Welcome to the Course Mentors podcast. I'm Odette, I'm Amy. It is a Myth Buster episode where we go through one big myth, one thing that we hear all the time that we wish we could just bust. That could be holding you back from starting an online course. Absolutely, let's get into it.
Speaker 2:The myth of today is, let me ask you, deb, myth or fact? Do I need the most perfect tech stack to get started, and what if I'm?
Speaker 1:afraid that is a myth. You do not need really fancy or really specific tech to get started with what? If I'm afraid that is a myth, you do not need really fancy or really specific tech to get started with your online course. It's actually quite a basic setup. It's more about the strategy. Should I be afraid? You should not be afraid. The reason, and I'm just going to, straight out the gate, tell you the reason. You shouldn't be afraid, because this is going to give you a light bulb moment. I promise.
Speaker 1:The platforms are not built for tech savvy creators. It's not people who build websites from scratch that use these platforms. They build things from scratch, they code and they do all the super nerd stuff. They're built for the everyday person because if they weren't built for people to jump in and just use them, they wouldn't make any money. These platforms couldn't exist because they need the everyday person who wants to jump in and just use them. They wouldn't make any money. These platforms couldn't exist because they need the everyday person who wants to jump in and make an online course are you saying they're built for dummies?
Speaker 1:they're built for dummies.
Speaker 2:They're built for dummies and you know what. They're so easy to use. They should be. They have a learning curve and that's inevitable. Everything has a learning curve. Literally every single like driving driving.
Speaker 1:If you pick up a guitar has a learning curve. Every single, every single like driving, oh driving.
Speaker 2:If you pick up a guitar, it has a learning curve. Every single thing in the entire world Podcasting has a learning curve. Every single thing that you do ever will have a learning curve. But it's like a day or two.
Speaker 1:It's like a day or two. It's like a day or two. You just jump in, get comfortable in there and there's so much support and they really like, step by out, how to use the platforms, because they want to keep you on the platform.
Speaker 2:So, first of all, I shouldn't be afraid of all the different tech platforms?
Speaker 1:Absolutely, there's not that many and they're built for you.
Speaker 2:Okay, all right, all right. All right, all right. Next, do I need a big fancy tech stack to get started? I want to be a millionaire. I want to be a quadrilinear course creator. Do I need the fanciest, fanciest tech stack that's ever existed?
Speaker 1:No, it's not going to make a difference between six figures and seven figures. That's so exciting. It is. You need like good, user-friendly tech that's reliable, with good support when things go wrong in an update.
Speaker 2:We like to say in the online course school that we are tech agnostic because we just say whatever kind of tech works works. All of those big platforms, if you've looked at them all right, like if you've looked at Kajabi or Teachable or Thinkific or whatever I guarantee you they are all the same within 1% variance they're all pretty much the same. They all do pretty much the same thing. They're all competing with each other to add as many features as they possibly can and they're all pretty much the same. No matter which one you choose, it's going to be fine it's going to be fine.
Speaker 1:A lot of people come to us with a tech stack already and they say hey, I'm actually already on mailchimp. I know you guys talk about active campaign for emails. Can I stick to mailchimp?
Speaker 1:I'm really comfortable absolutely, you can yeah we don't just say go and use this system. We say here's the strategy, this is how you fit your system into it. Of course, because what's important and what we're amazing at, if I may say so myself, is is our strategy behind it. Yeah, of course. Yeah, some people, you know, if they don't have the strategy, they'll rely on the platforms like Kajabi to tell them what to do Exactly, whereas we start with strategy first. Okay, we want the flow to look like this. Okay, this is how we work our systems to do it.
Speaker 2:Exactly, exactly. Of course, all the money is in creating those really really high value customer journeys, both pre-sale and after sale, and that can be done on any platform. Really realistically, it's about the strategy and how you implement it, not what you're choosing to directly do. But if you are tossing up between different platforms and you're saying, how do I know what it is that I need for my platform, we tell people every single day to start out building a rough course curriculum of what it is that you're actually trying to achieve with your course. First of all, figure out what it is you're trying to achieve. Then try and get that down on paper into like a rough kind of curriculum. You know that you want a community. You know that you want to be able to do live sessions every week and you know that you want to do maybe six or seven videos per week and then an audio file, something like that. You know what I mean. Take it on a piece of paper and go to each platform and just check that that platform can do that. When you're going through the list, go oh yeah, they have video modules. Okay, yeah, they have a Q and a hosting ability. Okay yeah, they have a community embedded and decide, okay, yep, that can fit it and that fits within my budget.
Speaker 2:They all have varying different price kind of points, but for the most part they'll probably sit around a hundred dollars a month. That's kind of like the average. See if that's like, okay, cool, this one's actually 75. That one's 95. I'm going to go with the $75 option. Sure, whatever, right, nice and simple, it doesn't have to be insane. And then what I want you to do is log into that platform and give it a go for 24 hours, not like 24 hours where you're just sitting at a computer, you don't leave it. I just mean a day. You know, give it a day, see if you like it, and then just choose it and stick to it. It doesn't matter.
Speaker 1:Absolutely. They all have free trials. So if you're tossing up between a couple, you know you've looked at your inclusions. This looks good, that looks good. Can't really tell the difference. Get the free trial on both, jump in, have a play see what talks to you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think that it's a to be a make or break decision, because if someone doesn't like the course platform, they won't like your course, they won't find it easy, they won't do the course and then you fail. But that's actually not what happens at all. That's the myth and I'm busting it right now. The course platform is nothing more than a website. It's a house, really, just for your information, what people are going to love, what people are going to invest in? What people are going to love, what people are going to invest in? What people are going to complete? What people are going to be obsessed with? Is you, your teaching, your delivery, your magic? Not if the video is two millimeters to the left or right, 100%.
Speaker 1:So it's totally normal if you've been thinking, oh my God, I don't know what setup I need. I'm getting all of these platforms advertised to me Because as soon as you start looking at one, you're going to get a lot of ads for all of them. So totally understandable if you've been confused and it's just like totally jargon for you. But the truth is it doesn't matter. It's not going to be the difference between six figures, seven figures, and it definitely shouldn't hold you back from starting your online course. All right, we'll leave it there, guys. Myth busted. No excuses please for starting your online course. We'll see you in the next one. Bye, bye.
