Hey , this is Martin County Star's Newsmakers Podcast . I'm Mike Hennis , I'm your host and welcome Welcome to the show .

Speaker 1Today's show , let me think , oh , we've got several stories I want to talk about . Plus , there's a promotion that we're kicking off . I'm not going to give you a lot of information that's coming on this coming Friday's show , but what it is is I've got Dinner for Two , a $20 gift certificate from an area restaurant , and on Friday , in the first three minutes , I will give you the hint . All right , you then your job is to figure out where the restaurant is , to text it to me at 507-848-3261 . Text me , your guess , you know . If it's XYZ , then you text me , it's XYZ in whatever town , and it'll be in Martin County and then you text it to me . I'll put all the correct answers into the prize hat . And then the prize hat on the following Excuse me , I do fine until I start this show every day and then the prize hat . We will draw one winner out on March I'm trying to think what day it is again 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 . March 8th . So I'm going to give you a full week to figure out your answer . Okay , it won't be that difficult , it's just going to be some fun . So , anyway , that's next week or that's this Friday , okay . So be listening and you'll have a chance to win .
Speaker 1Okay , let's talk about some of our stories in the paper this past week , and my headline was believe it or not , it could be worse . And boy , that is so true . Last week it couldn't be much worse , but it could have been worse . It was cold . However , things have turned around and yesterday all the snow in my yard is gone . What about yours ? The roads are pretty clear . I got a couple of slick spots on the sidewalk on going down our our ramp in the back , but other than that , uh , it's , it's pretty nice , it's pretty clear . And then I got a story , too , about lake ice . It's not a highway , it's water . You know , I thought I'd have some fun with that , but well , I think we had three vehicles fall through this winter . Man , yeah , it's been a weird , kind of a weird thing going on this year . But so be really careful , be really careful . In this week's newspaper there is a tip on when you have to have your ice houses off the ice , and it's coming up real , real soon .
Speaker 1Ceylon City Council they discussed let me see what was it . The council approved a nuisance abatement order to clean up a property on Railroad Street that had a fire . So , wow , they also approved a request to block the street outside Lake Belt Bar and Grill for the high school reunion on June 28th . How about that ? June 28th , if you went to Ceylon High School , then you're going to be invited to a reunion . Let's see what else is going on ? Did you read ?
Speaker 1I like to read Liz's articles , her Trimont News article , her column . She actually man , she flat sheds the news and she tells you a little bit of what's going on everywhere and it's a lot of fun to read . And so , anyway , it's a good read and it's a fun read , and so give it a read . By the way , if you live in Truman or Donnell , ceylon , ormsby , who else Welcome , sherbourne , fairmont , any of these towns and you have a knack for writing a little gossip column like Liz writes , you know what's going on in your community . Get a hold of me , get a hold of me . Get a hold of me . I would love , love to have you . That's what we want . We want local stories . That's things that people locally are interested in . I mean , we're all interested in the national news and that's great . But what about just locally ? You know this is stuff you can't get on Facebook . You're not going to get anywhere else . You're not going to get anywhere else . You're going to get it right here .
Speaker 1On the Martin County Star , page four always has Aunt Ivy and Aunt Ivy this week was kind of fun . It says Dear Aunt Ivy , I can't take it one more day . I've had enough and I'm leaving . I might return in June , but for now I've reached my limit . I suppose I should explain . She said this is not about my husband . He's great and my job is fulfilling .
Speaker 1It's the cold Minus 10 , minus 12 . Nope , I can't take it . I'm thinking about someplace warm , any suggestions ? And Ivy , only she can . She wrote dear freezing . Well , this too shall pass , but I get it .
