So, moving into baseball, we got to talk about something that we hope that everybody's had a Dodger kind of weekend this past weekend, because the Dodgers we know they've been scuffling they got swept by the Angels, which nobody saw that coming. Yeah, Because normally they do pretty well against the Angels, but they went ahead and they swept up the Padres. Now, mind you, this is a big thing because the Padres had the lead in the series by a half game going into it. Now Dodgers are like, I see you, they passed them. So not only did they pass them, but now they got the Rockies, who've been a scuffling team, for a series with them, but then they go down to San Diego and have a series with the Padres again, so they have a chance to really up their lead in the division. So if you had a good weekend, we hope it was as good as the Dodgers weekend. Oh yeah.
Speaker 1But talking about feeling good, I'm kind of becoming a Dodgers fan over here.
Speaker 2Talk about feeling good, man. The Yankees had a feel-good kind of game the other day. The Yankees were playing against the Rays and actually it's kind of funny because the Rays are playing the Rays. The Rays are playing in the facility that the Yankees used as their spring training, because Tropicana Field that the Rays normally play in is still screwed up from the last hurricane, so they're playing somewhere else. But this recent game Kind of started out like this Deep center field.
Speaker 3Pereira, back On the track At the wall. See ya, a long home run, high off the batter's eye, 40 for Judge and a 1-0 A&D lead. That was some blast. High off the batter's eye, high drive, right field. Mangum back turning. Looking. See ya, the Yankees go back-to-back. A home run for Bellinger. It's 2-0. Bombers. Speaker 2So, in case you missed it, that was Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton going yard back-to-back-to-back to start out the game against the Rays the other night, and they wound up mashing nine home runs in this game, tying a franchise record in doing so. Nice. So you've got to be doing something. You've got to think about this. I think so. Think about all the really good names that have been on the Yankees, and then you tie this record with hitting nine home runs.
Speaker 2They're kind of off and running right now man I mean dude, like you talk about a historic franchise.
Speaker 1The yankees are one of them well, they're having a historic year right now well, I mean, some of their players are some of their players, but they're saying like they're setting a lot of records here recently well.
Speaker 2I mean it's. It's kind of nice to see, because, whether you hate the Yankees or like the Yankees, whenever they're doing okay and they're doing well, it just makes for the MLB season a little more interesting, you know, because, let's face it, they're one of the most historic franchises in baseball. They are. So you kind of have to. You got to give them that. You got to give them that. You got to give them some love for that.

Speaker 2Yeah, they have a lot of rings to go with that, yeah. But speaking of success, bobby Witt Jr, yeah. Just hit his 100th home run of his very short MLB career. I mean he's 100th and you said short career, so I mean yeah, he hasn't been in the league that long, so I mean I'm pretty sure this is historic in the fact that he's done it the quickest.
Speaker 1Yeah, so I don't have that stat, but I would believe you're pretty accurate there.
Speaker 2A tip of the cap to Mr Bobby Witt. A tip of the cap. He's a good young player and he's a star for the league and I want to see him have many more years and many more home runs.

MLB Updates: Dodgers and Yankees
Speaker 2So Jung-ho Lee, he goes for this ball, kind of misjudges it a little bit, and it hits off his glove, but starts to bounce off his leg and he catches it with his knees.

