Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome back to the East Coast College Admissions Podcast, the show where we break down the college admissions process, share strategies for success and give students and families the clarity they need to approach this journey with confidence. I'm your host, lu Patra, and I'm here to be your guide through the challenges, opportunities and excitement for preparing for college. I've missed you all and it's been a little while since our last episode way back in April. But we are back and I'm so excited to kick off a brand new season with you. First, I want to take a moment to thank you. During this break, this podcast hit a major milestone Over 50,000 downloads. That tells me just how much this community values real, clear and actionable admissions advice. I couldn't be more grateful for your support. Now it's September and you know what that means seniors, it's officially application season. The essays, the deadlines and recommendations it's all happening and I know it can feel overwhelming, but don't worry.

Speaker 1:

In today's episode, I'll be giving you practical strategies for staying on top of the process and keeping your sanity intact. But that's not all. I want to also share some exciting news. Over the summer, east Coast Admissions officially partnered with GYEF, the Global Youth Excellence and Leadership Program. This is a UN-affiliated initiative helping students build skills not just in academics, but also in leadership, global awareness and even in emerging fields like AI and technology global awareness and even emerging fields like AI and technology. I will talk about what that partnership means for our students and why I think it's such a powerful addition to the college prep journey. So grab a notebook or just sit back and listen, because we've got a lot to cover today.

Speaker 1:

Let's start with the class of 2026. Seniors, this is your moment. The Common App opening on August 1st in September is the time to get serious. I want to pause here and give a special shout out to a couple of my students who embody the kind of dedication it takes to get through this process. First, anwita, who is working tirelessly on her BSDU applications. For those who don't know, bsdu programs are incredibly competitive, combining undergraduate studies with a pathway to medical school. Anwita has been balancing school and essays and everything that it takes to get this application process going, and I couldn't be more proud of her focus and resilience. And then there is Finnegan, who is pursuing a really exciting combination of majors, urban planning and film studies. It's not every day you see those two together and it's exactly the kind of interdisciplinary curiosity that colleges love. Finnegan is doing the hard work of building a balanced college list, crafting essays and making sure every piece of his application reflects who he is. To Anwita Finnegan and every senior listening, keep pushing forward.

Speaker 1:

This is the season of details, deadlines and sometimes doubt, but you are building a story that matters and, trust me, all that effort is going to pay off. Here are the key priorities you should be focusing on right now. Number one finalize your college list by this month. You want a balanced list of rich, targeted safety schools. Make sure your list isn't just based on rankings but on fit, academic programs, campus culture and financial aid. Number two polish your essays. Your personal statement should tell your authentic story and your supplemental essay should answer the why ask clearly. Don't just copy and paste generic answers. Admissions officers want to see that you've done your research and know how you thrive at their college.

Speaker 1:

Number three request recommendations If you haven't already ask your teachers and your counselors right now. Give them plenty of time and provide a worksheet or notes to help them highlight your strengths. Number four keep up with deadlines. Early action and early decision. Deadlines are just around the corner, usually November 1st or 15th. Build a calendar so nothing slips through the cracks. Last but not the least, you have to stay balanced. Don't let the application process consume you. Continue your extracurriculars, spend time with family and friends and take care of yourself. Admissions officers don't want bent-out students. They want balanced ones. Remember, your application is not just about test scores and GPAs. It's about showing who you are, how you've grown and how you contribute to the college community.

Speaker 1:

Now I want to pivot to something I'm really excited about Our new partnership with GYEL, the Global Youth Excellence and Leadership Program. For those who don't know, with GYEL, the Global Youth Excellence and Leadership Program. For those who don't know, gyel is a UN-affiliated initiative designed for students in grades 6 through 12. What makes it so powerful is the way it goes beyond traditional academics. Yes, it sharpens your academic skills, but it also builds leadership, global awareness and even exposure to fields like AI and emerging technologies. So I know you are asking why does this matter for college admissions? I'll tell you why Because East Coast colleges and really selective colleges everywhere aren't just looking for good students, they are looking for future leaders. Aren't just looking for good students, they are looking for future leaders. They want students who can think globally, who understand the big issues of our time and who have already started to take initiative in their own communities. Through this partnership, our students will have access to programs that combine rigorous learning with opportunities to lead, innovate and connect globally.

Speaker 1:

Imagine being able to show an admissions officer not just your grades, but also your role in a UN-affiliated leadership initiative. That's the kind of standout experience that makes applications shine. But, more importantly, programs like GYEL prepare you for life beyond admissions. College is just the beginning. Building confidence, leadership skills and a global perspective those are the assets that will serve you long after the admissions letters arrive. So I'll be sharing more about how we integrate GYEL into our work with students in upcoming episodes, so stay tuned for that.

Speaker 1:

But let's zoom out for a moment. Whether you are a senior applying this fall, a junior starting to plan, or even a younger student listening in, here is the big picture. Success in college admissions isn't just about checking the boxes. It's about building a story that reflects your growth, your passions and your potential. That's why programs like GYAO are so meaningful, that's why mindfulness and balance during the application season are so important, and that's why I encourage students to think of admissions not just as an end point, but as a launch pad. So here's my challenge to you this month For seniors finish your drafts, finalize your list and stay disciplined with your timeline.

Speaker 1:

For juniors use this fall to visit campuses, explore majors. Think about what kind of story you want to tell next year. For parents support your child, but don't overwhelm them. Encourage independence. This is their journey, not yours. Above all, remember that you can do this. Yes, it's stressful, but with the right support and a clear plan, you can come through this process. Not, it's stressful, but with the right support and a clear plan, you can come through this process, not just with acceptance letters, but with a stronger sense of yourself.

Speaker 1:

As we wrap up today's episode, I want to say how glad I am to be back behind the mic with you. All the breaks this april give me time to reset, reflect and build new partnerships, like the one with gyal, that will make the season of the podcast richer than ever. Season two is going to be bigger, better and more impactful. I'll be bringing on expert guests, diving deeper into specific application strategies and sharing the kind of insights that will help you not just survive admissions but thrive in the process.