Speaker 1So I have done a little research for you . Warmer than here . I put it to my Google search . Let's see , here's a place at least 50 degrees warmer than here , with highs in the mid 30s . Not too bad , a beautiful city , very nice people , great restaurants , and you won't believe it , but it's Anchorage , alaska . That's right . Last week Anchorage , alaska , was 50 degrees warmer than here , sheemany , anyway . She said hey , think about warm shows , summertime TV movies like Miami Vice or Grease or Sandlot . That's a good movie , isn't it ? I've always loved that movie . I've watched it two or three times and it's just fun . Make a big bowl of popcorn , maybe two , and sit down and watch it . Also , maybe go to a tanning booth if you need some sun . Hold on , spring is coming . I oops promise . Have I lied to you before . Well , anyway , side to Aunt Ivy I don't know if she has or not , I'm not sure we have a nice .
Speaker 1Page 11 was a nice story by Chuck Rudolph . Chuck wrote this in and , oh man , I am so sorry , I am dry air , I think you know . Anyway , he originally wrote this back 30 years ago and it's called Tom's Story . It's a really good story . I'm not going to read it to you , but if you get a chance to grab your paper and if you haven't read page 11 on the church page , tom's Story do so . I think you'll find it inspiring and also it's a fun read . So give that a shot .
Speaker 1Obituaries those are never fun to read , but we had a couple this past week . Darren Brockman passed away and Darren was only 56 , and so our condolences go out to his family , his wife Wendy and the rest of the family . We are so sorry . I didn't know Darren . I'm kind of fairly new in the area so I don't know a lot of the people , but I am always sad to read , especially someone 56 , way young . And then , of course , david Christopher Malin . He was a Fairmont native and he served . He was killed while in action with the Border Protection . He was only 44 years old and he passed away this past week .
Speaker 1And again , oh and then , really a heart-wrenching story , a tribute to Bev . Anthony Darwin wrote it to his wife and it's a beautiful story . It's a beautiful picture of them sitting on a bench overlooking the lake , and it was a good story , and I'm so thankful that Darwin wrote it and sent it to us and asked us to put it in . We were happy to do it and , you know , it was one of those things that you're always sad to hear . I didn't know Bev personally , but just looking at her photo I was like wow , she looked like a nice lady , she looked like a really nice lady , and I'd seen her around , but , like I said , I didn't really know her . Anyway , though , you know , here's one Sherbourne Lions annual pancake feed will be Sunday this Sunday coming up from 9 to 1230 at the Martin County West High School , and proceeds go to the holiday festival . Also , by the way , you can donate your old eyeglasses and hearing aids that day , and I have a couple of eyeglasses . I'm going to bring up and donate those while I'm in line , so you know . And April 14th , red Cross Blood Drive will be in Sherbourne at the Regional Worship Center , and that will be Monday , april 14th , from 1 to 6 pm . 1 to 6 pm .
Speaker 1Also on page 6 this week , captain America . Sean wrote us a review of Captain America . He's not a big fan and I talked to him about it and he goes . No , he goes , it just lacked . So , anyway , but it was also the number one movie in America . So what does Sean know , right ? And then the Red Rock Center for the Arts . They are hosting .
Speaker 1When is this ? Did it already happen ? I mean , I'm trying to find the date here February 20th , oh , it did . Sorry , it was in last week's paper . Plenty of time , but the Luverne and Lucy musical comedy , that already took place . So , anyway , anyways , anyways .
Speaker 1And then , of course , sports on the back page , and there's always a great read there , and you know so , okay ? So here's a synopsis of what's going on Now . The contest that's coming up this coming Friday , all right . So be aware of that and be ready . Be ready , put on your thinking caps . It shouldn't take a lot of thinking , but you know , I'm not that deep , but I'll come up with a clue and your job is to decipher the clue and send us a text telling us where the restaurant is , and then your name goes into the prize hat and we'll see who wins there , and that will be in the first three minutes of the show . So you know , we're going to get right to it . That way you have a chance to read and look at it .
Speaker 1Also , some things coming up . We're going to talk to Candy next week . I'm going to have her in . We need to talk about some different things going on in sales , some promotions coming up , some papers to look for . Also , the summer events paper . Believe it or not , I know it's not even spring yet , but summer events is coming out very , very shortly and she's already busy , busy , busy with it .
