Choose Peace: Why I Avoid the News Cycle
Peace seems increasingly elusive in our hyper-connected world. With notifications, breaking news, and social media bombarding us every minute, how can anyone maintain mental calm? That question—"How do you keep peace of mind when you seem so unaffected by everything happening?"—inspired this deeply personal exploration of my approach to finding tranquility amid chaos.
The secret isn't complicated, but it requires intentional choice. I've discovered that constantly watching news programs—which primarily highlight tragedies, conflicts, and disasters—creates a mindset of anxiety and helplessness. By stepping away from what I call "propaganda" and consciously choosing uplifting content instead, I've cultivated an inner sanctuary that remains undisturbed by external turbulence. From starting each day with prayer to selecting classic black and white films over breaking news, these small decisions compound into profound peace.
This isn't about burying your head in the sand. It's about recognizing that being "informed" 24/7 rarely improves your life and often diminishes your capacity for joy. I share my practical approach to staying aware without becoming consumed, including how I curate my online experience, when I do check news, and alternatives like music and creative expression that nourish rather than deplete my spirit. If you're tired of feeling anxious and overwhelmed by world events, this episode offers a permission slip to protect your peace and practical guidance on how to do it. Hey there, I'm Regina Swern. Welcome back to another episode of Regina Swern Audio Series Presents. This morning I want to speak about peace of mind. You know what? Lately, I've been constantly asked the question how do you keep a peace of mind? With all of the things that's going on in the world right now, starting with the politics and all the things that's happening, people are seriously asking me how do you keep a peace of mind? You seem so unaffected. That's what everybody's saying to me, believe it or not. They're saying that to me. You're not affected. It doesn't affect you. Why don't I go ahead and give you a place that you can contact me? Contact me at swornregina at gmailcom. And thank you so much to those who support this podcast monthly and for those who listen and share this podcast.
Speaker 1:Now, should we get back to that topic of peace of mind? I think so. You know, people ask me everywhere I go, they're like you just always seem like there's nothing going on, like you're just in a world to yourself or a world by yourself. And I've said it many times I feel like sometimes I'm in a world by myself because since my sister passed away, you know, everything is on me pretty much. So, yeah, sometimes I do feel like I glued in front of the television watching CNN, fox, msnbc and all of these other stations. I don't sit there glued in front of the television watching no news, guys. I concentrate on things. That's of peace. The news is always. I've always looked at the news as propaganda, always looked at the news as don't check out just your local news. Everything in there. Somebody got shot, somebody died, somebody had an accident, somebody did. It seems like they live on telling you the bad stuff. So, baby, I stopped watching the news a very long time ago. The only time I catch the news is if something gripped my spirit, like the recent fire in Long Island with that great, wonderful man, christopher Arsenault. That story caught my attention. I don't generally look at news, but that particular story caught my attention because that tragedy troubled my spirit. It troubled it so much that I could see arson. You know, troubled my spirit. I'm just thinking about it right now. It's troubling.
Speaker 1:I tell you guys about the vision. I don't want to talk about it, guys. I can't talk about it. But my piece is Every single morning I'll get up and I'll say a word of prayer.
Speaker 1:I have to, I have to, I have to pray over my day, you know, because I can't make it. If I don't, I can't. I stay away from the television. If I'm going to look at TV listen to me, good, I'm going to probably watch the weather to see do I need a jacket or do I need something if it's going to be cold, hot, rainy, whatever I do watch the weather. But if I'm going to look at television, that television is going to be set to some black and white movie that I love, because I love those old black and white movies, or something that's peaceful, of a peaceful time, or something like that.
Speaker 1:I am not going to focus on the bad stuff propaganda. I stay away from that stuff. Propaganda I stay away from. Even when I get online. If I go to YouTube, I look at things that's going to be peaceful to my spirit. I do not get on there looking at all this stuff, because why not look at the news and look at it all that? Then you're going to get on TikTok and look at those people and they're talking about who got laid off, laughing at the MAGA people or you know, looking at what the president is doing, looking at what Congress is doing, china. I'm not going to waste my time looking at all this stuff. If that's what you want to do, that's what you prefer to do, then you are you.
Speaker 1:I am me, and in order for me to be, as in my last podcast, better than yesterday, being the best version of me, I can't be the best version of me by watching news all day, sitting there glued in front of the television. Some people, they want to know well, what happened in the news today and they sit there and they watch that stuff and then they wonder why they are so miserable. I don't sit there watching that stuff all day. I don't even watch it at all. If I'm online and I so happen to pass a video where a bunch of people are yapping and talking about this and that I pass right by it, I put it in my do not recommend that channel because I don't want to see that stuff. Instead, I'll listen to some beautiful music and kind of get myself in a really somber mood, very relaxing mood, or I'll look at some videos that's very fun to look at, some very fun music, peaceful stuff, but I stay away from all that drama stuff. I stay away from all these housewife stuff. I stay away from that too, while these people be on there fighting and all that stuff. I don't look at any of that stuff.
Speaker 1:So you want to wonder why I got peace? There you go. So you want to wonder why I got peace? There you go. I stay away from all the negative. In order for me to stay positive, in order for me to keep peace of mind, I have to stay away from all of that. Otherwise I'd be just like you guys miserable, walking around, wanting to discuss that stuff all day long, walking around angry, mad at the world, walking around just no peace. I'm not going to let that happen to me. I'm sorry, but I'm not sorry. I will not let that happen. I love my peace. I love it.
Speaker 1:I'm not saying that things are not going on in the world right now. I'm not saying that people are not losing their jobs. I'm not saying that everything is happening with the tariffs and different things. I'm just saying that I choose not to watch it. I choose my peace. I choose to be peaceful. This is me. It has nothing to do with anybody else. It's about how I want to wake up in the morning and go to bed at night. I want to wake up peaceful and I wake up peaceful. I want to go to bed peaceful and I go to bed peaceful Because I don't entertain all the negativity and sometimes propaganda in news can be negative.
Speaker 1:So the next time you get ready to watch your six o'clock news, I'm going to say think about flipping the channel on something else, because that stuff is. I'm not saying it's not true and that you don't need to know what's going on. You do. There are times you need to know what's going on, but some people sit there glued in front of their televisions. They're glued in front of it and they like to discuss these things and that's why they are. Those are some of the most miserable people because they sit there glued in front of the television. Yeah, every now and then check the TV out out, check the news out to see what's going on. But don't sit there and just your eyes are glued. Every waking moment is about what's going on in the news or you can see it online on youtube, on tiktok all over TikTok. You got this stuff all over TikTok about what's going on in the news. It's everywhere. And again, I'm not making light of what people are going through. I'm definitely not doing that, but what I'm saying.
Speaker 1:People want to know about my peace. How do I stay peaceful? Well, guys, I'm telling you how I keep peace in my heart and my soul. I do it by staying away from all the news Local news too, yeah. So that's how I keep my peace and that's how I stay peaceful. Sometimes I pick up my guitar and just play a strong, a few chords of music, but anything that'll make me peaceful, anything but sitting there glued in front of the television watching the news. I love my peace way too much. I'm Regina Swern. Thank you so much for listening. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You can contact me at swornregina at gmailcom. Take care of yourself and remember, being glued in front of the television, in front of the news, is going to only make you miserable. So get away from it and keep a little peace in your heart, thank you.