Speaker 2I don't know how many people have played baseball growing up or just played baseball in general, but being hit by a pitch is super frustrating and it hurts. Like ideally, you want to get hit, maybe in the gluteus maximus, because it doesn't hurt nearly as bad as being hit in the elbow or the wrist.
Speaker 2How about? Not at all? Well, I'd like to be hit, not at all, but sometimes you just got to lean in and take the hit. Yeah, Literally. Yeah, Unfortunately, Just take it, Just let it happen. Unfortunately for Mr Victor Robles, who has been in the minors doing a little rehab assignment Because, if you remember, a while back we did at the beginning of the year he had an amazing catch diving into the fence or not fence, the netting actually in Giants in their park. Yeah Well, on his rehab assignment. Unfortunately, in this game against the Las Vegas Aviators, their pitcher decided to throw up and in on him.
Speaker 1Now, typically this wouldn't set you off. It went up and in, all right.
Speaker 2Well, he didn't get them. But here's the thing. You wouldn't think that that would necessarily set you off. But if you look back, he's been hit like five times over, like the last week. So he's about done with. He's probably short on patience. Well, you hit the nail on the head there. He was so pissed off at this pitcher that he, tom hawk, threw his bat at the pitcher.
Speaker 1I mean full-on, take this and threw his bat at him and then, if things don't any matter, the umpire and the ref had to get him off the field.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1He threw packets of sunflower seeds on the field as he was exiting, just took the whole box and it rained. Packets of sunflower seeds, hey.
Speaker 2I mean that's not as bad as he threw it straight out the dugout. I've seen some meltdowns before. I've seen a guy take second base with him when he got thrown out. Some people throw some tantrums but his is kind of warranted. But you knew this was coming, buddy, he got a suspension. His suspension is for 10 games when he gets back to the majors, so he's not going to serve it now. He gets to serve it when he gets back into the majors. Speaker 1It's going to be a little longer back to the MLB. Our careers are winding paths. Anyway. What in the world is going on in Astro World, bro? The Astros got shut out three straight times this week, and then again against the Orioles before that. Well, they won one of those games against the Orioles, but is it panic time for the Astros? What's going on in Astro World, mike?
Speaker 2Well, the Tigers like Well, let's keep it in context.
Speaker 1I mean Tigers. Almost two out of three of those were shutouts.
Speaker 2Well, let's keep it in context. They played the Tigers. They lost in the first game 10-0. The next game, they lost 1-0. The game before that with the Orioles on the 17th, they lost 12-0. That's a little more embarrassing than with the Tigers.
Speaker 2The Tigers are an incredible team and they're destined to be in the postseason and make a bit of a run. So, if anything, if you're an Astros fan, you've got to feel a little bit of I hope we don't see them in the playoffs. Astros fan, you've got to feel a little bit of I hope we don't see them in the playoffs. You've got to hope somebody knocks them out.
Speaker 1Yeah, because they're sitting at the top of their division right now.
Speaker 2Yes, yes, detroit has pretty much been on top of their division the whole year, for the most part, yeah. But since you brought it up, let's go ahead and do a little rundown of the divisions real quick, yeah let's talk about this mess.
Speaker 2So, as I said before, the Yankees have kind of been getting back off the snide because they were a little bit on a cold streak. But during that cold streak they got passed up by the Blue Jays, because the Blue Jays now lead with a 74-54 record atop of the AL East with a four-and-a-half game lead. Yeah, they got a little comfort there.
Speaker 1A little cushion.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. Well, not like the Detroit Tigers who you just mentioned.
Speaker 1They have a wide lead there.
Speaker 2They got a nine-and-a-half game cushion against that Kansas City Royals, where Detroit has a 76-53 record, and those Astros we were talking about, their scuffles, are not helping them because they only are 69-58, with a one-and-a-half game lead over the Mariners, which the Mariners made some good moves in the trade deadline and they've been panning out a little bit Mariners are hot on that ass man yeah they are, yeah, they are, yeah, they are, but over in the NL East, philly's been running it man.
Speaker 2They have a 74-53 record Leading the Mets, leading the Mets by six games.
Speaker 1Nobody relevant behind them.
Speaker 2Yeah, unfortunately my Braves are tied up in that, but neither here nor there.

Speaker 2Not very brave, sir. Moving over to the NL Central, where the best record in baseball, Milwaukee Dodgers are 79 and 47, with a seven-game lead up on the scuffling Cubs, the Cubs have been hitting some hard roads. The Brewers Brewers, yes.
Speaker 1Milwaukee Brewers, the Milwaukee Dodgers, some weird Frankenstein team Anyway yes, my bad, anyway.
Speaker 2so we do need to give them a little bit of a nod though, because they just had was it like a 14-game winning streak, and it got snapped. So I mean they've been on a pretty good run. And that's twice now they have had a double-digit amount of wins streak, so they've been hitting on all cylinders. Not doing too bad there, and the reason that this is happening is they're playing baseball like baseball used to be played, where it's all about average, that's right, get on base.
Speaker 2They're putting the ball in play. They're not striking out all the time. They're trying to put the ball in play any way, shape or form, and it's working out for them and they're stealing bases and they're getting good production out of their pitching.
Speaker 1Just play the game, bro.
Speaker 2That's what they're doing. They're playing it the right way. But, like we alluded to before, in the NL West, the Dodgers have the lead in the division again at a 72-54 record, with a two-game lead up on the San Diego Padres. So with this next series coming up with the Padres, they could build that cushion even more if they sweep them again.
Speaker 1The Dodgers. Well, that's interesting, interesting. Sorry about the silence there. Yeah, now I got another interesting topic, as we're just, you know, going through the standings there and talking about what's going on in Astroworld. You know, no Travis Scott over here, but still a train wreck anyway. So, mike, I beg to ask the question are umpires the equivalent of Unreliability, as NFL refs are? And I know this is like comparing apples to oranges here, but now they're talking about Implementing. They already do it In the minor leagues. What's the name of the technology? I think it's called ABS You're talking about doing the Robotic strike zone In the minor leagues.

