World Cup Semifinals Breakdown

Okay. Well, we're gonna start tonight by talking about a little FIFA, but we're gonna rewind back a little bit because, you know, it's been the week. We gotta talk about some stuff that happened uh leading up to what we know happened. That being, back on July 10th, we had Spain versus Belgium. So Espanyol. I know, you know, the US losing sucked because we lost to Belgium, but you know, if we won, we were gonna go up against this Spain team, and we looked horrible against Belgium. And Belgium didn't really look that formidable against Spain. I mean, yeah, they they gave them a run. I mean, the final score being two to one, Spain won the game, and it did take them up until the the 88th minute to get the get the goal to put them ahead. That's right. But I don't know that our team would have would have fared very well against Spain.

Spain has looked pretty dominant so far in the Spain's pretty good, but I'm waiting to get a little farther down this conversation because I have some predictions.

So following that game game on the 10th, we had on the 11th, we had Norway and England. Norway. And this was a much anticipated match because people wanted to see what Norway could do against England and see if if the Norway teams just stretch of dominance or just like the great play, the run they've been on could continue. So this was all intents and purposes. This match was gonna there was a lot of favoritism towards England going into it, just because they tend to have a few more stars than the Norway team, and they've looked pretty good so far throughout the tournament. And for Norway, they just I don't know what it was.

They just they just seem to be I mean, England came away late with that that second score.

Um I mean Yeah, it to it they got that second goal in in extra time. I mean, but you're looking you're looking towards you know the the Norway team, and you're seeing that most of their stars are not in in the final minutes of that game, and it just yeah, it just it looked so bad because this team has been so much fun to watch. Their fans have been entertaining as all get out and been showing up all over America doing different things. And it just like for the run to end, it sucks. But you gotta at least be happy than the fact that they did they did give it their best shot.

I mean, they they made the uh what is it, the sweet what was that? The uh yeah, the final six. Uh eight. The final eight.

So I mean Yeah, the the final eight, because now we getting ready to talk about the final four. Um, but yeah, I mean they had a very good run, had a lot of success, had a lot of fun, uh, you know, hopefully had a good experience uh here in America, and then you know Yeah, it's never it's never fun losing, and especially in something like the World Cup that only happens every four years.

But for your team to give up, you know, give this much effort and go this far, and they're still a fairly young team, which works in their favor, you know, their your young star will be back for the next one and hopefully, you know, get a deeper run the next time. Yeah. Uh but moving over to the Argentina Argentina and Switzerland game, 3-1 victory for Argentina. It really did not look like it was a possibility that the Switzerland team had a chance. It just it was Argentina the whole way. Look, and who who's gonna count against Argentina?

Nothing against the Swiss, but Argentina has been my favorite through this whole competition. Um, and their performance stands for itself. So before I say too much, let's go on to the next.

On to the next. The next would be the game would be the game between Spain and France, which hat happened on Tuesday the 14th. And this this was a highly anticipated game because of the fact that Spain has been a powerhouse going into this tournament, and you finally had them going up again against France. And France, for all intents and purposes, this has been like the team that everybody's been kind of like favoring going into this. I mean, not to say that Spain wasn't a heavy favorite as well, but Spain they just made France look inept. They didn't even score a goal, the final score was 2-0, and Spain just seemed to just give them no opportunities. The defense was outstanding on the Spain, Spain side, because they just every time they got into the z into the zone, it's like they had an answer. They just had an answer whenever you whenever you saw them get it just a sniff at a chance, they were coming up with a defensive play to get them, you know, get the ball out of their zone. And it's just it was insane. Like it was it was complete dominance on a team that everybody thought going into this, this might be one of those firework games where you're gonna see a couple of goals back and forth and it's gonna be nail biter down to the end. Yeah, it wasn't. It really wasn't. So with that, Spain moves on into the final two teams for the for the FIFA World Cup. Given uh they were gonna wait and see who came out of the England and Argentina game. And this England and Argentina game happened Wednesday the 15th, and this game kind of I watched this game and this game kind of made me upset because of the fact that Mike's upset. Well, well, think about it. Argentina, they were the ones that won this last time the World Cup happened, right? So they were they were coming into this kind of the favorite team, and they went into this match against England, which England has been having an amazing run, beginning all kinds of contributions from people up and down their lineup, and they've looked like they've never really been been kind of uh out of it.

