When Motivation Doesn’t Show Up
Jama PantelEveryone loves to talk about motivation, but what about the days when it's just not there? Let's be honest, y'all. Motivation is great until it's not and it doesn't show up. Hey y'all, it's your podcast bestie Jama again, and today we're getting real about motivation, or more accurately, the lack thereof. We've all had those mornings where we stare at our to-do list, our business we've got to get this done, or our running shoes, or that creative project we swore we'd finish, and think, nope, not today. And yet somehow we expect ourselves to stay motivated all the time, like it's a personality trait instead of what it actually is, an emotion. Motivation isn't what keeps you going, and in fact, it might be what is actually holding you back. So I think at some point we all thought that motivation was this magic ingredient that we just needed to find. So when I was training for marathons or working hard towards my big business goals, I believed that if I could just stay motivated, I'd be unstoppable and I'd be able to conquer everything. But the truth of the matter is, motivation comes and goes. It's just a guest in our lives. It does not take up permanent residence. What's actually kept me moving in my business, in running in fitness, and in life in general is showing up without waiting to feel ready. I still have days where sometimes I just don't feel like editing clients' pictures or blogging about a session or photography. There are days where I didn't want to lace up my run shoes, and plenty of days where I didn't want to record this podcast. It is Monday evening and I'm just now recording for this Tuesday drop. So I'm telling you, this motivation stuff is real. Days I didn't want to post anything on social media or times I didn't want to show up, but I did it anyways, whether I was ready for it or not. And guess what? It built something deeper than motivation ever could. It built trust, trust in me turning myself into something that I could do even when I didn't feel like doing it. And that trust turned then into momentum. Motivation might get you started, but it won't keep you going. Discipline sounds great and all, but it's really just self-respect and action. When you commit to small, consistent actions and habits, even when you don't feel like it, you create proof that you can rely on yourself, and that proof becomes confidence. The reason most people quit isn't because they fail. It's because they keep waiting to feel like doing the thing instead of learning how to move on without that feeling. So the next time you think, I just need to get motivated again, ask yourself, or maybe even say it out loud, do I just need to start instead? Here's something I've learned from years of being in business and having a brand and from running and lifting in life in general. Momentum doesn't come from motivation. It comes from movement, from those actions, those steps forward. Even if you just take one small step, or short walk or a few deep breaths, writing that first sentence, starting that blog post, even if you're not ready to publish it, it shifts something inside of you. Because when you show up for yourself on the hard days, the easy ones start to multiply. Stop trying to chase motivation and build momentum instead, even when it feels hard. You don't need to wait until you feel ready. You need to start before you're ready and trust that the feeling will catch up later, because I promise it does. Motivation is the spark, but momentum is the fire that keeps you going. And once you learn how to keep that flame going, you'll realize you don't have to rely on inspiration anymore. You've built resilience. So if you've been waiting to feel motivated again, consider this your little nudge or maybe your loud push. You don't need more motivation. You just need a moment of movement because once you start, you'll remember who you are, and that's what keeps you going and keeps you living the whole picture. And that's all I got today.
