SPEAKER_00So welcome back, Funella. Thanks, Ash. And what we are going to discuss now is about having a growth mindset. When challenges and tough time comes, what attitude do we have is really important. And what I have learned that having a growth mindset is so much of a game changer when challenges come and so important for resilience.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And we can think about the different reactions that are possible when faced with a challenge. And what we want to unpack is what is this growth mindset? How can we do something that feels positive in response? Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like if you see the if you see kinds of people you meet on a day-to-day basis, or for example, at your workplace, there will be some people who are very cynical, pessimistic, angry, frustrations. And they have got all the right, they have got the reasons. Yeah. Bad things are happening. Things are happening all around the world which can make you feel like that.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00We know that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But are you able to make that choice and do you have that mindset that even the most challenging situations, you are able to turn them into opportunities for your own growth. And it does require a kind of mindset.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And let's face it, we have to acknowledge the bad things that are happening. We have to understand what they are and what the demands are. But then it's about finding the action. What can we do? What shifts can there be in ourselves? How can we help shifts to happen around us through our social communication, through our networks, and through our own actions? How can we be there in that moment in a more positive way? Or in a way that's going to bring about better outcomes or the best outcomes. Yeah, absolutely. So we can get mired in the difficulty, or we can choose to do something else. And that's what we're going to unpack here.
SPEAKER_00Well, bad is a label we are giving to a to an event.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So if we detach ourselves away from the label and see what was the event.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what exactly is that?
SPEAKER_00Kind of dissect that event and take a neutral view to it from a mindset that okay, I'm not going to judge what has happened. This is an event. And how do I convert? How do I so I told you about the the it's all about transforming.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Trance and form. Trance is change. The way you are able to change with your mindset is that you change your perception of the event. Yeah. So rather than calling an event or a person as good or bad or evil or ugly, you see what exactly happened.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What was the event? What's going on?
SPEAKER_01We perform an analysis.
SPEAKER_00We perform an analysis.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But that can only come with our own mindsets.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes what happens is that there are people and there are situations that trigger something in us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_00And it is more about us than it is about the other people or the event.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And that's where we deploy our emotional intelligence. What's going on here? What is the reaction to what's happened and what is something else? And how can I support myself in that? And I think maybe it would be good to look at the visual here. Yeah, the visual is a very special thing about the book.
SPEAKER_00The visual here, Fonella, is as you can see that in the center there is a person who is having a kind of a with a visual representation that there is a there are flowers and there are bees and there is a full ecosystem growing out of their heads. Whereas on the other extremes, there are two people who are feeling kind of bitter, feeling angry, and they are not, they are having more polarized view of the things. And that's fine too. But the the the key here is that if you have a fixed mindset and challenges happen, they can put you into a serious stress response. Yeah. Yeah. And a chronic stress response. Absolutely.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Which will ultimate ultimately affect your health. Whereas if you have an attitude, okay, whatever is going to come in my come in my way, I will perceive it on my way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And able to transform it to see how I can learn and grow from it. And it is something like surfing. I'm I I but I I do not do any surfing, but I've I've got a friend who is a very avid surfer. Yeah. And he talks about, you know, understanding these waves and then riding these waves. Yeah. Riding these waves.
SPEAKER_01So there's all that power that's there. And rather than being overwhelmed by it, you're gonna roll along with it. You're gonna let it lift you up, in fact.
SPEAKER_00And he says many times I get thrown off.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Many times, like literally, you never know, but you try your best, you try to find the wave, and then you ride the wave. But the joy it brings is just the way he was describing was phenomenal. Yeah. Similarly, when the challenges come, we see how we are going to ride this situation. Yeah. And that situation is with your mindset. Because we create the perceptions in our own head, the way we think, and how we can shift those perceptions. Now, here if you are in a particular situation, the person themselves might not be able to see that situation. Yes.
SPEAKER_01It's in the framing, isn't it? You might need somebody else.
SPEAKER_00You might need somebody else external, like a coach or a mentor. And to help you unpack. To unpack and unrevel, okay, you are seeing this situation, you're perceiving this situation in this particular way. Yeah. Is there any other way you can perceive this situation?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Because we can polarize situations. When we're under stress, we can look at things as if it's a binary, it's good, it's bad. Yes. And that probably isn't going to help us. And then our subconscious can kick in and we start to do all kinds of things that that could, you know, potentially come out in analysis. We start to project things into what's going on. So then this event, which we could look as as neutral, starts to seem all bad and starts to contain lots of the bad things that have happened to us in life. And then we can't be objective. We can't just look at it for what it is. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I'll add one more layer to that that you come back to the limbic system, you come back to the lower centers of the brain, and you feel chronically stressed. Uh-huh. And when you are there, you are not able to think rationally.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So having a support system, having a coach to develop that growth mindset is important.
SPEAKER_01To help you unpack, to help you look at what's happening. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you and me touched about uh post-traumatic growth. Yeah. When there are situations where there are a high level of challenges, people who have that mindset that, you know, whatever is coming my way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00It is coming to serve me. Yeah. And there are people who think in a different way. They say, okay, whatever is uh whatever is happening, there is a higher force behind that. Yeah. They also seem to take everything in their ride.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because they have shifted their perception. So rather than taking anything personally, they are believing that there is a higher order which is or a greater meaning. Or a greater meaning they put to this particular situation. And that shifts everything.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. And there's something about being able to be there. If you can work on yourself and work with someone else, building that resilience so that when those situations occur, when something hits you, you've got those things that you can go and do. You mentioned about the limbic system. So then we're completely back to our self-awareness, self-reflection, self-care. So we're thinking, what could we do? Could I take five minutes to go and journal? Could I sit down and listen to some music for five minutes? Because in that way I'm going to be activating the right side of my brain. I'm going to have that communication going on that's going to bypass all of that panic, all of those feelings. I'm just going to start to unwind a bit and be able to connect to something else. So whatever it is that you're able to use, you can take some time, you can factor that in. But that's just a little strategy. It's something you can do for five minutes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. To root yourself, root yourself back. Yeah. Very true. Yeah. And now think about if you are surrounded by somebody who has got truly a growth mindset as compared to somebody who's got a fixed mindset.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What is the difference you would feel in between these two different interactions? Like for example, in the book, what kind of people you would like to be with who have a positive attitude, who have a mindset of taking converting all challenges into uh opportunities for growth for themselves, for others. Yeah. Or you would rather be with somebody who is always just looking at the negative side of things, blaming others, shaming others. It creates an environment of much more positivity.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, the opposite is we can feel very disempowered. What what's my agency? If I don't feel I can have any agency, if I can't do anything, I'm going to feel powerless. And that's when you know depression starts to evolve within us. We start to have that sense that we we just can't do anything. We're just frozen. And I think if you're in an environment where there's a lot of negativity, that's going to affect you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So in this particular chapter, uh Funilla, I go into the specifics of how to how to shift that mindset to a growth mindset. Yeah. And uh we will take our readers into that. But thank you for sharing such remarkable insights into this. And we will go to the next section now and talk about how we create an adaptive response in difficult situations. So thank you for joining me. Thanks, Sash. And I will look forward to seeing you in the next chapter. Amazing. Thank you.