Like they've had a chance in every single game, and they've been the victor because of their strong play, and just people coming up in the moment.

And for whatever reason, when they went up one-nothing, they just seem to sit back, like play not to lose. And as you know, we've seen this many a time, even in the NFL. When you play not to lose, you lose. You lose.

You gotta play to win, and that means putting your foot on the pedal, you may have to take an occasional risk. And really, Mike, you hope those risks work out in your favor, otherwise you have to just, you know, so the stars might not align.

So England scored their first goal in the fifty with within the 55 minutes of of the match, and it was ther they had 35 minutes still to go, and they just didn't look like they were on the tack at all. And crazy that Argentina, like, they they're sitting there fighting the whole way down to the very end, and it's at the 85th minute, they score a goal to tie it up, and when they get into extra time, they score, they score to get pretty much the game winner. Now there was still six minutes left in this match for England to try to come up with something, but Argentina just was not giving them opportunities. They were they every time they tried to get it deep into their territory, it seemed like they were kicking it away or dribbling it over to I mean, they feel they have been feeling a very good defense. It man, both of the goals scored in this game, while Messi was not the one who scored them, he set up both goals. He set up his own players by just perfectly placed and getting these header shots for his own teammates. And it was it was a really crazy way to see this game because he he just he seemed to be just walking around and looking for the spot, like his spot. Let me find the spot where I'm going to kick this, whether it's me scoring or my teammates scoring, I'm going to find a way to be the one that helps get us that goal. Right. Yep. And it was just insane. So, with that, we're getting a Spain and Argentina final game for the for the championship.

Honestly, I given the way Spain has played defense and they've basically allowed almost no goals in this World Cup, I might have to lean on Spain.

Even though Argentina's the returning champion, I think you make a very good point about Spain's defense, one I had not considered yet. But you have the best defense going against the best offense, with the exception of this previous game. Argentina has scored three points. They've scored more points than any other team in this in this uh series. So I think Argentina is gonna repeat as winner. Well, we'll see. Which, by the way, I should have gathered some statistics on if there's ever been a repeating country on that. But we have time because we'll talk about it again next week.

MLB Draft And Legacy Names

Let's pop over into baseball. And let's start by talking about the fact that we just had the MLB draft. And I'm not gonna really go over who all was drafted, where, you know, we're not gonna dive that deep. I just thought it would be kind of interesting to you know tip the cap at a couple of uh players who have a namesake that kind of makes you hope that they do well.

Yeah, and congratulations to everybody who did get drafted, by the way. So uh we look forward to seeing you make the most of your professional career. Right.

And unlike most other sports like NBA, NFL, NHL, a lot of times these players they don't start out in the majors. Like they go down to like single A, double A, or triple A, and they have to work their way up. Sometimes these players, they're coming out of high school, like they're not even going to college, they're just going straight in playing professional ball. And given that fact, some of these players we might have seen for a little bit, but remember the names because these are the future players that we will see in the major leagues. But I wanted to go ahead and name off a couple of players that got drafted who have ties to the MLB, one of which is and I want to get his full name. Let me pull up this article right quick so I can give you the full name of this player and not is this a Brian says the name moment?

No, this one's not not I'm not gonna kick it to you, it's way too easy. It's Landon Tomei. Now, you might be saying, Well, wait a second, Tomei, it sounds a little familiar. Well, Landon Tomey was uh born part of the White Sox organization because of his father, Jim Tomei, who has launched like 500 some odd home runs in his Hall of Fame career. And so his son got drafted into the MLB. And I want to get this right. He was drafted by the White Sox. So his father played for the White Sox, now he's playing for the White Sox.

You know, one is you know realizing a moment that you have, you know, worked hard for, such as a professional wrestling debut, uh or in this case, pitching from the same mound in a pro game that your father for the same team that your father also pitched for.

Okay, whatever. I got I got lost in the sauce there. But anyway, playing on the same team and playing in the same realm as your father did. Yeah, it's a very it's I know we we there are a lot of you know generational families across sports, right? But we don't talk about it. What is it like following in those footsteps?

