Send us a text

Trigger warning: This episode discusses themes of alleged malpractice, death and unsafe cosmetic procedures, which some listeners may find distressing.

In this episode, we dive into a deeply serious and sobering topic: the tragic death of a young woman following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure. This incident sheds light on the wider dangers of the cosmetic surgery industry, particularly in the ongoing debate between medical and non-medical practitioners.

We’ll unpack the alarming facts around the BBL, one of the most dangerous cosmetic procedures with a 1 in 3,000 mortality rate—making it one of the riskiest surgeries out there. We’ll also examine the lack of regulations in the UK beauty industry and what it means for the safety of patients seeking aesthetic procedures.

I will also open up about my own experiences of aesthetics treatments and what plastic surgeries I have had.

Join me as we talk about the key differences between medical and non-medical practitioners in the world of aesthetics, why regulation is long overdue, and what you need to know to stay safe if you’re considering any cosmetic surgery.

Finally, we’ll also look at ways the industry can protect clients better, and offer some practical tips on ensuring your safety when considering cosmetic enhancements.

***BBL involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks, but it has one of the highest mortality rates in cosmetic surgery, largely due to the risk of fat embolism (where fat enters the bloodstream and blocks blood vessels).

Many clinics in the UK offer BBL, but regulations and safety standards have become stricter due to rising concerns. Several professional bodies, such as the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), have warned against the procedure. In 2018, BAAPS even called for a moratorium on BBL surgeries due to safety concerns. However, it is still legally available at certain clinics, but they must adhere to strict guidelines, and patients are strongly advised to weigh the risks.

If you're considering BBL surgery in the UK, it's essential to research accredited surgeons, understand the risks, and ensure you have a full consultation to discuss safety measures.*** - Though I state they are illegal, this was not 100% correct.
