In the 1800s, in rural Ontario, one woman became known for what she could see.

Elizabeth “Mother” Barnes—often called the Witch of Plum Hollow—was said to read tea leaves, predict futures, and help locate missing people in her community. Some believed she was gifted. Others weren’t so sure.

Rumoured to be the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, her reputation spread quietly through Leeds County, built on word of mouth, strange accuracy, and stories that lingered long after the moment had passed.

In this episode of Down the Crooked Path, we explore the life and legend of Mother Barnes—where folklore, belief, and the unknown blur together.