Well, it's like Steph Curry, his dad was Del Curry and played played in the league, was with the Hornets, or you even go Patrick Mahomes. His dad was a relief pitcher in the major leagues, he was with the Mets and a couple other organizations, so he grew up in MLB clubhouses, so he saw what it was to be a professional. But getting back to players, I want to mention, uh Andy Pettit, his son, Luke Pettit, who is not a pitcher, was drafted as well. Uh he was drafted pick number 248 in the eighth round in Sunday's draft. Uh and actually, he was selected by the Yankees. His dad played for the Yankees.

And again, kind of a similar theme. Uh his this particular player, his dad, was a pitcher, but he is not a pitcher. And that's Karsten Sabathia III, his father, CeCe Sabathia, who played for the Brewers, got his son got trapped drafted by the Brewers. So now he is a part of the Brewers organization, and he was drafted in the 20th round in the MBA uh MLB draft. So he's got a long road ahead of him if he's gonna make it up to the majors. But you know, when your dad CC Sabbathia, you're gonna get some good tips.

And I did like a part of the article when I read it, he said that uh he loved when his dad was playing for the Brewers because he was a little kid, and you know, whenever they would go to the ballpark, it was summer. So there was no school, and they'd be hanging out at the park having fun, and he would he'd never really wanted to leave. He just still wanted to be at the park and hang out. So kind of a that's cool. I like that story. So speaking of rookies and uh players getting deals is kind of the next thing we're gonna talk about. Uh, and I love doing this

Oh good lord. Anyway, so the Cardinals Weatherholt is getting a new deal. He's getting eight years, $112.5 million deal. It's a pretty good, pretty good deal. He's only a rookie, but the potential that they are seeing from the Cardinals organization, they're liking what they see. And they went ahead and said, Look, we're gonna lock you up. We're gonna lock you up. And this is you look this is something that I want parents and kids to pay attention to. Here we go. Know this. Notice how baseball players and baseball teams are willing to lock players up, give them confidence that they're the future for their team early on. They give them this is an eight-year deal. He's guaranteed he is getting a hundred and twelve million and a half dollars over the next twelve years. Now, granted, and some of them might be fully guaranteed, but the point of the matter is they're showing him, hey, you're you're hard oob, we want to keep you around. And they're doing it early. So for all these players that want or these kids that want to go off and be part of the NBA or maybe the the NFL, think about this. MLB not only has the major league level, they have the triple A, the A, and the Single A level.

Players that play in this league, one of the longest careers ever was Nolan Ryan, and he pitched in the 60s, the 70s, the 80s, and the 90s. Think about that. That's a long time, and he was a pitcher. That's right. And he pitched, he is the strikeout leader for the for the MLB all time, and he pitched that long. Point of the matter I'm trying to make to you, consider baseball because the money is better, the potential is longer, and there's more for you.

I feel like it's a little easier to make it into a paid semi pro or pro baseball team as well. Oh, you're more you're much far much less likely to make it into onto an NFL roster. Even if you are as good as you say you are.

Case in point, another player who got himself a nice little extension. Chase Burns of the Reds just got a seven-year, $105 million extension from the Reds. When they love you as a player, they're willing to give you extensions.

And moving on to the Rays, uh, they have now retired the number three out of their jerseys. They will no longer be a player to wear the number three. Now you might say, if you're not a Rays fan or don't remember the player that wore number three, uh, the player was Evan Longoria. Evan Longoria, a longtime Ray Rays player and fan favorite. Uh, they went ahead and retired his jersey. There's never going to be another player to wear it. But, funny story, when he was coming up, he didn't want the number three. He wanted the number six. Because that's the number he was wearing when he was down in the minors, and he was like, you know, I just want to keep my six. But there was a player, Tom Foley, who already had the number six and wasn't going to give it up. So they gave him the number three. And now the number three is retired. Fun fact the numbers for the positions in baseball, that used to be the number you would wear. But since players have come and gone and they've retired so many numbers, kind of had to expand a little, especially for the Yankees organization. If you're trying to wear a number below 10, sorry, they're pretty much spoken for. But moving over into some baseball action that uh kind of got glossed over. I didn't really hear anybody talk about this, and it's kind of a really cool fact. Um, uh a player for the Rockies did something that hasn't happened in nearly a hundred years in baseball. Now, when you're talking something that's taken a hundred years to happen, it's gotta be pretty special. And what that pretty special thing is, and the player that it is for, and let me get to the name Trevor McCarthy.

Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy. Trevor McDonald lead off Sunday's game. Oh, he was the start, he was the starter to lead off the game. Anyway, so the Rockies player, he has led off two separate games with in-the-park home runs. One happened in Coorsfield, the other happened at the Giants Stadium where he hit it to the triples alley, and he just kept running, and he made it all the way home. But Jake McCarthy, that's an impressive feat. And you really got to go look these in the park home runs up and check out the video of him doing these things. Like he is moving. There's a reason this guy's a leadoff hitter. But this has not been an accomplishment that has happened in over a hundred years in baseball, where the players led off a game two times in the season with in-the-park home runs to lead off a game. Damn. Pretty impressive feat, and congratulations to the game. Yes, congratulations to them. Yeah. And so with that, uh, we move over into the festivities that happened this week where we had the all-star we had the all-star game and the home run derby.

Home Run Derby Goes Netflix Only

We were already informed ahead of time, well ahead of time, that Shohei Atani was being scratched from the game due to a knee injury. So we did not get the chance to see Shohei pitch or hit or do anything within the game itself. Um, but I want to start by talking about the home run derby. Now, for some of you, you might have been you might have watched it. Some of you, probably most of you, didn't. I am in that category. I did not watch it. And the reason I did not watch it is because and I don't know why baseball didn't advertise this a little bit better, but it was not available unless you had Netflix.

Okay. Let me let me put this into context. I've been watching the Home Run Derby since I was in elementary school. Every year I watch it. This is the first year I have not watched it. All because they put on a streaming platform that I don't pay for. You know, I probably could have bootlegged watched it somewhere. I would have gone. I'm suggesting that.

Well, a little late now. But from what I from the things I've gathered and the what I've heard and some of the replays. Hunter Gatherers. It was not a great product as the way it was shown. The video angles were weird, and they had a weird combination of people being like guest hosts. They had Will Farrell in there, and Will Farrell, one of the funniest guys in tele or in movies, he really wasn't that funny because he's in an environment that doesn't lend to his kind of humor.

I think I think this goes back to uh streaming services that were exclusively streaming services. Uh do not know how to do not know how to live broadcast yet. I mean, we saw this with Prime when they got the Thursday night football deal.

They yeah, they've gotten a little better, but the that broadcast was terrible at first and uh, you know, poorly produced. Um and so I I view this a lot in that similar regard. Netflix is trying their hand now at live sports, and they're seeing similar bumps in the road.

So I'm severely disappointed in Major League Baseball because if you pay for like MLB TV, right, you're paying for that service every month to be able to watch your team or watch Major League games, and you don't even give the option for those people to watch it within that app, within that context that you're already paying for. That's first thing. Second thing is there are still many places within this country that do not have high-speed internet enough to be able to support streaming live sports. So you're literally cutting people out of the ability to even watch this.

I mean, the the only place where high-speed internet and high-speed streaming is really valuable and relevant is in your metropolitan areas, okay? Like a flower, like Mike mentioned, most of continental America barely even has internet, much less high-speed internet.

That's kind of how I feel, how I felt when you're you used to be able to just get the antenna and see it on the broadcast if you even if you didn't pay for anything else.

Like Yes, thank you. How who owns the rights? That's the problem, baby. Who's the rights? Baseball has been selling the rights to throw so many different platforms the bone to be able to show things. There are literally like, see, I have the MLB TV, so I can watch games. And I literally have games that I cannot watch because they give it to Apple TV. So unless I have Apple TV, I can't watch the game.

