Bobby G's Big Stone: Gunner Woodson
Gunter Woodson is a brain cancer survivor, musician, and entrepreneur whose life journey has been marked by resilience and creativity. Born in Houston, Texas, Woodson relocated to Austin to pursue his education at the University of Texas at Austin. After a decade of embracing an adventurous lifestyle filled with rock climbing, mountain biking, and surfing, he returned to UT to earn his MBA.
Just before getting married, Woodson faced a life-altering challenge when he was diagnosed with an Anaplastic Astrocytoma brain tumor. He underwent two surgeries followed by two years of intensive radiation and chemotherapy treatments. This harrowing experience proved to be a pivotal moment in Woodson's life, shifting his focus towards the more creative aspects of living. While Woodson acknowledges the profound impact this experience had on his life's trajectory, he expresses a sense of regret that it took such a traumatic event to unlock his creative potential and reshape his priorities. He often reflects on how something so devastating ultimately led him to become the person he is today.
Musical CareerDuring his recovery, Woodson channeled his creative energy into music. He founded an Americana band called Long Woodson, which released two albums - one a story album (Girl Upstairs) and the other a concept piece (Robyville). Building on this success, he later formed a rock 'n' roll band named The Big Gun Show, whose latest record was pressed on vinyl. Woodson's musical roots trace back to his upbringing around a jukebox filled with outlaw country tunes. This influence, combined with over a decade of monthly residencies at The Little Longhorn Saloon, led to the creation of a unique concept called "Honky Rock". These record features honky-tonk on one side (Side H) and rock 'n' roll on the other (Side R).
Community InvolvementRecently, Woodson has expanded his involvement in the music community by joining the Advisory Board for the Sims Foundation. This role allows him to contribute his experiences and insights to support others in the music industry.
Gunter Woodson's journey from cancer survivor to successful musician and community leader is a testament to his resilience and creative spirit. His story continues to inspire others as he combines his passion for music with his commitment to giving back to the community.
