. But what about part two? Your identity hasn't caught up yet. So the second body is your mental body. And this is actually where your beliefs live. You know the stories, your identity. And here's the thing about identity, it gets really sticky. So if you have spent years thinking of yourself as not a gym person or someone who always starts and stops, your unconscious mind is going to keep finding ways to prove that that that is true. Not because it wants to sabotage you, literally, because that's its job. It runs on what it's told to do. And here's the science behind that. This is mind blowing. Your brain processes about 11 million bits of information every sing. Your conscious mind, on the other hand, can only handle like about 40 bits of information. So when your unconscious identity is running the old story about who you are, it is literally louder and faster than your conscious mind. That's not a weakness. That's how your brain's wired and the wiring can be rewired to actually get what you want. When this body is out of alignment, you feel it like as an internal tug, like, part of me wants to do this and part of part of me wants to do that. That's not a weakness, that's just incongruency. You see, two parts of you are pulling in opposite directions. So picture this. You've had a great week, You've been consistent, you feel good. And then someone comments, you've been really committed lately, and something in you flinches. Like it feels too soon to like claim your success or celebrate your win. Like you're waiting for yourself to mess it up. Well, that flinch, that's actually your old identity running the show, so that's a good thing. So now you know, the shift I work on with my clients is not about motivation. It's actually your identity, who you say you are. You're not trying to get to do something. We are helping you become someone. Someone who. This just makes sense because I move my body every single day, so that's who I am. When you change at the identity level and you tell your brain that, your body just follows along. Hey, if this is landing with you and you're sitting here thinking, okay, this explains so much about myself. This is exactly what this channel is for. So hit subscribe so you don't miss the rest of this series. I'm building out a whole playlist about strength training for women over 50. That actually makes sense for your body and your mind. Okay, back to it. Part 3. You were emotionally full before you even started. The third part of you is your emotional body. And this one most programs completely ignore. Here's what I see. Often a woman decides she's going to get serious about her health. Something happens in midlife and we're like, I got to pay attention. So she carves out the time, she plans the workouts and she really means it. And then, you know, life happens. Her mom calls with a crisis or her kids need something, or the dog threw up, or her boss sends an email at 9pm when her partner is struggling, you know all the things and suddenly that workout that you had planned, you know that one thing on the whole to do list that she was actually doing for herself is the first thing to go. Am I right? Because she's been running on empty for so long she doesn't even notice it anymore. Everyone else needs me, so cross myself off and I'm going to go take care of the emergency. And here's why that matters so much in midlife. Specifically, elevated cortisol suppresses the hormone signals your body needs to produce the estrogen and progesterone. In perimenopause, those hormones are already declining. If you're in post menopause, they're at it. They're your lowest level. So that chronic emotional load is not just exhausting, it's actually compounding your hormonal shifts that already is happening. Your body's not betraying you, is actually just carrying too much. The way I see it is like burden, pressure on the system, under eating, over exercising, too much life stress, all the things that's pushing down on the system. Your body's carrying too much. Working out does not feel like self care at that point. It just feels like one more thing to fail at. Am I right? So picture this. It's 6am Your alarm goes off and you plan to work out. But you were up to midnight because you were still carrying yesterday's stress. And the thought of doing one more thing on that to do list makes you want to cry. So what do you do? You hit snooze. And then you feel guilty about hitting snooze when you just really need some sleep. Please hear this. It's not laziness, you're just depleted. The answer is not to push through. The answer is to notice what your emotional body is carrying and build workouts that actually fit your real life, not the life you were written when. Everything was in. Life was like perfect Part four, you were following someone else's programming. The fourth part of you is your spiritual body. Now I Know, that word can feel really big. So let me make it really concrete for you. Your spiritual body or your energetic body is your inner knowing. It's the part of you that knows something's off, even when you can't explain why. It's your intuition. It's your sense of alignment and purpose. It's this feeling of, this is me versus this is not me. And here's where most fitness programs really fail. Women in midlife. They tell you what to do. They hand you the plan and say, Monday is legs, Tuesday is upper body, Wednesday is rest. Follow the grid. Here's the spreadsheet. And there's no you in that grid. There's no, how does this actually feel in my body today? There's no room for a day of like, I'm exhausted, I think I should take a walk instead. Or, you know, your whole week falls apart if you don't follow the chart. So you follow it for a while because you know you're a good person and you want to follow through. And it works until it doesn't work and then you feel like you failed the program. But I'm here to tell you that the program actually failed you. That's why I only coach demo style workouts. I show you the movement, I explain how to do it. I give you tons of modifications in a real body. Somebody asked me on Instagram if it's an AI me working out. Oh, no, it's me. I talk you through how it should feel. I help you connect to what your body is actually experiencing, not just what the rep count says. Because when you feel something, when you are working, I mean really feel it, you don't want to stop. That's not willpower. That's actually alignment. Your inner knowing has been trying to tell you something every single time you quit. Your inner knowing was saying, this isn't right for me. And guess what? Your inner knowing was absolutely right. So here's what I want you to take away from today. You didn't quit because of you. You quit because something in the program didn't fit all of you. Your physical body needed more recovery, not punishment. Your mental body needed a new identity and become the woman who takes care of herself, not just more motivation. Your emotional body needed space. It did not need pressure. And your spiritual or energetic body needed to feel something. Not just follow something, but know that this is right for you. So guess what? When all four parts of you are on board, the consistency stops feeling like discipline and it just feels like common sense. That's what we build inside my coaching program, the Four Body Breakthrough. It's a 16 week one on one program where we work on all four parts of you. Yes, strength training is part of it, but really what's at the base of it is the beliefs and the emotional patterns and the inner knowing that makes everything last. If you want to know more, the link is in the description. And if today's episode gave you a light bulb moment, share it with one woman who needs to hear this. She's out there right now thinking that she's the problem and she's not. Thanks for being here and I'll see you in the next episode.