I mean, all scams are messed up, but it just it it's it's not fair to the fans, and it's a really messed up way to treat your longtime fans, especially given the fact that when they went through the strike in the early 90s in the steroid era, that really turned a lot of fans off of baseball and pushed them out of out of liking baseball. You shouldn't be doing things like this. You should not be doing things that basically put a bad light on your product. Now, getting back to the product at hand, the home run derby, uh the final matchup came out to be Jordan Walker and hometown hero Schwarber because this game was played in Philly. Uh obviously everybody's rooting for Schwarber, but Schwarber missed out. He didn't win, Jordan Walker won. And I like the fact that Jordan Walker won, and this is one thing that the NBA and some of the other leagues need to pay attention to. When you win the home run derby, it's worth a million dollars. Jordan Walker is a player who is not making a million dollars right now. So he just got a massive pay bump by winning the home run derby. Nice. And he even said that after he won this, he said that I hope this win inspire inspires black kids to play baseball. He said, I hope this inspires more kids of color to come play ball.

So this the way this one started out, typically when a baseball game starts out, you do a lineup card where both teams present who's on the lineup card. And they did this one in a special way. This particular one, as they introduced the players that were going to be in the starting lineup, they came out and signed with I mean, it was a Sharpie with a uh uh feather sticking out of it, kind of made it look like you know, quill and ink. Yeah. But they signed what looked to be kind of a declaration of independence kind of looking, you know, piece of paper. It was the lineup card for the game. So every player came out, announced, and signed. And as they're introducing all these players, the Phillies fans, they're being Phillies fans, they were Philadelphia, their fans. If you're not Philly or you're not, you know, on their team, they'd have nothing for you. They booed everybody that came up, except for players that were part of the Phillies or had association with the state or within the area of the state. Like they didn't, there was only two other players they didn't boo, and that's because they're from the area. That's funny. That's funny. As for the game itself, there was a scary moment in the third inning when Junior Cameronero, who's having an amazing season for the Rays, the third baseman got hit on the hand, and thankfully, it was a very scary moment. When the ball hit him, it hit him right near the nub of the bat and hit him right on the the hand and finger, and you feared, like with the sound it made, that he might have broken something. And he instantly went off the field after he stood up. So there was a bit a bit of a hold of your breath, and I know Ray's fans had to be like, no, please be okay. And he instantly went into the into the locker room to get an x-ray to find out if he's if his finger was broken. X-rays were negative on a break. I'm sure he has swelling and stuff and some some bruising and pain. Yeah. But the the best news is that negative x-rays. Yeah, I know they're glad for that much. There was also another moment in the game that was kind of cool that kind of did kind of a sandlot kind of feel where kids were kind of calling each other up or going banging on their doors and getting on their bikes and riding out, you know, to go to the park. But this all led to a moment where the kids you saw on the screen actually were at the park and then they rode their bikes out onto the field to each of the positions where the players were going to start on the field. And as they did that, they stood there with the players. Some of the players took pictures, some of the players signed autographs, Freddie Freeman was playing catch with the kid. So, like the kids got a special moment with Major League players while they were doing doing this special little viewing of kind of a sandlot moment, and then the kids got back on their bikes and rode off the field. I like that. That's cool. So it was kind of a cool moment. Some people have kind of been like, oh, it's good, it's cheesy, it's cheesy, it's it's kind of wasn't good. Of course that I say to people that say that, just enjoy life, quit being so negative.

He's been like this big time gambler, and he said that his gambling has led to about two million in bet losses. Two million that this guy has lost in bets. So they're constantly sending him like, you know, because he's a VIP, they send him like cool things, like they sent him this video from Bryce Harper saying hi to him and his son, but it wasn't until he got the video that FanDuel went ahead and put like a watermark or something on it, and it just it looks bad, but Harper's not affiliated with this. All he did was make a cameo video to say hi to this guy, and it was FanDuel that made the request and then made it seem like it's something that Bryce Harper did for him because of FanDuel. There's no association. I want people to understand. I'm not the biggest Bryce Harper fan, but he did not have anything to do with this from a gambling state. I don't would not do that.

And the Astros get a minor league minor leaguer out or minor league outfield fielder, Jaden Fielder.