Speaker 2I forget what the acronym for it, but it's ABS. Well, they've been experimenting with this in the minor leagues, where a batter has the opportunity to tap his helmet and challenge a call by an umpire. And it's going to be coming, that's going to happen. It's not going to remove the umpires entirely, but it's going to aid in both the batter and the umpire in getting the right calls. So it can be a good thing. But I know baseball purists are going to have a hard time dealing with it. But if you think about it, think about the last thing they changed.
Speaker 2That was kind of drastic the pitch clock. They did the pitch clock and everybody's like, oh, what are you doing? You know, and then they limit the amount of mound visits and stuff. So people are like, oh, what are you doing? You're destroying the game. And it's like, yeah, but the game's faster now you're destroying the game. And it's like, yeah, but the game's faster now. Yeah, the games are way more exciting because there's no more this lull where you know, the manager goes out, brings in one guy to pitch to a batter and then pulls him, brings in another pitcher to pitch to that guy, pulls him and you have like four or five commercial breaks before you get through one inning.
Speaker 2Yeah, you know it's like no, it's probably going to and from what I've seen, like I've seen this done Right. Yeah, it's not that slow of a process. You know, like the NFL, they've got to go over to the booth or get the little tablet and look and sit there and try to make a decision. Call up to the booth no, they look up at a jumbotron, they play the strike call and then you can clearly see if it's in or out and the ump either changes his call or doesn't. It's a pretty quick process and it's not unlimited. You can't do it all the time. You only get three right. I'm not sure on the number of them, I just know it's not unlimited. It's not like you can do it on every pitch.
Speaker 1I think it's up to three calls or something like that.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's kind of like in the NFL you don't get unlimited challenges.
Speaker 1Yeah, and speaking of challenges, sophie Cunningham has got a long road ahead of her. She is out for the rest of the season with that knee injury, mike? Yeah, they already had.
Speaker 2Kaitlyn Clark out, and now they've lost Sophie Cunningham as well. The Fever are kind of hitting a bad stretch for themselves. Yeah, it's really awful. But I will say this though Despite them having this little bit of a bump in the road, not having their top performers, they have moved quite well, still being sixth in the standings with a 19-16 record. That's pretty good when you're missing some of your big hitters.
Speaker 1Yeah, I know they just got Mercury. They just got Angel Reese's team. Angel Reese plays for Chicago. Yeah, anyway, I know they just got her back and they still lost, even with her on the court.
Astros Struggles and Division Standings
Speaker 2Yeah, they've been bad all year. I mean, look, they're 12th in division, that's right.
Speaker 1Chicago.
Speaker 2At an 8-26 record.
Speaker 1And I mean, if I read correctly, she dropped like 19 points. Not dropped, but she sank 19 points for the team and they still lost.
Speaker 2Yeah, they're just having a rough go. It doesn't quite have the same magic it did before and it is what it is. And she might be the one outlier on the team where she's good and the rest of the team is so bad. It's just not working. You know, I mean, the proof is in the pudding You're not winning. Like the uh minnesota links are the minnesota links at 28 and 6 are leading the wmba and looking like they're not gonna be beaten. You know, like they're they're a tough team, yeah, so we'll see. We'll see how this all shakes out with the WNBA.
Speaker 1Now you got. Well, they're kind of. They're ahead of everybody, they're six and a half games up on people. Well, I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the WNBA as a whole. Oh, okay, they're kind of coming down to the thick of their season here. Do you think the standings largely tell the tale, or do you think there's some dark horses in here? Some things are going to shift.
Speaker 2I don't know. I mean the Lynx. They seem to be firing at a different pace than the rest of the league and I feel like the standings really are showing how the league is shaping up this year. Like there's nobody that's like, oh, they just cut a bad break. You know there's nobody. That's like, ah well, if they just you know, if they had this player on the court or they had that player on the court now get. That being said, I mean, yeah, the Indiana Fever losing Kaitlin Clark for a little bit may have hurt them a little bit in the win totals, but they're still not on the same level as yeah, and I got to give it up to the Valkyries because they had a rough go in the beginning of the season.
Speaker 1They were just hanging around toward the bottom. Now they're carrying the middle of the pack. So that's interesting. And in other basketball news, John Wall is officially formally retiring from the NBA after 11 seasons played. You know he spent time with the Wizards, notably from 2010 to 2019. He made all-star team five consecutive years, from 13, 14, 17, 18, along with a seventh-place finish in MVP voting during the 16-17 season. I mean he's had quite a number of stats and accomplishments to his own name, so congratulations to him on the retirement. I know it's been easily like two years since he's seen actual NBA action.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's one of those NBA players. He came out with a flash and just kind of fizzled out. You know, like he had such a quick first step and you know the way he could, you know, with his ball handling, get around players and beat them to the dish and get that layup or get that dunk and just his step kind of, as the years went on, was not as great. He lost his step, yeah.
Speaker 1And I mean it happens especially as you age. But he already knows what he's doing. He's going to Amazon Prime's NBA now. He's going to be an analyst, so he's stepping right into that commentator, sports analyst type role.
Speaker 2And it's always nice when you have a plan when you step away, you hope that you're not stepping away into nothing, where you're just sitting at home going what now? Yeah, so I'm happy for him that he has figured out a path to what's next for him. Yeah, I agree, you know you're hearing they're having troubles. You know where, oh, they have issues with their family, or you know they're running out of money or whatever the case may be. You never want to hear that kind of stuff. You want to hear people having success.
Speaker 1Yeah, I agree with that. So, and the fact that you know, was it like a considerable percent, was like 60 percent or something like that of not just NBA players, but all sports athletes go bankrupt in the first five years after they're done playing whatever sport they're playing.
Speaker 2Well, I don't know. I mean like there has been quite a few of them. They did a whole special on it. Yeah, talking about how players, you know they went from you know being being rich you know rich and having these mansions, to being out, you know nothing yeah, I agree with that crazy.
Speaker 1But you know, uh, congratulations to him again and uh, let's see here, what do you think? The correlation man? We've had some notable, shall we say, outlaws in sports history, especially here in America. I mean, oj Simpson, ray Lewis, you know, have had some. So you're saying people have had brush-ups with the law.
Speaker 1Yeah, unfortunately, you know, call it what you want Michael Vick and Aaron Hernandez himself. Now Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the boxer, was deported as soon as he arrived in Mexico. He was arrested, I know, most notably on gun racketeering charges, but may have also been human trafficking as well.
Speaker 2Well, this happened right after he had a fight with Jake Paul. Yep, right after that loss he had that fight with Jake Paul, which, mind you, most of those aren't fights. Those are basically a glorified sparring match where there are so many rules that you can't even hit Jake Paul and he keeps fighting guys that are past their prime. Yeah, he doesn't actually fight anybody.
Speaker 3That's worth a darn like now.
Speaker 2I mean he fights people once they're past their abilities and then he puts stipulations in there like what they can and can't do. Yeah, I didn't see as much as okay. Okay when he did that one against tyson. You know how many times, if you watch the tyson fight, you'd see him do an uppercut. I did not see one good one.
Speaker 1No uppercuts in that fight he had with tyson no biting anything and no uppercuts yeah, I'm sure the bite thing was probably in the contract there.
Speaker 2But I'm telling you, if he caught one of those Tyson uppercuts rap, I don't care, tyson can be as old as hell, but that man can still throw an uppercut like nobody's business. He knocked out plenty of guys with that uppercut.
Speaker 1Yeah, so good. Good, but say, yeah, I'm starting to wonder like the correlation between, uh, especially major sports athletes, uh, that seem to make it to the big time one way or another, and their activity with organized crimes. I mean there's been numerous other ones.
Speaker 2Well, I mean it's, it's well, for, for for chavez, that is organized crime. But some of these other guys, you know, just having, you know, brush-ups with the law where you know you may have flashed a piece, or you know, if, like you, murdered somebody, like in Aaron Hernandez's case, or multiple somebodies, that's not quite organized crime, that's just being a being an idiot, you know.
Speaker 1It's just crazy to me to think about the history with some of that and, like I said, you know, oj simpson, one of the more notable, uh, one that still rings throughout history, you know, even though he wasn't necessarily an athlete when his you know shit went down, but well, former athlete, he was a former athlete but still, you know, um, so I just think that's interesting, uh, you know to to bring up something maybe we can revisit.
Speaker 2Well, the crazy part about that Chavez story was like his agent, his own agent, is like where is he, where did he go?

