Understanding Tolerance in Addiction
Jul 15, 2026
Increasing tolerance refers to the phenomenon where an individual requires a larger dose of a substance to achieve the same effects previously produced by a smaller amount. This physiological adaptation does not inherently indicate addiction or dependence, as tolerance can also develop with the appropriate therapeutic use of medications. Understanding this concept is crucial in discussions about substance use and recovery, as it helps differentiate between normal physiological responses and problematic patterns of use.