The first person you pay is yourself. All right, even if it's just a little bit, you take it and put it aside. And the other thing is you should be making your money work for you, whether you invest it, put a high yield savings account, because eventually you're not gonna have the ability to make money or at least make money on the scale that you're making money now, right? This has come up to the pro-athlete level again. Eventually, this the money's gonna go away, okay? You need to be able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle while maintaining and meeting your needs as well as your family's needs, things like that. So I agree, like it's how you spend it that really matters. It's what you do with it that matters, it's not how much of it that you have coming in. Tahoe Celebrity Golf And Fan Etiquette

And uh, they actually had an event, and this was kind of cool. Amongst all of these athletes and celebrities, they do this ceremony where they introduce everybody that's going to be involved. And when it came time to introduce some of the members of the uh Olympic hockey team, the male lot hockey team. Hockey? The entire place stood up and clapped and cheered for them. They didn't do that for anybody else that they announced. So it was a pretty cool, pretty cool thing for them. And it is a pretty cool event. Like this is a this is a thing where fans they can come and they watch these people play golf, and they can, if they're lucky, maybe get an autograph, maybe get a picture, yeah, you know, and see some. I mean, they've got players from baseball, football, hockey, basketball. Like Steph Curry is like the mainstay. He's there every year for this event, and he really likes playing this event. But then you have uh like from baseball, you you have uh Gary Sheffield and John Smoltz, and and from football, you have like Jerry Rice and and other other players, uh Tony Romo, you know, just players across multiple eras, and then you have comedians and actors and actresses, they'd all that all participate, and it's all for charity. Well, had an interesting event that happened or situation that happened during this tournament. Like I said, the fans are close, so you know, fans will fan and do dumb things. You know, if somebody's willing to pay that kind of money, you know, it's like I can I can have a card, you know, like a trading card, and I can have a book that says it's worth, you know, fifty dollars, but unless somebody's willing to pay me fifty dollars, and let's say I go to sell it to the guy and he says, Yeah, I'll give you fifty dollars, but the guy behind him says, I'll give you $70. Well, it's not appraised for $70, but the value is what somebody will pay for it.

You could end up in a bidding war, but usually how these things were, especially how the future of uh sports ownership is going now, is a little more corporate, right? It's not like a single owner who was around in the 30s and started the spare change, right? Like now it's an investment group, there's a series of you know, phases they go through, and part of agreeing to the final sale number is getting the valuation back, and that's usually around I think the middle of the process, because obviously you gotta have a price before you can have an agreement. Um well, and the leagues also have to vote on it. Well, yeah, the leagues have to vote on it, but the the the vote is one of the final steps, right?

Well, even like the NBA talking about their expansion, the teams the the owners still need to vote on those teams being approved to be there.

So, Mike, before we close out the show, I beg to ask you. Uh, given all these things and these metrics, uh a team that hasn't been sold recently, what team to be sold next? Any sports franchise across any sport ever, okay? What do you think the next most valuable sports franchise uh is going to be when it hits the market, right? When it eventually becomes available for sale. What do you think, which team do you think is gonna have the highest sale price in the recent or near future?

Well, that's kind of hard to say because one, some of these teams, like it's a family affair, so it stays with the family. I mean, just look, Ursay passed away, and now his family, his daughters have taken it over. So it doesn't necessarily just because you know the owner passes away, or you know, maybe doesn't mean they're gonna be sold.

Yeah, look at the Colts and the Lions, uh, for instance, right? You know, family members took over those franchises.

Right, right. And same same thing with the Bears.

You know, uh, when the owner passed away, they just continued on. And I think the same thing's gonna happen with the Cowboys. You know, when Jerry's gone, his son's probably gonna take over, you know, and it's it's just gonna go on that way. I mean, yeah, even even even the Raiders, the Raiders are the same way. Yeah, Al Davis passed away and his son took it over. That's right. Mark Davis it doesn't necessarily mean that a team is going to sell, the value is there, yeah. And and same thing with these these major league baseball teams, these NBA franchises. Like we just had the Celtics sold, and that was kind of a shocker because they sold right after a championship. And that might be the measuring line. That might be where teams that if they're feeling like they want to get out of it, if their team wins, they'll sell it because it's never gonna be a higher value. You know, you're never gonna be at a higher point with a franchise than when they're the champion. You know? This is this is correct. It's just it's just gonna it's gonna be hard to say who will because it really comes down to because just because you own a team, like there's a lot of stuff baked into that. Yeah, you're the right function, the function of the day-to-day, the function of the stadium, the everything that operates within the stadium, all of the staffing, all of like you're you're basically running a business, and you have to oversee everything.