Speaker 2talking about Shador entertainer, you know, and it's like okay, yeah, I could see where you could make the correlation. But also, at the same time he is talking to a reporter. You know he could be also saying well, it's y'all's job to make it entertaining and it's my job to compete.
Speaker 1I think people are just really wanting to read into that. That was a really simple statement. Honestly, at first I didn't take it as a shot at Shadur, because Shadur's kind of been working his ass off too, for real.
Speaker 2Yeah, they both have had their moments. I mean, gabriel, his pick six didn't help, but for the most part he's looked pretty good running the offense and Shadur showed us what he can do and I mean we've been kind of cycling through injuries with their quarterbacks and they've already named Flacco the starter.
Speaker 2So this is all going to be based on who is going to be kind of at the back end of all this, who's going to be the backups. Kind of at the back end of all this, who's going to be the backups? We got Gabriel, we've got Shadur, we got Pickett and still floating around in there Watson. He's hurt, but we'll have to see what happens with that. So I don't know if Watson even factors into their plans now he's still getting over his Achilles shit yeah, and you gotta think Pickett too.
Speaker 2He's getting over his hamstring injury, so you're wondering how is that going to play out? I think they're going to wind up trading Pickett. I mean, they talk him up. Wind up trading Pickett. I mean they talk him up, but that's probably only to get his trade price up, and you're not going to really want to trade away either of the young guys you just drafted, and if you try to put them on the practice squad they'll get picked up before they ever make it there.

