Regina Swarn Audio Series Presents

Beyond Tragedy: Finding Humanity in Disaster

Regina Swarn Season 7 Episode 49

Fan Mail

When tragedy strikes, our response reveals our humanity. In this heartfelt bonus episode, I take a moment away from my regular programming to address something deeply troubling – the way some people have responded to the devastating floods in Texas.

With family and friends in the affected regions, I've been closely following the disaster's impact. What I've witnessed on social media has left me disturbed and disappointed. Between those turning others' suffering into comedy and individuals attempting to frame this natural disaster through a racial lens, I felt compelled to speak out against such heartless behavior. Houses floating away aren't fodder for jokes – they represent families who have lost everything.

"Your day is coming," I caution those who mock from behind their keyboards. The safety and security we take for granted can vanish in an instant. Natural disasters don't discriminate based on race, status, or circumstance. The floods in Texas, like all tragedies, should unite us in compassion rather than divide us with cruelty or political posturing. I extend my heartfelt prayers to everyone affected by these floods and other recent disasters, including tornadoes that have devastated communities across the country.

While I'll continue bringing you interviews like my recent conversation with Jerri Clay Hays from Rescue Cats Incorporated, I believe we must sometimes pause to acknowledge the suffering around us and encourage a more compassionate response. Have you witnessed similar insensitivity online? How do you think we should respond to those affected by natural disasters? Share your thoughts and remember – the way we treat others during their darkest moments defines who we truly are.

Speaker 1:

Hey there, good morning. I'm Regina Swarn. Welcome back to a bonus episode of Regina Swarn Audio Series Presents. I recently uploaded the part 2 of my on-location interview with Jerry Clay Hayes from Rescue Cats Incorporated, located in Fayetteville, georgia. It's up right now. Go out and listen to it. If you didn't hear part one, go listen to part one first and then listen to part two. We are going to be doing more. I have a lot of wonderful, wonderful guests that I'm going to interview on location and some over the phone, of course, because I can't go to all of these different places, but I can talk to them on the phone and interview them, and I always say live, because it's always a live event.

Speaker 1:

What I want to speak about in this bonus. I want to say thank you all so much for supporting my podcast, for listening, for sharing. I just want to thank you. I appreciate you so much for all that you do. I want to speak briefly because I haven't talked about this, but I want to talk about the flood that's going on. That's happened in Texas. I do have family there in Texas and lots of friends that live there in Texas. I want to speak on the flood, though for a moment.

Speaker 1:

I've been seeing stuff on social media. I don't like reading things or looking at things, but sometimes when I see floods and things like that and hurricanes or tornadoes, it catches my attention. So I was looking at some of the videos and different reels that people have posted about their families and loved ones and friends and you can't help but read down in the comments. I wish people, a lot of people, are so insensitive. Many, many people are very helpful and grateful and trying to do all that they can to help people in situations like this with the floods, but sometimes people see people, houses floating down the water and they make fun and just try to be funny. But there's nothing at all funny about that. You know, you may not live in an area that is hit by a hurricane or a flood. I mean, there are storms of all kinds, tornadoes, twisters all kinds. Anything can happen Car accidents.

Speaker 1:

Stop making fun of other people and this is not a time Someone brought it to my attention of some woman or some women making this into a racial thing as well. This is no time to do that. This is not about race. This is no time to do that. This is not about race.

Speaker 1:

People lost their lives and it just makes me literally want to throw up some of the things that I see. Don't want to see it, but when people bring things to my attention, of course I'm going to check it out Things that I hear. And when I heard the lady, the woman, going on and on ranting about race, making this thing out of a race thing, I just literally want to throw up and I think it's really ridiculous. This is a tragedy. My prayers goes out to the people there in Texas, as it did in the people in Carolina and wherever my prayers goes out, and I just don't think this is a time to make things out of a race, about race and about trying to be funny and making little posts. And people lost their chickens and their turkeys and you know saying go put gravy on it, it's time to eat the turkey, and you know, just making fun.

Speaker 1:

I can't stand when people do that. When people make fun of other people, you rest assured, your day is coming. Your day is coming. It may not be that in that way, it could be any other way, but when you make fun of other people, be aware of making fun of somebody else. Be careful when you make fun of somebody else, because the same thing can happen to you and it can be 10 times worse, 100 times worse.

Speaker 1:

I cannot stand to see this. I cannot stand to see people making things out of a race, making it about race. I cannot. I don't like that. I don't like seeing that God has no respect for persons. So why are you sitting here? Just making this out of a race this happened to them because of da-da-da or making things out of being funny about people losing their possessions and people's houses, floating down the river and stuff. That stuff is not funny.

Speaker 1:

People need to get a life. Some people sit behind these computers. That's all they know how to do. Sit back in the dark, get a life. Some people sit behind these computers that's all they know how to do. Sit back in the dark on a computer and make fun of other people. But your day is coming. Trust and believe. Do not ever think that you are so safe that this cannot happen to you.

Speaker 1:

My prayers goes out to the families. I'll be doing what I can, but my prayers definitely goes out to the families and those who lost their lives in those horrible, horrible floods. My prayers goes out, and there's been some tornadoes and other different things that's taken place Also over the last few months. My heart goes out to them and my prayers goes out to them also. I just want to come on the podcast and speak about that today. Thank you so much for listening. Just passionate about this kind of stuff and I can't stand to see it when people make things about race or try to be funny. I don't like that. I'm Regina Swern. Thank you so much for listening.