Who's having speeding issues, where he's been busted two times, you know, speeding like in excess of over 90 and 100 miles an hour, and it's not the first time. He's had like seven of them, not not like in like the last month or whatnot, but he's had quite a few of them over the years and they signed a player, low-key, undrafted college player, under the radar.

So that lets me know that maybe they don't necessarily view him as their franchise starter anymore, but they still like him enough to keep him around and try to develop him.
Speaker 2Well, his agent said that the trust between him and the organization is fractured, Like it's not good anymore, which I don't blame him for the way that it kind of comes off. But at the same time I kind of think I can point to exactly when things started to go awry the game, when he tapped his helmet and tapped himself out.

Speaker 2Where he said he was tired, he needed a break. You can't be the QB and need a break on a drive where you're about to go down and try to score when you're running downfield. He has a lot of upside. This guy in one turn can throw a deep ball right on a guy after avoiding a sack but at the same turn can sit there and miss a guy in the flat Wide and damn near throw it into another defender's hand.

So you've got a guy who has a back injury, who finally made it back to practice, but I don't care. You're going to be facing some of the best pass-rushing teams in the first few weeks and then you're going to be expecting Matthew Stafford, a guy who's known for sticking in the pocket and getting hit, to be all right with that.

But one guy I know they're not going to be going after is the Bears backup in Tyson Bajan. He just signed a two-year $10 million extension with the Bears. It's not bad. Hey, he might be the next guy that the Bears wind up trading in the offseason to some quarterback-needy team and he might turn into a little something. He's been looking pretty good in preseason, but we'll see how that pans out. I mean some other notable things that have happened recently contract and just player-wise in the NFL, jets acquire defensive tackle Harris Phillips for a late-round pick swap. Yeah, so he'll be a Jet now instead of being with the Vikings. Good rotational player there. Unfortunately for the Niners, demarcus Robinson is being suspended three games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

That's something he wasn't doing a year ago, a year ago he's going to try to run around.

I know they spent some cap money, but they got a rookie quarterback on a rookie deal For the majority of their team. They're younger, with a few veterans. They added in the offseason to shore up some of their defensive and offensive line problems. But yeah, they're a building team and they could use them. But yeah, they're a building team and they could use them. But you know, there's also teams like the chiefs who seem to always find a way to bring in some name player.

Speaker 2They got to get down to their roster and people got to make some tough decisions. Yeah, and it's going to be interesting because this also brings into the trade conversation where players they're going to be like all right, we're kind of five deep at wide out, we don't need five wide receivers, all right, trade one. Yeah, let's see what we can get for them. You start getting these teams that have been blessed by the injury bug or cursed, however you want to look at it. They start looking around going we could use him, or maybe their offensive line needs a little help, and you're seeing somebody getting cut or being pushed back to a practice squad. Yeah, we'll pick them up.
